Our school is a leader in English language tuition and

testing and many successful writers have taught at the

school. Anglo-Continental has offered English language

courses for over 60 years to 400,000 students from

120 different countries.

Anglo-Continental’s campus, within easy walking

distance of Bournemouth’s town centre, is one of the

largest in the UK and offers excellent modern facilities

for studying English, including a multi-media learning

centre, language laboratory, private study rooms, a

spacious lecture theatre and free internet access.

Our popular self-service restaurant offers a wide range

of refreshments and opens out onto a sun terrace

leading to our award-winning gardens. Social and

themed events and leisure activities are regularly held

Bournemouth, in addition to being a popular

destination for students to learn English, is one of the

most fashionable seaside resorts on the South Coast of

England. It is less than two hours from London and

offers excellent travel connections by air, rail and road.

This university town is ideally located, with 12

kilometres of sandy, Blue Flag award-winning beaches,

sparkling sea and scenic coastal views. The vibrant

town centre has a wide range of shops, restaurants,

cafés, bars, cinemas and theatres, as well as beautiful

parks and gardens, mini golf, an aquarium and even a

giant air balloon! Bournemouth also offers an extensive

range of sporting and leisure activities, including

Europe’s first artificial surf reef.

There is a variety of local attractions, including the

stunning World Heritage Jurassic coastline, Poole

Harbour - one of the largest natural harbours in the

world, and the beautiful New Forest National Park, a

historical Royal hunting ground. Other places of

interest include the ancient site of Stonehenge, the

cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury, the Isle of

Wight, the Isle of Purbeck and the 2012 Olympics

Sailing Venue of Weymouth and Portland. The Roman

City of Bath and the University City of Oxford are also

Our TeachersThe majority of our year-round teachers are diplomaqualified* and highly experienced in a variety ofareas. It is a minimum requirement that teachers haveeither the Cambridge ESOL CELTA or Trinity CollegeTESOL Certificate. Teachers are also expected to havea degree level qualification.

Within our long-term team, a number of teachers haveMAs in TEFL, others have qualified teacher status (QTS)and some have specialist subject qualifications. Asubstantial number of our teachers have specialresponsibilities according to their own interests andareas of expertise.

CertificatesOn satisfactory completion of the course students willreceive the Anglo-Continental Certificate of Studies.Certificates will also be awarded for internationallyrecognised examinations students have passed duringtheir stay. On successful completion of the AcademicStudy Programme, the Anglo-Continental Diploma inEnglish is also awarded at the appropriate level.

Our Intensive courses have established the firm foundation on which all our teaching is based. Theyoffer a choice of programmes for everyone who needs an improved level of English for academic,social or professional reasons.

Your choice of coursesWhen you enrol you can select the number of lessons per week which suits you best, and the courseduration which meets your needs. You can be sure that if you are a complete beginner or if youalready have a good command of the language, there will be a class suitable for you.

Your classYou will study in a lively international atmosphere with others whose levels of English are similar toyour own. You will be taught by a team of two or three teachers, who encourage participation andinteraction between members of the group - and English is the only language you will use!

Your lessonsYour lessons will be stimulating and effective, with a variety of activities to develop your confidence,knowledge and skills:• lively presentation and practice of new language• rapid development of oral fluency, accuracy and conversation skills• systematic development of listening, reading and writing skills• extension of vocabulary, structure and usage

If you follow a course of 25 or 30 lessons per week, you will have theadditional benefit of language extension and supplementary skills.

Outside your scheduled timetable, you will be able to use the multi-medialearning centre, with computers, internet access, TV, DVD, languagelaboratory, reference library and private study facilities. Everything you needfor enjoyable and successful study.

Course profileThe Academic Study Programme provides structured and flexible long-term courses for all who needhigh standards of English to achieve their career objectives. It is particularly important if you needinternationally recognised qualifications in the language for employment or entry to higher education.

Your programme, lasting up to one year and leading to the Anglo-Continental Diploma in English,allows you to progress at an appropriate rate through the various language levels to UpperIntermediate or Advanced.

Special study optionsYour language knowledge and skills are systematically assessed and developed within an intensivegeneral English course, supplemented by interesting special study options in areas such asacademic study preparation, reading and writing skills, English for business and professionalsubjects and English in the context of British life and culture.

Examination optionsThis programme allows you to take advantage of our Intensive IELTS and FCE Preparation Courses.You may also wish to combine your Intensive Course with one or more of our comprehensive range ofoptions which include preparation for a number of internationally recognised examinations such as:• the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)• the University of Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)• the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)• the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC)

Anglo-Continental is an Examination Centre for:

- TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language

- TOEIC - Test of English for International Communication

- TKT - Teaching Knowledge Test

- ILEC - International Legal English Certificate

- ICFE - International Certificate in Financial EnglishProspective examination candidates should apply in person at the school. Ifyou will not be at the school before the closing date for entry, please requestan official examination entry form as early as possible. Some of theexaminations are subject to a minimum number of candidates.

Additional entry dates may be available for examinations held at othercentres.

At Anglo-Continental we have a long history of success in preparing our students for English languageexaminations which are widely accepted in academic and commercial circles throughout the world.We provide courses in preparation for highly regarded examinations such as the International EnglishLanguage Testing System (IELTS) and the University of Cambridge First Certificate (FCE).

Courses are designed to develop the necessary skills relevant to the particular examination and topresent and practise language appropriate to the students’ needs. Timed practice tests provide anidea of what it is like to work under pressure during a real examination.

Our comprehensive course is intended for thosewho wish to benefit from intensive preparation for the IELTS test, which includes listening, speaking,reading and writing components. This full-time course provides 30 lessons per week, allowingparticipants the opportunity to maximise their development in each of the four language skills.

Intensive FCE Preparation CourseThe First Certificate in English, an established University of Cambridge ESOL examination, is forpeople who need to use everyday spoken and written English for work and study purposes. Our 30lesson per week course focuses on all five parts of the exam, covering techniques on how toapproach typical tasks with special guidance on writing.

Intensive Courses with Examination PracticeThese courses aim to raise your level of general English by providing 25lessons per week of intensive English language study, combined with 5 lessonsper week of practice for the examination of your choice: IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC,or CAE. Teachers will familiarise students with the format of the examinationand introduce strategies for dealing with typical questions.

20 lessons per week (Course T-1.20) of language teaching methodology and personal languagedevelopment. In this course, participants will explore and experience lively and creative teachingstrategies and ideas designed to refresh their teaching and to develop and extend their ownlanguage proficiency.

The enrolled student intends and is able tofollow and complete the course of study atAnglo-Continental and declares that he/she shallabide by all current UK laws and leave theUnited Kingdom at the end of his/her studies.

Anglo-Continental reserves the right to withholdconfirmation of an enrolment, at its discretion, ifsuch action is deemed necessary in the interestsof the student or the school.

FeesThe fees for courses and accommodation arevalid from 1 January to 31 December eachyear. The fees for the following year arenormally published in July/August.

The fees must be received in full byAnglo-Continental not later than two weeksbefore course commencement. Course fees arecalculated in complete weeks, and any part of a week is counted as a full week.

No compensation, fee reductions, refunds,credit, additional lessons or extension of thecourse can be given for:

- services or facilities included in the fees andnot used;

- late entry to or absence or early departurefrom a course without formal curtailment;

- lessons replaced by testing, class allocationprocedures or the sightseeing tour on courseentry dates;

- days when schools are closed because ofofficial holidays.

Any refunds which are approved can only bemade by the office or Representative to whom

the fees were originally paid. Anglo-Continentalreserves the right to make fee adjustments as aresult of changes in exchange rates or statutorytaxes without prior notice.

School regulationsAnglo-Continental publishes regulations toensure that the courses operate smoothly.Acceptance of and compliance with theseregulations, and with English law, are contractualobligations on the part of the student.

Whenever Anglo-Continental accepts the enrolmentof a student below the minimum age specifiedfor the course or below the age of 16 years, theperson enrolling the student accepts responsibilityfor his or her conduct, security and well-being.

Cancellation or postponement of a course

An enrolment is not transferable but may becancelled or postponed without incurringcharges, provided that written notice is receivedby Anglo-Continental not less than two weeksbefore the scheduled date of coursecommencement. In the absence of such notice, or if less than two weeks’ notice is received:

- in the case of cancellation, a fee of £ 500 ispayable in lieu of notice;

- in the case of postponement, Anglo-Continentalreserves the right to levy a charge to coveradministration and accommodation costsincurred on the student's behalf;

- should the application for a visa be refused,we will refund any published fees paid inadvance (after deduction of an administrationcharge of £ 50) provided that you send us acopy of the letter of refusal from the BritishEmbassy before the intended start date of thecourse.

Any additional charges for services provided bya third party (such as UK Border Agency fees,hotel accommodation, flat rental and courierservices) are not refundable.

Curtailment of a course(Excluding courses with reduced fees)

If a course of more than eight weeks' duration iscurtailed by the student, four weeks' notice mustbe given to the school. If no notice or insufficientnotice is given, course fees must be paid in lieuof notice together with any accommodationcharges due. In all cases, course fees must bepaid for a minimum of eight weeks.

If a course of eight weeks' duration or less iscurtailed, no refund of course fees can be given.Students must have personal insurance againstinability to attend or continue a course formedical or compassionate reasons (see ‘liabilityand insurance’).

Change of course(Excluding courses with reduced fees)

If after commencement of a course, the studentwishes to change to a course of a lower

specification, two weeks' notice must be givento the school. If approved, the change must bemade on a scheduled entry date for the newcourse.

Any refund due will be in the form of a credittowards any required extension of the amendedcourse or towards any subsequent course withAnglo-Continental during the twelve monthsfollowing the end of the amended course. Thecredit is not transferable to any other person,and no cash refund can be given.

English language level

Any information about your level received priorto your arrival will act as a guide only. YourEnglish language level will be determined byour entry test on your first day. If you are not atthe required level for your course, you will betransferred to a suitable alternative course.

Accommodation

The fee for the first week in homestayaccommodation includes a non-refundableadministration charge to cover the cost ofselection, reservation and administration.

Any request to change or leave accommodation,either separately or in conjunction with thecurtailment of a course, must be made toAnglo-Continental at least two weeks before thedate of the proposed move and approvedbefore the change is made. Failing this,accommodation fees are payable in lieu of notice.Accommodation fees continue to be payable forany periods of absence during the course.

Photographs and film

During our courses, we sometimes takephotographs and film footage, some of whichmay be incorporated into future publicitymaterial. If you do not wish to appear in anypromotional publications, please advise us inwriting before the start of your course.

Liability and insuranceAnglo-Continental, its Representatives and staffwill not be liable for any loss, damage, illnessor injury to persons or property howevercaused, except where such liability is imposedby statute. It is the student’s responsibility to

take out personal insurance against all suchrisks, including inability to attend or continue acourse and for the payment of medicalexpenses.

Force majeureIt shall be a fundamental condition of thecontract between the student andAnglo-Continental or its Representatives thatneither Anglo-Continental nor its Representativesshall be in any way liable to the student in theevent of any service contracted to be suppliedby them becoming impossible to supply byreason of industrial dispute or other causeoutside their control.

Data protectionTo ensure that your course at Anglo-Continentalmeets your requirements we and, if appropriate,the Anglo-Continental Representative in yourown country will need to use the informationyou provide (such as your personal data anddetails of any special requirements) in order toprocess your enrolment.

We must pass your information on to thoseinvolved in providing you with services relatingto your stay at Anglo-Continental such as, butnot limited to, your reservation ofaccommodation and transfer services. Theinformation may also be provided, if required,to security or credit-checking organisations,customs and the UK Border Agency as requiredby UK law.

Please note that where your information is heldby an Anglo-Continental Representative, it willbe subject to your Representative’s own dataprotection policy and their country’s national law.

Validity of conditions

These Conditions of enrolment and Additionalconditions for long-term courses are valid from 1 January 2012 and are subject to English law.The English language version is legally bindingin all cases.

Anglo-Continental reserves the right to waive oradjust the specifications of a course, which mayinclude age limits, without prior notification.

Curtailment of a course If a long-term course is curtailed after itscommencement, no refund of course fees can begiven. Change of courseAn enrolment for a long-term course may not bechanged after course commencement exceptwhere the student wishes to prolong or include acourse of a higher specification with the approvalof the school.

School holidaysStudents following long-term courses may apply totake holidays, in complete weeks from Monday toFriday, at times convenient to the programme andwith the approval of the Director of Studies.Holidays are allowed on the basis of a maximum

of two weeks per twelve weeks of theprogramme, and application must be made to theschool not less than two weeks in advance. Ineach case the total course duration will beextended to compensate for the number of weeks’holiday taken. Holidays may not be taken whenfollowing intensive IELTS or FCE preparation,Examination Practice or Business and Specialisedoptions.

Your arrival

Before you travel to England, we will sendyou a letter of confirmation of enrolment andour ‘Information Guide for Adults’ which willgive you all the information you need aboutyour stay with Anglo-Continental.

Student care

When you are away from home, problemscan arise. Most of these are easily solvedwith the help of our Student Services staff. In more complicated situations, or in caseswhere medical assistance is required, ourwelfare counsellors are entirely at yourdisposal, offering you a professional andcompletely confidential service.

From your first contact with us to your lastday at Anglo-Continental, we will give you all the help you need.

Student travel insurance

For your protection and peace of mind youshould have comprehensive travel insurancewhich should include any possible cancellationor curtailment charges. Such insurance may beobtained through your own travel adviser. Ifhowever, you would like further advice, pleasecontact us.

Medical treatment

Where appropriate, Anglo-Continental canassist with the arrangement of emergencymedical and dental treatment as provided by the British National Health Service.

Lesson duration

All lessons are of 45 minutes duration.

School and national holidays

Anglo-Continental schools are closed:

24 December 2011 to2 January 2012 for 1 week

22 December 2012 to6 January 2013 for 2 weeks

Anglo-Continental schools are also closed onofficial national holidays declared by the BritishGovernment. Those scheduled for 2012 are:6 April, 9 April, 7 May, 4 June, 5 June and 27 August.

If your entry date coincides with an officialholiday, your accommodation will still bereserved for you from the Sunday before yourcourse commences, and we would advise you to plan to arrive on that day. Your course willbegin with the entry test on the next workingday following the holiday.

No compensation, fee reductions, refunds,credit, additional lessons or extension of thecourse can be given for days when the school is closed because of official holidays.

Accommodation during school holidays

If you are attending a course which continuesafter the school holiday 22 December 2012 to 6 January 2013, full board standard homestayaccommodation will be provided during theholiday, at a cost of £ 155 per week. This willbe automatically reserved and invoiced. If youdo not require this accommodation you mustinform us at least 4 weeks before the holidayperiod and we will arrange a full refund.

Our confirmation

When your ‘Enrolment form’ is received andaccepted by the school the following documentswill be sent to you:

- An invoice for the full amount of the fees due

- Your accommodation address (due to thecareful procedure involved in selecting youraccommodation, the address may be sent toyou at a later date)

- Our ‘Information Guide for Adults’

If you require a visa we can only send you thesedocuments after we have received your depositof £ 500 (deductible when you pay your fees)or the full amount of the fees due.

Entry to England

When you pass through UK Border Control onarrival in England you will be required to showyour:

- Passport or identity card

- Visa (if required)

- Confirmation of enrolment from Anglo-Continental

- Copy of the bank’s transfer confirmation, orother evidence that you have paid your fees toAnglo-Continental or its Representative.

UK visa requirements

If you are unsure whether you will need a visato study in the UK you can find useful up-to-dateinformation about visas on the UK BorderAgency website at:www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk. You may alsowish to consult your nearest British Embassy orConsulate.

If you require a visa in order to study in the UK,we strongly recommend that you apply as earlyas possible for your course as the applicationprocedure may take several weeks to complete.Anglo-Continental must be in receipt of adeposit of £ 500 (deductible when you payyour fees) or the full amount of the fees duebefore issuing a visa letter or Certificate ofAcceptance to Study (CAS).
