The load-bearing mat for the next generation of process insulation

ROCKWOOL Technical Insulation offers a wide range of excellent and innovative stone wool products for the insulation of industrial plants. These products are built on the expertise and extensive experience of our outstanding people. As experts, they develo-ped a one of kind ProRox range for technical insulation.

With this specific field of application in mind, we introduce our load-bearing mat for the insulation of horizontal technical installations. ProRox MA 520 ALU is primarily an innovative and energy efficient, fast to install and safe alternative alongside the traditional wired mats. On the following pages we show you how these load-bearing mats can help you shape your business even more to your benefit.

For more details, consult the ProRox Process Manual. Here you find all about the insulation of horizontal technical installations and more.

Save time and obtain a better insulation solution with ProRox MA 520 ALU

Metal cladding

ROCKWOOL Technical Insulation introduces with ProRox MA 520 ALU a new insulation mat for thermal and acoustic insulation of pipes, vessels, ducts and equipment with operating temperatures up to 300°C.

Traditional wired matsWired mats are commonly used for the insulation of large diameter pipes, vessels, pressure tanks and boilers and are usually covered by a protective sheet metal cladding.

In traditional systems with wired mats spacers are essential to hold the weight of the cladding and other external loads. They transfer the cladding loads directly onto the pipe or equipment. However, spacers form thermal bridges and generate greater heat loss and cladding hot spots. Insulating with load-bearing mats is a more efficient and safer solution.

Insulation with load-bearing mats Load-bearing mats, such as ProRox MA 520 ALU, are the latest development in the industrial insulation sector. The stone wool insulation mat (with a special fibre structure) is bonded onto a reinforced aluminium foil. Its inherent flexibilty makes the mats easy to install.

ProRox MA 520 ALU is suitable for temperatures up to 300°C. Their high compression resistance means, that in many cases, load-bearing mats can be applied without spacers. Conse-quently, the number of thermal bridges which have a negative influence on insulation performance, is greatly reduced.

The result is considerably reduced installation time and costs. The lack of spacers and “unforeseen” gaps minimises heat losses and the risk of personal injuries due to hot spots on the cladding. Load-bearing mats like ProRox MA 520 ALU are cut to the corresponding length of the pipe (or equipment) circumference on site and are fastened with bands.

Advantages: No spacers, less heat loss,

even surface temperature Thanks to the lack of spacers, ProRox MA 520 ALU generates a lower heat loss and produces an even surface temperature across the sheet metal cladding.

Faster installation, less materials No spacers, no wire mesh. It makes the ProRox MA 520 ALU load-bearing mat fast and easy to apply with less materials.

Reduced insulation thickness Without spacers, a reduced insulation thickness can be applied to achieve the same heat loss levels in comparison with wired mats.

Lower operating costs ProRox MA 520 ALU is a sound investment with an improved payback time in comparison with insulation solutions which use spacers.

1. No spacers, lower heat loss, even surface temperature

It is not necessary to install spacers or support structures. The lack of spacers (and thermal bridges) gives rise to lower heat losses. This way, they comply with main guide-lines such as DS 452 ver. 3, which states that no point at the surface must exceed 50°C. ProRox MA 520 ALU yields an even surface temperature across the sheet metal cladding. The cladding can be mounted directly on top of the insulation, generating no hot spots and reducing the risk of personal injuries.

2. Faster installation, less material Without the interference of spacers it is possible to apply the load-bearing mats faster and easier than wired mats. It can save up to 30% installation time! Moreover, ProRox MA 520 ALU is a wire mesh-free solution. Handling, cutting and installation is easy. It saves time and secures optimal insulation performance.

The particular advantage of the ProRox MA 520 ALU load-bearing mat lies in the fact that support structures are not required and therefore thermal bridges which bypass the insulation are minimised or eliminated. But there is more.

The advantages of the ProRox MA 520 ALU load-bearing mat at a glance are:

3. Reduced insulation thickness In comparison with wired mats, ProRox MA 520 ALU offers an even, firm surface for installing the sheet cladding. But more importantly: without spacers, in many cases more shallow insulation thickness can be applied to achieve the same heat loss levels.

4. Lower operating costs The operating costs of the installation decrease as a result of lower heat loss. With unchanged insulation thickness and no spacers (and thermal bridges) saving of up to 20% can be achieved. The payback time of the investment will be improved and the running costs will be reduced in the lifetime of the investment.

With a given heat loss demand, ProRox MA 520 ALU with no spacers requires less insulation compared to a solution with spacers. The example below shows the reduced insulation thickness and cladding surface area when using ProRox MA 520 ALU.

ProductProRox MA 520 ALU is a compression-resistant, flexible stone wool mat with a predominantly vertically oriented fiber struc-ture coated on one side with a tear-resistant mesh reinforced aluminum foil.

Through a special manufacturing process it reaches a much higher compressive strength than conventional stonewool mats. The ProRox MA 520 ALU load-bearing mat is, as standard, offered in AS quality acc. EN13468.

ApplicationsThe insulation mat is suitable for thermal and acoustic insula-tion of large diameter pipes, vessels, ducts and equipment up to operating temperatures of 300ºC.
