Brookings-Harbor saw an increase in the number of visitors to the area. Just at the Chamber of Commerce, visitors to the center numbered near 100 phone calls and personal inquires daily. It seems to me, more people were at stores, parks, hotels and on our beaches than last year. My observations are somewhat substantiated with the new businesses such as O’Reilly Auto Store, the re-opening of the Brook- ings Inn & Resort, Humane Society’s Thrift Store, Goodwill Industries, and Dollar General. Even our own Brook- ings-Harbor Chamber of Commerce saw a jump in membership that con- tinues to grow. Indeed, the Brook- ings-Harbor economy seemed im- proved, which falls in line with Ore- gon’s overall economic and tourism improvement. Economic and tourism is trending upward in Oregon for this year. On the Wild Rivers Coast from October 2013 to January 2014, travelers to Oregon increased 10.7 per cent. Our number one tourist numbers to Ore- gon were from Canada, followed by Japan, Australia, United Kingdom and Germany. The number one visitor stop in our area is Oregon’s beautiful Pacific Ocean and pristine beach- front. Campgrounds, RV Parks and Hotels saw an increase in their reve- nues. This is good news. Employ- ment numbers are trending upward. This is good news too. If you visit a store, hotel, shop, or any business establishment, take a moment to thank the manager, owner or even the employees for investing in our area. Without their presence, Brookings-Harbor would be quite a different place. We need more business venture to keep our economy healthy. As we move out of summer and into

fall, I want to reflect a bit on what a

busy summer 2014 Brookings experi-

enced. Brookings-Harbor saw an

increase in the number of visitors to

the area. Just at the Chamber of

Commerce, visitors to the center

numbered near 100 phone calls and

personal inquires daily. It seems to

me, more people were at stores,

parks, hotels and on our beaches

than last year. My observations are

somewhat substantiated with the

new businesses such as O’Reilly Auto

Store, the re-opening of the Brook-

ings Inn & Resort, Humane Society’s

Thrift Store, Goodwill Industries, and

Dollar General. Even our own Brook-

ings-Harbor Chamber of Commerce

saw a jump in membership that con-

tinues to grow. Indeed, the Brook-

ings-Harbor economy seemed im-

proved, which falls in line with Ore-

gon’s overall economic and tourism

improvement.

Economic and tourism is trending

upward in Oregon for this year. On

the Wild Rivers Coast from October

2013 to January 2014, travelers to

Oregon increased 10.7 per cent. Our

number one tourist numbers to Ore-

gon were from Canada, followed by

Japan, Australia, United Kingdom and

Germany. The number one visitor

stop in our area is Oregon’s beautiful

Pacific Ocean and pristine beach-

front. Campgrounds, RV Parks and

Hotels saw an increase in their reve-

nues. This is good news. Employ-

ment numbers are trending upward.

This is good news too.

If you visit a store, hotel, shop, or

any business establishment, take a

moment to thank the manager,

owner or even the employees for

investing in our area. Without their

presence, Brookings-Harbor would

be quite a different place. We need

more business venture to keep our

economy healthy. Strong businesses

translate to more jobs, more resi-

dents and a stronger economic base.

Sonia Graham, Community Relations Specialist from Sea View Senior Living Community, spoke at the September 11th Business Forum about creating a consistently excellent Customer Experience. The process includes creating a customer experience map; mapping out the entire customer experience addressing all five senses: hearing, feeling, smelling, seeing, and tasting. It is a of following a potential customer from the moment they see or hear about your business to being a customer. Each step should be considered and sub-ject to change to provide the best experience for your client or customer. This process includes your first interaction with the customer through the receipt of the product or service.

The Chamber of Commerce email system is temporarily down and is ex-pected to be restored at latest Thursday, October 16th. The Chamber has created a temporary email [email protected] to email time sensitive information and to receive your emails temporarily.

If you have emailed the Chamber on or after October 10th we may not have received your email. Please resend all information from that date forward to the temporary email. You will be notified when the email system is operating. You patience and understanding is appreciated.

I want to personally thank our Chamber Directors for all the hard work each of them

do to support our members. The Chamber continues to offer monthly Forums, mix-

ers and other frequent contact opportunities that bring us together. We are plan-

ning something special for our veterans, whose organizations are the most active in

our state. On our immediate schedule is the New Year’s Gala/Auction Dinner. This

event will occur December 31st. Do not forget about our Business Outlook Confer-

ence that we will host in Brookings tentatively scheduled for January 16th, giving our

local businesses a great opportunity to learn about economic trends and network

with other businesses.

Our Chamber has a new web site and I encourage everyone to take advantage of its

new and exciting features. Finally, if you engage anyone in our community in con-

versation, ask them if they are a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Being a

member of our Chamber just makes common sense for any business owner wanting

to connect to our community.

In addition to the ongoing growth of the new website the Chamber has numerous opportunities to advertise and showcase it’s members.

The Eye Center of Brookings welcomed the com-munity to visit their new facility at the August 22nd Chamber Mixer & Ribbon Cutting located at 937 K Chetco Avenue in Brookings.

Co-hosting the event was Barron’s Home Furnish-ings, providing comfortable outdoor seating for guests.

EYE CENTER OF BROOKINGS STAFF: Dr. Douglas Walker, who had received his doctor-ate from Pacific University College of Optometry in 1999; Dr. Walker has received impressive awards and honors, and has a long history of ac-tively supporting local efforts. Dr. John Rush, a longtime resident of Curry County served on vari-ous Optometric Boards and is the Vice-President of American Eye Instruments, Inc, and in active in county-wide efforts. Karl Henne is the Certified Optician for Curry Eye Centers, a graduate of Valley College joining the team in 1986. Colee Ramirez is the Eye Technician for the Center. Kalina Clewell handles optical sales and repairs.

The Chamber President/CEO met with the new organizers of the Amgen People’s Coast Classic to discuss plans for the 2015 ride finale in Brookings. The Amgen People’s Coast Classic offers 2-6 days of cycling the beautiful Oregon coast with up to 363 miles benefiting the Arthritis Foundation.

This year riders ended their journey September 12th at the Beautiful Azalea Park where they recuperated and prepared for a long drive home.

It was confirmed the Amgen People’s Coast Classic riders will spend the night in Brookings as part of their finale. The Chamber will provide more information as it become available; watch for information on how your business may become in-volved.

A full page flyer or advertisement is only $35 per insert. Digi-tal copy of the flyer is required in a jpg and pdf format. Newsletters are posted on Chamber social networks, on the Chamber website, and archived on the website for ongoing viewing.

Relocation Packet Inserts: With hundreds of relocation requests each year by potential resi-dents the Chamber emails and/or mails packets of information to assist with finalizing their decision to move or to assist with their move. We will include your brochure in these mailing for .50 per brochure to offset the cost of the additional postage. You provide the Chamber with 100 or more pieces with a check for the costs and every time a relocation packet is sent your information is included. As of January 2015 you will automatically be included on the Chamber newsletter list of supporting businesses, and your brochure will be included in the email relocation packets (you must provide an electronic pdf version of your brochure).

Cooperative Magazine Advertisements: The Chamber negotiates significant discounts with major magazines relevant to business members. With the negotiation the Chamber often re-duces a one or two page option by $500-$6,000 and provides members the opportunity to ad-vertise on a large scale at minimal rates. These cooperative advertisements keep Brookings and Harbor on the minds of our ideal visitors and potential residents. The Chamber is currently working with Travel West +Life Magazine with ad spaces of 3.75”wide x 2.5”tall for only $200. Travel West prints and distributes over 200,000 magazines and has an average of 8 million digi-tal views. Meet Our Visitors From Near & Far

First Time To The United States This group of travelers were a lot of fun for the Brookings-Harbor Chamber of Com-merce staff. This was their first time visiting Brookings but it was also their first time in the United States. They all met while har-vesting produce in Paris. The two gentlemen in the photograph are from Paris, France and the two ladies are from Quebec, Canada.

They were eager to kayak the Chetco River and visit out local beaches. The Chamber staff referred these travelers to Chamber members who provide kayaking related ser-vices.

When asked how long they would be in town they happily explained that they didn’t have a schedule, that it depended on how much there was to do in the area. After filling them up with information, brochures, and answering their questions they left to check into a local campground. Their ultimate goal was to explore the coast and eventually make their way to San Francisco; a place they had heard so much about.

Love Story In Brookings This couple has been vacationing in Brook-ings for over a decade. When Visiting the Brookings-Harbor Chamber they shared their love story and were happy to have their photo taken. They explained that they stop by the Chamber most every time they come to Brookings to pick up information about local events and are serious about moving to the area.

The couple was interested in local events hap-pening while they were in town, real estate, churches, banks, fishing, and shopping. Chamber staff provided the couple with the Chamber Business Directory & Profile, Relocation Packet, Annual Calendar of Events, and flyers of the weekends events. Af-ter a lengthy visit at the Chamber the couple planned to enjoy lunch at one of the re-ferred Chamber member restaurants, they planned to stop by Flora Pacifica, drive through the beautiful Salmon Run Golf Course, and possibly look at houses.

Watching The Salmon Run A group of four cyclists stopped by the Brookings-Harbor Chamber Visitor Center to get information on fishing and watching Salmon run. This foursome were hoping to get information to watch the salmon run before they continue their journey south. Chamber staff provided a fishing map, fishing guide, fishing regulations, and a Chamber Business Directory, and referral to Chamber members who offer fish-ing services and products.

How do I decide if a business idea is likely to be successful?

While there are no guarantees any startup business will be successful, a good first step to determine if an idea makes sense before proceeding with an investment of time and re-sources is to do a venture feasibility study. A venture feasibility study analyzes an idea from several perspectives: market opportunity, competition, resources available, re-source gaps, financial viability, operational issues, intellectual property rights, develop-ment timeline and technology needs. Consider a venture feasibility study as a start on a business plan if the idea looks profitable.

Determining the market opportunity is based on reasonable market research both pri-mary and secondary. Primary market research consists of interviewing or surveying po-tential customers on their preferences and ability to purchase. Secondary market re-search consists of gathering information that is already available regarding the target cus-tomer group such as demographic data available through the U. S. Census Bureau at www.census.gov. Are there enough customers willing to buy your products, often enough, at a profitable price that your business can pay all expenses and provide a de-cent living wage to owners? If not, the business idea is not feasible.

Many people who want to start a business believe they will be able to get grants or loans to help them finance the venture. Often this is not true. Part of a venture feasibility study is to look at what financial resources are already available in personal bank ac-counts, equity in a home, life insurance, family and friends or from selling assets. Per-sonal credit ratings and collateral are also important. Lenders make decisions based on customer ability to repay the loan. A major cause of business failure is not having enough cash available to cover all startup costs and operate for at least a year. Ask yourself, “Am I willing to risk what I own to go into this business because the potential rewards are greater than the risks?”

A good first step in the feasibility determination is a SWOT analysis (strengths, weak-nesses, opportunities and threats). Look honestly at all the pros and cons for this type of business venture. Analyze ways to overcome weaknesses and threats. The local Small Business Development Center office is a resource that can assist with the venture feasibility process. Outdoor Writers Association of California Conference The Outdoor Writers Association of California held their conference at the Lucky 7 Casino September 13th-15th. Writers separated into their preferred groups to ex-plore areas of the America’s Wild Rivers Coast on the 15th. Tidewind Sportfishing & Charters provided our guests a fishing excursion and the Best Western Beachfront Inn provided additional rooms for OWAC guests to stay after the conference to fur-ther experience the wonderful outdoors Brookings has to offer. Additional support was provided by AtRivers Edge RV Resort, Flora Pacifica, and the Best Western Beachfront Inn.

Writers, radio and television personalities, and outdoorsman were excited about their great adventure in the Wild Rivers Coast.
