    Week of March 7, 2011

The Williams School works with each child to build and enduring

foundation for academic, moral and social success. A Williams School

student embodies integrity, confidence and a love of learning.

    Dear Williams School Families,

It was quite a busy week, no let down into a Williams School vacation. We had our final basketball games of

the season and all of the middle school teams played well in their tournaments. What impresses me about all of

our teams is not the final score of any game or good sportsmanship (although very important!), but its the drivewith which our students play the game. Honestly, no matter the score of the game or how many we are possibly

down with a minute left to play, the intensity of the play never waivers. I appreciate that spirit because it is an

illustration of a wonderful characteristic that all of us need as we grow- tenacity.

I had the opportunity to informally observe many classes this week. I love seeing the active engagement acrossall grades and subject areas. Its interesting to see it from my perspective. I see a flow of challenge andopportunities for growth across the entire spectrum of classes we serve every day. The ages are different and

the teaching techniques are so appropriate for the each child, but the teachable moments are all there no matterwhat the class. When I go into a classroom to observe, I am looking at the student engagement first and

foremost. No matter what the teacher is doing, if the students are actively engaged in the tasks at hand, it is aclear measure of teaching effectiveness. This week, I left all of my impromptu observations with a spring in my

step after seeing real, honest, active engagement everywhere I went.

For the Wednesday school assembly I had a picture of a clock whose hands were moving and every once in awhile a spring would pop out of the watch. I asked our school if anyone knew why I had chosen this little

illustration for the weeks theme. Broken clock, was the overall answer from the majority of the students. .The picture I used as the theme was actually springtime.

Of course, I hope your clocks remain in the background for our week vacation and the focus remains squarely

focused on having a relaxing and fun time. Dont forget to set your own clocks ahead on March 13th

as this isthe date of daylight savings time.

Wouldnt want to be late to school when we come back! Take care and be safe.

    Best,

    Jay
