1. Welcome Message

It is a pleasure to invite you to Versailles in June 2013 for the 15th international conference of the Network on Recycling of Agricultural, Municipal and Industrial Residues in Agriculture.

Society faces a challenge to develop and promote a circular economy by improving the relationship between urban and rural areas, increasing sustainable food production as required by the growing human population and through management of the cultivated and natural environment. Recycling of organic residues to cropped soils can benefit ecosystem services in managed systems, contributing to sustainable production of food, biomass, etc. while preserving ecosystem health and biodiversity. The cost/benefits of recycling have to be compared with those of other treatment processes, and also to other systems of crop production. Treatment processes and integrated assessments have to be developed for limiting any adverse effects of recycling residues and increasing their contribution to useful services. This will be the challenge of the conference, together with facilitating communication, discussion and collaboration between researchers and stakeholders working on all aspects of organic residues management and recycling in agriculture.

This 15th RAMIRAN conference will be organized by the research unit of INRA “EGC” (Environment & Arable Crops) and partners. EGC has been for a long time involved in research on ecosystem services related with the recycling of organic residues in cultivated fields and on the fate of organic pollutants in soil-water-plant-air systems. Since 2010, it leads a national network of sites for the monitoring and study of long-term effects of recycling organic residues in arable fields (SOERE PRO).

c) Technical visits

They are included in the registration fees for the package “participant” and “student”. You have the choice between the experimental site of the Agronomical Engineering

School AgroParisTech or to the research center of Veolia Environnement. Inscription is highly recommended.

• The experimental farm of Grignon

The Farm of Grignon includes an area of 815ha with about 600ha of agricultural area (spread over four sites: Grignon, Palaiseau, Bois d'Arcy and St Quentin en Yvelines) and 4ha of buildings. The remaining area corresponds to the Castle Park School (forest, walkways, sheep pastures) and farm buildings of Palaiseau. Our farm is experimental through the trials conducted within the various workshops (sheep, cattle and crops). The missions of the Farm are to: - be a support of educational activities and training for school, - be enrolled in local rural development issues, - conduct experiments, - have a viable economic activity, both in operation and investment.

It is based on 3 Research Centers located in France (Rueil-Malmaison (92), Limay (78), Maisons-Laffitte (78)), and on internationals units (North America, Israel and China). In total there are 600 VERI researchers and more than 150 pilots of all sizes (from the pilot laboratory to pilot plant built on site). The work fields conducted at VERI-Limay research center cover in particular the professions of:

- Dalkia: energy services and industrial utilities management, - Veolia-Propreté: collection-sorting, storage, heat, physico-chemical or biological

treatments, sanitation, fuel and material recycling.

8. A bit of tourism…

At only 20 km from Paris, discover a city which was built by French History and in particular under the period of King Louis XIII and Louis XIV. Versailles is worldly famous for the “Chateau de Versailles” which is the symbol of French power and force during the 18th century. Gardens “à la française”, “Galerie des Glaces” show majesty and luxury which were part of the empire at that time. Nowadays, city of Versailles organizes concerts and festivities in the Castle as to give it a rebirth. Versailles has been also a refuge for the French government, not only during the Revolution, but also during “La Commune de Paris” in 1870 and the 3rd Republic. As a consequence, a lot of buildings were built because of special needs from the different government and historic period. To name a few of these buildings:

• La Salle du Jeu de Paume (built in 1686) • Hôtel de la Préfecture (built between 1863-1866) • La Salle des Congrès (renewed in 1837)…
