CHEERS NY Getting Bigger and Better by the Day!

cheers ny

CHEERS NY, a first-of-its-kind craft beverage festival, will kick off on Octo-ber 3rd and 4th in Brooklyn. The festi-

val is produced by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the State of New York through its Empire State Develop-ment Corporation and Taste NY. This rep-resents the first time the State has partnered with a downstate Chamber to host an event of this capacity. The Brooklyn Chamber’s host partner will be Industry City, a bastion of small-scale, high-quality manufacturing in Sunset Park.

CHEERS NY will bring together makers with consumers to celebrate the best of the State’s vineyards, breweries, orchards and farmsteads. The weekend-long festival will present the entire array of New York State-made craft beverages – beer, wine, cider and spirits – with an emphasis on promoting New York State and Brooklyn as prime des-tinations for tourists interested in wine trails and brewery and distillery tours. The Brook-lyn Chamber will also be creating original content to assist tourists in experiencing all that Brooklyn’s local beverage makers have

to offer. “CHEERS NY will be an event unlike any

Brooklyn has ever seen, full of amazing drinks and food and great music,” said Brooklyn Chamber President & CEO Carlo A. Scis-sura. “New York State and Brooklyn have so much to offer, in terms of high-quality craft beverages and food, that there’s no way any attendee will be disappointed. Thank you to ESD and Taste NY – it’s an honor to be selected by the state as the only chamber of commerce to produce a large-scale down-state event, right here in Brooklyn – and we look forward to CHEERS NY’s longevity as an annual tradition in the borough.”

“The Brooklyn Chamber consistently brings the very best to Brooklyn, and this event will certainly satisfy the borough’s residents and beyond,” said Brooklyn Cham-ber Board Chair Denise Arbesu. “We are so grateful to have been chosen by the State to

showcase the incredible food and beverage manufactures that stem from the great state of New York. Brooklyn has it all and there’s no better place in the world to have a festival of this magnitude.”

“New York’s craft beverage industry is big business,” said Empire State Development President, CEO & Commissioner Howard Zemsky. “The Craft Beverage Industry Grant Program will provide support to local busi-nesses, helping to create jobs, and bring craft beverage enthusiasts together for a weekend-long celebration to support the local market-place.”

CHEERS NY will build on the incredible success New York State’s craft beverage in-dustry has recently experienced. According to Empire State Development, the craft beer sector grew by 59 percent from 2013 to 2014, has a statewide economic impact estimated at $3.5 billion, and currently accounts for 6,552 direct industry jobs while supporting another 4,814 jobs in related industries. Not to be outdone, the New York State grape, grape juice and wine industry generates more than $4.8 billion in annual economic

benefits, based on statistics from the New York Wine & Grape Foundation. The distill-ery industry has also surged in the last year, with the number of farm distilleries increas-ing by more than 25 percent, from 62 to 78, State reports said.

Because no wine or beer is complete with-out a cheese or meat, CHEERS NY will also include a Brooklyn Eats Marketplace, featur-ing incredible food options from many of the borough’s premier manufacturers, and other high quality items, such as giftware, crafts and tabletop items.

The Brooklyn Chamber expects to show-case over 100 beverage and food vendors at CHEERS NY, as well as attract a crowd of over 5,000 people in its first production year.

“I could think of no better way to kick off the best of what New York has to offer than raising a glass to New York’s craft beverage industry at the inaugural CHEERS NY cel-ebration,” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams. “I commend the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and Empire State

Development for supporting this growing industry by ensuring that tourists and locals alike can discover the best they have to offer right here in Brooklyn.”

“We are pleased to partner with the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce to support CHEERS NY,” said Patrick MacKrell, Presi-dent and CEO of NYBDC. “It is a great op-portunity to showcase the local and regional food and beverage manufacturers that help to create energy and excitement around a growing industry in New York State. It is also important to highlight many of the re-sources available to these businesses to pro-mote their success and provide many of the tools necessary to start, sustain and grow their business.”

“The resurgence of beverage and food man-ufacturing here in the city and across the state in recent years is cause for celebration,” said Andrew Kimball, CEO of Industry City, the site of CHEERS NY and part of the culinary innovation cluster emerging in Sunset Park. “CHEERS NY gives New Yorkers and tourists alike an opportunity to discover the wide range

of beers, wines, ciders and spirits being made here and in doing so, supports the continued growth of this important sector.”

“Greenwich Street Equities is excited to be the joint major sponsor for both the CHEERS NY and the Brooklyn Eats event,” said Alec Sh-tromandel, President of Greenwich Street Eq-uities. “Both Brooklyn artisanal culinary offer-ings and the New York State craft brewers and wineries play an integral role in our hospitality offering at the Union Hotel, and our Brooklyn projects that are slated to open in 2016, namely Boerum Hill’s Baltic Huis and the Gowanus Inn & Yard.”

A special ticket price of $50 is available un-til September 27th. Tickets include a souvenir tasting glass; samplings from over 50 regional wineries, distilleries and breweries; and access to a beer hall and courtyard, outdoor games, and the Brooklyn Eats Marketplace. Patrons interested in visiting only the Brooklyn Eats Marketplace can purchase tickets for $10 and have access to Brooklyn-Made food samplings and the outdoor courtyard.

Chamber Co-Hosts Borough-Wide Health

Care Conference

healTh haPPenIng

On July 16, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and its Health Care Com-mittee partnered with St. Joseph’s Col-

lege and The Brooklyn Hospital Center to host Health Happening, a networking event that brought together health care industry stakeholders in Brooklyn to address the needs of businesses and promote programs that can help improve the health of residents.

Health Happening provided attendees with a chance to network, discuss develop-ments across the various sectors of the Brook-lyn health care landscape, and learn about how partnering with the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, St. Joseph’s College and The Brooklyn Hospital Center can generate new opportunities for healthcare agencies and firms.

Brooklyn radio and fitness personality An-gela Yee served as the featured speaker at the event.

The mission of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce’s Health Care Committee is to promote programs and interventions that help improve the health and wellness of Brooklyn residents through effective strate-gies, advocacy, education and support. The Committee is dedicated to maximizing rep-resentation of the Chamber’s health related businesses and organizations.

“Health care is one of the largest and most

significant industries in Brooklyn, and it will only expand as our borough continues to flourish,” said Carlo A. Scissura, President & CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. “The Chamber created the Health Care Com-mittee, and organizes events like Health Hap-pening, to help the sector grow and pro-vide the highest quality service to residents. Healthy Brooklynites mean healthy Brooklyn businesses, which equate to a healthy Brook-lyn overall, and that’s what the Chamber is all about.”

“Health care is one of the fastest-growing sectors of the economy, and SJC has a tradi-tion of excellence in preparing students for careers in the industry,” said Dr. Jill Reh-mann, interim executive dean, SJC Brooklyn. “As always, it’s a pleasure to partner with our friends at the Brooklyn Chamber of Com-merce to showcase our programs and to pro-vide leaders in the field with an opportunity to meet and network.”

“The Brooklyn Hospital Center is a proud member of the Brooklyn Chamber of Com-merce Health Care Committee and recog-nizes the contributions of Ms. Angela Yee to the borough of Brooklyn,” said Leroy R. Charles, Vice President of External Affairs at The Brooklyn Hospital Center.

Changing Jobs? Know Your Options

memBer suBmIssIon

There are many new challenges to face if you happen to be changing jobs or retir-ing – not the least of which is the decision

of what to do with the retirement funds that have accumulated in your 401(k) and other retirement plans over the years of service with your employers. These decisions may have a significant impact on your future financial se-curity in retirement.

Option 1) Your employer hands you a check for the amount in your retirement plan. This may look like a bonanza, but selecting this option could be a mistake. First, your em-ployer is required to withhold 20 percent from your lump sum distribution, so you will only receive 80 percent. Second, if you are younger than 59 and a half, you may be subject to a 10 percent additional federal income tax penalty for early withdrawal. Third, you are liable for paying income taxes on the full amount—if you fail to rollover the full amount of your funds, including the 20 percent that was with-

held, into an IRA within 60 days.Option 2) Leave the money with your old

employer. If you have more than $5,000 in your former employer’s retirement plan, you can usually leave the money where it is (Check with your employer). The advantage of doing this is that it relieves you of making a decision for the time being while maintaining the tax deferral of your assets. The downside is that you are limited to the investment choices of-fered by your ex-employer—or even fewer choices, since some companies have addi-tional restrictions for non-active employees. Additional disadvantages are that you cannot make new contributions to your account.

Option 3) Move your retirement money to your new employer. This option only works if you are moving to another job. Even then, your new employer may not accept rollovers from a previous plan or may impose a wait-ing period. Also, the investment options of-fered by your new employer may not be as

YESTERDAY

Need something printed “like yesterday”?No problem. We got you covered.

To hire or not to hire…that is the question

memBer suBmIssIon

If your business has employees, than you realize a big part of your company’s suc-cess depends on the success that your

employees have representing you and your business. Many of us have had the experi-ence of hiring people only to find out that it was a bad decision. These bad decisions can, and do, ultimately lead to a decrease in productivity, employee comradery, at-tendance, punctuality and client satisfac-tion, not to mention the cost of rehiring and retraining a replacement (employee turnover). The bottom line is that your bottom line will shrink due to hiring mis-takes!

The question is how do you develop a consistent hiring practice to help ensure that your investment in human capital will give you a good return on that in-vestment (ROI)? Although a 100 percent success rate in the hiring process can’t be guaranteed (after all we are talking about humans), having a comprehensive and compliant pre-employment due diligence program in place will certainly better your odds by a great deal.

These programs can be developed, streamlined, automated, compliant and cost effective for businesses of any size by an experienced Employment Due Dili-

gence company. Think of the pre-employment due dili-

gence portion of the selection and hiring process as putting the pieces of a puzzle together. This method gives the employer an opportunity to view the whole picture before deciding whether to buy it or not.

This whole due diligence process should only take a few days, but will help ensure that your investment will produce an em-ployee who will be a productive and loyal member of your staff for years to come.

Dan Stevens is President of DDS - Em-ployee Screening Services (www.employee-screening.com, 718-234-0005).

Here are a few basic tips on how it’s done.

Be as specific as possible about the minimum job requirements when you place or post an ad. Learn correct interview techniques to get the most information from an applicant in a relaxed atmosphere. Remember, most of the time you will see them at their best (trying to impress you) before they get the job! If you have any doubt about their positive impact on your business at this point, elimi-nate them from any further investment.

Never trust your “gut feeling” alone to make a hiring decision. More times than not, you’ll be wrong! I know some of you are shaking your head up and down right now.

Have a separate compliant authorization form signed by the applicant prior to, or on the day of, the first interview. This will allow time (a few days) for your due diligence service provider to gather and verify all pertinent information that will help your final decision. You can also include a personality assessment (for specific job fitness) as well as drug/alcohol testing (if you choose to take advan-tage of these services).

Once the process is complete, you will have modified the average of five to eight initial candi-dates per job position to one to three. You can then have each of the remaining candidates go through specific skill testing or other mandatory duties that will be required of them on a daily basis. This may also give the opportunity to see how the candidate interacts with other employees, clients, etc. Now you can make your final hiring decision with confidence.

How Brooklyn Neighborhoods Got Their Names

reD hook, beD-stuy, sheePsheAD bAy, AnD Dyker heiGhts

Red HookThe Dutch settled Red Hook in 1636, nam-

ing the village Roode Hoek. In Dutch, “roode” means “red,” referring to the red clay soil of the area. And “hoek” means “point” or “cor-ner” — the actual “hoek” they were referring to was a point on an island that stuck out into the Upper New York Bay, at present Dikeman Street west of Ferris Street. When the area was incorporated into the City of Brooklyn in the 1830s, the name Roode Hoek was Anglicized.(Pictured Above)

It’s no secret that Brooklyn boasts a rich history, going back to when the land was settled by the Dutch in the 1600s. That history is most evident in the current names of Brooklyn neighborhoods, many of which have roots back to those early Dutch settlers. Bedford-Stuyvesant, Red Hook, Sheepshead Bay, and Dyker Heights — keep reading for the fascinating stories of how these Brooklyn neighborhoods got their

names.

BedfoRd-StuyveSantBedford-Stuyvesant – commonly known

as Bed-Stuy – is a combination of names that refer to the neighborhood’s history. Way back in the 17th century, the area was known as Stuyvesant Heights, named after the Dutch settler and New Netherland governor Peter

Stuyvesant. Stuyvesant Heights was part of a larger farming hamlet known as Bedford, also a Dutch-given name.

When the area was incorporated into the Town of Brooklyn in 1800, it was simply known as Bedford. In the 1880s and 1890s, Stuyvesant Heights emerged as a distinct, wealthy neigh-borhood within Bedford — the area, which still retains much of its impressive architecture, is still called Stuyvesant Heights to this day. It seems as if the two names were combined in the last decades of the 19th century, when transportation to the neighborhood increased, and Bedford–Stuyvesant emerged as a working and middle-class community for those work-

ing in Downtown Brooklyn and Manhattan.

SHeepSHead BayThe name of Sheepshead Bay applies to

both the actual bay separating the mainland of Brooklyn from the eastern portion of Coney Is-land as well as the neighborhood to the north. “Sheepshead” comes from the sheepshead fish, once commonly found in the bay’s waters.

Today, it’s rare to spot the sheepshead, although they are caught in the bay every once in a while. For a long time this land was swampy and not considered for development, but homesteads started moving in around the

saitta house in Dyker heights | via Wikipedia

1870s and the neighborhood continued to ex-pand.

dykeR HeigHtSThe Dutch settled Dyker Heights in 1657,

calling the neighborhood New Utrecht. Un-der the Dutch, the land remained practically untouched, as the area was too hilly for farm-ing. It wasn’t until the mid-19th century that development slowly started. Real estate tycoon Frederick Johnson hoped to transform the land into an upscale residential enclave. After his death in 1893, his son, Walter Loveridge Johnson, took over the real estate business.

Johnson set up a development by the name of “Dyker Heights” — he got the name from the Dyker Meadow and Beach, which his de-velopment overlooked (“Dyker” comes from the Van Dykes family, one of the early Dutch settlers). Once named, Johnson built a resi-dential community of suburban-style, free-standing homes, many of which still stand in the neighborhood.

Sometimes life calls for pie, especially during fall in New York City. Luckily for Brook-lynites, the borough is a great place to indulge. Many of New York’s best pie shops are right here in Kings County. Some have been around for years; others are the result of a more recent pie renaissance. Whether you’re craving banana cream or mixed berry, these five stellar pie shops will make your dessert dreams come true.

daily, they’ll have your favorite waiting if you give them a 24-hour notice. And if you’re interested in creating these goodies at home, sign up for one of their popular pie-making classes.

tHe Blue Stove (Williamsburg)

If you’re unsure about what to do this weekend, head to The Blue Stove and order as much pie as possible. This homey Williams-burg bakery is named after the eponymous stove that owner Rachel McBride inherited from her grandmother. The Blue Stove serves an ever-changing rotation of handmade des-serts made from seasonal ingredients. Their cherry pie will change your life.

duB pieS (Windsor terrace)

DUB Pies opened in 2003 and was the first bakery to bring authentic New Zealand-Australian meat pies to New York City. Their Windsor Terrace shop churns out savory cre-ations filled with mixtures like chunky steak,

fouR & twenty BlaCkBiRdS(Gowanus)

Opened by Emily and Melissa Elsen, two sisters from rural South Dakota, Four & Twenty Blackbirds has been serving up hand-made pies in Gowanus since 2010. Their sea-sonally inspired treats quickly gained a loyal following. Their pies are made from local and organic ingredients and often come in unex-pected flavors, such as chocolate julep (mint, bourbon and chocolate). Can’t decide what to order? The black bottom oat pie is a cult favorite.

This friendly Red Hook spot serves Stump-

mushrooms and onions, and old-school steak and kidney. Insider tip: Don’t forget to pick up a miniature cherry rhubarb pie for dessert. If you can’t make it to their Brooklyn outpost, keep your eyes peeled for their rov-ing Pie Truck.

They didn’t win, but we’re still obsessed with their pies. The chocolate bourbon and classic pumpkin never disap-point.

Pie Corps is a Greenpoint insti-tution. Their daily offerings range from sweet pies, to savory pot pies, to handheld “pie pops.” Although the menu changes

Keeping Brooklyn healthy is our mission. That’s why The Brooklyn Hospital Center has teamed up with community health care providers, physicians, civic leaders and legislators to design a dynamic new system that will transform healthcare for more than a million residents of northern and central Brooklyn.

More access to care. Fewer hospitalizations. We are working to strengthen existing physician networks and nurture new ones to improve access to healthcare. Our outpatient services will be expanded, reducing the use of emergency departments while providing better care to our patients and their families. And, Brooklyn residents

will experience better access to high quality inpatient care with improved facilities, new equipment and technology upgrades.

Keeping Brooklyn healthier. To help patients further improve their health and avoid the need for treatment, we’ll also broaden our education, outreach and prevention programs.

Stay tuned for more exciting details as we move toward realizing our vision of creating a higher quality, more efficient healthcare system for everyone in our Brooklyn community. For more information, visit: tbh.org/community update

JOBsextensive as you want. The benefit is that you maintain your assets’ tax deferral and benefit from the convenience of having your assets in one place.

Option 4) Put the money into a traditional IRA Rollover. By having your former employ-er’s retirement plan pay the IRA custodian di-rectly, you avoid the 20 percent withholding or any penalties. There are numerous benefits to your own IRA Rollover:

• A potentially wider choice of investment opportunities—you can select the stocks, bonds, mutual funds or other investments that are right for you.

• The ability to withdraw without penalty for some purposes. Withdrawals can be made without penalty by taking a series of substan-tially equal periodic payments for at least five years or until after you reach age 59 and a half. Withdrawals are subject to normal income tax treatment and may be subject to an additional 10 percent federal income tax penalty. Thus, if you are planning to retire before you reach age 59 and a half, this method can enable you to dip into your IRA Rollover without pen-alty. Please note, there may be other eligible retirement plans which can accept funds.
