BROADWATER SCHOOL

Dear Parents and Guardians

It seems to have been a very long term and I am sure that we are all ready for a well-

deserved break. Our students have been involved in so much this term and have

had so many successes and I am sure this makes you as proud as I am of all of their

efforts.

On Thursday of this week at 7.00pm we have our Christmas celebration that once

again we will be holding at St. John’s Church in Farncombe. I do hope that as many

of you as possible will be able to attend.

I said in the last newsletter that we were undertaking a review of the current

timetable which has now been done and staff have decided that we will retain the

current model for the remainder of the year. However, we will be planning for the

curriculum and timetable for next September and discussing with staff and students

whether we maintain the current 50 minute lessons or return to the 60 minute

lessons as we had last year. Obviously there are pros and cons with each but which

helps students learn in the best way will be the deciding factor. If you do have any

views or comments please email me.

We shall be saying farewell to Miss Stephanie Thompson, Leader of Achievement of

Phoenix House who is moving to a school in London. Miss Thompson joined

Broadwater School in September 2009 and will be fondly remembered by students

in Phoenix House and those she taught history to. We will be welcoming Mr Wait in

January as the new Leader of Achievement of Phoenix; Mr Wait met the students

last week in assembly.

I would like to wish you all the very best for Christmas and I am looking forward to

2015 and the new opportunities that will bring for all of our students.

Merry Christmas

Broadwater School Awards Evening – 6th November 2014

On Thursday 6th November Broadwater School welcomed back the class of 2014 to

present them with their GCSE certificates, prizes and trophies. Chris Lee

commented that “It was a wonderful evening with a great atmosphere. It was so

good to learn how the students were getting on in their new college courses.”

Our guest speaker was Ms Linnea Cheung, former Broadwater student and now a

specialist registrar in Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery at Wexham Park Hospital. Linnea

spoke to the students about the importance of having a goal to aim for and when

opportunities arose to really go for them and not to be afraid to take a few risks.

She stressed that if you really want something, then the self-motivation will be

strong enough to help you achieve your dream. We particularly liked her comment

that it was important to be nice and polite to people, because they would then be

more willing to help. Linnea has found as a doctor that people will be more inclined

to give greater detail about their condition or situation if a friendly approach is

adopted. She finished by saying that the students should be proud of their

achievements and proud of themselves.

All students received their GCSE certificates. This was a successful year for

Broadwater with an increase in the number of English results, especially the number

of A* and A grade passes more than double the national average. One of the key

prizes, Outstanding Academic Achievement went to Kieran Nash who gained a

scholarship to Charterhouse School. The prize for Outstanding Academic Progress

went to Adil Ahmed who had made significant progress in his time at the school in

overcoming many challenges that he faced. The special Diamond Jubilee Queen

Elizabeth II Award went to a Kyarah Betker who faced significant medical problems

in her final years including spending time in hospital. In spite of these difficulties she

always remained resilient and smiling throughout.

The formal part of the evening finished with a photo montage set to music with

images of the students from Year 7 through to photos of them in their final days of

school when they attended the School Prom – a boat trip on the River Thames

through the heart of London.

We wish them all the very best for the future.

INTO Film Festival

As part of the Into Film Festival, 14 students were

invited to the Odeon Cinema in Guildford to see a

screening of ‘Divergent’. The film is adapted from the

popular book series by Veronica Roth. We went by

minibus to the cinema where we met students from

many other schools.

I had read the book and was excited to see it as a film.

The film was a good representation of the book.

However the book sometimes described certain things

better and vice versa. I really enjoyed going on this trip

and I hope to do something like it again sometime.

Warner Brothers Studio Tour

On October 21st, a group of students were lucky enough to visit the Warner Bros. Studios in Watford, for the Making of Harry Potter Tour. The tour showcases iconic props, costumes and sets and our students had a wonderful experience – they are pictured above with a ‘Death Eater’!

Phoenix House NEWS

It is with great sadness that I write my last contribution on behalf of Phoenix House for Broadwater News. I am moving on to a different role in a new school and, while I look forward to new challenges in the future, I will miss all the students, parents and staff who have made my time here so much fun. One of the best things about this privileged position as leader of Phoenix House is being able to reward students for their wonderful attitudes and hard work. Students of the Week this term have included Ben Hodgson, Harry Cook, Jack Godfrey, James Lambert, Leah Rowley, Matti

Fletcher, and Will Akehurst. All had shown themselves to be helpful, hardworking and committed to their own studies and to the school as a whole. Ben Hodgson was actually recognised again this term as he was awarded Year 11 Star of the Week. He was nominated by two of his teachers who both commented on his positive attitude and the fact that he has worked so hard and dramatically improved his grades. I have some wonderful memories such as the day we spent on the Titanic during Challenge Week 2012, the various sports days where - in spite of valiant efforts - we are yet to win, and the Prom boat trips we run each year but the best memory will be having the opportunity to spend my days with the students. I know that you will all want to join me in welcoming my successor. Russell Wait will be taking over as Leader of Achievement for Phoenix House as well as teaching history. He is looking forward to getting to know you all in January and I am sure that he is going to enjoy it as much as I have over the last six years. I’d like to finish by thanking some people. First of all, thank you to all of the Phoenix tutors for their hard work and support. I really couldn’t have done this job without them. I’d also like to thank all of you parents and carers for being so supportive of the school and the students. Finally, I’d like to thank the students themselves for making this the best job to have in the school. Stephanie Thompson Leader of Achievement: Phoenix House

NEWS

After a very busy first term we are all looking forward to a nice break over the Christmas holidays. We are both very proud of the achievements and efforts of the students in both Aquila and Pegasus since the start of the new school year. All students have made a great effort to improve their overall attendance and achievement. The year 11’s worked tirelessly for their Mock Exams in November and are now continuing to work hard to improve their grades for the March Mock Exams. And although it seems like a lifetime away now, when our new year 7’s joined us in September they worked their hardest and have had a great first term settling in to school life at Broadwater School. We have spoken about our students’ achievements but none of this would have been possible without the full support and encouragement that they receive from their tutors, support tutors and associated members of staff. We really are very lucky to have such a dedicated team supporting us, the students and Aquila and Pegasus houses. A very big ‘thank you’ to them all and we wish them a Merry Christmas and a deserved break. Finally, although we have had a very positive Autumn term it has been tinged with sadness as at the end of this term we say goodbye to Stephanie Thompson the head of Phoenix house. We wish her all the best for her future and will be sad to see her go. However, we look forward to welcoming her replacement Russell Wait who will be taking over Phoenix house in the new year. We would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you all in 2015! Miss L Regan Mrs S Looseley Aquila House Pegasus House

Student Achievements

Tyler Radlett Year 8 Tyler was selected for a place at the World Youth Darts Qualifying Championships in October and had to travel to Hull in order to take part. He has been playing darts for a number of years and has even secured sponsorship. We are very proud of everything that Tyler has achieved and look forward to more success in the near future. Nathan Staniford Year 11 It was with great pleasure that both I and Rachel Jones were able to accompany Nathan at an Awards Celebration Evening at McClaren Woking this term. He has been engaged with the GASP Motor Project, which is run in schools across Surrey, and was selected as an Award winner – his citation read :

“One of the first courses we ran was with students from Broadwater School and that was where we met Nathan Staniford, one of our star students. Nathan already had a keen interest in mechanics, and through the school had enrolled on a daytime mechanics course at MIT Skills. He had his own overalls and boots – usually we have to supply them – and was really proud to wear them. It was apparent from the start that not only did Nathan have a talent for mechanics, but that he was interested, engaged, enthusiastic and happy to share his knowledge with others. His skills developed rapidly, and he was happy working on any piece of kit we brought along. He even offered to mend one of the teachers’ lawnmowers …. which just happened to be

in the room we were working in! His keen sense of humour and enthusiasm rubbed off on his fellow attendees and as a result we were able to run a brilliant course. For Nathan Staniford, the Award of Most Enthusiasm to Learn is presented by Mr David Munro, Chairman of Surrey County Council.” Clearly, we are all very proud of Nathan and the great work that he has achieved and hope that he will continue his enthusiasm for mechanics and secure an apprenticeship for when he leaves Broadwater. Well done Nathan. Mrs S Looseley, Leader of Achievement Pegasus

Broadwater Cricket Association Report

This term the BCA has accomplished many things and has big plans for the future.

On Thursday 6th November, 9 students and Mrs Fowler went to the Chance to Shine

annual awards 2014 at the Kia Oval. We went there without having any idea that we

would win the Satellite Club of the Year Award. Along with the trophy, we received

£300 towards the business.

We have also had a successful assembly where awards were handed out to students

in and outside of the BCA. Every Tuesday we have had a professional cricketer with

some nets up. We have also planned some upcoming events, such as Inter-form

cricket. Overall this has been a great term and we hope to carry it on into next year.

PE NEWS This has been another busy half term for sport. We have had Interhouse netball, basketball, benchball and dodgeball for all year groups, plus the Year 7, 8 and 9 Interhouse indoor sports hall athletics competitions. Well done to Aquila who won the Year 8 competition and Year 7 Athletics and Phoenix who won the Year 9 competition. In particular, congratulations to the following pupils who broke school records:- Poppy Campbell – Standing long jump – 2.04 m Charlie Le Mesurier – Speed bounce – 68 Rosie Savage – Vertical jump – 42 Hannah Froom – Vertical jump – 43 Aidan Palmer – Standing long jump – 2.45m Maisie Singh – Standing long jump – 2.25m After Christmas we are taking part in the Indoor Sportshall Athletics Competition, so this term Sue Goode from Guildford Athletics Club has been coming in on a Tuesday after school to coach Year 7 students. Hopefully this will help us to be prepared for the competition. At the minute Aquila are in the lead with 1105 points, followed by Pegasus on 985 and then Phoenix with 955 points. It looks like it’s going to be a close contest again this year. The more students who get involved the more points for your house, so make sure you come along to Interhouse competitions in the New Year. In particular, get involved in the Swim Gala at the end of January. On Thursday 11th December, five Broadwater students attended the Surrey Schools Young Ambassadors Leadership Conference. They learnt some new ideas for leadership work and improved their leadership skills. They also trained for their Junior umpire award in Table Tennis and passed. Therefore, they are now qualified to umpire a table tennis match. Well done to :- Lai Yang Tang, David Voller, Rachel Tidey, Jack Fuller and Zoya Timonova.

On Thursday 13th November several pupils took part in the Cross Country Trials at Charterhouse. The top 6 runners go on to represent Waverley. Our pupils did very well. In particular, Issy Davis who came 3rd and Jacob Davis who came 6th. Both students will go on to represent Waverley in January. Well done to all who took part.

On Monday 24th November and Monday 1st December we took part in the girls’ cricket indoor tournament which was held at Broadwater. Well done to all those who played.

Also during this term Broadwater hosted the Years 10 & 11 Badminton tournament. Well done to the students who played. On Wednesday 26th November Broadwater hosted the Years 5 and 6 Badminton Festival. Loseley Fields, Tillingbourne and Chandler junior schools attended. In total approximately 50 pupils took part and had a great time working on their badminton skills. Yet again around 25 Young Leaders helped to run the event. They did a fantastic job in organising the younger pupils and keeping score. All pupils received certificates for taking part and the winning team from Chandler gained medals.

Well done to the Year 9 Netball team who came 4th in their district netball tournament. 10 teams attended and the teams placed above them were George Abbott, Guildford County and Howard of Effingham - an excellent achievement. Well done! Two weeks ago, Ben Barnett, the cricket committee managing director led a whole school assembly which was an amazing achievement in itself. The cricket committee created a Powerpoint presentation which advertised cricket in school and showed the success of the committee so far. During the assembly several pupils received £5.00 cinema vouchers for their hard work, commitment or progress / ability in cricket. The committee recently won Satellite Club of the Year at the Chance to Shine Cricket Awards. They attended a presentation ceremony at the Kia Oval to receive their award. The host for the awards was BBC commentator Alison Mitchell; special guests included England and Yorkshire batsman Jonny Bairstow, England Women’s cricketer Tammy Beaumont and former England bowler Devon Malcolm.

This half term we have had a professional cricket coach coming into school every Tuesday lunchtime. It is a session open to all students, girls and boys, and we hope this will be continuing in the New Year. Mrs K Fowler PE Department
