Flooring

That tile floor that you adored inyour 40s can be a slip hazard whenyou reach your 70s. Debunking common floor care misconceptions(ARA) - Whether it's the dog

tracking in mud or the kids carry-ing in dirt and leaves, there aremany ways floors can becomedirty and unattractive.Unfortunately, for many peoplethe process they use to clean theirwood flooring might be doingmore harm than good.

"There are a lot of misconcep-tions about floor care that lead topremature deterioration," saysTom Sullivan, founder of LumberLiquidators, the largest retailer ofspecialty hardwood flooring.

Some cleaning techniques toavoid, because they can damagehardwood flooring, are:

* Vacuuming. Contrary to thebelief that vacuuming is the bestway to rid wood flooring of dustand debris, it's actually harmful.The hard bristles on the rotatingbrush can scratch the wood, andsmall amounts of damage to thewood over time will make the sur-face look worn and uneven.
