rides Essence caught up with another one of Cape Town’s Top wedding photographers Riekert Cloete.

Riekert please tell us about yourself.A: I am a 36 year old kid who can’t believe that he’s living his dream! I love my awesome wife Iza, my boy Wilhelm, my family, sports, music and I will try anything new.

I am curious about EVERYTHING.I have an obsession with photography. I can talk about it 15 hours non-stop. I love people. I love weddings, I also love Cape town, the Western Cape, my country and I am proud to be a South African.

Where did you grow up?A:The bushveld and later in the Eastern Cape.

Where are you based and what geographical area do you cover?A: Durbanville. Most Weddings are in the Western Cape , but I have shot in all 9 provinces of the RSA as well as abroad.

What made you choose photography as a profession?A: The fact that it is such a creative outlet.

Did you study photography?A: No, but I have spent my whole life being a student of the craft.

When did your passion for photography first begin and what do you enjoy most about it?A: It began at the age of 13 when my parents bought me my first camera. I was really bad at it in the beginning. I love the fact that I can tell stories.

How long have you been a wedding photographer?A:10 years

How many weddings do you photograph per year?A: over the last 10 years I have averaged over 40 per year.

What sets you apart from other photographers?A: My lighting skills as well as my love of sunsets.

Are you planning on doing something different in this years wedding season?A: Not really. I plan to keep refining my craft with every wedding. Small changes that hone my skills and not big changes.

Page 10: Brides Essence Issue 13

8 Brides Essence.com - Issue 13

What are the latest photographic trends and have you implemented any of them?A: I’m not sure if it’s a trend but I am moving in the direction of editing less and less. I try to keep the images as close to “out of camera” as possible. I believe “less is more” and that will make my images more timeless. What do you offer in your bridal packages?A: CD Only and Coffee table books.

Do you take pre-wedding photographs?

A: I do offer engagement shoots as an

optional extra

Do you have any advice for Brides on

how to choose the right photographer?

A: Ask for availability and price first.

Once you know the person is available

for your date and within your price range

then decide on Style and personality.

Candice Bowler from

Whipped Patisserie

andice Bowler from Whipped Patisserie walked away from this year’s Cellarbake festival held at Nitida Wine Estate with first prize for her cheesecake. Cellarbake is a first of its kind where artisanal baked goods are paired with Nitida and Môreson wines by Culinary connoisseur and official Wine Consultant to Cellarbake@Nitida, Michael Olivier. Candice’s New York style Cheesecake was paired with Nitida’s Sauvignon Blanc. Michael told us that the Sauvignon lifts the taste of the cheese and the fruitiness of the cake.

Brides Essence caught up with Candice and chatted about her award winning Cheesecake and her humble beginnings with Whipped Patisserie.

When she was younger, Candice loved spending time in the kitchen with her mom when she used to bake; always eager to clean the mixing bowls after the bake. Her dad is no stranger to the kitchen either and is quite the culinary expert. A lot of Candice’s recipes are inherited from her mom. Candice loves being in the kitchen and even when she is not working, she will find herself in the kitchen making or baking something. Baking is her passion.

Whilst at chef school, Candice waitressed in order to help cover the bills. It was during this time of her career that she began to bake on a more professional

level. Her then employer loved Candice’s cakes and soon Candice was filling orders from her mom’s kitchen. The word got around and within a short space of time Candice was baking almost around the clock from home, supplying restaurants and coffee shops with her special cakes, muffins and desserts from one little oven at home.

Candice continued working from home for a few years, often baking until 02:00 AM and then running around from early morning to deliver the orders. Soon it became too much to always be at home / at work. One day while delivering an order in Westlake, she noticed a shop that was mostly unused. She contacted the owners and they graciously allowed her to operate from the kitchen in the premises that had mostly been the occasional conference room and odd storage space.

For about two years, Candice operated from her shop in Westlake using the kitchen to bake and fill her orders as there was more space and the kitchen was mostly kitted out. After many requests by passing patrons for her to open a shop, she decided to open her cakery to the public.

Candice has had to overcome great obstacles and many challenges in her business. Now, three years after opening Whipped Patisserie to the public, the business is booming; growing in leaps and

bounds. By popular demand, Candice started offering kids baking parties where kids are taught how to bake and make cakes. Whipped Patisserie also holds gourmet kids parties where partygoers can make their own sausage rolls, pizzas and breads.

At Whipped Patisserie, you can expect to find the finest cupcakes in Cape Town, as well as cookies, fudge and a host of other treats. Don’t forget those gorgeous specialised award winning cakes that Candice has taken years to perfect. Candice can bake a special wedding cake for you. By appointment you can taste the different cakes that Candice can offer for your wedding day. She always tries to accommodate her clients and always goes the extra mile. She is not one to sit by and let her staff do the work, she prefers to get stuck in and do the work herself and this is clearly evident by the wonderful baked goods that are produced at Whipped Patisserie. The great thing

about Candice’s wedding cakes is that she personally delivers them to your venue within Cape Town (Stellenbosch included), and brings all her supplies with her just in case something should go wrong so that she can ensure that every wedding cake is perfect.

When asked what her most valued kitchen utility is, Candice told us that her most valued kitchen tool is her palette knife. She uses this the most and is an invaluable implement for icing. She uses a mini knife for the fine icing work on her cakes; it is her baker’s sword of choice. What does the future hold for Whipped Patisserie? Candice would like to see her business grow and expand to offer new products and services. Such things as ready mix cakes, muffins and cookies; to ready made desserts and frozen meals. I am convinced that with the passion that she has, Candice can only go from strength to strength.

Many long for white beaches, gently lapped by crystal azure wavelets with hammocks strung between palm trees and no other people within miles. And then there are the rest of us. Not all can afford such expensive and exclusive honeymoons on today’s tight strings.

I have done some research and brainstorming to come up with alternative, but really cool honeymoon ideas for the masses. You may even have a reasonable honeymoon budget but don’t quite fancy all the fuss of people running around after you picking up and putting down, fetching and carrying your every demand and whim, then this article is for you too.

How clichéd it is to hear of so and so going to this Indian Ocean island for their honeymoon. I have been to a few of these locations myself and can testify that it is indeed a great place for honeymoon.

I would go to any of these destinations at the drop of a hat. Sadly, not many people wear hats nowadays and so this means fewer excuses to visit one of the aforementioned delightful tropical Indian Ocean islands.

The origins of “honeymoon” seem to be somewhat scattered and inconclusive. There seems to be some inference to Nordic folklore where a groom would kidnap his bride to be from a neighbouring village and would go into hiding until her family gave up the search. Other views point to European customs whereby the newly-weds drank mead, a honeyed alcoholic drink, for the period of a month after their nuptials. Some English poets and prose writers of the 16th and 17th century thought that it referred metaphorically to the initial full moon and subsequent waning of love as the couple aged together in the marriage.

Nevertheless, it certainly speaks of a time where husband and wife are initiated into their new relationship for a period of time before they resume the regular rigours of normal life. This then gives us an idea of the original purpose of the honeymoon

and that is a time of separation from normal daily life, family and friends, and dedicating time alone to each other to explore and discover one another without all the regular distractions. With this in mind let us take a look at some ideas that epitomise this notion.

1. A self-catering cabin in the mountains. Generally there are mountains within a few hours access of most of the country. They are dotted with establishments of this ilk. You don’t have to go with self-catering if you can afford to eat out, however this can amount to a great saving and you probably won’t be eating a lot anyway. This can be

a particularly great destination in winter, where you can snuggle up in front of a cosy log fire in the berg. Do some research

and find some specials. Make sure that all the services that you require are available.

2. A seaside cottage or resort. South Africa is home to some absolutely stunning seaside destinations. Many of which are remote, which is what most honeymooners are after. Always do your homework and ask around to make sure you find a reputable place to stay. This may however still be out of the reach of many.

3. A camping getaway. Many resorts and destinations offer private ( privé ) permanently tented accommodation with your own ablution facilities and secluded setting. Such destinations can be situated anywhere, whether in the bush, in the mountains, in the forest or at the beach. It is important to book well in advance as the better of such establishments get booked up quickly.4. Rent a house boat. There are not many destinations where this option is available

Page 39: Brides Essence Issue 13

but if you can, you will be guaranteed exclusivity and privacy. Drift around or move to another location as it suits you. You won’t be bothered by any passers by and being on the water is an experience of note.

5. Take a cross country ramble and explore the country at your own pace. There are numerous attractions on most routes. Plan your trip together and discuss things you would enjoy doing together and sites you would like to visit along the way. This planning can be fun and is a great way to get to know more about each other.

6. You could book a Slackpacking multi-day hike at many places throughout the country. Most of the tours can accomodate 2 people. Hikes range from a few days to 5 days in various locations across the country. You can choose mountains, beaches and even safari hikes. This is a luxurious way to hike as all your kit is ferried to the next stop over and meals etc. are prepared for you. 7. A cycling holiday tour is a new concept that seems to be rising in popularity.

Mar/Apr 2014 Brides Essence Magazine 37

Page 40: Brides Essence Issue 13

There are a number of operators that organise such tours where you can go at your own pace and all the accommodation and meals are organised for you. This is popular at many overseas destinations but is now becoming more popular locally.

8. Some companies offer kayaking holidays for 5 days that include accommodation along the way. These are limited though to certain rivers such as the Sundays and Breede rivers. There are also a number of operators that offer ocean and shore based tours. This can be an inexpensive and fun way to spend time together.

9. Wwoofing. No, it is not a typo, it stands for “Willing workers on organic farms”. This could be exciting for the new couple, although it is going to involve some “shoulder to the plough” kind of labour. The experience varies from farm to farm with stays from a week to a year. You can expect to be well fed and be provided with board and lodging. Join the family for meals and be a part of the community. It is a great and cost effective way to have that rural experience getting your hands a little dirty. There are many wwoofing opportunities and a lot of the terms are negotiable.

10. Horse back safaris are offered throughout South Africa. They cater for beginners and offer a whole range of experiences. One can do the “big five” safari, or try one of the other venues that offer beach, forest and bush safaris. If you are an eager equestrian then this is a great option. It is important to note for non-riders that riding can really take its toll on your body if you are unfit, but most establishments will give you freedom to decide your own pace and activities.

Many people don’t know what teeth whitening really involves. We asked BriteSmile to answer some frequently asked questions about teeth whitening. Here is all you need to know about teeth whitening.

Q: What are the main causes of dental discolouration? The main causes are eating, drinking, smoking and simply aging.

Q: How much younger does having whiter teeth make you look? You could look up to 5-10 years younger with whiter teeth. We get your teeth back to the natural whiteness they had when you were younger.

Q: How effective are at-home treatment kits. Can they be used independently or should it be in conjunction with a professional treatment?Home whitening is very effective, but it just takes much longer. It can take easily 20 hours compared to 1 ½ hours. They can be used independently. We use the at home kit as maintenance after the in chair Britesmile procedure. Q: How does the professional whitening process work?A dental specialist will apply the gel and use the cool LED Britesmile light to whiten your teeth on average 9 shades in max 1 ½ hours. Completely safe and approved by the American Dental Association already over 15 years.

A Bright Smile on your wedding day

Page 43: Brides Essence Issue 13

Q: Any daily tips for keeping teeth whiter for longer?A good electric toothbrush and non- abrasive toothpaste will help. Be careful with whitening toothpaste, some can damage your enamel badly.

Q: How does teeth whitening work?Teeth whitening is a chemical process in which the structure of the tooth is realigned and peroxide and light will speed up that process. It actually brings back the “old whiteness” of your teeth.

Q: Is teeth whitening for everyone?Yes, but unfortunately crowns, veneers and implants won’t whiten.

Q: How long do teeth whitening results last?Lasting results depend on eating habits, drinking, eating, smoking etc. Normally with Britesmile, clients redo the procedure after about 3-4 years.

Q: Will teeth whitening cause tooth sensitivity?Teeth will only be sensitive for 12-24 hours. A protective protein layer is removed during whitening which takes 24 hours to rebuild. Mainly hot and cold liquids will cause some sensitivity.

Q: Will teeth whitening weaken my teeth? No, it actually improves the condition of the mouth. Peroxide is healthy for your gums.

Q: Do teeth whiteners damage a tooth’s nerve? Some gels with a high % of peroxide can cause sensitivity for longer periods.Laser and other invasive lights can also damage the nerve, but Britesmile uses an LED light which is a cool light that only works on the surface of the teeth, and is noninvasive.

BriteSmile Years of yellowing as well as harsh staining from coffee, cigarettes, and red wine are almost magically erased in the time it takes to get a haircut, a manicure or lunch. In fact, we have clinical studies which prove that the BriteSmile whitening treatment resulted in an average improvement of 9+ shades whiter!

BriteSmile offers clients safety and science within the comforts of your dentist’s office.

Honeymoon Jet-lag blues

by Grant Derrick

hhh…, you’re finally on your flight to your exotic honeymoon location. Lay back and just allow the time to flit by. What you don’t always think of is what happens when your plane lands and you find yourselves in a very different time zone? Jetlag can rob you of one or more days of your trip and wreak havoc with your body. This is hardly what you need when you are just getting to spend quality time with you new spouse.

What is jet lag? Your body takes time to catch up to the change in time zones. Although your brain sees that it is getting dark, your body may think it is noon, or the sun may be coming up and your body is telling you to go to bed. You can experience sleepiness during the day and insomnia at night. You may even suffer symptoms such as confusion, hunger at odd times, loss of appetite, confusion and hindered concentration. To top it all, you will more than likely be somewhat irritable for at least a day or two.

• Don’t fret, there are some things you can do to reduce the effects of jet lag.

• Most important of all, make sure that all your affairs are in order. Make a checklist and check and double

A check it way before you get to the airport. Plan your trip so that you arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare. This way you will not be stressed about things that you can control. Anyone who has ever flown knows that there can be stress enough without all the extra avoidable problems. Being relaxed and calm is tantamount to coping with the possible effects of jetlag. If you are highly strung, it may be helpful to take something herbal to keep you tranquil.

48 Brides Essence.com - Issue 13

Page 51: Brides Essence Issue 13

• Some people choose overnight flights. You will depart at night and sleep on the plane. If you arrive at your destination and it is still dark then daylight is imminent. You would have slept on the plane and your body will be expecting daylight to come. If it is daytime, then again that is what your body will be expecting. On another note, many travellers find that they suffer less symptoms on day flights. I recommend that you do your homework and work out your flight times more specifically to your ETA and see what makes sense to you.

• Sleep during your flight. Best avoid sleeping pills like the plague – ever heard of “deep vein thrombosis”?. If you must use something to help you drift off, then it is also worth pointing out that trying out a new medication on a flight for the first time may not be the wisest choice, so either test it at home or use something that you know works for you. Blindfolds, neck pillows, earplugs and anything that would help you to sleep on the plane are a must.

• When you are not sleeping on the plane, try to get as much exercise as possible. Keep that blood flowing. Walk up and down the aisle and stretch your muscles as and when you can; who wants to be scrunched up in a sardine tin for hours on end? If you have an interconnecting flight, take advantage of the ground time and work those muscles and lungs.

• For 12 hours before your flight, avoid overindulging and avoid stimulants such as caffeine (not only found in coffee but in many softdrinks and energy drinks), anti-histamines and alcohol. Try to avoid alcohol on the flight as this will definitely dehydrate you and have a negative effect on your body’s ability to cope with the upcoming changes. The air inside the aircraft at altitude causes alcohol to have a more severe effect on a person. Caffeine disrupts the sleep cycle and if you do sleep, it may not be as sweet as your body might need in order to make the necessary time zone adjustments. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water prior to and during your flight.

• Make sure you are active when you reach your destination. Get outside and get some sun. This will help your system to readjust to the new time zone. If possible, avoid going to sleep immediately when you get to your hotel as you could end up sleeping for hours and when you eventually wake and try to resume a normal sleep cycle later in the day, you may find yourself wide awake at 03:00 AM.

• You could plan a stop over somewhere in the middle of your trip. This will allow your body time to catch up and the effects of jetlag will be far less when you reach your final destination.

• There is a saying among frequent flyers : “West is best, East is the beast”. Although there are many arguments for and against this theory, it seems to make sense that you should fly toward or with the light and not away from it. We are far better suited to an extra long day than an extra long night.

• When you embark on your flight, set your watches, clocks and cellphones to the time zone that you will be going to. This will help you to be mentally prepared for the time shift and this will subconsciously be a great advantage.

Enjoy your Honeymoon.

The ReviewsBULLET PROOF MARRIAGEyOUR SHIELD AGAINST DIVORCERENATO & CRISTIANE CARDOSO

Preparing for your “happily ever after” can be done with the help of Bullet Proof Marriage.

The authors, Renato & Cristiane, speak honestly from their experiences in their relationship. They share openly about the difficulties they have faced, both as a couple, and as individuals in their marriage; and how they overcame the problems.

This book is practical and humorous. It is broken up into four sections: Understanding marriage, Emotion versus reason, Taking marriage apart and putting it back together and Bullet proofing it. Each section is well written with useful hints on what to do in a certain situation and how to find what works for you and your marriage to get through difficult times. One of the things I enjoyed most about this book is how real the authors are and how they realise that every person is different and therefore no two marriages or their problems are the same.

Bullet Proof Marriage is not only for those of you who are getting married. It will also be very useful for couples who are happily married to help them prepare for the difficult times that they may face in the future. To the couples already experiencing the difficult times this is a must read. Although the truths in this book may be a hard pill to swallow, I firmly believe they will help restore and repair what has been damaged and broken.

Renato & Cristiane have been married for more than two decades. They have given hundreds of talks on marriage in many different countries including South Africa. They have a weekly radio and television programme called The Love School where they teach many of the tools offered in this book.

My heart was blessed...

by the sound of music

64 Brides Essence.com - Issue 13

I had the privilege of watching a charming rendition of The Sound of Music presented on its opening night at The Teatro at Montecasino in Fourways. The feeling of anticipation as the lights dimmed for the start of the show was brilliantly magnified by the orchestra, directed by Louis Zurnammer.

The story is told of Maria Rainer who is asked to leave the Nuremberg Abbey to become governess to the 7 Von Trapp children shortly before Austria is invaded by Germany.

Maria has never been a governess before and the children are not particularly

keen on having a governess which allows for some very funny and heart warming scenario’s. This is a beautiful story filled with love, humour and of course music and song. Some of the most memorable songs of all time are sung in this musical, including “Do Rae Mi”, “My Favourite Things” and, of course, “The Sound of Music”.

Bethany Dickson, who played the role of Maria, put on an outstanding performance. Her love of music was so apparent in this show and it looked to me like she was having a tremendous amount of fun. Bethany has an incredible talent of drawing

by Taryn Zoë Gurr

Page 67: Brides Essence Issue 13

May/June 2014 Brides Essence Magazine 65

the spectators into the story which stirs up such enthusiasm from the audience and her fellow actors alike. Her affection and interaction with the children in the show was delightful.

Captain Von Trapp was masterfully played by Andre Schwartz who embodied the character of the captain with skill and confidence. His warmth towards the other performers, particularly the children was endearing and brought a wonderful tenderness and sincerity to his character and the narrative.

Janelle Visagie, who plays mother Abbess, portrayed this role splendidly. Her singing was superb and she and Bethany sang some beautiful harmonies. She embodied her character very skilfully indeed.

All of the children in this production are so talented and played their roles with excellence. There was a real sense of camaraderie among them and it seemed to me that they were having an awesome time performing. Their signing was superb. They really were the stars of the show.

The set design and lighting is fantastic and draws you into the story.

Up until I saw this show I would not have said I was a fan of musicals, but this production has changed my mind entirely. I enjoyed the show immensely and highly recommend it.

This is family entertainment at its best! The Sound Of Music will be showing at

the Theatro from 5 April 2014 to 8 June 2014. Ticket prices start at R125.00 per person and can be purchased from computicket.

The wedding Expo by Taryn-Zoë Gurr

“Africa’s biggest wedding event” was a spectacular display of all things wedding. From venues, to stationery, shoes and dresses to everything you could possibly need (or want) for your wedding was on display at this spectacular extravaganza at the Coca-Cola Dome on 5 and 6 April 2014.

The expo was very well organised and everything was well signposted and laid out. So if you were a bride on a mission to find one or two specific services you could refer to the Wedding Planner, supplied on entry, and find all the stalls that were offering the specific product

or service you were looking for. Browsing from stand to stand was a lot of fun too. I saw some especially creative ideas for those on a shoe string budget and some very extravagant options for those whose budget has no restraint.

The fashion shows were an absolute must see. This year’s shows were beautiful. We have wonderful designers in South Africa whose creativity and flair was really something to behold.

The Wedding Expo is an absolute must for any couple getting married. Watch this space and we will let you know when the next expo is so that you don’t miss it.
