Hello, and welcome to
2012’s UKbride Magazine!
Congratulations on your en-
gagement and thanks for choosing
us to help plan your special day.
One of the most magical aspects of
modern weddings is the diversity of
flowers, cakes, decorations and, of
course, wedding dress styles
available to you.
We’re sure you’re buzzing with
excitement at the prospect of being
able to make our special day really
personal — it’s a pleasure, but it can
be daunting too.
The purpose of our magazine,
therefore, is to suggest a few styles
for each element, offer advice and
above all, to put you in touch with as
many local suppliers as possible to
ensure you have as great a choice of
element as possible.
Organising a wedding is fun but it’s
also difficult to keep track of your
budget, meetings, what to organise
next and so on.
As such, we’d suggest that if you
haven’t done so already you take
some time to explore
www.ukbride.co.uk, our website.
In addition to a fun forum with loads
of help and advice available from
other brides to be, there are loads of
free wedding planning tools.
These are designed to ensure you
stay in control of your wedding
planning, and will help you to know
what to plan, and when.
Finally, we’ve encountered so many
really great wedding experts
throughout the making of this
magazine and we’d love you to share
in their expert advice too — as such,
we strongly
advise you to
meet as
many of our
advertisers as
possible to
compare the
choices,
styles and
prices they
have to offer.
You’ll be surprised how much advice
and how many tips you can pick up
— all of which is designed to make
your wedding more personal and
more special.
Our very best wishes for a really
happy day!
Anna Morrish

Vintage style and
Swarovski crystalswill prove on trend for 2013 weddings...
Royal Influences
1 Vintage: This will really get into full swing in 2013,
with corsets and ruffles, full lace skirts and high collars.
2 Organic Colours: Instead of bold colours, consider
soft aquas, dove greys and other neutral schemes.
3Groom Cakes: Savoury cakes, cakes of
cheeses and rustic cakes are in vogue.
4Shabby Chic: Old bird cages, vintage
lace tablecloths and upcycling.
5Statement Jewellery: 1950s inspired
chunky jewellery with lots of Swarovski!

DRESSESTO IMPRESSFind the wedding gown of your dreams with pages and pagesof beautiful dresses from leading European designers...When choosing your dress, don’t shop blind… do your
research on our wedding dress pages and on sites like
www.UKbride.co.uk, which has a searchable library of
thousands of wedding dresses. Have a rough idea of what
you’re looking for but be willing to deviate – a dress that
looks great on a magazine model may not suit if you’ve a
different stature, bust or complexion.
Style Guide:
Empire Line: Also known as Princess line. A long line
makes brides appear taller. Good for covering up wider
hips and balancing a larger bust.
A-Line: Like an Empire Line dress but with a tighter
bodice. Fuller figured brides may want to avoid this style.
Column Dress: Works well with more petite figures.
Mermaid Dress: Also known as Fishtail Dresses. Similar
to column gowns but wider from the knee. A good option
for those with small busts.
n Don’t take an entourage wedding dress shopping -
several friends and mums will inevitably like different
dresses – one friend whom you can trust to give you
honest feedback is enough!
n Ensure your budget takes account of alterations and
never buy a smaller dress that you intend to slim into.
Choose a gown that flatters your body.
n Practise walking not only in your bridal shoes but your
dress too, and use sandpaper to slightly scuff the soles of
your shoes to provide good grip.

T he most popular religion across
the UK’s 60,975,000
population is Church of England
Christianity, with over 22% of the
population declaring themselves
a member of the C of E
denomination, in the most
recent national census.
In marriage terms that relates to
over 250,000 Church of England
marriages each year, of which 40%
take place in church.
But these days, it’s even easier to
marry in a church of your choice
following Marriage Measure and
Marriage Law Review.
The review is the result of a
working group established by the
Archbishop’s Council in 2002
which addressed the process of
calling banns in church and relaxed
the limitations of where couples
may marry.
From the 2008 couples have been
able to marry in a church which has
a special significance to them rather
than in a parish church within the
parish where either the bride or
groom is resident.
Now, couples can choose to marry
in a church if they can demonstrate
a Qualifying Connection - that is,
if the bride or groom was baptised,
confirmed or if they habitually
worship in that church, or if the
person has had their usual place
of residence in the parish of a
particular church for at least
six months.
Couples can also chose to marry in
a church if their parents live or have
lived in the parish in question or have
habitually attended worship there.
In order to comply with UK civil and
church law, banns - an
announcement of your intention to
marry - must be read in the church
in which you plan to marry, on
three Sundays, usually but not
necessarily consecutively.
Those over the age of 16 may marry
CHRISTIAN MARRIAGES
CHRISTIANMARRIAGEA Christian marriage ceremony takes place every
1.7 seconds in the UK... here, we explore the
religious and legal implications of a church wedding...

27
with those aged under 18, requiring
parental consent, and the time of
your wedding must take place
between 8am and 6pm on any day -
wedding rehearsals take place
outside these times in order that the
‘practice run’
isn’t
rendered
legally
binding!
In the
Catholic faith,
arrange-
ments for
marriage are
usually made
through the
priest in the parish where you live or
the bride’s parish in order to arrange
a date. Couples should have a bap-
tism certificate, confirmation certifi-
cate or letter of freedom stating that
they have not been married before.
If your partner is not
Catholic themselves,
proof of freedom
may be
presented in the
form of a letter
from a minister,
parent or an
affidavit from a
solicitor.
In each case, the priest acts as a
civil registrar and registers the
marriage.
Civil ceremonies,
conversely, require cou-
ples to give a notice
to marry at their
local
registration
office, regardless
of the destination
of their intended
marriage and
require the
superintendent
registrar’s permission
to marry. The registrar will then
issue the relevant documentation
which must be presented at your
civil ceremony to a person
authorised to conduct weddings
within that district.
In terms of religious implications, the
Bible compares the love between a
couple as the love that Jesus had
for his
disciples.
Jesus
expressed
his love as
uncondi-
tional, hence
the words in
the marriage
ceremony;
‘for better or
worse, richer or poorer, in sickness
and in health’. These words have
been part of the Christian marriage
ceremony since the 1550s.
Christians believe that marriage is
the appropriate relationship in which
to share a life together, raise a
family, make love and
make a life-long
commitment to one
another.
Couples often
feel a greater
affinity to the
Church once they
begin their wedding
planning and are able to enrol on
both pre-wedding ‘boot camp’
courses which aim to strengthen
the bond between the couple by ex-
ploring the role of
marriage in a Christian
context, and the
Alpha Course, an
oportunity to
explore the
Christian faith
and other
religions in a
relaxed ‘non-dog-
matic’ way over ten
thought-provoking
weekly sessions, with an
optional day or weekend away;
see www.uk.alpha.org for
further details.
Wedding FACTS
Wedding rings are worn on thethird finger of the left hand
because the Romans believed that a vein ran directly from this finger to
the heart.
“Church weddings remain
popular with couples,
but recent changes in synod
law mean couples now have a
much wider choice of where
they choose to marry...”
Anna Morrish, Editor, www.UKbride.co.uk
HOST YOUR WEDDINGALMOST ANYWHERE
Currently, couples need to
marry before 6pm, in licensed
premises... and couples can’t
ordinarily marry outside, on the
beach or in their garden, for
example.
However, independent civil
celebrants like Philip Spicksley
can perform wedding
celebrations — as well as baby
naming ceremonies, renewals of
vows and civil partnerships —
to tailor a wedding to a couple’s
exact wishes.
“I can perform non-religious
ceremonies and ceremonies
with religious content, include
children and parents, and person-
alise each wedding celebration to
each couple.” says Philip,
who has been an independent
celebrant since 2007.
“Couples still go to the register
office to make their marriage
legal, but having a wedding
celebration performed by an
independent celebrant means
you can have your wedding
ceremony wherever and
whenever you wish.”
A wedding service, can cost as
little as £260, and can take
place literally anywhere; in
marquees and gardens, a cou-
ple’s favourite restaurant or on
the beach.

W hen it comes to creating a
wonderful wedding reception,
there’s no one-size fits all solution.
Our top tips will help you to create
a winning memorable reception...
The FundementalsThere are many ways to syle a
venue in terms of colour, table
dressings and the food you
choose... but you can’t
change the style,
size or location
of same.
You may not
have a clear
idea of what
you want from a
reception
but you’ll know
roughly the style or
scale of your wedding.
Chose a venue which suits the size
of your event, and the style.
Do dine or stay at your chosen
venue too to accurately assess
how happy you’ll be hosting your
reception there.
Make It Your OwnNo wedding should be
impersonal - name your tables
after your favourite films or bands,
or memorable places you’ve
visited. Search the internet for
favours that suit the theme of your
wedding, use photographs of
yourselves to create table cards or
get into the kitchen to bake
cookie favours with your
guests’ names iced
onto them.
Candles, flowers,
crystals and
favours can all
make your
wedding tables
look individual so
exploit the
opportunity to make
your wedding individual
here more than anywhere else.
Fun for EveryoneInvesting in children’s party bags of
favours will lessen the impact of
excited children at your reception -
give them things to play with such as
colouring books and (quiet!) games.

When planning your tables, the
Bride and Groom sit beside each

bride’s parents, groom’s parents,
bridesmaids, best man and usher

M arquee weddings create
versatile and unique wedding
reception venues and have become
infinitely more user friendly over
recent years. With modern
marquees boasting silk linings,
heating and lighting, and the
option to be sited almost anywhere
with enough space.
The fantastic thing about a
marquee, is that it acts an an
entirely blank canvas for you to
work with. It is a wonderful
opportunity to create a look that
totally reflects your personality.
Many suppliers, particularly larger
ones, can also provide heating and
lighting, dance floors, convenience
hire and even outside catering.
This helps to ensure that
organising your reception is as
hassle-free as possible. Suppliers
of your marquee will typically
recommend either a frame tent or
traditional pole marquee.
Aluminium frame tents are more
stable in poor weather and tend to
be warmer with less ventilation,
whilst canvas pole marquees tend
to be ideal in the summer with
better airflow.
You must provide your supplier
with detailed information about
your site – they won’t expect
accurate measurements and
technical information but the more
you can tell them the better.
Book your marquee after booking
the church but work two years in
advance, and give your
MARQUEES
MARQUEERECEPTIONSMarquee weddings are practical and versatile but take
a considerable amount organising and a little technical
know-how on behalf of your chosen contractor…
Area 7 Bride & Groom 100 pages 2012)_Layout 3 19/06/2012 10:42 Page 52
MARQUEES
What to consider whenchoosing and positioningyour marquee...
n How large is your ground?
n How level is the ground?
n How accessible is the site,
to contractors’ lorries?
n Does your site have water
and electricity supplied?
n Does your contractor have
convenience hire facilities?
n Who will provide your
outside catering?
n Will your installation be
affected by the weather?
Style Your Marquee...
Marquee specialists have
vast experience in venue
decoration — which is probably
a good thing, as there are
endless possibilities when
decorating a marquee.
Bespoke ‘Tack Off’ linings
can be fitted to a marquee’s
interior to give you a fantastic
finish in a multitude of colours.
If you are lucky enough to have
beautiful grounds or scenery,
choosing a clear perspex roof
or walls for your marquee will
really capitalise on the stunning
panaroma and creates a
fantastic view for your guests.
A great tip is to include a reveal
panel to divide off a certain
area from your guests. There is
nothing better than the look of
wonder on your guests faces
when suddenly a whole section
of the wall drops away to reveal
a stunning night club!
Find A Marquee Supplier!
See www.UKbride.co.uk to find your local
specialist!supplier as close an estimate as
possible regarding guest numbers.
An on-site meeting will establish
the size, shape and layout of your
reception, but generally your
marquee should include a
reception area, for greeting guests.
This can also function as an
additional room
to separate your
dining room
from the
elements
outside for
added warmth.
You should also
take in to
consideration
the amount of
space needed
for a dance floor,
bar area that can accommodate
those queuing for drinks without
too much ‘congestion’.
Plus additional space may be
needed for ‘reveals’ — hidden
areas of your reception like your
cake or band.
Don’t forget to
budget this
space in your
initial cost
considerations,
so you can give
potential
suppliers lots of
information.
This way you
can create
accurate,
like-for-like quotes that you
compare, thus preventing your
paying over the odds!
“Marquee weddings
are great when you
want to create a
bespoke reception.”

Wedding Fairs are a great way to source products, services and ideas,
as well as spending time with your intended in order to discuss plans for
your special day.
The most obvious benefit of attending a wedding exhibition, though, is to
sample venues’ hospitality and meet face-to-face the businesses vying
to offer you their services.
There’s also something about seeing a dress on a model which is so
much more lucid than brochure images or gowns on hangers.
Make the most of the wedding fairs you attend by ensuring you’ve a
notepad to take down details of suppliers and make a note of prices,
and a digital camera to capture images of products, favours and colours
you like.
Attending as many events as possible during your planning will not only
help to ease the planning of your wedding, but will prove a great way of
indulging yourtendency to day dream about all the elements of your wedding
gradually coming together!

THE MEN
It’s a Man’s World...Tips, trinkets and gems of wisdom for nervous grooms, best men and fathers of the
bride nervous about speeches, standing at the altar or giving away their daughter...!
Get me to the church on time...!Pay attention 007... it’s may be the
bride’s prerogative to make a
dramatic entrance, but why should
she have all the fun...?
Hire a supercar like this Lamborghini
Gallardo, which does 0-60mph in
4.2 seconds and you’ll defi-
nitely reach the church on
time...! Grooms can hire
Bond style Aston Martins,
Ferraris and Lambos, for
their arrival at the church,
for the wedding day or the
honeymoon.
Naturally, your bride will have to
pack light as the boot’s a little pokey,
but the cars will certainly look
impressive in your photos.
If you’re choosing a balmy
honeymoon destination, there’s
a topless version too!
The cost for this model is around
£2,500 for a whole weekend,

Most grooms, fathers and
best men admit to feeling
more nervous about
reading their wedding
speech than about the
ceremony itself.
The golden role for
successful speeches:
Preparation is key.
Avoid writing your speech
at the last minute, and don’t
take jokey one-liners from
the internet - your speech
will sound unstructured
and generic. Write, edit
& rehearse diligently so that
you’re familiar with your text.
Alternatively, why not cheat?
Turn to aspeech.co.uk or
sparklingspeeches.co.uk
to hire a professional writer
to bear total responsibility...!
When making your speech,
use cue cards rather than a
script and maintain eye-
contact with your audience.
Don’t forget to rehearse your
speech thoroughly!
For your stag do, consider something
that’s a little more involved than just a
night down at the pub.
Organising an event
which appeals to
all ages and goes
beyond mere
drinking will
enable you to
spread the fun over
a longer period.
Choose an
activity which appeals to all and will
enable you to involve younger and
older stags. Possibilities are endless,
whether you decide to go on a boozy
weekend abroad, or decide to go
paintballing, zorbing, or even
organise a License to Thrill spy
weekend. There
is something for
everybody!
Adventure week-
ends away are
great fun, and
there is a variety
of places to visit
around the UK
which specialise in Stag parties.

VIDEOGRAPHY
You’ve BeenFRAMEDFor many couples, the decision not to
employ a videographer to capture their
wedding day is one they come to regret...
They will also have access to
copyright licences that will enable
them to dub your favourite music
onto your DVD. A good
videographer will understand that
breach of copyright is theft – and
will no doubt expect their own work
to be treated with the same respect.
The cost of your wedding DVD is
dependant on a number of factors.
Some companies offer fully edited or
multiple camera productions.
Cutting costs may mean
compromising on both, so never
base your decision on price alone.
It is advisable to watch several
videos covering a wide price range
before making your decision.
As wedding videography is a
seasonal business most successful
videographers will become booked
months if not years in advance.

MAKE UP
Hair will grow about six inches
each year. See your hairstylist
as soon as you get engaged
and discuss your desired length
and colour for your big day.
Having your hair coloured and
trimmed regularly every six to eight
weeks will mean in a year you can
achieve another four to five inches
of healthy beautiful hair.
Make-Up MagicHire a make-up artist to come to
your home and have a make-up
practice session before your big
day. Add a couple of bottles of wine
and this can be a great hen party or
pamper night in!
Don’t go for a look that will date;
you want to look timeless. In twenty
years you don’t want to get your
photos out and think your wedding
appears dated!
Skin Care Start a good skin care regime at
least six months before the big day.
Drink plenty of water rather, avoid-
ing alcohol and smoking as this has
a huge detrimental effect on your
skin.
Moisturise day and night to main-
tain an even skin tone, this will help
to keep skin looking fresh.
On The DayEnsure your make-up artist doesn’t
use shimmer all over your face as it
will look like you are hot and greasy
on your photos. Opt for a matte
finish and only apply shimmer to the
highest areas of your face, such as
your cheek bones and brow line.
Create a natural look that will be
suitable for day and night. Consider
making your eyes look dramatic
and keep lips nude. You can always
apply a stronger lip colour for your
evening do.
a Visit to Your VenueEnsure your professional make-up
and hair artist will come to your
home or venue on your big day.
A pre-wedding trial is a must as this
is when you will have your hair and
make-up applied and you can
decide on your look for the day.

HAIR RAISING
STYLESOur suggestions for beautiful bridal
hair. Whether you’ve short, medium
or long hair, you’ll find a style to suit
on these pages...
n If you’ve got short
hair, use curling irons
to increase the fullness
of your hair or use
tiaras, fascinators and
necklaces to vary your
look and add extra
interest to your neck
and shoulders.
n Medium hair should be
curled and worn with a
tiara - try to grow your
hair a little to provide
more versatility if
you’d like to try
something new.
n If you’ve got long hair,
wear a smooth heavy
gown or large rolls
with full skirted tulle
gowns.
n If you’re already
accustomed to long
hair, leave a few tendrils
loose to prevent
your style looking
too formal.
n Choose your wedding
gown first, then your
wedding hairstyle and
only then choose
extras such as
fascinators and veils.
n If you’re colouring your
hair for the day have it
done two weeks
before but
have it
touched up
just
before the
big day.
n Use a hair-
dresser you’re
familiar with
rather than splashing
out and using
someone new.
n Take care of your hair
by using intensive
conditioning treatments
in the six months
leading up to your
wedding.

FLOWERS
C hoosing your bridal flowers
can be as scary as finding
your perfect dress, but is
just as important in the overall look
of the day.
Recommendation is a great way of
finding your florist, but it's a good
idea to visit several flower shops
too. Once you've made up your
mind of what you want, book a
consultation - it's worth the money
as you'll have lots of time devoted
to you, and you'll
be able to work
out the best
choices for your
big day.
Try to make time
on a week day
because the florist
will have more
time to discuss
ideas, as the shop
may be busy on a
Saturday.
A good florist will
always suggest
the best flowers for your colour
theme, including the size and style.
They will tailor the arrangements to
your requirements, but try and help
the florist as
much as possible.
As creative as most florists are,
they are not mind readers so
the more information you can
give them the better – pictures
from
magazines, pictures of the dress,
fabric swatches, key themes, or
special items the wedding theme is
based on - for example, if you're
wearing your mother's brooch, it
might be nicer for you
to incorporate this into
your bouquet, rather
than wear it on your
dress.

Prepare a brief, with suggestions for
style of bouquet - traditional shower
(a long, trailing bouquet, wired or in
a foam holder), garden flower posy
(country-style loose bouquet,
hand-tied or in a holder) or wire
work decorative
bouquet (flowers
are stuck to a
decorative, hand-
made wire trailing
frame) or crescent
shaped bouquet.
If you’ve a
preference, suggest
type of flowers and
consult with your
florist once you’ve
decided on your
highlight colour.
Also, consider the size of your
bouquet; if you’re small, an
enormous trailing bouquet will
overpower you - a good florist
will take the bride’s height & basic
shape into consideration.
Don’t forget plants could also be
used as table arrangements, these
can be very attractive as well as
cheaper (dependant on the plant)
and a memento for people to
take home with them at the end of
the night.
Finally, ask to see
some of your chosen
florist’s previous work
and work with them
throughout your
planning to ensure
your wedding flowers
will be as beautiful as
you dreamed.

CAKES
Having Your
CAKEWedding Cake ideas from leading
designers to create custom cakes
that will look and taste memorable!
n Consider the taste
as well as the look of
your cake. That may
sound obvious, but in
addition to enquiring
about the look of your
cake, as about
the ingredients
your chosen
expert uses,
and insist
on tasting
samples.
n Three tiers
will serve 50-200
whilst five layers is
safer for 200 guests or
more. Opt to make at
least one of your lay-
ers sponge rather than
fruitcake for those who
prefer the former.
n Consider white and
milk chocolate cakes,
miniatures and cup-
cakes as alternatives.
n Be sure of your
delivery and storage –
arrangements.
You don’t want your
cake to be ruined
before you serve it
by poor storage.
n Ensure your wedding
cake is an accurate
reflection of your
character and your
wedding. Don’t be
afraid of asking for a
bespoke design and
a particular colour
scheme.
n Traditionally, couples
save the top tier for
their first anniversary
or the christening of
their first child!

The mainstay of many wed-
ding receptions is a good
disco, and finding a pro-
fessional DJ is essential. See
www.ukbride.co.uk to find a supplier
in your area, then, meet your DJ
personally and ensure you hear
them performing live or with a demo
CD before you book them. During
your initial meeting, have a rough
playlist to hand to
ensure the music selection is
appropriate both to your tastes
and that of your guests.
Classical MusicIn addition to popular music,
consider a string quartet, harpist
or classical group to provide light
background music during your
wedding breakfast. Many can also

perform Beatles covers or similar,
and jazz groups vvcan also provide
a sophisticated touch to your
reception. Practical during your
wedding breakfast, light classical
music tends to drown out the
clattering of cutlery on crockery.

surprise your new husband or wife
by learning to dance before your re-
ception by embarking on short
courses... First Dance is a company

just about music – fireworks create
dramatic photographs and a

really wow your guests! Fireworks

firewriting at just £14 per 2ft letter!

Tribute BandsIf you’d like something a little different
to the usual disco, why not consider a
tribute band?
Consider groups such as Abba Gold
from Spot On Entertainment, Bee
Gees Fever, Bjorn Again, the
Bootleg Beatles or the UpBeat
Beatles or even Jon’s Elton or the
Blues Brothers by Henderson
Management.
These can provide music from big
names which appeal to all
generations and each creates an in-
volving, popular show to get every-

How to Make Beautiful Musicat your WeddingReception...Disco expert Marcus
Keith on how to fill
the dance floor of your
wedding reception
Chances are that your
wedding is the first time
you’ve planned a disco in
your life. There are a lot of
mediocre quality amateur DJs
out there; if you've been to a
wedding recently where the
disco was really good, try to
find out who the DJ was.
Once you're happy with your
DJ, it's time to make the
booking. You might be asked
to pay a deposit, which should
be no more than about 25%
for a reputable DJ.
The remainder should be
payable after the wedding.
Make sure that you receive a
written confirmation of the
booking.
Consider whether your DJ
should be allowed to accept
requests from guests; allow-
ing requests will keep at least
some of your guests happy,
but a few badly chosen songs
can really put a dampener on
the atmosphere.
Most DJs welcome a playlist,
provided you are confident in
your musical tastes and those
of your guests.
