Broward College cel-ebrated the accomplish-ments of some of its out-

standing alumni with a party at the Signature Grand in Davie. In addi-tion to a

program inducting seven former students into the BC Alumni Hall of Distinc-tion, the evening included cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and dessert.

Merit award winners were Broward Commis-sioner Chip LaMarca; Dr. Robert Easton, an optometrist in Oakland Park; Shubert Chang, owner of Dynamic Orthot-ics in Davie; and actor and playwright David Sirois. Other honorees were Michael Nyitray, 2010 U.S. Olympic Committee

National Developmen-tal Coach of the Year, Emerging Leader; Mi-chael Borrone, president of the Broward College Alumni Network, Service to the College; and Diana Hunter-Gonzalez, author of Food Smart: Under-standing Nutrition in the 21st Century, Service to the Community.

BC trustee Sean Alves-hire and his wife, Denise, chaired the event. WSVN Ch. 7’s Derek Hayward served as master of cer-emonies.

FIGHTING CHILDHOOD HUNGER

When kids are hungry, it doesn’t matter where in the South Florida com-munity they live. Staff from several Broward restaurants crossed the county line to join in Miami-Dade’s Taste of the Nation, held this year at Turnberry Isle in Aventura. Guests munched fare from

top eateries and sampled scores of wines provided by Southern Wine & Spirits during an event that benefitted Share Our Strength, a national organization that fights childhood hunger through local events.

Broward participants included Catina Laredo, III Forks Prime Steakhouse and Ten Palms, all of Hal-landale Beach; Cookies by Shar of Davie; Palate Party of Hollywood; and We Take the Cake and Steak 954, both of Fort Lauderdale. Chef Allen Susser, owner of Burger Bar by Chef Allen at the Hollywood Fort Lauder-dale International Airport, chaired the evening, which earned $95,000 to fight childhood hunger.

FOREVER FAMILY HOSTS WINE TASTING

Supporters of Forever Family gathered at the Victoria Park home of Tom

and Amy Jones for an evening of tasting bou-tique wines compliments of Amy Kent, affection-ately known as the Social Wineaux, along with yummy hors d’oeuvres paired to the evening’s pours by Chef George Catering in Fort Lauder-dale. Al’s Florists provided flower arrangements.

Forever Family founder Gia Tutalo-Mote shared stories of children who have found families over the past 10 years with the organization’s help. While the evening earned about $1,000, it was more about raising awareness than funds.

Forever Family advo-cates for children in foster care and those aging out of it by using media to bring their stories to the public. “Our children in care need and deserve the love of a family,” Tom Jones said.

Stretch limousines needled through the streets, their drivers seeking circuitous routes to flummox passengers trying to guess where they were going. The occasion:

Chefs Help-ing the Home-less, an evening of dining where guests pur-

chased tickets knowing only the list of participat-ing chefs and restaurants, while their final destina-tions were kept secret.

Riders boarded the luxury vehicles at Ferrari-Maserati of Fort Lauderdale following a cocktail party in the huge showroom, where serv-ers passed elegant hors d’oeuvres and bartenders kept glasses brimming. During the reception, the Broward Partnership for the Homeless honored Bob Drinon, President and Chief Executive Officer of Premier Beverage Compa-ny, for his tireless support over the past five years.

As the reception drew to a close, BPHI’s Director of Development Bernie Teeple called each table host forward, where he or she ceremoniously drew a number designating a mystery destination. Par-tygoers then climbed into their limos, with only the drivers knowing the res-taurants that correspond-ed to the numbers drawn by hosts. Drivers added to the anticipation by taking indirect routes designed to keep riders in the dark as long as possible.

At each destination, the chef provided an el-egant, multi-course dinner paired with wines. All the chefs donated their din-

ners, allowing the evening to raise more than $58,000 for BPHI. BPHI board member Carol Molnar chaired the fabulous evening.

Participating chefs included Dean Max, 3030 Ocean; Mauricio Gutiér-rez, Aizia; Marc Gruver-man, Capital Grille; An-gelo Elia, Casa D’Angelo; Holger Strutt, Chops Lobster Bar; Eduardo De San Angel, Eduardo Pria; Johnny Vinczencz, Johnny V; Steven Manee, Mar-ket 17; Jeffrey Youkum, Morton’s The Steakhouse; Eddie Jean Joseph, Ruth’s Chris Steak House; Youssef Hammi, Secret Garden; David Deleon, Signature Grand; Jason Landon Smith, Steak 954; Michael Grasso, Truluck’s; and Christian Clair, Via Luna.

BPHI is committed to reducing homelessness by promoting independence and self-worth through advocacy, housing and comprehensive services.

“We believe in offering dignity, not handouts,” said philanthropist Mary Short, who hosted several tables at the event. Since

1999, the organization has helped 17,000 homeless individuals and families in Broward.

MUTTS STRUT THE RUNWAY

Haute couture for dogs? But of course!

Canine models strut-ted the runway at Design Center of the Americas, debuting a collection of ensembles for four-legged fashion plates created by notable interior design-ers and fabric house representatives. Sitting at tables with unique dog bed centerpieces, guests at the Patterns for PAWS (Pets Are Worth Saving) luncheon cheered the stylish mutts as they were introduced by masters of ceremonies Belkys Nerey of WSVN Ch. 7 and U.S. polo champion Nic Roldan. Human models accompanying them were outfitted in fashions from Lilac and Lilies.

Participating designers and DCOTA showrooms included Joe Fava, Magita Rojas, Osirys Mendez, Sabrina Vela, Michael Naoum, Deborah Wec-selman, Joan Simonsen-Hickok, Michelle Cast-agna, Laura Valdes, Eric Winnick, Tony Ferchak, Lorenzo B. Mollicone, Dawn Hamilton, Adriana Hoyos, Andrew Martin, Donghia, Duralee, JANUS et Cie; Judith Norman, Lee Jofa, Robert Allen, ROMO, Schumacher, Total Window and Designer’s Plumbing.

Tari Collins and Mi-chelle DiMarco chaired the luncheon, which earned $25,000 for the Humane Society of Bro-ward County, which had several adorable animals available for adoption dur-ing the party.

RECEPTION FOR BOUGAINVILLA HOUSE

Actors Penelope Ann Miller, Dennis Haysbert and Beau Bridges, in town for the Fort Lauder-dale International Film Festival, lent their glam-our to a private kickoff reception for Bougainvilla House, a new residential facility that will offer emo-tional and financial sup-port to families of children with terminal illnesses. Ja-net Davis, president and CEO of the Bougainvilla House, hosted the party at her waterfront home in Fort Lauderdale.

Miller appeared in The Artist, which ran at FLiFF and opened nationwide in November. Haysbert played David Palmer in the hit TV series 24. Bridges, who received a Lifetime Achievement award at FLiFF, was promoting his latest film, Don’t Fade Away.

Scheduled to break ground in the fall of 2012, Bougainvilla House will provide transportation, accommodations, meals, bereavement counseling and therapy to all, regard-less of their ability to pay. It launched as a nonprofit corporation using pro-ceeds from the sale of

HospiceCare of Southeast Florida to Heartland HCR Manor Care, continuing the mission of HCSEF. The $6-million, British West Indies-style, 40-room house, designed by Fort Lauderdale architect Bill Storrs, will feature pet-friendly and family rooms, indoor and outdoor dining, a chapel, tropical gardens, meditation areas and walkways paved with remembrance bricks.

DÉJÀ VU HONORS COMMUNITY LEADERS

Partygoers shook their shoes on the dance floor during Déjà Vu, a retro costume party at Bahia Mar Resort in Fort Lau-derdale. The gala drew

400 guests and earned $200,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Honorees were philanthropists Alan and Marsha Levy, community child advocates of the year; Filemón López of Com-cast, Corporate Visionary of the Year; Twan Rus-sell, Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation, Child Literacy Advocate of the Year; and Jennifer Valop-pi, Women of Tomorrow, Empowering Future Lead-ers Advocate of the Year. Ginny Miller and Monica Correll were chairs.
