BRIEF 3:: RSA SUSTAINABILITY
A SUSTAINABLE GREETING CARD
BRIEF: Create and produce a product whose life cycle exemplifies cradle-to-cradle production in order to persuade people to reduce waste and be more efficient with the planet.
Live RSA Competition Brief:: Deadline {22/03/13}
This Christmas card takes a sustainable approach in reducing the amount of print-ing, using eco-friendly paper stocks and in being fully recyclable. The underlying design concept is to provide the recipient with a sustainable gift that they can interact with and keep, whilst also incorporating a number of design details to improve its environmental credentials above and beyond paper choice and inks.
The card is made up of two elements: a thicker un-printed card stock (150 x 150 mm) and an inserted band of coloured card (119 x 119 mm).
The Christmas tree shapes will be die cut out of 250gsm brown recycled card stock and have a coloured paper insert slotted into place in order to create the colour of the trees rather than printing this colour, which will reduce printing costs. The green coloured paper insert is made out of 300gsm Reindeer poo and Christmas Tree seeded paper, allowing it to be planted by the user as a means of recycling.
GREETING CARD DESIGN
The type on the spine directs the user to the instructions on the inner left hand page, which also includes visual instructions on how to plant the seeded paper in order to reach a wider target audience. By following the instructions presented on the inner page of the card and planting the seeded paper insert, the user can reduce waste and grow their very own Christmas tree ready for next year.
The cards will be accompanied by brown recycled paper envelopes to match the brown card stock. Both these and the brown card are also recyclable.

DIE CUT PATTERN
The Christmas tree pattern has derived from a hand drawn image and has been designed to retain this hand drawn element.
As an alternative or to create a range, the die cut pattern could instead be snowflakes, using white card stock for the outer card and blue stock for the card insert.
This digital version could also be used as the design for an e-card.

A SUSTAINABLE NOTEBOOK
This ‘uColour’ notebook uses the same sustainable notion as the greetings card, using a recycled 300gsm Reindeer poo and Christmas tree seed paper as a paper insert. This paper insert has a pattern printed onto it using black vegetable based ink. The product will come with a pack of small coloured pencils to allow the user to colour in the paper insert and create a coloured pattern on the cover of their notebook, hence the name ‘uColour’.
The cover of the notebook is made from 0.5mm greyboard. The notebook is hand bound using a Japanese stitch and wax coated coloured thread.
The instruction card is printed using vegetable based inks onto 300gsm Ellie poo paper and mounted onto 0.5mm greyboard. This card will instruct the user how to use the notebook and recycle the materials in an efficient manner.
The notebook, pencils and instruction card are packaged in a cellophane packet which is fully biodegradable.
