Baltic Sea in Brief
• The current surface area of the Baltic Sea (Figure 2) is approx. 420,000 km2, its volume is 21,000 km3. The extent of its catchment area exceeds• The extent of its catchment area exceeds 1,700,000 km2. Therefore, the catchment area is approximately five times as large as the surface area itself.
• The average depth of the Baltic Sea is just 55 m, compared to other landlocked seas such as the Mediterranean whose average d th i 1 000 Th t t d th f thdepth is 1,000 m. The greatest depth of the Baltic Sea is only 450 m.

• The 1974 Convention• For the first time ever, all the sources of pollution around an entire
sea were made subject to a single convention, signed in 1974 by the then seven Baltic coastal states. The 1974 Convention entered into force on 3 May 1980.
• The 1992 Convention• In the light of political changes, and developments in international
environmental and maritime law, a new Convention was signed in 1992 by all the states bordering on the Baltic Sea, and the European Community. After ratification the Convention entered into force on 17 January 2000. The Convention covers the whole of the Baltic Sea area, including inland waters as well as the water of the

sea itself and the sea-bed. Measures are also taken in the whole catchment area of the Baltic Sea to reduce land-based pollution.

• HELCOM MARITIME organises regular meetings involving representatives from inter-governmental organisations, non-governmental organisations, maritime transportation authorities and pollution incident response organisations.
• HELCOM MARITIME works closely together with other international bodies such as the International Maritime

Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a system that makes it possible to monitor ships from other ships, and from shore basedpossible to monitor ships from other ships, and from shore based stations. An ECDIS is not only an adequate replacement for the paper nautical chart but also a system containing all information important for navigation that can be called up at any time and without p ydelay.
