Raising women’s pension age is a scandal

Hadleigh highlights the blight of Tory cuts

Meet Jo SwinsonLiberal Democrat leader

JO swINsON, 39, won the Lib Dem leadership in July. She became the first woman and the youngest person to hold that position.

Jo was Britain’s youngest MP when she defeated Labour to win her seat in 2005. As a Business Minister between 2012-2015, she successfully

introduced shared parental leave and clamped down on unscrupulous payday loan lenders.

she has set out ambitious plans for the Liberal Democrats to win the next General Election and deliver a better future for our country.

HaDLEiGH’S dilapidated town centre with its Library clinging on by its fingertips all as a result of Tory austerity. They have no idea how

to get the town moving again. a Lib Dem MP would be a big boost for the area. John Howson said “i am in despair that so many town centres, like Hadleigh’s are still suffering under Tory cuts, so many promises are made but local people are let down.”

FoR years Canvey people have complained about inadequate access to Canvey island.

Having all access roads converging onto the A130 roundabout cannot be safe. Local independent Councillors have bravely fought for a new separate safe access by extending and bridging the Northwick Road, linking the island to the Pitsea area. The Tory government have denied funding. ironically it is something EU could be asked to help pay.

iT’S the quiet scandal.Millions of women, born in the 1950s, had

their lives turned upside down when the government raised the retirement age from 60 to 66.

The impact of that decision can be seen and felt everywhere. Reasonable notice period - or lack of it - is the nub of the problem.

Women who had carefully planned for retirement suddenly found that life choice snatched away by an inept and uncaring government. The changes especially affect those with the least resources, at a time in their lives when they need the financial support of a planned-for pension.

it was this issue that eventually led campaign group Backto60 to the High Court. They were looking for compensation for the money lost due to the increase in pension age. Their argument that the changes were

discriminatory were dismissed by judges. However, it is likely they will launch an appeal.

Liberal Democrats, the party that invented social welfare more than 100 years ago, are demanding better for the four million women who have been touched by this revision.

at our recent conference in Bournemouth delegates passed a motion that everyone affected should be properly compensated for the failure of government to properly notify them of changes to the state pension age. John Howson fully endorses that motion and is convinced our party is on the right side of history.

As Liberal Democrats we believe in creating a fairer society. These pension shortcomings are just one example of how some groups in society are suffering under this harsh Conservative regime. it’s time for a change.

CLiMaTE change and air pollution threaten our future. Working with the EU enables us to set high environmental

standards and work together to protect our planet. Global problems need global solutions. The Liberal Democrats will put Britain on a path to becoming carbon neutral at the earliest possible date.

THE British economy is not fit for the 21st century.Labour and Conservative governments have pandered to

monied interests for too long. Too many people are in low paid, insecure jobs; high streets are being left behind and small businesses are under huge pressure.

The Liberal Democrats will stand up to power and privilege to build an economy that works for you and we’ll take action to correct injustices.
