BROOKLYN
CHEERS NY, a first-of-its-kind craft bev-erage festival, was held on October 3rd and 4th at Industry City in Sunset Park. The festival was produced by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the State of New York and Governor Andrew Cuomo through the Empire State Develop-ment Corporation and Taste NY.
At the event, makers were brought to-gether with consumers to celebrate the very best of New York State-made craft beverages beer, wine, cider and spirits. In total, over 40 beverage manufacturers were showcased to nearly 2,000 attendees. CHEERS NY also promoted the State and Brooklyn as prime destinations for tourists interested in wine trails and brewery and distillery tours.
Because no wine or beer is complete with-out a cheese or meat, the festival included a Brooklyn Eats Marketplace, featuring rough-ly 30 incredible food options from many of the boroughs premier manufacturers.

On September 16th, the Brooklyn Cham-ber of Commerce and Airbnb an-nounced a first-of-its kind partnership program geared towards promoting tourism across the borough. The Neighborhood Tour-ism Fellowship will be Airbnbs first attempt at systematically connecting its hosts with lo-cal businesses in an effort to improve its user experience. If successful, the company plans to replicate the program globally.
In addition to organizing events to intro-duce hosts to local business owners, Airbnb will fund a Chamber community outreach organizer to meet with Brooklyn businesses one-on-one and educate them on opportuni-ties to get in front of Airbnbs users.
The announcement was made during the launch event of the newly redesigned Ex-ploreBK.com website, Brooklyns dedicated tourism website. The new ExploreBK.com assists visitors in finding Brooklyns best din-ing, events, shopping, attractions, and more, while providing local businesses and attrac-tions with an easy-to-use tool to promote themselves. It will also serve as the home of
a series of borough-wide alcohol trail maps, helping visitors sample the best wines, beers, and spirits in Brooklyn. The new site will al-low people to book hotel rooms for their next trip through a partnership with Booking.com, as well.
Brooklyn has long been a major tourism destination due in large part to the amaz-ing people that live here and the great busi-nesses that surround them and the new Ex-ploreBK.com will make visiting the worlds greatest borough easier and more enjoyable than ever, said Carlo A. Scissura, President and CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Com-merce. This partnership with Airbnb is an exciting opportunity for us to continue pro-moting the best that Brooklyn has to offer, while also greatly improving the experiences of visitors. Were eager to begin working with Airbnb on this terrific program, which we hope will serve as a model for how the com-pany can improve community engagement globally.
Both residents and travelers from across the globe will have an even greater experi-
ence exploring Brooklyn with the upgraded ExploreBK.com, said Brooklyn Chamber Board Chair Denise Arbesu. From hidden gems to the boroughs most popular attrac-tions, the new ExploreBK.com has it all. The Brooklyn Chamber is proud to have Brook-lyns greatest travel tool and proud to begin this incredible partnership with Airbnb -- both are sure to take Brooklyn tourism to the next level.
Were proud to be working together with the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce to launch this program and further the tremendous economic impact of tourism throughout the diverse neighborhoods of this borough, said Airbnb Global Head of Civic Partnerships, Molly Turner. In ad-dition to becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination, Brooklyn is home to a vibrant middle-class community facing ris-ing costs of living. Airbnb is committed to fostering the growth of tourism in a way that benefits both small business owners and the middle class families who depend on home-sharing to make it affordable for them to live

ers to our city with the line: Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearn-ing to breathe free. That is the energy with which Brooklyn welcomes new visitors to our beautiful borough, said Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams. I am excited to work with the Brooklyn Chamber of Com-merce and Airbnb to further my mission of connecting tourists with all of the one-of-a-kind opportunities to enjoy everything Brooklyn has to offer, ensuring the popular-ity of our brand translates into prosperity for all Brooklynites.
Almost one third of all Airbnb visitors to NYC stay in Brooklyn, and 45 percent spend at least some time in the borough. In 2014, Airbnb generated $100 million in economic activity in Brooklyn. In Bed-Stuy alone, trav-elers generated $30 million in direct spending in the neighborhood $10.2 million to local hosts and $19.8 million to local businesses in the neighborhood.

The Annual Meeting an event that is held by all non-profits to elect their officers and directors has always been a signature event of the Chambers. The event begins with a trade show, held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., featuring over 30 busi-nesses seeking to strengthen connections to the membership base. Long lasting and pro-ductive business partnerships often develop from these connections, and all members are encouraged to attend to enhance their ties to

ing President Katepalli Sreenivasan. I am especially pleased that we can have a repre-sentative of this administration speak on our campus, because just as the Mayor has made the creation of a City that is more livable and for all its citizens, we at Poly have stressed the importance of providing a high quality STEM education to all students.
Whether helping to fuel the innovation economy or facilitating improvements in the public realm, Deputy Mayor Glen pro-vides the visionary thinking needed to help Downtown Brooklyn chart its way forward as a thriving central business district, said Tucker Reed, President of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership. Were thrilled to welcome the Deputy Mayor to the Brooklyn Newsmakers series and look forward to our continued work with the de Blasio Admin-istration to make our neighborhood a true 24/7 destination.

Gregory Solometo never imagined that caring for his grandmother would change his life, but it did. After hiring and firing four caregivers, he
felt hopeless. Finding competent, trustwor-thy home health aides proved almost impossi-ble. After an arduous struggle, Mr. Solometo finally found Lynn, an aide equipped to han-dle his grandmothers worsening Alzheimers with skill, patience and compassion. Solom-eto immediately recognized a need for quality home health care services. He left his steady job at a large global finance firm and founded New York City-based Alliance Homecare, which caters to clients who demand an ex-traordinary level of trust and quality of care.
Alliance Homecare is leading the Con-cierge Care concept, offering high-end, comprehensive services for those who dont care to struggle within the constraints and inadequacies of the current system. Clients pay privately or via long-term care insurance for the care they deserve. Concierge Care clients benefit from the attention of a multi-disciplinary team of Geriatric Care Managers (GCMs), registered nurses, home health aides,
companions and social workers. GCMs over-see a clients entire case, make frequent home visits and keep their phones active 24 hours per day. Alliance has also created an extensive web of carefully selected referrals, including physical therapists, nutritionists and physi-cians, all who are readily able to visit clients in their home. Beyond health, Alliance provides referrals to seasoned elder care attorneys, massage therapists, handymen, hairdressers and home modification consultants, to name a few. There is even a vetted list of on-call dog walkers!
Alliance has set the bar high for all its care-givers. Many registered nurses have a back-ground in intensive care from top hospitals throughout the northeast. These nurses may be able to detect subtle clues that lead to early intervention and better patient outcomes. Having a quality caregiver in the home may save lives. Director of patient services, Mi-chele Teter, is a long-standing veteran of the ICU herself and hires only the best. This dis-cretion in hiring caregivers is an attempt to raise the standard for home health care. Al-

The Brooklyn Chamber, in partnership with the New York State Department of Labor and Brooklyn College, held the 2nd Annual Brooklyn Bridge to Employment Career Expo on September 16th. Held at the Brooklyn Col-lege Student Center, the career fair focused on the employment needs of Brooklyn businesses.
Employers had the chance to meet with qualified job seekers who were prescreened by the Brooklyn Chambers Good Help staff, while Brooklynites were also connected to hundreds of open positions.
Nearly 80 companies participated in this years expo an increase from 60 last year along with over 650 job seekers.
The Brooklyn Bridge to Employment Career Expo was sponsored by MetroPlus Health Plan and Penda Aiken, Inc.
Connecting our terrific Brooklyn businesses with residents seeking quality employment op-portunities has consistently been a top priority for the Brooklyn Chamber and the Brooklyn Bridge to Employment Career Expo is a major part of accomplishing our goal, said Brooklyn Chamber President & CEO Carlo A. Scissura. With roughly 80 companies and over 650 job seekers in attendance, this event will lead to dozens of filled positions, which will lead to a
stronger, more prosperous Brooklyn. I would like to thank our sponsors, MetroPlus Health Plan and Penda Aiken, and our partners, the Department of Labor and Brooklyn College, for helping to make this expo possible.
Career fairs are a proven tool for job seekers and businesses alike, said Acting Labor Com-missioner Mario J. Musolino. Businesses are able to speak with job seekers who have differ-ent skills and experiences and those job seekers have the opportunity to meet with potential employers from all different industries. The Department of Labor staff is expert at making the connection between the two. I thank the Brooklyn Chamber for their efforts in making this event a success.
I thank the Brooklyn Chamber of Com-merce for organizing a great Brooklyn Bridge to Employment Career Expo, as well as Brooklyn College, MetroPlus Health, Penda Aiken, and all of the great businesses and organizations that participated, said Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams. 1883 was the year the Brooklyn Bridge first opened, connecting Manhattanites to the opportunities and promise of Brooklyn. This career expo is an 1883 moment, connect-ing people with job opportunities that have the promise to transform their lives.

Two jewelers, a handbag designer, potter and a woodworker/furniture maker whose studios are in five Brooklyn neighborhoods will be among 90 exhibitors at the third Amer-ican Fine Craft Show Brooklyn at the Brook-lyn Museum on November 21st and 22nd. Handpicked by Joanna and Richard Roth-bard of American Art Marketing, the shows founders and directors, artisans will fill the regal Beaux-Arts Court with handmade work that celebrates American creativity.
Weve timed the show early enough for holiday shopping but not too close to Hanu-kah and Christmas, so that visitors can also enjoy the magnificent current and long-term exhibitions at the Museum, said Richard Rothbard. A ticket to the craft show includes general admission to the museum.
On the eve of the show, the museum will open Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland, 1861-2008, an exhibition of pic-tures, photographs and objects such as carou-sel animals, representing this icon of American
If you walk into Met Food on Vanderbilt Av-enue in Prospect Heights, youll find a sign advertising not grocery specials, but color-ful guidebooks offering to show you Nev-illes Places, Tanyas Places and Davids Places. Its Intersection | Prospect Heights, the new multidisciplinary public art project using photographs and oral histories to start a conversation on what Prospect Heights means to you and how the rapid change in this one Brooklyn neighbor-hood is impacting its residents. This project of the Prospect Heights Neighborhood De-velopment Council (PHNDC), Brooklyn Public Library, and urbanist studio Buscada is popping up all over Prospect Heights this fall, in local businesses and the Brooklyn Public Librarys Central Branch. Sending participants on a playful scavenger hunt to find all six guides around the neighborhood, the project hopes to help people see the pres-ent in a new way through the experiences of the not-too-distant past.
In recent years, Prospect Heights has seen tremendous physical change, including the clearing of the 22-acre Atlantic Yards site, the

construction of the Barclays Center arena, and the development of much of the neigh-borhoods vacant properties. At the same time, Prospect Heights population has shift-ed significantly in terms of race and income, indicating the displacement of a large num-ber of people.
In a convergence of art, research and advo-
cacy, Intersection | Prospect Heights presents a series of participatory events about the chang-es that have occurred in the neighborhood in the last 15 years. Beginning on October 3, the project will engage current and former resi-dents of Prospect Heights and New York-ers from all neighborhoods with its neigh-borhood guides, popup exhibitions, guided
tours and public conversations. Building on Buscada founder Gabrielle Bendiner-Vianis work in the neighborhood in the early 2000s, the guidebooks use her photographs and oral histories to show neighborhood places through the eyes of residents from over a de-cade ago.
Changes driven by development and re-zoning as experienced by Prospect Heights are now faced by other New York City neighbor-hoods, said Dr. Bendiner-Viani. Valuing ev-eryday experience and peoples stories of their important places can help us have an open con-versation on the forces shaping our city. We hope people will take our tour guides walks, and let themselves laugh, cry and grapple with the experience of what is too often framed as the citys inevitable trajectory.
The project encourages past and present community members to contribute their own reflections on neighborhood places though storytelling cards, the project website, partici-pation in two public Place Conversations at the Brooklyn Public Librarys Central Branch, and by having their stories recorded in an in-terview at the library. Two Brooklyn Chamber Members dedi-cated to improving the lives of young people, the Boy Scouts of America and Mythic Bridge Film Makers, have partnered for an immersive two-day film making work-shop.
Our mission is to prepare kids for life, so partnering with Mythic Bridge was a natural fit for us. The Chamber has been vital in help-ing us develop partnerships with local busi-nesses to deliver career education programs like this one to youth here in Brooklyn, said Justin Rodstrom, Brooklyn Director for the Boy Scouts of America.
The hands-on workshop will help young people tell their own stories and develop new skills. Scouts will learn about film elements like storyboarding, set design, casting, and video editing.
Founded in 2011, Mythic Bridge provides hands-on, narrative filmmaking education to disadvantaged youth in NYC. Co-found-er Gage Cass Woodle had this to say of the workshop, Im excited, we have a sold-out workshop. The Boy Scouts are a great organi-zation, and a great way for us to continue our
mission to create a safe community where youth can discover their creativity and pas-sion through film.
The sold-out partnership event took place Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11th from 9am to 4pm each day, in Down-town Brooklyn. Visit bsa-gnyc.org/proseries or contact Justin Rodstrom at [email protected] to learn more.

Brooklyn, said PHNDC Chair Gib Veconi. By placing exhibits in the context of every-day locations in the neighborhood, the proj-ect challenges viewers to look again at their surroundings and whats important about them. Its been great working with local mer-chants to make this presentation possible, and were excited about the potential to introduce viewers to new businesses as they search out the Intersection guidebooks.
Alliance has trademarked its Grandma Rule which ensures that all patients are treated like family. Every single employee hired by the company must fit this mantra de-veloped by Solometo after his experience with caring for his grandmother. Alliance, found-ed on its principles of integrity, accountability and expertise would surely make grandma proud.

brooklyns Historic Districts:carroll gardens, boerum hill, brooklyn heights, and cobble hill
At some point in the last decade, Brooklyn emerged as a globally recognized icon of cool, but the borough has been around since long before its rebirth as a hipster mecca. Many of Brooklyns trendy neighborhoods were settled by the Dutch in the 17th-century, and Kings County has some of the oldest buildings in the United States. In order to inspire you to check them out, here are four of Brooklyns historic districts, as designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.

in 1973. These days, the small neighborhood is a popular hunting ground for buyers looking to score one of the areas coveted Greek and Itali-anate 19th-century row houses (Michelle Wil-liams recently sold hers for a cool $8.8 million).
Boerum Hill used to be a little more acces-sible. Marketed as economical housing for Manhattan merchants in the 1800s, the his-toric districts rows of houses are concentrated on four long east-west streetsPacific, Dean, Bergen, and Wyckoff. Once youve ogled all of the brownstones, head to The Brooklyn Inn. The iconic 19th-century watering hole features a monumental carved wood bar transplanted from Germany in the 1870s.
BRooKlyn HeiGHtsIts hard not to be charmed by Brooklyn
Heights. Originally settled by Dutch farmers who purchased land from the Canarsie Indi-ans in 1636, the neighborhood is home to rows of well-kept brownstones and pre-Civil War houses. Considered New Yorks first suburb, Brooklyn Heights was transformed by the open-ing of Robert Fultons ferry service in 1814. Once the ferry began shuttling residents to Wall Street, the neighborhood became a popular destination for moneyed Manhattanites. Many of the areas stately houses are the result of this first building boom.
In 1965, the newly-formed Landmarks Pres-ervation Commission designated Brooklyn Heights as New York Citys first historic dis-trict. The Brooklyn Heights Historic District is bounded by Cadman Plaza West (Old Fulton Street) on the north, the Brooklyn-Queens Ex-

CARRoll GARdensNamed after Charles Carroll, the only Ro-
man Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence, Carroll Gardens used to be a working-class Irish neighborhood. In the 19th-century, many of the Irish moved out while first-generation Italians moved in. Designated in 1973, the Carroll Gardens Historic District includes over 160 buildings in a surprisingly small area located between President, Carroll, Smith, and Hoyt streets (the equivalent of two very long city blocks). Majestic gardens are a neighborhood signature. Thanks to the careful planning of Richard Butts, one of the surveyors of the young City of Brooklyn in the 1840s, the districts brownstones feature 33-foot, 5-inch deep front yards.
In the summer, the teeny-tiny historic district becomes a wonderland of lushly planted green-ery. Round out your tour with a visit to G. Es-posito and Sons Pork Store (established in 1922) for a primo Italian sub.
BoeRuM HillNestled between Cobble Hill and Park Slope,
the Boerum Hill Historic District was designat-ed by the Landmarks Preservation Commission
pressway on the west, and Atlantic Avenue on the south.
If youre unsure where to start, 24 Middagh Street is the oldest home in the hood. The 1824 wood frame house is a prime example of the Federal-style architecture that was in vogue in the early 19th-century. A three-minute walk away, youll find 64 Poplar Street, a clapboard house built in 1834 by Walt Whitman and his father.
CoBBle HillCobble Hill is a must-visit for architecture
buffs. When the Dutch arrived in the 1640s, they named the area Cobleshill after a conical-shaped hill at present-day Atlantic Avenue and Court Street. Originally designated in 1969 (it was later expanded) the sprawling Cobble Hill Historic District includes 22 city blocks bor-dered by Atlantic Avenue, Court Street, Degraw Street, and Hicks Street.
Like Brooklyn Heights, its more famous neighbor to the north, Cobble Hill was largely built up in in the decades preceding the Civil War. The neighborhood is particularly well-known for its 19th-century Greek Revival row houses. Youll also find plenty of Gothic Revival churches, Victorian schoolhouses, and Italian-ate architecture on display. While youre there, make sure to check out Verandah Placea pic-turesque little lane comprised of 19th-century mews houses.

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce wraps up the Weekend Walks season with the North Flatbush Fall Fest on Sat-urday, October 17th. As part of an ongoing management agreement, the Chamber and its tourism initiative, Explore Brooklyn, sup-port the North Flatbush Business Improve-ment District (NFBID) in co-producing this years street festival at the 6th Avenue triangle at Flatbush and St. Marks avenues from noon until 4pm.
The North Flatbush Fall Fest hosts arts and crafts and pumpkin decorating, music, danc-ing and other activities, with special treats from local businesses, like Brooklyn Chamber Mem-bers Eladias Kids, Brooklyn Crepe and Juice, HIIT BK and others. Restricting vehicular ac-cess activates the street bed for residents and visitors to enjoy the Park Slope neighborhood from an otherwise unavailable perspective around the 6th Avenue Green Streets triangle. These unique events employ creative ways to highlight local businesses, and neighborhood resources while enjoying food, games and en-tertainment. They foster wonderful opportuni-ties for Brooklynites to gather, see their neigh-borhoods in a new way, and rediscover their community and the local businesses.

Weekend Walks Connect Residents With Commerce
sheepshead summer stroll.
On September 19th and 26th, in Williams-burgs Southside, the Southside Connex Com-munity Festival on Havemeyer Street engaged businesses in planned activities, such as a street soccer tournament, domino tournament, and dance and exercise workshops, thus connect-ing residents with culture and commerce. Ad-
ditionally, the Chamber and Explore Brooklyn have partnered with community groups and merchants in a number of commercial cor-ridors, including Midwood, Brighton Beach, Sheepshead Bay, Boro Park, and Crown Heights, to bring fun-filled, pedestrian-friend-ly, neighborhood focused events.
The NFBID covers Flatbush Avenue from Atlantic Avenue to Plaza Street at Grand Army Plaza, including five traffic triangles at 5th, 6th, 7th, Carlton and 8th avenues. The BID pro-vides support to property owners, businesses, and the community residents with supplemen-tal sanitation, government advocacy, special events and marketing. The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce has prioritized working with businesses all across the borough, including neighborhood based businesses serving Brook-lyn residents.
With the Neighborhood Entrepreneur-ship Project (NEP), the Chamber works on strengthening commercial corridors through direct technical and capacity-building services, such as merchant organizing, place-making, marketing and special events like these Week-end Walks. Each year, the New York City Department of Transportation works with community groups across the City to present Weekend Walks, which aim to be multi-block neighborhood events on commercial streets temporarily closed to vehicles. These events are alternatives to the ubiquitous mass-produced fairs and give local communities opportunities to showcase themselves with a focus on mer-chant engagement and participation.
