DEUTERONR

As the DEUTERON and PERGOPAK matting agents are duro-

plastic polymers, this opens up useful properties for users. For

example, their high hardness and non-melting have advan-

tages for the overall resistance of the coatings.

DEUTERON and Pergopak matting agents can be used in

water-based, solvent-based and UV curing systems. Reactive

and non-reactive systems. Due to the interparticular moisture,

these organic matting agents cannot be employed in moisture-

curing systems.

DEUTERON and PERGOPAK matting agents are organic,

duroplastic, urea-methanal polymers.

Organic matting agents based on polymethyl urea are not a

replacement for silicas. However, in some cases their use al-

lows surface properties and benefits to be realised which either

cannot be achieved solely with standard matting agents, or

which can only be partly achieved or which can only be

achieved using combinations of standard matting agents.

Due to their chemical nature and structure, organic matting

agents are suitable for use as either the sole matting agent or

as a supplementary matting agent in a variety of coating mate-

rials.

Ground and classified DEUTERON and PERGOPAK matting

agents provide very effective matting, good surface texture,

good mechanical resistance and a pleasant feel.

The main matting agents used in coatings are silicas. Various

types of waxes are also used to provide special properties

such as slip effects and anti-blocking effects. In general, min-

eral fillers only play a subsidiary role as matting agents. Ther-

moplastic polymer powders are mostly used to provide func-

tional effects in special areas such as coil coatings and power

coatings.

The diffuse reflection properties of the surface are decisive for

the intensity of the matting effect. This is influenced by the

type, quantity and alignment of the matting agents. The most

important parameter is the physical macrostructure of the

matting agent. For DEUTERON matting agents the respective

reflectometer value is directly dependent on the relevant parti-

cle size distribution and this can be measured at the surface

via the roughness profile. The requirements with regard to film

thickness, binder solid content, etc. can be fulfilled with these

products for any specific application.

DEUTERON matting agents have many advantages which allow special properties to be realised.

The primary particles of the PMU matting agent are

essentially spherical and the agglomerates are also

approximately spherical. This results in relatively easy

incorporation of the product into the coating and fa-

vourable rheological properties.

The matting effect is primarily achieved via the particle

structure, typical of these products, which gives a

relatively high specific surface area.

The images show the typical particle structures of the

two polymethyl urea matting agents (DEUTERON MK

and DEUTERON PMH-C). These are the primary

particles, which agglomerate to become larger units.

Even the input of very high energy does not cause the

agglomerates to disperse into primary particles,

meaning that "over-grinding" does not cause loss of

the matting effect.

The magnified images clearly show the difference

between the amorphous structure of the silicas and

the particle shape of the organic matting agents.

In addition to the wax additives and compounds, DEUTERON

GmbH offers two base types of polymethyl urea matting

agents.

The DEUTERON MK and PERGOPAK product lines are

manufactured in a continuous process. In contrast, DEU-

TERON PMH-C and the related DEUTERON OG are pro-

duced in batch processes.

The products differ due to the differing management of the

condensation-polymerisation process. The reaction can be

controlled in such a way that different specific surface areas

can be achieved. There are other differences in the precipita-

tion process and in post-treatments procedures such as grind-

ing, drying and classifying. The resulting particles are chemi-

cally identical but have different particle sizes and different

surface microstructures and hence have different effects on

the surfaces of coatings.

The particle size and particle size distribution of the matting

agent determines the matting effect in the dried coating film.

Factors such as the orientation on the surface also play a role

in determining the matting effect.

Due to the physical structure of the particles on the surface,

the incident light is diffusely reflected and no longer direction-

ally reflected or parallel reflected. Besides the particle mor-

phology and the binders, other factors which play an important

role are film shrinkage, volume concentration of the matting

agent to the total binder and the shrinkage time (= open time).

Further factors which influence the development of surface

structures that alter the directional reflection of light and gen-

erate an optically matt appearance are the other components

of the formulation such as the solvent, wetting agents and

dispersing agents, flow control agents and other additives.

The application conditions also partly determine the degree of

the matting effect.

In coating systems in which the presence of organic matting

agents does not result in the desired reduction of gloss, it may

be sensible to also use small amounts of inorganic matting

agents and/or waxes. Possible partial loss of the benefits of

the organic matting agent should in that case be taken into

account. In some cases, synergistic effects can also be

achieved.

For special applications DEUTERON GmbH offers a selection

of its own compounds.

For matting agents, the respective reflectometer value / de-

gree of gloss depends on the size of the particles on the sur-

face and the matt effect. For a specific type of matting agent it

is directly proportional to the roughness on the surface. The

graph shows the Rz values = the maximum roughness proflie

height.

The differing particle size distributions directly manifest them-

selves on the surface and hence in the respective matting

effect.

For solvents which evaporate at different rates there are also

other physical factors which determine the alignment and

orientation of the matting agents on the surface of the coating.

The slower the solvent evaporates, the less intense the con-

vective currents and the less the evaporation cooling. This can

have a direct influence on gloss development.

Experience has shown that organic PMU matting agents can

be used to create surfaces which are significantly less sensi-

tive to different application and formulation conditions.

These effects depend on the respective overall system and

are influenced by many factors. Experiments in our laboratory

have demonstrated that fluctuations in the degree of gloss are

less when organic matting agents are used.

2-C acrylate coating with about 35% mixed solids. The solvents

have differing volatility (evaporation rate), make up 22% of each

coating system and cause significant

differences in the change in the degree of gloss:

DEUTERON MK ca. 3.0 RE 85° = ca. 16.4%

Wax-mod. SILICA ca. 5.5 RE 85° = ca. 40.4%

Analogously, the roughness measurements show lower values

with increasing degree of gloss:

When the gloss development is compared (see graph below),

organic matting agents show lower overall deviation than

silicas. The percentage difference is even higher.

The same behaviour is found for different drying temperatures

or application conditions. Organic matting agents can there-

fore be used to compensate or suppress surface differences

induced by the physical conditions.

The organic DEUTERON matting agents are very hard and

even in agglomerate form have a near-spherical shape. Their

presence on the surfaces of coatings leads to higher mechani-

cal resistance than is possible with conventional matting

agents. On exposure to mechanical stress, the resistance of

the PMU particles on the surface first has to be overcome

before the actual coating matrix can be damaged. Naturally,

the behaviour depends on the performance of the total sys-

tem. There are certainly differences between the mechanical

properties of hard/brittle and elastic/tough coating films which

have to be taken into account. In general the organic matting

agents are very effectively integrated in the coating matrix.

Detachment and subsequent acting as a "polishing agent"

only seldom occurs. Any mechanical load first has to mechani-

cally abrade the particles of the matting agent. The mechani-

cal resistance is also aided by the near-spherical shape of the

particles, which is also responsible for the favourable haptic

and slip properties. The use of more-protective PMU matting

agents either alone or in combination with other agents en-

ables the amount of more sensitive surface additives to be

reduced and in some cases eliminated altogether.

This can be tested for example using a modified scrub test.

Instead of using a hammer to which a scrubbing pad is

bonded, an automatic oscillating device is employed. This

eliminates the subjective factor and makes reproducible re-

sults possible. The nature and intensity of the stress can be

varied by the test weight, the scrubbing-sanding-polishing pad

and the number of strokes.

The evaluation using a reflectometer is achieved by measur-

ing the change in the degree of gloss and by an image re-

cording system which records the changing surface via the

changing composition of the grey portions of the images and

their BW (black-white) histograms. Optionally, the surface

roughness can be measured with the profilometer method.

The following example shows the differing direction and mag-

nitude of the change of a surface matted with silica and with

DEUTERON MK as well as the change arising from polishing

or sanding tests.

Optical evaluation of the change in greyscale histograms al-

lows more detailed statements to be made about the nature

and degree of stress or damage to a surface than is possible

merely from changes in gloss. The surfaces are evaluated as

greyscale images, with representation in 256 steps from 0 =

black to 255 = white. When a curve shifts to the right in the

histogram, namely into the whiter region, that is interpreted as

due to scratching. A shift of the grey values into the black

region is interpreted as the polishing of the surface and an

increase in the saturation.

When selecting the optical parameters, the exposure, white

balance, light angle to the surface and light intensity can be

precisely adapted for the surface under test in order to get

optimum comparative results. On comparing the curves with

each other, information about their position and knowledge of

the load level allow statements to be made about precisely

when a surface is no longer polished but rather scratched.

The resulting classification is a good approximation for evalu-

ating the surface. To do this otherwise, several individual

parameters had to be used, including many subjective com-

parisons. The values show up differences in regions in which

visual discernment is no longer possible.

Scrub test results after 256 strokes with 3M fleece no. 7498

and with a 600 g weight of 5 cm diameter. Both coatings (2-C

solvent-based acrylic coating) are set to ca. 15 RE at an 85°

angle.

With regards to their sensitivity to polishing and sanding loads,

PMU matting agents generally perform better than silicas and

waxes.

The degree of gloss of the surface is a key parameter. Calcu-

lation of the polishing coefficients also gives one a tool which

indicates the intensity and direction of the change.

The polishing coefficient is the change given as the gradient

of the respective gloss curve to the base curve. Positive val-

ues indicate polishing, negative values indicate scratching.

The values are proportional to the change.

Blocking resistance

The various matting additives have a certain mechanical influ-

ence on the coating even during the drying process. In some

cases, systems matted with an organic agent also have con-

siderable advantages with regards to blocking resistance and

early mechanical strength. Here the type and particle size of

the matting agent hardly pays a role.

With DEUTERON products there is normally a considerable

reduction of the blocking tendency. With mixed matting agent

systems there are sometimes synergistic effects, for example

earlier attainment of the final hardness and blocking resis-

tance.

The polymethyl urea particles in the DEUTERON matting

agents are near-spherical or round in shape. The agglomer-

ates also have this structure. That is the reason for the velvety

soft feel and the increase in surface smoothness. Friction on

the surface is reduced to a sort of "roll-off" effect.

In some cases the DEUTERON matting agents markedly

decrease the values for the static and dynamic friction. With

these matting agents the surfaces are considerably smoother

than when silicas are used, especially when higher amounts

of additive are employed.

With the DEUTERON OG types, friction values below those of

waxes and close to those of PTFE modified coatings can be

achieved, without disadvantages such as adverse effects on

recoatability and on intermediate layer adhesion. The surface

smoothness remains close to that of surfaces without addi-

tives.

In contrast, the DEUTERON ST series of texturing agents give

a roughness effect which initially gives increased friction val-

ues. Only when the amount added in the relevant system is

high enough and the particles lie close to each other is there a

"roll-off" effect. Surfaces with customised anti-slip properties

or slip properties can be prepared, in particular by using com-

binations of additives.

DEUTERON matting agents have a favourable effect on the

haptic properties of the surfaces. The feel becomes signifi-

cantly softer, similar to surfaces modified with waxes. In con-

trast to the situation with most waxes, the ability of the surface

to be recoated is not adversely affected.

The static friction is the force which has to be applied to over-

come the adhesion. The dynamic friction is the force required

to maintain motion and is generally less than the static friction.

In many systems, the somewhat lower matting effect of the

PMU matting agents compared to classical silicas can be

compensated by increasing the amount added, without ad-

versely affecting the viscosity. In general the viscosity does

not increase to same extent as it does with silicas. In addition,

the use of organic matting agents does not cause loss of

pseudoplasticity. Although smaller quantities of inorganic

matting agents are often required to gave the corresponding

degree of gloss, the viscosity at an equivalent degree of gloss

is considerably higher.

With DEUTERON matting products the rheological properties

have not been predetermined! Precise control of the viscosity

and flow behaviour rests with the formulator, who hence has a

greater number of options.

The flow behaviour of a coating system is dependent on many

factors. Normally thixotropic behaviour is desired in coatings.

High shear during application means low viscosity and good

flow. After application the system should build up its viscosity

again relatively quickly so that there is no running of the coat-

ing.

The lower effect of organic matting agents on the viscosity

and rheological properties allows more precise formulation of

the coating with special additives and raw materials. Destruc-

tion of the rheological properties due to mechanical influ-

ences, for example too high shear forces on silicas, does not

occur when using organic matting agents.

Comparison of the flow curves (viscosity plotted against

speed) for the geometric program with increasing and then

decreasing speed. The steepness of the curves and viscosity

loss with increasing speed and redevelopment of the starting

viscosity provides a detailed description of the pseudoplastic

behaviour of a coating. Pseudoplasticity is the property of a

non-Newtonian* fluid to show a lower viscosity under high

shearing forces and this is a required base property of many

coating systems.

Although DEUTERON matting agents in the wet, unprocessed

coating system can cause considerable clouding, there is the

reverse effect in the dried coating.

Due to the high transparency of the actual particles, it is possi-

ble, despite the high degree of matting, to produce coatings

with relatively low film turbidity. This is important where there

are strict requirements on there being little change of colour

shade. Even when the amount of added matting agent is very

high in the dull range, where the matt surface alone has a

cloudy appearance, there is still a positive effect on the bril-

liance of the base surface. The wetting properties of the coat-

ing are not adversely affected.

Compared to conventional solid surface agents, DEUTERON

matting agents have little effect on the optical properties, for

example the "warm-look" of the base surface. A more neutral

base surface appearance is possible using PMU matting

agents. That is still so in situations where somewhat higher

amounts of organic matting agents are required to achieve the

same degree of gloss as surfaces matted with silicas.

Our experience is that systems matted with our products do

not fundamentally differ from conventionally matted systems

when exposed to climatic conditions. This also naturally de-

pends on the properties and effectiveness of the coating sys-

tem. In some systems the resistance to moisture and UV-

resistance can however still be further improved. In other

systems there may be turbidity due to hydrophilic interactions,

which normally do not affect the resistance of the coating film

or its degree of gloss, etc. The use of hydrophobicising addi-

tives, the use of some silica and in particular the selection of

suitable binders can be advantageous here.

DEUTERON matting agents are UV-resistant when used in

coating applications.

DEUTERON matting agents and texturing agents are inert to

the film and pot preservatives typically used in coatings. Our

agents have long been employed in relevant products, for

example wood glazes, without negative effects on the pre-

servatives.

Due to their relatively narrow particle size distribution and

their compact and almost spherical shape, DEUTERON mat-

ting agents are able to markedly influence the flip-flop effect of

most metallic, glimmer and mica pigments. The additive parti-

cles are incorporated into the coating matrix between the

pigment platelets and so define the distance between the

pigment particles. Unlike the situation with conventional wax

additives, the flip-flop effect is consequently not stabilised or

strengthened, but rather attenuated. The brightness remains

constant over a larger angle range and generates a more

uniform brightness effect. This is desirable in applications

where no marked flip-flop effect is wanted.

"Ideally" orientated pigment platelets provide greater directional

reflection due to the lower area of the edge surface relative to the

horizontal surface.

In unorientated pigments there is mainly diffuse reflection.

By adding different amounts of the additive, the flip-flop effect

can also be influenced and adjusted.

Additives of differing particle size allow the effect to be optimised

by selecting the optimum particle size for the relevant pigment.

With additives having a relatively narrow particle size distribution,

the distances between the effect-pigment particles can be fixed

and orientated.

Aluminium pigments are effect-pigments and have a special

metallic appearance. The so-called flip-flop effect occurs with

metallic pigments and other effect-pigments, whereby differing

brightness is observed depending on the viewing angle or

angle of incidence of the light. This effect depends on the

nature, shape, size, texture of the edges and the orientation of

the pigments in the film. Due to the platelet-like structure of

these effect-pigments, they orientate themselves in the me-

dium parallel to the substrate and the combination of many

small individual "mirrors" causes a metallic effect. The thinner

a pigment platelet, the easier it orientates itself in the coating

film and the more intense the flip-flop effect.

Metallic- & effect-coatings

Not in all applications is a strong flip-flop effect desired for

metallic surfaces. When viewed from low angles, an intensive

flip-flop effect leads to very little reflection and hence a dark

appearance. In order to overcome this, fine solid particles can

be employed as an additive to reduce the flip-flop effect and

generate greater diffuse reflection on the surface over a large

viewing angle. This allows totally different optical effects to be

achieved, without suppressing the metallic effect and bril-

liance. The parallel alignment of the pigments is promoted by

the finely ground polymethyl urea resins which act as

"spacers" between the individual metallic pigment particles.

The particles form a network structure which prevents tilting of

the small metal platelets as soon as the desired orientation in

the film has been achieved. Uniform brilliance with less differ-

ence in brightness is achieved, even at different viewing an-

gles.

The organic polymethyl urea particles do not act as rheology-

additives or as antisettling agents! If necessary, other addi-

tives can be used in conjunction with the PMU particles.

The DEUTERON products are fully compatible with commonly

used wax additives and rheology-additives.

The DEUTERON matting and surface agents

can be used to adapt and adjust metallic coat-

ings and effect-coatings to each other.

In order to influence the metallic pigments, a

dose of only ca. 0.1% to 1.0% in the total sys-

tem or ca. 2% to 20% based on the pigment is

recommended.

Reflection curves for different additives at constant illumina-

tion 45° to the surface. For comparative purposes, a mirror

and aluminium plate were also tested. The mirror measure-

ment at 90° to the light source was defined as the standard =

100% value.

A narrow particle size distribution allows largely similar pig-

ment platelets to be aligned next to each other and hence

produces a uniform effect. The broader the particle size distri-

bution, the less uniform the orientation of the pigment particles

to each other. The larger the distance between the pigment

particles, the more uniform the surface appearance, namely

the flip-flop effect is attenuated and the surface has a more

even brightness over a larger viewing angle. DEUTERON MK

products are very suitable for this application. In order to re-

tain the fine brilliance, the finer products or wet-ground DEU-

TERON OG can be used.

If classical wax additives are used to stabilise or strengthen

the flip-flop effect in the same coatings, the effects may cancel

each other out. However, it is also possible that the combina-

tions produce the desired results. In order to test the scope of

all these influences, it is necessary to carry out laboratory

tests for each specific application. The mutual dependence

and selection of the raw materials is too complex for us to be

able to give you detailed recommendations here.

Soft-feel coatings

DEUTERON R

Special coatings known as soft-feel coatings are used to coat

objects to give a special surface feel. The most important

components in soft-feel coatings are suitable binders. In addi-

tion, special requirements are also put on these surfaces with

regard to the abrasion resistance and scratch resistance at

high degrees of matting. Soft-feel coatings usually have very

low gloss and the micronised organic matting agents in the

DEUTERON MK and PERGOPAK series are ideally suited for

this application.

The narrow particle size distribution and the particle shape

intensifies and promotes the soft-feel of these coatings. The

use of the mentioned matting agents produces highly scratch-

resistant and abrasion-resistant coatings, whose elastic prop-

erties are not adversely affected. This is also so when high

amounts of additives are employed. The products are easy to

incorporate into the coating formulations. The use of wetting

and dispersing agents is generally not required.

In some cases it may be either necessary or desirable to em-

ploy silicas, along with the organic matting agents, in order to

adjust the degree of matting. The optimum ratio of organic to

inorganic matting agents must be carefully determined by the

coating manufacturer in laboratory tests. The presence of

SiO2 may adversely affect the surface properties, for example

the scratch resistance. The use of waxes can influence the

defined softening temperature, for example the resistance to

polishing.

DEUTERON R

A special application field for DEUTERON matting and textur-

ing agents is the coating of glass and transparent plastics.

These products are particularly suitable for matting and effect-

creation.

Due to their unique property profile, surfaces can be created

ranging from wax-like, velvety-soft, silky-gloss and dull

through to special effects such as frosted and structured sur-

faces. A further plus is the high mechanical resistance of this

product line. The transparency of the

base surface is not impaired here

because the particles themselves are

colourless and transparent. The

clouding effect due to the matt surface

cannot be prevented because this is

due to diffuse reflection at the surface.

DEUTERON R

Duroplastic organic surface additives offer a vari-

ety of formulation options and can often be used

to improve coating systems and printing inks.

No fundamental comparison can be made with silicas and

waxes. These products cannot be used in straight exchange or

as alternatives. PMU matting agents cannot be considered to

be a replacement for inorganic matting agents or waxes.

The amount of organic matting agent required in a coating

cannot be easily calculated in percentage terms.

Organic matting agents have different property profiles than

inorganic matting agents and waxes.

Whether or if an organic matting agent, either alone or in com-

bination with other matting agents, can or should be used or

can improve the required coating properties must always be

tested in suitable experiments. No generally applicable recom-

mendations can be given here which cover all systems.

Application DEUTERON MK-matting agents are suitable as exclusive matting agents for water-borne, solvent-containing and sol-vent-free systems, air-drying as well as stoving. They can also be used in printing inks, wood lacquers, UV-curing coating, coil-coatings, lacquers on foils, aqueous wood- and furniture varnishes. The finer types are suitable where particularly low dry film thickness is applied or where very smooth surfaces have to be realized. The combination with inorganic matting agents is possible and leads to improved mechanical resistances. Scratch resistance and resistance against polishing will be increased.

Dosage The quantity depends first of all on the requested gloss and the used binder. Additions of 1,0 - 15,0 % calculated on total formulation are common. The exact dosage should be deter-mined by own trials.

Processing Because of their excellent dispersing properties DEU-TERON MK-products can be stirred into the liquid phase with a simple stirrer. This is applicable for water-based and solvent-based systems. It is also possible to grind them with the mill base to obtain an optimum of dispersion in paints containing pigments.

Storage conditions DEUTERON MK-types can be stored for at least 24 months at room temperature and dry conditions.

Properties DEUTERON MK matting agents are micro-ground resp. mi-cronized powders. The fineness allows for the use of DEU-TERON MK-products in a wide field of applications for produc-ing satin-flat and satin-gloss coatings. The small binder de-mand of DEUTERON MK only leads to a nonessential viscos-ity influence, which is significant for UV-curing lacquers. DEU-TERON MK is resistant against solvents and chemicals which are customary in the paint industry. These products can also be used in exterior applications. Adjustments to specific re-quirements can easily be made due to the available particle sizes. DEUTERON MK-types show a heat resistance of more than 200 °C, temporarily up to 300 °C. Weather resistance and light stability are most favorable. They are suitable for the use in UV and water-based coatings to decrease the blocking without worsening of the recoatability. DEUTERON MK, MK-F, MK-F6 are insolvable in standard solvents used in the industry. In some cases the surface properties can be increased by using a combination of DEUTERON MK with a suitable wax, e.g. DEUTERON WAX PP or DEUTERON WAX TF.

Properties DEUTERON PMH-C (compact) is a micronized, pure thermo-set with compact particle structure. Due to its excellent fine-ness the product can be used in a wide application for matting of varnishes and coatings or as an additive. Even in higher dosages, the products specific oil absorption value gives favorable results regarding viscosity increase. Flexibility of the coating will be spoiled only insignificantly by the use of DEUTERON PMH-C as matting agent. As a thermoset, DEUTERON PMH-C in many cases in-creases the blocking stability of coatings, whenever the char-acter of the used binder shows tendency to thermoplasticity. DEUTERON PMH-C is resistant to most customary solvents in use in the coatings industry. The product also offers good chemical resistance. DEUTERON PMH-C is resistant to temperatures above 200 °C. Color fastness and weather resistance are excellent. The use in exterior applications is possible practically without limitation. The coatings are recoatable. DEUTERON PMH-C is free of waxes. In certain fields of application the product’s effectiveness in matting can be increased by combining it with small amounts of Si02.

Application DEUTERON PMH-C can be used as a matting agent in aque-ous and solvent based coating systems. A suitable matting agent combination can be created for solvent free, radiation curing varnishes with the additional use of SiO2 . With its favorable oil absorption value the product is predesti-nated for coatings with high flexibility, for instance coil coat-ings and leather finishes. In powder coatings the presence of DEUTERON PMH-C can improve fluidity and spraying property of the powder coating.

Dosage The optimum in dosage depends on the required degree of gloss and the character of the used binder. The addition can be 1.0 – 7.0 %. The optimum in dosage should be determined by own trials.

Processing Due to its excellent dispersing properties DEUTERON PMH-C can be easily incorporated with a mechanical stirrer or dissol-ver. Attention has to be paid on a sufficient rate of shear. This also applies for aqueous lacquers systems. The use of a wet-ting agent is generally not necessary. Due to its good tem-perature resistance DEUTERON PMH-C can be also added to the mill base.

Storage conditions DEUTERON PMH-C can be stored for at least 24 months at room temperature and dry conditions.

Properties DEUTERON ST texturing agents are powders. They give coatings a surface texture. The nature and degree of texturing depends on the film thickness that is applied and the ratio of texturing agent to binder. The texturing agents have different particle size distributions. The coarser grade induces more intense texturing with good maintenance of gloss. The finer grade gives finer texturing. Depending on the specific formulation this can lead to a re-duction in the degree of gloss. The coarser fractions are re-sponsible for the texturing, whilst the finer particles can lead to matting. Depending on the duration of exposure to heat, the texturing agents are thermally stable to well over 200 °C. The products do not melt and this therefore distinguishes them from wax and amide-based products. The texturing agents are resistant to the solvents typically used in coatings. Depending on the composition of the coating, the texturing agents may tend to sediment during storage of the coating. In such cases it is therefore necessary to employ an anti-settling agent.

Application DEUTERON ST texturing agents can be used in both solvent-based and water-based coating systems. Potential applica-tions include coil-coating systems and coatings for plastic surfaces. They can be used to customize the haptic and opti-cal surface properties and can be used as functional additives to reduce the coefficient of sliding friction.

Dosage The amount added to coatings depends on the desired sur-face texture. This in turn depends on the thickness of the applied coating. Even the addition of 1% results in textured surfaces. If desired, 15% or more can be used, due to the low binder requirement. The optimum amount required to realize a desired effect must always be determined by own trials.

Processing The texturing agents can be mixed into the coating using a speed-stirrer or dissolver. Concomitant use of wetting agents is not required, even when used in water-based systems. The products are very stable to shear but dispersion processes, that can be caused by grinding, must be avoided. In pigment-containing systems, texturing agents must therefore, where required, be added after grinding the pigment.
