iPad Pilot Program

Trying to determine where mobile devices fit into our school system.

Why are we doing this?

• Improve test scores• Introduce new technology to students• Prepare students for next generation

assessments• Engage students• Integrate technology in the classroom• Develop technology leaders in schools

Pilot Specifics

• Identify what grade level and schools to conduct the pilot– We chose grades 5, 6, and 9 at Blythe-Bower, CMS,

and CHS respectively• Identify a group of students– 75 students total– We used three different methods

• 5th Grade chose their middle students• 6th grade chose random students• 9th grade chose at risk students

More Pilot Specifics

• We chose the iPad because of the familiarity of the device with teachers involved. Most teachers already had an iPad or were getting one.

• We wanted to ensure that students had access to the Internet from anywhere. We chose the 3G enabled iPad 2.

Cost of the Pilot

• iPads - $529 each• Cases (Nashville’s own Griffin Survivor) - $40

each• AppleCare+ - $99• Apps – about $30 per student• Data Plan (Verizon)- $34 from state contract• MDM – about $7500 for 100 users

Securing the Device

• Create a profile• Distribute with MDM• Email VPN configuration• Distribute apps

Securing the Internet Demo

• Create account on firewall• Download mobile config file• Edit in Notepad++• Email to device

Lessons Learned

• iPad is a consumer device• Students create unique iTunes account. Apps

stay with the account• iPads must connect through 3G at school• E-Rate will not reimburse for cost outside of

school day• Students will protect the device for the most

part• Very expensive
