City Council Is In Love With Roundabouts Iamnotsurehowmanyofyouareawarethatthecityisplanningtoinstallaseriesofroundaboutsinwhattheyseeasananswertotraffic problems while at the same time keeping up with the Jones (Southlake)inappearances.Whileinsomecasesroundaboutscanbe a benefit for traffic flow with nice esthetics and in other ways they canbeasafetynightmare.OneoftheroundaboutsthatthecityisplanningtoinstallisatthecornerofJackson/PoolandGladeandIthinktherearesomequestionsthatweneedtobeawareofbeforeweallowthistohappen.
TheprimaryquestiontoaskisforthesafetyofourchildrenwhoeitherwalkorridetheirbikestoOCTaylororotherlocationsandwhowillhavetonavigatethecrosswalksystemattheroundabout.Crosswalksatroundaboutsaresetbackatleast5to10feetbackoneachstreet.Howwillasinglecrossingguardbeabletomonitortheintersectiononcearoundabout is installed? Therearea lotofcarsthattravelthroughthatintersectioninthemorningsandbecauseroundaboutsonlycauseyoutoslowdownandbutnottostopyoucancreateavarietyofcircumstances thatcouldcausesafety issues for our kids especially at this intersection.Threeofthecornershavelargewallsthatcancreateablindspotforacrosswalkthatissetbackandrememberthereisonlyonecrossingguard.Thinkofthesevariousscenarios’:Peoplewhoaretryingtogettowork,sometimeslate,tothegym,toOCTaylor,studentsgettingtoCHHSorotherschools,talkingoncellphonesandonandon,allcruisingthroughanintersectionwhichnowbecomesa4waynightmareforacrossingguardorguards.Noneofthempresentagreatvisionforourkid’ssafetythatwilltravelthatpath.Ifyouhaveanyquestionsastothesafetyissueallyouhavetodoisask thecurrentcrossingguardwho thekidscallMr.Smiley.HebelievesthatthiswillbeamajorsafetyissuewiththekidsandplanstoresignifoneisinstalledThinkofthissafetyissue,theideaforaroundaboutistokeepcarsflowing and suddenly a crossing guard stops traffic at one of the crosswalks and the first car in line stops.
