WITTON BARRACKS PARK Draft Concept Plan July 2017 Brisbane City Council is committed to building an active and healthy city where residents and visitors can enjoy Brisbane’s beautiful parks and recreational facilities. The Witton Barracks Park project is part of this vision, and the redevelopment will turn this site into a space for the community. In late June 2017, an interim green open space was opened to the community at the front of the Witton Barracks Park site. Council is seeking feedback on the draft concept design for the site. SITE HISTORY The Witton Barracks was previously owned by the Australian Defence Force and played a vital role in military intelligence during World War II. The three brick and timber cell blocks (c1942-43) and a related Prisoner of War (POW) exercise yard are important surviving evidence of the only purpose- built WWII facility in Australia for holding POWs to obtain intelligence information. Council purchased the site in 2016 and is committed to opening up the Witton Barracks as a district park – as identified in Council’s Local Government Infrastructure Plan – and establishing the site for community use, which includes repairing/refurbishing the existing brick and timber cell blocks (c1942-43). The purchase of the site also preserves a corridor for future development of the road network. The Witton Barracks Park project scope does not include design or construction of future road infrastructure. The alignment and timeframe for any proposed bridge has not been determined. The rich history of the site will be incorporated into the design of the park. HAVE YOUR SAY Council encourages community members to provide feedback about the draft concept plan (on the reverse side). All feedback will be considered during the design phase, which is currently underway. The comments and suggestions that people provide through this consultation process will help Council refine the overall concept design for the Witton Barracks site and help Council provide park facilities that meet the community’s needs. There will be other opportunities in the future to ‘’have your say” on the Witton Barracks site. Your feedback is important and will help us deliver a park that meets the needs of the community.

WITTON BARRACKS PARKDraft Concept PlanJuly 2017 Brisbane City Council is committed to building an active and healthy city where residents and visitors can enjoy Brisbane’s beautiful parks and recreational facilities.

HOW YOUR FEEDBACK WILL BE CONSIDERED Council is committed to incorporating community feedback and suggestions about the park design where possible. However, a broad range of factors must be considered as part of the design process, including:

• long-term maintenance requirements • compliance with all relevant legislation, policies, principles and standards • budget and site constraints.

All community feedback will be considered and will be incorporated into the plan where possible.

PHASES STAGE 1 - Maintenance and repair works. COMPLETE 2016 INTERIM PHASE – Provide interim open space on the site for community use. COMPLETE JUNE

2017 STAGE 2 – Finalising the plan for future use of the site. FUTURE STAGES – Activate the site for community and parkland use.

Council is committed to keeping the local community informed and will provide information about future stages of the project as information becomes available.
