The watchwords at The Squid Ink Restaurant, owned andrun by husband and wife team, Warren and CatherineGoodridge are, Cornish! Local! Fresh! Sustainable!Organic! And Free Range!

Highly experienced and innovative Chef Patron Warren waslooking for a change of pace after an extensive, not to sayexhausting career, at the top of his profession. After meetingCatherine who is a degree qualified midwife, used to keepingcalm under pressure, they decided to open their own seafoodrestaurant. They re-opened The Squid Ink under their jointmanagement in 2011.

Warren is passionate about using locally sourced, ultra freshproduce and emphatically maintains that provenance is the keyto producing the very best food. Fish and seafood is sourceddaily from the small day boats that berth in Looe harbour, andThe Squid Ink’s daily specials board reflects that morning’scatch, day boats are the most sustainable form of fishing, andnothing could be fresher. Locally caught Cod, Halibut, Turbot,Skate and of course Squid are on the menu as available. Warrenfinds not knowing what is going to be in that morning’s catchwhen he is devising his menus really keeps him on his toes.

Although The Squid Ink specialises in fish and seafood; meateaters and vegetarians are equally deliciously catered for, meat issupplied from a traditional local butcher who provides a superbchoice and quality of local meat with conscience and confidence, including local lamb with that distinctive grass fed flavour, succulent milk fed pork sourced from a local dairy farm, and allbeef from local farms. Game lovers will find tender, flavoursomeRoe deer from a local estate. Poultry is all organic and freerange, and tastes the way we remember from childhood.

Warren even bakes all his own bread, to his own originalrecipes using the best English flour; currently very popular is hisblack olive and cracked pepper.

When they first saw the building they fell in love with itstraightaway. The Thatched Cottage building originates from the16th century and has served a number of purposes over the years, originally a farm, later a hotel, and more recently a restaurant. Many original features are still in evidence complemented bysympathetic additions; think oak beams, cob walls, an open fire, leaded windows and a cosy bar and you begin to get the picture.

You will be invited to relax and makeyourself at home while choosing from the extensive menu in thecosy dining room. In the summer months you may takemorning coffee, afternoon tea or even pre dinner drinks in thegarden seating area. Pimms in the summer is a cool favourite!

Colin and Chris strive to be environmentally friendly, and their focuson recycling and composting in their own garden, results in a steadysupply of tasty fruit and vegetables for use in the restaurant. Thefreshness and quality of their food is building an enviable reputation

Torquay’s oldest Italian restaurant Bianco’s has been inbusiness since 1987

Mauro who established the restaurant and his staff of 12 offera warm Mediterranean welcome to everyone who calls in theplace where comfort and enjoyment of fine Italian cuisine andwines take centre stage.

Open daily between 6pm and 11pm, Bianco’s traditionalintimate setting makes it perfect for a romantic candlelit dinnerfor two while its friendly atmosphere adds the finishing touchesto group gatherings of up to 70. For those celebrating ananniversary, birthday or similar, the upstairs floor provides theperfect private area for an event as well as extra dining spaceon especially busy nights - which occur often due to therestaurant’s popularity.

In fact, Mauro and his team have blended all the ingredientsfor success so effectively that, in Easter 2010, he opened asecond restaurant opposite - Amici, whose modern, contemporary style has quickly proved a hit with Torquay’sdiners. At the centre of it all is the food, which drawscustomers back to both restaurants again and again.

“We love what we do and we do it with love.” RestaurateursAndy and Rachel Carr truly know the way to a foodie’s heart.

It’s their passion and flair that go into serving up some of thefinest food that Cornwall has to offer that has earned TheBakehouse glowing reviews and a place in The Good FoodGuide 2012.

Recently published, inclusion in the latest edition of the UK'sbestselling restaurant guide is a coveted honour for any of thenation’s restaurants, pubs and café owners, and Andy andRachel are over the moon at their mention.

“It’s brilliant because you cannot elect or pay to be included,”beams Andy.

“Our selection is based entirely on readers' recommendationsand inspection reports.”

The couple has been running restaurants in the area for thepast 14 years and came to The Bakehouse, in Old BakehouseLane, Penzance, just over seven years ago. Since then thefunkily informal, yet intimate establishment, situated in its ownflower and palm-filled courtyard just off Penzance’s mosthistoric and beautiful street which meanders down to the oldharbour, has become a firm favourite with diners from all overtown and beyond, having been voted a Local Food Hero on fiveseparate occasions.

“We are passionate about fresh ingredients and take fulladvantage of our location by using only the finest local produceincluding fish and seafood from Newlyn, locally farmed meatsand veggies from local allotments and farms,” explains Rachel.

“We serve fantastically fresh Cornish produce, cooked simply tolet its flavour and quality shine.”

The couple are helped in their mission by a team of dedicatedstaff, including two of the waitressing team who have been withthem for 12 years.

The key ‘ingredient’ however, is chef, Gareth Spencer. “He won Student of the Year from Camborne College for two years in arow,” reveals Andy.

“He is a truly exceptional chef and we are very lucky to havehad him working with us for the last five years.”

Whether it's a special occasion or an informal get-together withfriends, all visitors to The Bake House, also a member of Tasteof the West, can be assured of the warmest of welcomes - andfabulous food.

And with Christmas on the way Andy and Rachel, who alreadyprovide delectable dinner, dessert and early bird menus, havethe most tempting of festive choices available. At £23.95 ahead, The Bakehouse’s extensive Christmas menu includesindulgent delights such as warm smoked duck breast saladwith beetroot, apple and walnuts, smoked salmon wellingtonwith herbed cream cheese, rosemary roasties and a lightlydressed salad and hazelnut and oatmeal meringue with redberries and Cornwall’s famous clotted cream. Ever flexible,Andy says just get in touch if the wide range of choices doesn’tinclude a particular Bakehouse favourite - or if special dietaryrequirements need to be accommodated.

“We believe our attention to detail is the key to our success,”he says. “Along with continuityand enjoying life!”

The Bakehouse is open from6.15pm until late every evening, except Sundays. The early bird menu isavailable Monday - Friday, or orders before 7.15pm and two courses cost £13.

The centre of Bristol is changing. Everywhere you lookthere are signs that the city is a thriving and robust 21stCentury metropolis. But look a little closer and an older, gentler Bristol is not too hard to find...

Take The Cornubia, for example. Set back from Temple Street, dwarfed by surrounding office buildings, sits this traditional onebar pub that is fast gaining a reputation as a real ale mecca.

This quaint Georgian Freehouse a grade 2 listed building, servesa vast range of Real Ales, mostly from local micro breweries. Theenthusiastic managers, Phil and Jacki, who are passionate aboutReal Ales have been running The Cornubia for the last 2 yearsand take over full ownership at the end of January.

Phil and Jacki have made a terrific improvement to the once rundown building. Their warm welcome and emphasis on friendlyservice, coupled with a deep and genuine product knowledgemakes the single bar a cosy haven from the city streets. Thebuilding retains many of its period features, a hotch potch offurniture and fixtures, fresh flowers, and real fires. The walls arecovered with newspaper clippings, horse brasses, and real alepump clips from all the ales served at The Cornubia, and thereare live turtles in a tank in the bar.

Outside on the large patio seating area, shaded from thesurrounding office buildings in the summer by the pub’scolourful umbrellas, barbeques are sometimes held. Thursdaysare Live Music nights at the Cornubia, but there is always abuzz of friendly conversation and banter whenever you drop in.

This is a pub that is all about the beer. They are members ofSIBA supporting small independent breweries, on whose beersthese interesting pubs rely. They are listed in The Good BeerGuide 2012, and have an everchanging offering of 7 different

Boisdale THE LAMB AT HINDON

The Lamb at Hindon, the rural outpost of the Boisdalerestaurant group, is an historic coaching inn nestledamong Wiltshire’s green rolling downs. It brings to thecountryside the very best of its parent group – great food, wine, whisky and cigars – while staying true to its originsand maintaining its place in the heart of the village.

With London just two hours away and Salisbury within twentyminutes, The Lamb is a perfect countryside getaway. The one-time posting inn (it supplied post horses for coaches going toand from London and the West Country) with roots dating back to the 12th Century has 19 individually furnishedbedrooms and a highly regarded dining room, bar and cigarterrace that are as friendly and welcoming to locals as they areto visitors from the city.

The inn retains many of its original features and, as important, its character. Inglenook fireplaces, flagstone floors and heavywooden beams give it handsome looks that have only beenenhanced by more recent ‘Boisdale’ touches such as the warmred walls in the bar and the tartan throws in the bedrooms.

It opens seven days a week for lunch and dinner. Bar snacksand sandwiches are available alongside à la carte dishes basedon high quality produce, that is either sourced from withinWiltshire, Somerset and Dorset or that celebrates Boisdale’sScottish connections. To complement the food are wines fromthe Boisdale collection, well-kept real ales and malt whiskiesfrom the largest malt list in the county. An extensive choice ofCuban cigars – a Boisdale obsession – can be enjoyed on theterrace equipped for all seasons.

Sample dishes include: the gourmet burger with Béarnaisesauce & black spot bacon, £8.50; and Macsween haggis, mashed potatoes and bashed neeps, £12. 21 day aged beefcuts served with Béarnaise sauce, grilled tomatoes and thickcut chips. Further options are available on the game andspecials board.

Food is served in the Dining Room and Bar. The Sitting Roomopposite the bar is ideal for drinks, perhaps at the solid oaktable that is large enough for ten or in the cosy snug with itssofa and armchairs. A private dining room is spacious enoughfor 22 for a meeting, lunch or supper.

The Lamb’s 19 bedrooms are full of character having beendecorated with antique furnishings and paintings in keepingwith Boisdale’s traditional style and classic palette. Several ofthe rooms are named after some of the world’s finest whiskies.Four of the bedrooms have four-poster-beds. All the rooms are

Many of their recipes are traditional favourites, but they arerapidly developing an original and interesting range of theirown, through trial and error. Their products are all hand made, and a large percentage of the ingredients are chopped by handwhich adds a lovely slightly irregular “homemade” texture.

Each and every jar is checked and labelled by hand; such meticulous attention to detail is more than evident in the tasteand texture of the products. They have chutneys, jams, jelliesand mustard to suit all tastes.

Although Willow Tree Farm products are available mostlythrough farm shops and delicatessens, Twinks Read is able topost small quantities in gift bags, and she is developing hernew web site to be able to sell on line.

For a really special gift, they are able to create a jam or chutneyof your own choice, creating your own label to mark the occasion.

At Image Skincare our motto is to Age Later.

But aging later is difficult to do when finding a skincare productthat works is so challenging. Consumers are greeted by a widearray of glitzy over embellished products in their departmentstore promising them everything but rarely delivering. A newbreed of Skincare is now emerging, The Cosmeceutical orClinical Skincare product. Image Skincare is currently riding thecrest of this new wave of groundbreaking ingredients andscientifically researched delivery mechanisms. Fundamentallythese products occur in the correct PH spectrum to actuallypenetrate the skin to deliver these active and meaningfulquantities of anti-oxidants, stem cells, peptides, lighteningagents and retinols.

Image has quickly become the professional’s choice, racking uphuge sales volumes in the USA; this professional only brand isnow available in the UK.

“We spend very little money on fancy PR campaigns or hugemarketing budgets, the products speak for themselves and thishas allowed us to become one of the best selling clinicalbrands in the US, we have expanded into more than 27countries worldwide and are growing at a rapid rate” – thewords of Marc Ronert the Medical Director of Image Skincareand Board Certified Plastic Surgeon.

Addressing fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage and more complexskin issues like advanced acne and pigmentation is Image’sforte. This product line goes beyond pampering to createnoticeable changes to the skin. Everyone enjoys a relaxingfacial, but this is sometimes regarded as a luxury, as the skinmomentarily feels hydrated, taught and glowing, a few hours

later there is usually nothing to show for this enjoyable, butcostly treatment. Now you can still enjoy those decadentaromas, experience the pampering but walk away with lastingskin rejuvenation. Investing in a course of resurfacingtreatments or chemical peels is also highly recommended; thiswill help to actively exfoliate away old layers of skin, bringingfresh youthful layers to the surface.

We entrust the use of our brand to Skincare Experts that havegone through in depth training in order to asses your skin andrecommend an effective homecare regime, and if required, acourse of appropriate resurfacing treatments. Choosing theright products can be compared to choosing the right foods toeat, what works for you may not work for the next person. It isimportant to have the right mix, once you have been correctlyadvised, effective skincare that delivers results then becomesextremely simple, takes up minimal time and is more affordablethan you may think.

“Having such a varied terrain and numerous scenarios, thegames’ objectives can be varied to suit all ages,” adds managing director Martin Collins.

“We usually have 20 to 30 players per game which allows themto be tactical, and fun.

“We don’t mix professional paintball players with amateurs andwe have dedicated junior games which we never mix with adultpaintball groups.”

It’s because of the care and attention to detail and safetyprovided by the 25 dedicated staff that Skirmish Exeter, aUKPSF (United Kingdom Paintball Sports Federation)accredited site which has also won Green Tourism awards, appeals to people of all ages and walks of life.

Schools to clubs, military, corporate, birthdays, stag and henevents - the venue has hosted them all - as well as a few well-known faces.

And faces don’t get more well known than Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie who were pictured in the national media recentlygoing through their paintball paces at one of the sister sites inSurrey.

If you’re not so keen on getting splattered with paint but stillrelish a bit a ‘derring do’, Skirmish Exeter has two equallyexciting alternatives.

Airsoft features the firing of small round pellets from replicaguns and Skirmish Exter, now has a range of brand new AK47s available along with a wide range of hire kit, although playersare welcome to bring their own equipment.

It’s possible to play at any time, but the site holds dedicateddays, with the last two of the year lined up for November 27and December 11.

IT shouldn’t happen to a vet - unless it’s a £2.2 million plusstate-of-the-art equine hospital.

The vets at B&W Equine might fly indeed since the hospitalopened on the four-acre site at Breadstone, Gloucestershire, atthe beginning of October, making it the only clinic to have an MRIscanner in the South West and Wales.

But despite the group now housing one of Europe’s mostadvanced equine diagnostic and surgical centres, complete withwith MRI, CT, scintigraphy, orthopaedic and colic theatres, adultand neonatal intensive care suites, laboratory and isolationfacilities and first-class intensive care facilities, the directors stresstheir continued dediction to creatures all great and small.

"Our every-day clients with their every-day horse, whether it's ageneral hack or a little fluffy Shetland pony, are still incrediblyimportant clients to us, along with all routine care, vaccinationsand dentistry,” stresses the group’s Chris Shepherd.

“Those people living in a little village with their one pony that theylove dearly, must not think that now we’ve got all these wonderfulfacilities we’re going to dismiss their business. It’s just theopposite, they’re more important to us than ever before.”

Caring - for animals and clients - remains at the heart of this four-practice group, which was formed out of the merger of BushyEquine Vets and the Willesley Equine Clinic in 2009

"Together we still have our local practices - which include Cardiff,Failand, Willesley and Breadstone - but we all benefit from a centralmodern equine facility offering unrivalled facilities," explains Chris.

That also includes an eco friendly approach. The group workedalong side Slimbridge Wildfowl & Wetlands trust to create a reedbed for water treatment and drainage.

At the group’s heart are the individual clients whose much-lovedpets receive the same care and attention no matter whetherthey’re humble ponies or high-class thoroughbreds like thosefrom commercial clients which include racing yards, studs, poloyards, show jumpers eventing yards and dressage riders.

An RCVS accredited practice, underlining its high veterinarystandards including professionalism, equipment assessment, clinical governance and health and safety, it provides clinic andreferral services, stud and reproduction and has specialists insurgery, reproduction and has specialists in surgery, orthapaedics, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine and dentistry.

There are 26 vets in total but several hold specialist certificates.Ollie Crowe is a BVSc MRCVS Cert ES(orth) DipECVS Europeanrecognised specialist in equine surgery and Richard HepburnBVSc MS(Hons) CertEM(IntMed) DipACVIM(LA) MRCSC,Diplomate of American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine anda RCVS recognised specialist in equine internal medicine.

recognised as a European specialistin stud medicine and artificialinsemination.

“We offer high quality care, withaccess to some of the best diagnosticfacilities, providing continual nursingand veterinary care for in-patients 24hours a day,” says Chris.

“With the opening of our specialist clinicwe continue to offer unparalleled careand client communication.”

My name is Alexander Peternell, I am a 4* International Event riderfrom South Africa, based in the UK for the last 10 years at my owncompetition yard with my wife Alice, who is a Grand Prix dressagerider. Our luxury competition yard, based in the South West ofEngland has 45 stables, 60 acres, 20x60 waxed floodlit outdoor and20x40 waxed indoor arenas, 2 horsewalkers, lunge pen & solarium.

My wife and I run the yard which has liveries of all levels and ourown horses from promising youngsters to top levelevent/dressage horses and breeding Stallions.

I decided to move to the UK as I believed it to be the bestopportunity to take my eventing seriously and compete againstthe World’s elite, including Olympic Gold medallists and WorldChampions at every level of competition.

Not only am I successful at producing young horses and bringinghorses through the grades. I also regularly compete at 3 and 4star level and have recently been placed at an International 3*.

I also train and compete owners’ horses and train ridersindividually and hold regular clinics.

I feel extremely privileged that we are not only in very closeproximity to one of the largest specialist equine practices in theUK, B&W Equine Group, but they also sponsor me. All of ourhorses are regularly checked and have routine physio and dentalwork and our highest level competition horses are treated as topclass athletes and are routinely checked by our vets.

I qualified for London 2012 at Barbury International 3 star with myown horse, AP Uprising who I have trained and bought on sincehe started his eventing career at Intro level. Since qualifying, Ihave been taking every opportunity to gain points and increasemy chances of representing South Africa at London 2012.

Now that I have qualified for London 2012, I need the support oflocal businesses, sponsors and owners to join me on my journey.

To own an event horse can be a thrilling experience! Even if youaren’t tempted to pick up the reins, you can still be involved in theexcitement of eventing and even be part of London 2012 bybecoming an owner

Owning an event horse at any level of eventing enables you to beinvolved with the action, attending events & training and evenusing it to arrange hospitality days for your own clients.

Event horses vary in price from around £12’000 for a goodNovice horse to around £150’000 for an Advanced horse. Thereare many different ways to become an owner. You could becomea syndicate which would mean everyone in the syndicate owns ashare and the horse is usually owned and named after thesyndicate. Alternatively, you could become an outright owner of ahorse, which means the horse would compete in your name orunder your company name and you could also advertise on thehorses competition saddle cloth, rugs etc and have yourcompany advertised by the commentator during an event. Eventsare very well attended with around 1’000 people attending a lowkey event up to 350’000 at a major 4 star like Badminton.

Alex is looking for owners and sponsors to support him on hisquest to ride at the London 2012 games. If you are interested infinding out more about what is involved with ownership orsponsorship, Alex would very much like to hear from you.

You have only to look at its concept car styling to see whythe British firm already has a bulging order book for the new babyof its range. Its appeal goes far beyond its distinctive styling.”

Land Rover UK Managing Director Colin Green welcomed therecognition: “The first production Evoque was driven off the line atLand Rover’s Halewood manufacturing plant in Liverpool only afew months ago. To receive an accolade such as this so soon, and from such a respected journal as Auto Express, is a hugeboost for the talented and dedicated professionals who haveworked so hard and so long to bring the Evoque to market.”

world’s first mass produced affordable 100% electric car. Thenominees are selected and voted on by 66 top levelautomotive journalists from around the world. The paneldescribed the car as “the gateway to a brave new electricworld.” In addition to its range, torque, speed and body, oneof the qualities of Nissan LEAF that impressed the jurors wasits performance; in their words: “Its low centre of gravityproduced sharp turn-in with almost no body roll and noundersteer. It feels just like a normal car, only quieter.” Thisaccolade is a great achievement for the LEAF, which is thefirst all electric car to win this award.

The award is vindication of Nissan’s long-term commitment tousing innovation to benefit drivers and, in particular, tochange the way people think about electric vehicles.

Nissan Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn said: “Thisaccolade recognizes Nissan LEAF, as a pioneer in zero-emission mobility, as comparable in its driving performance, quietness and superb handling to petrol powered cars; itvalidates Nissan’s clear vision and the values of sustainablemobility that we want to offer to customers.”

Although it’s hard to beat petroleum-based power in terms ofenergy provided, the Nissan Leaf still manages an average100 mile range and a top speed of 90 mph, with a 0 – 60mph time of about eight seconds, due to the electric motors207 pounds of torque, available from a standing start, prettyimpressive for a small compact car!

Wessex Garages, the well known Nissan franchise inthe Bristol area, have been appointed as an accrediteddealer for the new Nissan LEAF and are fully equippedto sell and service the new all electric vehicle.

Wessex Garages are a privately owned company tradingthroughout the Bristol area and celebrate 25 years inbusiness this year, selling and servicing both new and usedvehicles. Besides the Nissan LEAF, they represent the NissanGTR, and the Kia, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Abarth, and Hyundairanges of cars and commercial vehicles across Wales and theSouth West.

The team at Wessex are so friendly and helpful, that theirfeedback pages are full of glowing comments; theyunderstand just how daunting new car purchase can be andwill do everything they can to make the experience apleasurable one. Finding the right vehicle for you, within yourbudget, which will give you years of trouble free motoring isvery important to them, and this level of service andcommitment extends to their after sales and servicedepartments.

They place a great reliance on customer feedback; and say“It’s simple, if something’s not right, speak to a manager, immediately.”

The dealership is very excited by the prestigious World Car ofthe Year 2011 award for the Nissan LEAF. Described as the

The Leaf is powered by an 80kW, or 107 horsepower electricmotor, which draws its power from a 24kW lithium-ion batterypack that is built into the car’s chassis low down and at thecentre of gravity to greatly diminish body roll and improvehanding. Indeed all the reviews I’ve seen so far remark on theLEAF’s great handling

The LEAF’s official 100 mile range is just an estimate, ofcourse, and will be affected by driving style, temperature, andother ambient conditions. Other factors, such as using theheating and cooling for the cabin or the head lights, will havea minimal impact.

The LEAF uses regenerative breaking, which means thatduring deceleration, the electric motor is engaged to generatecurrent to charge the batteries, whilst also slowing the car.So, much of the energy used to climb a hill can be recoveredwhile going downhill.

First released in 2010 and designed from the ground up asan all electric vehicle, the styling of the Nissan LEAF is muchlike you might expect from a typical compact car, althoughmuch more modern looking. The front end is very low profilesince there’s no combustion engine, and the styling has beenvery carefully thought out, from the unique quirky touches likethe LED tail lights and bold headlights to the car’saerodynamics which conserves electricity thanks to reducingthe car’s drag.

The Nissan LEAF has adequate cabin space with fivespacious seats and features an easy to navigate dashboardwhich clearly displays the amount of battery power remaining. The coloured screen also doubles up as a top of the rangesatellite navigation system.

wessexGARAGES

The LEAF was created for short, urban journeys and shouldbe well-suited to them. The key factors that are going toattract customers in the Nissan LEAF's direction are itssuperior environmental performance and low costs. Theupfront purchase price is £28,990, which is a lot of money fora family hatchback, electric or otherwise. Being a full-blownelectric vehicle, however, the LEAF benefits from a UKgovernment incentive through which £5,000 of the purchaseprice can be claimed back. This leaves the LEAF looking likean expensive but not unaffordable alternative to conventionalcars of a similar size. For the target market of owners doingless than 80 miles a day, running a LEAF should be a breeze. It might take eight hours to charge the car fully from themains but a specialist 50kw DC quick charger can replenishthe battery up to 80% of capacity in just 30 minutes. Asthese cars catch on and the network of quick charging postsgrows, so the Leaf and other electric vehicles will look moreviable. The car's on-board computer can recommend publiccharging points in the area and will update in real time asmore come on line.

The electric car could be finally coming of age.

Precision Component Services were founded in the teethof the recession in September 2008 and are rightly proudof their success.

After 20 years experience at all levels in precision turnedcomponents, Shane Norris decided to take the plunge and starthis own company. Straight after he had used all his ownresources to start the company, and buy the very best machines, the recession hit. Shane is not a man to accept defeat, he rolledup his sleeves and worked as a one man operation for two years, often until late; he utilised all his contacts, most of whom werehappy to lend a hand, called in favours and turned nothing away, large or small. Working alone enabled him to keep his costs downand prices competitive, and with the support of his fiancée Karen,a successful business started to emerge.

Precision specialise in the manufacture of Precision Componentsin any material from Stainless Steel to Plastic and canmanufacture any batch size from 1 to 100,000 on Citizen slidinghead machines, Doosan Puma 2000SY, fixed head CNC and fullCNC milling. They particularly specialise in volume parts, theirmulti axis machines being able to turnout parts in one operation.

The machines run 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week, operatingon the principle of “lights out machining,” running unattendedovernight thus reducing labour costs and using cheaper nighttime electricity. Shane is proud to be able to turn out top qualitycomponents, cheaper in some cases, than the Chinese.

Over the last 2 years the business has really started to grow andShane called in Mark Fletcher, an experienced production managerwho brought his own expertise and contacts to swell the orderbooks. Shane is grateful for Mark’s contribution to the companyand says that, “he gives me someone to bounce ideas off.” Shanehas also been able to take on a full time employee, and anapprentice through the government’s apprenticeships scheme.

“Membership of the Contract Flooring Association gives ourcompany additional kudos and the Contract Flooring Journal isa good indicator of where the market is going and which newproducts and techniques are becoming available,” explainsNathan. “As much of our work is with corporate clients andlocal authorities, strong environmental credentials are importantso where possible we look to work with suppliers thatmanufacture products within the UK. It’s a great way to cutdown on lead times – and our carbon footprint – and we lookto reduce waste at every stage of the process.”

The company’s success depends very much on theiremployees, but as Nathan explained “It was becoming difficultto recruit people with enough experience in the industry so weset up an apprentice scheme through which we take youngschool leavers and train them up.”

A Bristol company N & S Flooring Ltd have come throughthe recession in a strong position; sticking to a proactivebusiness plan, and targeting carefully selected clientshas carried them through, achieving steady growth of 3% a year.

Director Nathan Sims, who has been with N & S Flooring foralmost a decade, is very proud of the team’s achievement, turnover today is approximately £2m, 75% more than in 2001 when Nathan joined N & S Flooring. Extensivediversification from the company’s mainstay of domestic workof 10 years ago led to many large corporate clients joining theircustomer portfolio.

The company prefers to deal with a wide variety of customers. They are not reliant on any one market although they do dealextensively in the education and health care sectors. Majorclients also include Avon and Somerset Constabulary, Avon FireBrigade, Bristol City Council, the University of the West ofEngland, South Gloucester Council and United BristolHealthcare Trust.

Because of the volume of work in the education sector, all N &S Flooring employees are CRB checked – as well as being NVQand CSCS qualified and health and safety certified. The team

The company was established in 1967 and Mike Newman isstill the managing director today. In addition to Nathan, theteam comprises finance director Claire Glayzer, contractsmanager Toni Palmer and 15 full time floor layers who arejoined by up to 12 sub-contractors.

It is estimated that £1.3 billion was paid in unnecessary inheritance tax in 2011.

Sorting out personal and financial planning is one task thatshould be high on everyone’s agenda yet so few of us actuallytake the time to take the necessary steps to protect our longer-term financial interests. So, what are the main issues that youneed to consider?

Your Will Did you know that without a will, not even a surviving spouse isalways guaranteed to inherit everything and that a co-habitingpartner has no automatic right to share in a deceased partner’sestate? With the rise in property values and extended familyscenarios it is not surprising that disputes over wills and estateshave increased dramatically in recent years. What is more, thefamilies of those who fail to plan ahead may even face anunnecessary Inheritance Tax bill.

Powers of Attorney Regardless of age, it really is essential to have an enduring orlasting power of attorney in place to ensure that your propertyand financial affairs will not be frozen in the event of an unexpected loss of mental capacity through accident or illness.

Cost of Care Anyone in England with capital in excess of £23,250 (or £22,000in Wales), will generally need to fund their own care (unless theirneed is primarily for health rather than social care in which casethey may be eligible for NHS funding). It is estimated that the carehome fees faced by many people could be as much as £65,000.If you want to take steps to protect your assets from being eatenup in paying for care it is important that you have the benefit ofunbiased information and advice from a regulated professionalabout the potential risks and benefits.

Choice of Advisor Despite the economic climate and the increasing proliferation ofsupermarket style legal products, you still need balanced andwell-informed advice that enables you to make the right choices.Trusted advisors should work closely with you to ensure yourpersonal planning fits your needs and circumstances rather than
