Abra Brisbin Associate Professor Mathematics Women are underrepresented in mathematics, but little is known about women’s participation in mathematical subfields, such as combinatorics or probability. We analyzed a data set of 174,074 math papers from the arXiv preprint server. We used a list of given names classified by native speakers to infer each author’s gender, and used bootstrap confidence intervals to classify mathematical subfields as having below average, above average, or average representation of female researchers, relative to the overall proportion of female authors. Practices in above-average subfields, such as support for undergraduate research, may help improve representation of women in mathematics overall.
