When Robert Baden Powell was 19, he went into the British

The Boers were people from Holland. They didn't like the

British taking their land in Africa. (There were diamond

mines* therel) 5o they started a war against Britain.

One of Baden Powell's jobs in South Africa was to work

with black African scouts. He taught them to understand

tracks in the grass, and other things. In 1899 he wrote a

book about scouting for them.

In 1900 the Boers attacked the town of Mafeking. Baden

Powell defended the town against them. He had only 1,251

men and the Boers had 9,000. But Baden Powell defended

Mafeking for 271 days until help arrived.

When Baden Powell went back to Britain, he was surprised.

Lots of English boys liked his book on scoutingl He wrote a
