Britain is at War with Germany
Friday 19th January 1917…
Bill and Harry are fighting for King and Country at The Front.
We follow the fortunes of the Snellgrove family caught up in the
drama of Silvertown.
This includes Alfred and his sister Winnie, who writes letters…
12 Year old Winnie Snellgrove writes to seek answers…
Dear Generals,
Where is the victoryFor those who have died? It’s hollow, dear Generals,You destroy lives.
Winnie Snellgrove, aged 12
This provokes A LOT of gossip!
In Silvertown, Canning Town, East London
there is a TNT explosives factory belonging to Brunner-Mond & Co. The factory carries out
the purification of TNT, an inherently dangerous activity about which little is known.
On 19th January 1917 there was a fire at the factory, which led to a huge explosion. 73 people were
killed, hundreds injured and there was damage to properties for miles
around. The fire burned for days.
Will Silvertown survive the explosion?
Will the Snellgrove family escape unscathed?
Will anyone answer Winnie’s letters?
Will YOU be there to find out?!
