Weddings are funny creatures. Whetheryou think weddings can’t be too big —with hundreds of guests and gowns
shaped like cupcakes — or if you prefer (much)smaller, intimate, 10-people-on-a-beach-type weddings, you’re still going to have to face (cuedramatic chords) the wedding industry.
And “industry” it is ... what with all of the requisite planners, caterers, bakers, photographers, musicians, deejays and clergymen — not to mention the dress and tux people.
Personally, I’m a small wedding kind of person, the kind of person who resisted even a 200-wordstory on her experiences planning her teensy-tinybeach wedding.
But here goes: so far, I’ve found a dress, which Ibought from a lovely lady named Lisa at WeddingWonderland.
And it turns out that Lisa at WeddingWonderland is an old acquaintance from highschool, who reminisced with me and told mefunny stories while bringing me dozens ofbeautiful dresses.
And seemingly without effort, she reminded mewhat weddings are all about, big or small.
Weddings are about celebrating love and relationships — with your groom, absolutely; butalso with your family and friends ... and withacquaintances you happen to run into in bridalshops.
So to all of my fellow brides-to-be — good luckplanning out there, and have fun.

C ouples are faced with many decisions when planning a wedding. One often overlooked decision
concerns the guest list. Ideally, couples wouldlove to invite all their friends and family toshare in their special day. Realistically, however, budget often dictates just how many guests acouple can invite.
That reality has led to a disagreement or twoover the years, as both the bride-to-be and herfuture husband make their case for who makesthe cut. To help avoid such disagreements,
couples should consider the following tipswhen paring down their guest list.
* Make a master list as early as possible. It’simpossible to pare down a guest list if there’sno list to begin with. Once the planning processbegins, couples should separately write downall the guests they would like to invite. Onceeach is finished with their list, the hard work ofparing that list down can begin.
* Consider who’s footing the bill. If Mom andDad are paying for the wedding, then their

suggestions for the guest list should carry mostof the weight. Weddings are very expensive, andif Mom and Dad are paying they should have asignificant say who will be in attendance. Thesame principle can be applied if the couple ispaying for their own wedding. If the costs arebeing split down the middle, then both thegroom and bride-to-be should be allowed toinvite the same number of guests.
* Ask that kids stay home. Many couplesrequest that their guests leave the kids at home. While nieces and nephews might make the cut,it’s perfectly acceptable for couples to state theirpreference that children not attend. This can benoted on the invitation, addressing friends as“Mr. John Doe and guest” or “Mr. and Mrs.John Doe.” Guests should take the hint, but ifany RSVPs with their kids, be sure to call themimmediately and explain the situation. Friendsand family should understand the preference, particularly in the current economic climate.
* It’s not a reunion. Couples are often tempted to invite long-lost friends to their wedding. But cost-conscious couples must recognize their wedding is not a reunion. If thegoal is to keep the guest list under control, onlyinvite close friends and family members whohave kept in touch over the years.
* Stick to your guns. Couples vary greatlywith what they want out of their wedding. Some want a grandiose affair they can sharewith their whole family and all of their friends.Other couples want a more laid-back affair withonly those closest to them in attendance.Whatever their preference, couples shouldremain firm and not feel guilty no matter howmany guests they choose to invite or not invite.
* Cut back in other areas. If it’s proving simply impossible to agree on a reduced guestlist, consider inviting everyone and cutting backin other areas. Before signing any contracts, closely examine each one for itemsthat can be removed without drastically changing the ceremony and celebration.Chances are there are savings to be had, andthose savings might make the differencebetween inviting and not inviting anotherfriend or family member.

Brides and grooms have a few optionswhen it comes to the music played attheir ceremony and reception. Live
musicians or deejays are often the entertainment of choice. When hiring theentertainment, there are some important thingsto keep in mind.
The music of the wedding will set the tonefor the event and keep guests entertained during key moments of the day. Musicians willoften work in conjunction with a maitre d' tobe sure the reception moves along smoothlyand sticks to the schedule. Music will be played
while guests are dining and when there are opportunities for dancing.
It is essential to listen to musicians or deejays before hiring anyone to ensure whatthey're offering will fit in with the wedding. Also, it's helpful to confirm the person or people being auditioned will be the exact individuals at the wedding. Some entertainment companies hire out contractmusicians, meaning the preview musicians maynot be the same person who will perform at the

ceremony. That can potentially prove disastrous. If a certain musician or deejay is requested, be sure it is put down in writing inthe contract.
Provide the musical entertainment withsome information to further help the weddinggo off without a hitch. This may include butnot be limited to the following:
• Names of all wedding party participants sothey can be properly introduced.
• Name of the married couple, including pronunciation of the last name, if necessary.
• The title of the couple's song.• The titles of songs to be danced with
mother/son or father/daughter.
• A listing of any preferred songs.• The title of a "spotlight dance" song.• Any music that is off-limits at the
reception.• Special announcements that should be
made, such as mentioning a guest's birthday oranother special event involving guests.
• Whether a bouquet and garter toss will takeplace, and which songs should be played duringthese traditions.
In most cases, wedding musicians are professionals who have handled many weddings and are very accustomed to whatshould be done to make the night a memorable one. Trust in the expertise of themusicians, and provide guidance where necessary.
