Our thermostatic mixing valves, taps and showers are designedfor consistently reliable performance and signicant waterand energy savings.

At Bristan, were proud of our heritage

and reputation as one of the most highlyrespected British suppliers of quality water

controls. Established in 1871, the Gummers

brand became a name synonymous with

    quality, safety and performance, with

    products specied in washrooms across

the UK. This legacy has now come into the

Bristan brand and the signicantly greater

resources of Bristan and the Masco Group

are now focused on building and further

    developing that hard-earned reputation.

Bristan is a member of a number ofindustry bodies that focus on raising

    standards and promoting best practice.

By working with these bodies and through

    our own independent research, we

have been able to develop an in-depth

    understanding of current and emerging

trends which forms the basis for future

    product design.

In addition, the research, design and

testing of products is carried out in close

    collaboration with professional speciers

    to ensure that constantly changing

    requirements are met and exceeded.

    Our continuous improvement programme

and active quality and environmentalmanagement systems are key to

    meeting customer expectations. Our

    quality management is achieved through

    structured processes and a control

    system which includes rigorous testing

to ensure that every blending valve and

shower valve performs to the highest

    safety standards. We are regularly

    independently audited to ISO 9001:2008

    standards.

Products designed to lastCareful consideration at the design and

    development stages helps to ensure

    that Bristan products offer excellent

    performance with minimal use of

    resources. High quality materials,

    controlled processes and rigorous testing

on our in-house test rig result in products

    that have long life cycles.

    Post-installation support includes fault

    diagnosis and, most importantly, the

provision of spare parts. We provide

customers with advice on care and

    maintenance, helping to ensure minimum

    down time and otherwise uninterrupted

product use. Many products include easy-

    maintenance features such as access

    panels and easily accessible serviceable

parts. It is measures such as these

that enable you the specier to choose

Bristan, calm in the knowledge that whole

life cost has been carefully considered.

    PERFORMANCE, QUALITY & RELIABILITY

    Environment

It is Bristan policy to conduct all business

of people and preservation of the

environment. We achieve this by applying

    stringent business management systems.

The Bristan range of water controls

is designed with the philosophy that

every drop counts and products can

help to signicantly reduce water and

    energy usage.

    Water and energy saving products:

bath shower mixers which maintainconsistent temperature and reduce

    waste of hot water

Timed ow controls both manual and

electronic with different time delays to

suit the requirements of the individual

Water efcient taps and mixers most

are tted with a ow regulator to help

    save water in non-domestic applications

    Showerheads with additional spray

and 7 litre ow regulators as standard.

    Safety First

Safety is of paramount importance at

Bristan which is why all of our products

are quality tested at every stage of

the production process. Our range of

    thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) has

also been designed to automatically shut

off in the event of hot or cold water failureand are TMV2 and TMV3 accredited,

    Design and

    Ease of Use

At Bristan, we continually invest in new product development toensure that our products not only excel in terms of safety andperformance, but are also attractively designed and are easy toinstall, use and maintain.

    Easy to install

Ease of installation is a key focus in thedesign of Bristan products. Our shower

panel offer demonstrates this. The mixing

valve range has taken into consideration

    varying installation requirements to

ensure Bristan has the right product for

    each application. Most ranges feature

a choice of models to suit a host of

    requirements.

    Easy to Use

Careful consideration is made during the

design process to ensure that Bristanproducts are easy to use by all ages and

abilities. Our Pulse 8 capacitance range

is an example of this in action. These

    non-touch taps and showers use

    capacitive-sensing technology to sense

when a hand is moving within the range

    of the outlet.

Other products in our range incorporate

long levers which can be easily and safely

operated by arm or elbow, while push

    button controls require minimum effort

    and are self-closing.

    In addition, thermostatic controls

with TMV2 and TMV3 approval provide

reassurance and protection for those who

are less mobile and may not be able to

react quickly to a change in temperature.

The Bristan DocM Showering Pack has

been designed to make showering safeand easy and to comply with sanitary

requirements of Document M of the

Building Regulations 2000, as well as

    with BS8300.

    Easy to Maintain

At Bristan, we understand that servicing

    and maintenance are essential aspects

    of infection control and building

management. With this in mind, we

    have included several easy access

features across our product range. Ourthermostatic blending valves, for example,

are available with isolation elbows that

enable them to be easily serviced without

having to shut off the water supply, while

the serviceable parts on our Solo T3

range can be accessed from above the

    bath or basin.

We also continuously seek feedback as to

how we can improve our products so that

they are easier to maintain. For instance,

for Derby Hospital, we added a small

access point to the front of our shower

panel to help them reduce servicing from

a two man job that took an hour to a one

man job that took just 15 minutes. This

clever design tweak is helping them to

save around 1,500 man hours every year.

Bristan products arecleverly designed so that

they are easy to install, use and maintain

    Innovation

When it comes to product innovation, Bristans continualinvestment in design and development, together with ourexperience, ensure that we are able to push new boundaries.

In an ever changing landscape of

legislation and regulation, Bristan investssignicantly in new product development

to ensure that our portfolio is regularly

updated to suit continually evolving needs.

Our in-house team work closely with

    organisations including Medilink, the

    TMVA and also customers, developing

products that reect the needs of both

our speciers and end users. Thats why

we have developed features such as Fast

Fit, Easitherm and ecosmart. Its also why

we develop products that offer liveablestyle for the end user, which means

stylish products that are also easy to care

    for and use.

And, once a product has been launched,

we undertake an ongoing review so

that we can continuously improve its

    performance.

Talking to customers to understand their

needs is an essential part of our newproduct development and improvement

process. Within our range youll nd

    HTM64-compliant showers and taps

with a unique safe-touch surface to

prevent accidental burns when in use and

    integral pasteurising systems to minimise

the risk of infection. Youll also nd

several products developed to meet the

growing need for water efciency; every

thermostatic mixing valve comes with a

5 or 7 litre ow regulator for example,

and products like our mechanical timedow control help to reduce the amount of

water typically wasted in a washroom.

The most recent addition to our portfolio

is our new generation Pulse 8 capacitance

range of taps and showers which

harnesses the natural energy from the

human body to control the ow of water.

You can nd out more about these on

    page 269.

    Delivering safe water

    temperatures with a TMV

    Safe discharge temperatures for bathing

    and showering facilities are generally

    between 37C and 46C. There is a

    conict, therefore, between hot water

    storage requirements and delivery

temperatures, if scalding is to be avoided.

The solution lies in thermostatic mixing

valves which allow water to be stored and

    distributed at high temperatures with

outlet temperature being reduced at the

    point of use.

    Maximum outlet temperatures

    are as follows:

    Bath 46C*

    Shower 41C

Washbasin 41CBidet 38C*37-37.5C recommended for bathing children*43C in premises covered by the Care Standards Act 2000*44C for unsupervised bathing in NHS applications

    Temperature should never exceed 46C.

This allows a tolerance of +/- 2C to

remain within the maximum of 48C

    stipulated by the Building Regulations.

    Pressure and ow rates

The maximum ow rate supplied by a

mixing valve is determined by the pressure

of the water arriving at the valve. Flow

regulators are supplied with all Bristan

TMVs which can restrict the ow for water

    efciency purposes. Available for different

ow rates, these can be tted either at the

valve or at the outlet to more accurately

    control the ow.

The specic combination of hot and cold

supplies entering the valve governs the

maximum ow rate that it can provide. Valve

selection is determined by these conditions,

    as shown below.

    Pipework

Current guidance on the prevention and

control of legionella advises that each outlet

should be tted with its own TMV, with

pipework from the valve no longer than 2

metres. Any spur to a TMV from a hot water

recirculation system should not exceed 5

    metres.

    Water quality

Water quality, for example hardness and

acidity, can have a major impact on the

operation of a mixing valve. All TMVs

are supplied with strainers to reduce the

risk of debris in the pipework affecting

    their operation. Corrosion, known as

dezincication, can occur in brassproducts and is attributable to acid levels

    in the water.

What type of TMV to specifyBuildCert provides independent third party certication for TMVs against the

requirements of the NHS Estates Model Engineering Specication D08 (TMV3) and the

requirements of BS EN 1111 and 1287 (TMV 2). All valves complying with the scheme

also satisfy the requirements of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 and

the Water Byelaws 2000 in Scotland and Northern Ireland and therefore have Water

    Regulations Scheme approval.

    Specifying for Education

Specifying for education is serious business.Safety is of paramount importance andthermostatic water controls are recommended.Water controls also need to be durable enoughto withstand tough treatment and easy to useby small hands. And, with the average pupilestimated to use around 4,000 litres of waterevery year, water efciency is vital.

    EDUCATION

    Extensive research into the changing

requirements of modern educationalfacilities and the need to create a

    child-friendly environment are the key

drivers behind our education range. Tough,

durable and safe, the range also offers ease

of use, and water efciency combined with

the exibility to t any type of installation.

    Safety and compliance

    The Water Supply (Water Fittings)

Regulations 1999 recommend the use of

    thermostatically controlled mixing valves

for safety in schools, public buildings andother public facilities.

Bristan offers a range of TMV3 approved

    products which include under basin

blending valves, shower valves and group

mixing valves that operate a number of

outlets like group showers or a row of

    basins. Rigorously tested and independently

approved by BuildCert, our TMV3 approved

valves will shut down the water ow

immediately if the cold or hot supply fails.

This is vital in the prevention of scalding or

even cold water shock. It also minimises the

risk of legionella by taking the stored hot

water at 60C and mixing it in the correct

proportions with the cold supply to deliver

a safe temperature at point of use.

    Durability

From push taps for small hands to

    hardwearing shower panels for school

changing rooms, Bristan products feature a

    robust, tamper-resistant design to withstand

    tough treatment and deter vandalism.

Corrosion-resistant nishes on mostranges also prolong the life of the product.

    Ease of use

Many products are designed for easyoperation by small hands. Pulse 8

    non-touch taps automatically turn on

and when paired with a thermostatic

mixing valve they deliver water at a

    safe temperature preventing scalding.

    Thermostatic showers have positive

    controls or dials and factory-set

    maximum temperatures for safety.

    Easy to maintain

In a busy education environment, its

vital that any product is easy to maintainand service. Bristan products have been

designed with this in mind; thermostatic

    blending valves are available with

isolation elbows that enable them to be

easily serviced without having to shut off

the water supply, the front of the shower

panels is easily removed providing access

to the serviceable parts, and the Solo T3

range of taps and mixers can be serviced

    at the head.

    Water efciency

    In todays environment, everyone

has a responsibility to reduce water

    consumption. Bristan timed ow controls

switch off after a specic amount of time,

    providing a practical, effective solution.

    Choose from electronic or manual

timed ow controls for taps and showers,

with the added benet of minimising

the risk of ooding caused by taps and

    showers accidentally or deliberately being

    left running.

    Case study:Oasis Academy, Bristol

Water comes at a high cost for schools so, for a new sports facilityat Oasis Academy in Bristol, the TFP1001 Stainless Steel ShowerPanel with Timed Flow Control was specied to deliver a generousconstant ow while eliminating the risk of wastage or ooding.

    SPORTS & LEISURE

    Case study:Bath Rugby Club

A robust environment needs a robust solution. Timed ow controlshowers were vital at Bath Rugby Club to manage heavy post-training usage. The TFP3001 Timed Flow Shower Panels keepwater output under control while providing an invigorating showerand its slimline oor-to-ceiling design offers the security neededin any sport or recreational facility.

Bristan offers a wide choice of products

that are ideal for specication in leisure

    facilities.

    Safety

    The Water Supply (Water Fittings)

Regulations 1999 recommend the use of

    thermostatically controlled mixing valves

for safety in schools, public buildings and

    other public facilities.

Bristan offers a range of TMV3 approved

    products which include under basin

    blending valves, shower valves and

group mixing valves that operate a

number of outlets like group showers or

a row of basins. Rigorously tested and

    independently approved by BuildCert,

Bristan TMV3 approved valves will shut

down the water ow immediately if the

cold or hot supply fails. This is vital in

the prevention of scalding or even cold

water shock. It also minimises the risk

of legionella by taking the stored hot

water at 60C and mixing it in the correct

proportions with the cold supply to deliver

a safe temperature at point of use.

    Durability

From push controls for showers and

taps to hardwearing shower panels for

    changing facilities, Bristan products are

    designed to withstand tough treatment.

    Ease of use

    Taking account of varying capabilities,

many products are designed for easy

operation. Lever and push button controls

are easy to use and can be operated even

by an elbow or st. Pulse 8 non-touch

taps and shower plate offer even more

    exibility.

    Water efciency

Thermostatic controls enable precisewater temperatures to be quickly reached

    and maintained, helping to reduce

wastage of both water and energy. The

range of timed ow controls for taps and

    showers includes products with different

time delays to suit the requirements

of the individual installation as well as

    reducing water wastage. Choose from

electronic or manual timed ow controls,

with the added benet of minimising

the risk of ooding caused by taps and

    showers accidentally or deliberately being

    left on. Showerheads include additional

spray inserts, allowing the option of water

    economy or full ow.

    HOSPITALITY

Design, style and exibilityMany of Bristans design-linked tap and

shower families offer a wide choice of

options and so have the capability to suit

    almost any bathroom conguration. On-

trend and constantly refreshed, the collection

showcases a range of design styles and price

points. This means that whether you are

specifying for guest bathrooms, public areas,

bathrooms for the less able or spa facilities,

you are likely to nd a solution within

    these pages.

    Ease of use

Its important to guests that every aspect of

their stay away from home is trouble and

    stress-free. Understandably, it can really

affect a guests overall enjoyment if a tap

or shower is difcult to use. So Bristan

go to considerable lengths to ensure that

our products are genuinely intuitive. Many

products take account of varying guest

    capabilities and are specically designed

for easy operation, whether they are tted

in DDA* facilities or normal bathrooms.

Lever taps and quarter turn controls with

    ceramic cartridges provide smoother, easier

operation. No-touch taps offer even more

    exibility and temperature limiting features

    prevent scalding. Thermostatic showers have

positive controls or dials and a maximum

    temperature stop.

    *facilities compliant with the Disability

    Discrimination Act

Water efciencyFeaturing an innovative Eco-Click device,

Bristans ecosmart collection can help to

save water without the need to compromise

    on style. Thermostatic controls on

selected models mean that precise water

    temperatures are reached quickly and

maintained, helping to reduce wastage of

both water and energy. Most showerheads

include additional spray inserts, allowing you

the option of water economy or full ow.

A selection of ow regulators is alsoavailable, enabling performance to be

balanced with water economy. They can be

retro-tted, which is ideal if you want to stick

with your current product specication. For

public areas, electronic or manual timed

ow controls offer the added benet of

minimising the risk of ooding caused by

taps and showers accidentally being left

running whilst preventing overuse of our

    precious resource.

    Easy to maintain

    Keeping bathrooms and washrooms looking

as pristine as the day they were completed

is a constant battle for housekeeping and

    maintenance teams. Bristans durable

    polished chrome nishes can withstand

harsh treatment and our ceramic disc and

cartridge technology, at the heart of most

    ttings, requires virtually no maintenance.

However, constant use calls for regular,

planned maintenance and it is for this

purpose that Bristan offers an extensive

selection of spare parts. From shower hoses

to inlet lters and cartridges, spare parts areavailable for rapid delivery.

    Case study:Drayton Manor Hotel

When choosing taps and showers for its brand new 150bedroom hotel, the owners of Drayton Manor Theme Park chosecontemporary style and value for money from Bristan. And, for hotwater safety for their guests, they added thermostatic mixer valvesfor good measure.

Our society is changing, cultures are evolving and so are the ways we live. This has an impact on bathrooms and washrooms. The needs of the young canbe similar to our changing needs as we get older: loss of hearing, eyesight,

grip, mobility and intellectual capacity may dwindle and therefore product selectioncan make all the difference to maintaining quality of life for each generation.

    INCLUSIVE DESIGN

    Everyone deserves good design and

Bristan believes that bathing and washing

facilities should be accessible to all. This is

the thinking behind Bristan iD, a collection

of easy-to-use products developed in close

    cooperation with respected occupational

    therapist, Kate Sheehan.

    Bringing easy-to-use and stylish

bathroom facilities within the reach of

every project, the iD range encompasses:

Lever operated taps and showers with

    sequential control for both temperature

    and ow

    Non-touch taps and showers which

    sense the users proximity

    Thermostatically controlled taps and

    showers which quickly achieve and

    maintain a constant temperature

Document M approved completeshowering and changing room solutions

Showers and taps with technology that

    ensures safe surface temperature

Shower kits with a one touch slider

    mechanism and extended hose

Easy to use accessories including grab

    rails

iD offers a choice of products for both

    domestic and non-domestic projects.

    Whilst catering for more institutional

requirements, the collection goes farbeyond standard offerings with designs

combining both style and function. In

    domestic applications, for example, it

    enables Occupational Therapists to give

choice and control back to their clients,

condent in the knowledge that all of the

    products have been carefully selected

with ease of use in mind.

    Guidelines are also available from

    our specication team on critical

    measurements to ensure that products

    are positioned for optimal comfort.

    Created by an Occupational Therapist,

the sheets highlight the general space

required for a comfortable, easy to use

    environment for everyone.

    Building Regulations Part M

Businesses which provide a service have

a duty under Part M to make reasonable

    adjustments to any physical barriers.

Amendments in 2004 to Part M of the

    Building Regulations legislate that all

    non-domestic buildings should offer

    reasonable access so that people

with disabilities can use the buildings

    facilities, including washing and

    showering.

    The requirements apply to:

    newly built domestic and non-domestic

    buildings

    extensions or material alterations to

    existing non-domestic buildings

material change of use in all or part

of an existing building into a hotel,

    boarding house, institution, public

The Bristan portfolio makes specifying forsuch projects simple and straightforward.

    ECOSMART

As the subject of sustainability gathers momentum, so the demands haveincreased for bathroom and washroom products which address environmentalconcerns. This increased emphasis on nding ways to save water and energy

has been largely prompted by the introduction of regulations in new housing.A similar approach will almost certainly be adopted for non-domestic projects.

    Speciers, owners and facilities

managers are faced with a daunting task

    how to balance the ever-increasing

costs of water and energy with the

    requirements of performance, health and

safety. Now however, help is at hand in

the form of Bristans ecosmart collection

of water and energy efcient products.

    All Bristan products combine good

    design, ease-of-use and superior

    performance with responsible water and

    energy consumption. Some, as denoted

by the ecosmart icon, are exceptionally

economical and enable water and energy

efciency to be incorporated into every

    specication.

    The Bristan portfolio includes:

Thermostatic showers, taps and bathshower mixers which quickly achieve

    and maintain a consistent temperature,

helping to reduce waste of hot water

Basin taps with an Eco-Click device

which helps to reduce usage by raising

user awareness of the ow. Eco-Click

cartridges work by offering a subtle

resistance when the ow reaches its

half way point helping to save water. The

device can be over-ridden but even when

it is on full ow, an inbuilt ow regulator

still helps you to use less water

Showers and taps with reduced ow and

    a maximum temperature stop

    Push-button ow controls with varying

    time delays

    Electronic controls which operate only

when the user is within close proximity

    Showerheads with optimised spray

    patterns, adjustable spray angle and

    interchangeable spray rings

    Showerheads and handsets with

    anti-limescale features

Showers and bath shower mixers with

    eco buttons

Flow regulators for showers and shower

kits, enabling ow of as little as 4 litres

per minute (included with every shower

and blending valve) Flow regulators, aerators and spray

regulators for taps, reducing ow as low

    as 1 litre per minute

    Miniature showers saving on materials

    BREEAM compliance

Setting the standard for best practice in

    sustainable design, BREEAM demonstrates

    a buildings environmental credentials to

planners and clients. Bristans Pulse 8

automatic controls and a number of timed

ow controls (when tted with a owregulator) are eligible for BREEAM points.

Building Regulations Part G and the

    Code for Sustainable Homes

    For domestic projects, where water

    consumption must not exceed 125

litres per person per day, the Water

Calculator now requires daily usage data

for individual products. Our sales team

are on hand to help you determine the

best possible combination of products to

achieve your chosen target daily usage.

    Waterwise Marque

    Waterwise is a not-for-prot organisation

    focused on reducing water consumption

in the UK. The Waterwise Marque is

awarded to products which promote water

efciency, such as the Prism Basin Mixer

    with Eco-Click and Pop-up Waste.

    Water Efcient Product

    Labelling Scheme

The Scheme aims to help you easily

    identify water efcient products that,

when installed and used correctly, use

less water than other products available

on the market. A number of Bristan

showers and taps already comply. Moreinformation can be found at

    THERMOSTATIC

Every year, deaths and serious burns occur from scalding bath water andwater from basin taps. Unsurprisingly, it is the young, the elderly and thosewith mobility problems who are most at risk. It is now best practice to install

a TMV (Thermostatic Mixing Valve) in all cases unless a risk assessment hasestablished that it is absolutely safe not to do so.

    Thermostatic Mixing Valves, tted

anywhere that hot water is delivered,

signicantly reduce the risk of scalding.

They allow water to be stored and

    distributed at high temperatures while

reducing the outlet temperature at the

point of use. The type of valve suitable will

depend on the required, recommendedor suggested best practice for a

    particular project application. A summary

    of applications and best practice

specication is shown on page 13.

Bristan has one of the largest selections

of TMV3 approved blending valves in the

    industry, including many manufactured to

comply with the stringent requirements of

    Type 3/NHS DO8 and BS7942 standards.

As such, the range has the capability tomeet the demands of all applications and

    includes:

    Thermostatic mixing valves for use

    with washbasins, bidets, baths and

showers both single point and group

    applications

    Thermostatic shower valves both

    surface mounted and concealed,

    pre-plumbed shower panels and

    ceiling fed showers

    Bath shower mixers with thermostatic

controls for both bath and shower or for

    shower only

Basin mixer taps for general purposes

    Surgeons mixers

    Automatic thermostatic shutdown in the

event of hot or cold water supply failure

removes the risk of hot or cold water

    shock, whilst mixing valves positioned

close to the point of use virtually eliminate

deadleg and so support infection control.

Most of our products operate at both

high and low pressures and are thereforecompatible with all hot water systems.
