Home gardeners and lawn enthusi-asts generally accumulate a number oftools of the trade in order to successful-ly manage their gardening needs. As aresult, many homeowners build a gar-den shed to store all their tools andlawn care accessories.

A garden shed presents an ideal wayto store all of the tools and appliancesneeded for the weekend hobby. Plus, itenables homeowners to clear out clut-ter from the garage or basement. Alocked garden shed can be a safe placein which to store sharp tools, fuel andsome chemical products.

Just because the shed will have utilitydoesn't mean it has to be an eyesore onthe property. There are ways to createor purchase garden sheds that are aes-thetically appealing and will blend inwith the landscape or the main house.

Do-it-yourselfers who have decidedto build a garden shed and want to doso affordably can shop around forlower-priced material. It may be a goodidea to purchase a framing kit from ahome-improvement store or onlineretailer and then shop around for exte-rior materials. Individuals can also findused sheds from auction sites or news-paper classifieds and simply retrofitthese structures to meet individualneeds.

Although sheds will be exposed tothe elements, because they are not live-able structures they don't require thesame level of construction as a home oraddition, like a garage. This means thata homeowner is able to save somemoney with materials. Pressboard maybe durable enough and less expensivethan plywood. There's little need forinsulation or expensive windows. Infact, unless it is for a decorative stand-point, windows are unnecessary alto-gether.

It is likely that people who have hadrecent upgrades made on their homesmay have leftover materials that can beput to use on a garden shed. Roofingshingles, extra aluminum siding andwood trim can be used on the shed.Even leftover latex paints and stains canbe use on the shed.

Homeowners should visit a retailerof prefabricated sheds to see how they

are made. This can provide insight as tothe size and structure and the type ofconstruction that will be needed.

If budget is not a concern, home-owners may want to purchase pre-made sheds that can be customized tomimic the architecture and color of theperson's home. Stained glass and cot-tage features can make a shed seem likean intimate retreat nestled in the yard.

In addition to being a fine place tostore garden tools, a shed can also beconstructed to serve as a child's playspace. A miniature home in the yardcan be a fun play zone for kids and bethe centerpiece for hours of imagina-tive outdoor fun. GT114716

Purple has long thought to bea noble color, once relegatedonly to the upper crust of socie-ty. As Spring 2011 fashiontrends dictate, today purple is

being enjoyed by the masses andshowing up everywhere fromshoes to lip gloss.

Tyrian purple may be the old-est known form of the colorpurple and the original shadefound in the 6th century. Thecolor was derived from mucussecreted by the spiny dye-murex, a type of snail. Manyemperors wore Tyrian purpleon their robes, edged in gold. InMedieval Europe, only the aris-tocracy could afford blue shadesof dye. Royal Purple was devel-oped -- a bluer shade of purple-- and worn by kings andqueens. Purple has a long-standing reputation of being aroyal color and one explicitlyassociated with nobility.

Today, of course, blue andpurple dyes are more common-place and the masses are quiteable to enjoy purple as much as

they desire. Still, it's hard to dis-solve the correlation betweenpurple and nobility, and thosewho don purple may walk with

their heads held a little bit high-er and shoulders back.

There are a number of springfashion and beauty trends that

are showcasing the vibrant colorpurple this year.

ShoesInstead of the classic black or

brown shoe, purple shoes canbe worn to add a splash of colorto many ensembles. It's fun andcarefree and doesn't require acomplete overhaul of awardrobe.

Shop Steve Madden for pur-ple pumps that will turn heads. Those who prefer somethingsporty can stroll in purple Kedsor Sketchers.

WardrobeThere were plenty of purple

hues coming down the runwayat Paris and New York fashion

shows. Paintbox colors -- brighthues that banish the blahs fromwinter wardrobes -- are therage. Head-to-toe color is possi-ble or individuals can do colorblocking with two or three boldcolors, such as purple, yellowand orange.

MakeupPurple is all over cosmetic

products for the spring. Frompurple tinted lip gloss (MACDare To Wear Lipglass in BanThis) to full color (Urban DecayLipstick in Wanted) to shades ofpurple on the eyes (DuWopViolet Eyes), purples and laven-ders complement a number ofskin tones and can add dramaday or night.

AccessoriesOf course people who want

just a little pop of purple powercan don a purple leather belt ora lilac tie for gentlemen. Checkout handbags in purpleembossed leather and amethystearrings that offer subtle purpleshades.

Expect to see plenty of purpleall over the place come thewarm-weather season. With avariety of hues and intensities, purple can be a welcome changeto anyone's beauty and fashionregimen. TF114704

Homeowners who have spentmany years in one home likelyraised a family and shared manymemories inside of those walls. When the kids grow and move on itcan be somewhat bittersweet. Beingleft with vacated rooms -- especial-ly ones still decked out in children'sdecor -- can cause the house to feelmore empty than it has to be. Nowis the time to turn those emptyrooms into adult spaces.

Homeowners shouldn't feelguilty about taking down bandposters and packing away LittleLeague baseball caps. Chances arethe children made good use of theirrooms and now it's time for theadults to reclaim the spaces for theirvery own.

There are easy ways to turn chil-dren's bedrooms into spaces adultscan enjoy. With a few fixes, theroom can be a man's space, awoman's retreat, or a room bothcan enjoy.

Because the room will reflect theadult homeowners' interests, itshould be designed with their needs

in mind. Comfortable furnitureand items that please the residentsshould be incorporated.

Lighting should be used to set themood. If the room will be used fortelevision watching, have dimmerswitches so that the brightness canbe tuned down. For reading oroffice work, have overhead lightsand task lighting, such as a desklamp.

For the "man cave" the room canreflect interests, such as sports orfishing, but be decorated in a subtleway to complement the rest of thehome's decor. For example, if a guylikes a sports team, he can paint thewalls in a subdued shade of theteam colors instead of hanging pen-nants or player jerseys on the walls.

Homeowners should rememberto include extra seating and spaceso that they can entertain friends orfamily in their newly adapted spe-cialized rooms. A table for snacks oreven a small refrigerator hiddenwithin a decorative piece of furni-ture can keep snacks and beveragesavailable. FH109826
