secret crush crunchValentine’s Day is the sweetest day of the year, and that calls for a sweet treat! Our favorite recipe is a sweet and salty mix that’s special enough for sharing, and it’s got a secret, too (the main ingredient – popcorn – is a whole grain!)

what you’ll need:

how to make it:

6 cups plain air popped popcorn1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips1 cup dried cherries or cranberries3 cups honey nut oat cereal 1/2 cup salted peanuts*2 Tablespoons red, pink or multicolored sprinkles

1. Spread popcorn out on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

2. Melt chocolate chips, according to package directions. With an adult’s help, pour melted chocolate into a piping bag (or zip-top freezer bag). Snip the end of the bag to make a tiny hole (if using freezer bag, snip corner) and drizzle chocolate all over popcorn.

3. While chocolate is still wet, top popcorn with dried cherries, honey nut cereal, and peanuts. Drizzle again with a little more chocolate and sprinkles.

4. Let chocolate dry. Then, break popcorn up into small clumps and store in a large jar, bag or covered bowl. To serve at parties or give out as Valentines, measure popcorn into Valentine’s Day cupcake liners, wrap in plastic wrap and tie with a ribbon.

*Make sure no one has peanut allergies before handing out at a party or to yourfriends! If someone does, simply leave out the peanuts.

Are you going to try it? Um, maybe. It’s fuzzy...is food supposed to be fuzzy?

Yep! at least this one is! It’s kiwi fruit.

I just had my first one yesterday! My mom is letting me try new fruits and veggies each week to start the new year off healthy.

And if you don’t like it right away, that’s okay! It can take up to 8 tries before you start liking a new food.

I thought you said you were getting apples as a snack. But this doesn’t look like any apple I’ve ever seen.

your world have you tried it?

I’ll take your word for it, Sam, but I’m still not so sure… it looks kind of funny.

But it smells really sweet. Almost like candy!

YUM! You were right!

What are you doing now, Zack?

I want to try different fruits and veggies, too! I’m looking to see what we can try next week!

frozen fruits & veggies

Flash-frozen fruits and veggies are just as tasty - and just as good for you - as fresh produce. That makes them a good choice, especially in the winter when most of our favorite fresh produce isn’t in-season.

How can you make sure you’re filling your plate with fruits and veggies, even when fresh produce isn’t at its peak?

That’s easy!

Take a walk down the frozen aisle of your grocery store and you’ll find tons of tasty frozen fruits and veggies. They’re just as delicious as fresh varieties and just as good for you, too!

mighty milksWe know that milk has the calcium and vitamin D we need to help our bodies grow strong. But those of us who are lactose intolerant or have a milk allergy can’t drink dairy milk. Others of us may decide not to drink milk because of leading a vegan (vee-gan) lifestyle, or may just drink non-dairy milk in addition to dairy milk because we like the taste or texture.

You’ve probably seen many different non-dairy milks in the dairy section of your grocery store, and maybe even tried a few. These milks are made by soaking nuts, grains or legumes in water, then blending them into a liquid.

Almond Milkmade from ground almonds, slightly nutty flavor

Coconut MilkMade from the flesh of a coconut, creamy texture

Soy MilkMade with soy beans, creamy texture, closest to cow’s milk in protein

A milk allergy is caused when the immune system reacts to the protein in milk. This condition is more common in kids than adults. Sometimes kids grow out of their allergies and may be able to drink milk and eat dairy products as they get older.

Unlike a milk allergy, lactose intolerance doesn’t involve the immune system. This condition is caused when the digestive system can’t break down lactose, the sugar in milk. People with this condition usually need to avoid dairy or drink lactose-free milk. Lactose intolerance is more common in adults than kids.
