Despite a myriad of changes within thebuilding proper, many original features wereretained, such as the hand-cut granite lintelsin the hallways.

At least 24 inches wide with keystones atthe top, these architectural elements run thelength of the building and are mesmerizing.

A primary feature of this 1,658-square-foot penthouse is its space from top to bot-tom. Ceilings soar to almost 11 feet on thefirst level with 10-foot ceilings on the floorabove.

Abundant storage is the norm, too. Over-sized and deep double closets are every-where. The renovation even added enclosedstorage under the stairwell to the secondfloor.

Gleaming hardwood floors, multi-paneledinterior doors, along with detailed millworkthroughout the unit blend seamlessly withthe timelessness of this home.

In the custom-designed U-shaped kitchenwith stainless steel Maytag appliances(stove, refrigerator, dishwasher), everysquare inch of space is usable. For example, pullout corner shelves in numerous upperand lower cabinets ensure that dead spacedoesn’t exist.

With recessed ceiling lights and under-

cabinet lighting, dark corners are non-exis-tent. Efficient appliance layout has producedthe maximum amount of granite counterspace possible. This room has a beautiful tilefloor.

Two double closets anchor one end of theentertainment size open flow dining/livingarea. At the other end a private balcony withharbor views is an ideal spot for morningcoffee or late night aperitifs.

The current dining area seats six easily. Abar with two wine coolers-refrigeratorstucked under the stairwell also works as aserver during dinner. Recessed lighting high-lights the original back splash: an exposedbrick wall.

The living room encompasses the rest ofthe space. A working fireplace is concealedbehind a panel, but this feature can reappearwith minimal effort.

Attractive custom light fixtures in the din-ing and living room areas are practical andadd visual interest. They convey with thesale.

An exposed brick wall and large refinishedexposed beams in the spacious first-floormaster bedroom reflect the origins of thebuilding, and a double closet that has abumpout for additional space representstoday’s demands for storage, storage and

more storage. A decorative niche under aneave, one of several throughout the home, isa whimsical touch.

An ever-changing, ever-fascinating harborview is always available via attention-gettingfloor-to-ceiling windows in this room. Ofcourse, at this penthouse level every view iswonderful.

The well-sized full bath on this floor witha tub/shower combination also has a largelinen closet. A Carrara marble countertopand tile floor are good-looking accents.

This level currently has discrete rooms, but the absence of load-bearing walls onthis floor means that the spaces can bereconfigured.

Make the bedroom smaller or change itsentrance with space-saving pocket doors.Create a library/den as another option, oreliminate the room entirely to create a loft-like ambiance. The ceilings are highenough.

Going up or down the stairs is almost ajourney into the past. The exposed brickwall on one side of the stairwell that con-tinues to the second floor has original nich-es and stepped designs from its days as ahardworking warehouse.

Another entrance from the building’scommon area is on the second floor. Thisconvenient egress gives this home theadvantages of single-floor living, especial-

ly since the landing is room size. In fact, this area is large enough to work well as afamily/sitting/TV room, and 10-foot ceil-ings give this completely interior space anunexpected airiness.

Two extra-deep storage closets are onone wall.

The three remaining bedrooms that rankas “big, bigger, and biggest” have characterto spare. For example, all have exposedbrick walls, and two have floor-to-ceilingwindows that provide grand harbor views.

One bedroom, which has a set of glasssliders, also has a wall of closets. Anotherhas a standard double closet and a decora-tive niche carved under an eave.

The smallest bedroom also could beguest space, a sweet nursery, a getawaystudy or a generously sized home office. The shared bathroom has a tub/showercombination, a Carrara marble vanity topand marble-tiled floor.

Beauty aside, this urban residence comeswith a fair number of amenities, includinga beautifully landscaped garden just stepsoutside the lobby doors. The lobby, whichhas a comfortable seating area to meet orlinger with guests, doubles as a historyclass with numerous historic photos andartifacts of Lewis Wharf. In addition to on-site rental parking opportunities, marinaslips are also available.
