2 Club Activities & Around the Members NOVEMBER: We were spoiled with a mass of colours, shapes and sizes - the basic attraction of our favourite plants. The mini show of orthophytum and dyckia ensured there were plenty of prickles. Members were fascinated with the shape of Bren’s Dyckia goehringii, the stiff leaves turned under to the stem. Bren said the offsets come on short stolons. Dyckia ‘Arizona’ was perfect a crisp silver blue. Paul entered a double Dyckia leptostachya, both plants in flower. Orthophytum aff. roseum Dyckia ‘Arizona’ Dyckia goehringii

! ! ! ! ! ! ! 3! Vriesea flammea grown by Brendan is huge. We saw it a few years ago at Cairns Show, but this time it was in flower, with over 30 bright spikes bobbing around. It was just beautiful and brought out the “ahhs" from most members. The photo does not show the red spotting on the leaves. Whopped ‘em in the voting, as did ‘Arctic Storm’!

!Darryl showed a seedling of Neoregelia ‘Mandela’ with a deep purple centre, the leaves evenly stacked leaf endings acute, or pinched to a point. Members liked it too. I wish I had a photo of Christel’s Guzmania ‘Iced Milk’, it was perfect and in flower, not a mark on any of the leaves. Well done Christel. ! ! ! !!!!!!!! And there was more - the tillandsias. Marguerite showed a perfect xerographica ball. Bob a flowering andreana with orange flower and leaf tips. Paul’s brachycaulos was flowering, the leaves bright red. Karen Cross showed a well grown streptophylla, just about to flower, the inflorescence rhachis a soft pink. Dave’s streptophylla x ‘Trieta’ !

Bits & Pieces The Amazon rainforest produces more than  20% of the world's oxygen supply. The Amazon River pushes so much water into the Atlantic Ocean that, more more than one hundred miles at sea off the mouth of the river, one can dip fresh water out of the ocean. ! The  volume of water in the Amazon river is greater than the next eight largest rivers in the world combined and three times the flow of all rivers in the United States.!! ! Antarctica is the only land on our planet that is not owned by any country. 90% of the world's ice covers Antarctica. This ice also represents 70% of all the fresh water in the world. As strange as it sounds,  however, Antarctica is essentially a desert; the average yearly total precipitation is about five cm. ! Although covered with ice (all but 0.4% of it, ice.), Antarctica is the driest place on the planet, with an absolute humidity lower than the Gobi desert.!! In the Sahara Desert, in Algeria, there is a town named Tidikelt, which did not receive a drop of rain for ten years. ! Technically though, the driest place on earth is in the valleys of the Antarctic near Ross Island - there has been no rainfall there for two million years.  !! Siberia contains more than 25% of the world's forests.!! The water of Angel Falls (the world's highest) in Venezuela drops 3,212 feet (979 meters). They are 15 times higher than Niagara Falls.!*************************************************************************************************************!Mark Twain said!“Everyone complains about the weather but no one does anything about it”!! Australia is in drought, Cairns is currently brown but we are finally getting some short showers. I could not understand why my Alcantarea imperials red were burning. We had a visit from Jane & Stan Walkely and he said ‘You have no humidity’ - never thought of that! Our plants have grown used to it and now react. Bromeliads that have spent all their life in ‘all day sun’ have burned. ! As we move into cyclone season - if we get a blow, pack you bromeliads together, preferably on the ground so they cannot roll when the eye passes and wind comes from the other direction.! When it rains and rains if your plants are potted with good drainage, they should just glow happily. Remember John Catlan’s theory “Remove those offsets, pot them up, as when it is humid and raining, it is good rooting weather.”

! ! ! ! ! ! ! 6!!Your Newsletter Yes, just 8 pages! Computer went haywire, so I purchased a new one - yes it has different settings etc., a bit of a nightmare. There are just 8 pages because I just could not be bothered. Most of you read only the jokes and look at the pictures. If you used your library you would get an idea of the quality of your own newsletter. There are no unsolicited articles, even when I ask for comments, few are received. There are few comments except from overseas! These usually are from the high quality Editors - they know what it takes to put a newsletter together. Here are some of their comments. Herb from his apartment in New York: Wonderful pictures of great collections. I was drooling with jealousy.!Dave from San Diego: Thanks Lynn, loved the garden tours . . .!Rei who send me 2 emails per day: Very nice group of bromeliads, it seems that you all have great weather to grow such nice noes.! Brendan & Bob take photos at meetings, then downsize them and send them to me. I really appreciate their contribution and I know you enjoy the photos of our favourite plants. So instead of jokes, here are some more pics! Lynn.

11 From Rei Magic Bank Account - Something to think about .. Imagine that you had won the following *PRIZE* in a contest: Each morning your bank would deposit $86,400 in your private account for your use. However, this prize has rules. The rules: 1. Everything that you didn't spend during each day would be taken away from you. 2. You may not simply transfer money into some other account. 3. You may only spend it. 4. Each morning upon awakening, the bank opens your account with another $86,400 for that day. 5. The bank can end the game without warning; at any time it can say, “Game Over!" It can close the account and you will not receive a new one. What would you personally do? You would buy anything and everything you wanted right? Not only for yourself, but for all the people you love and care for. Even for people you don't know, because you couldn't possibly spend it all on yourself, right? You would try to spend every penny, and use it all, because you knew it would be replenished in the morning, right? ACTUALLY, This GAME is REAL ... Are You Shocked??? YES! Each of us is already a winner of this *PRIZE*. We just can't seem to see it. The PRIZE is *TIME* 1. Each morning we awaken to receive 86,400 seconds as a gift of life. 2. And when we go to sleep at night, any remaining time is NOT credited to us. 3. What we haven't used up that day is forever lost. 4. Yesterday is forever gone. 5. Each morning the account is refilled, but the bank can dissolve your account at any time WITHOUT WARNING... ! SO, what will YOU do with your 86,400 seconds? ! Those seconds are worth so much more than the same amount in dollars. Think about it and remember to enjoy every second of your life, because time races by so much quicker than you think. ! So take care of yourself, be happy, love deeply and enjoy life! Here's wishing you a wonderful and beautiful year. Start spending.
