2015 at UQFC (from the President’s Desk) by Paul Grainger Club President 2015 “2015 pre season has been very hectic, with a brand new Committee elected at the AGM and the largest demand for playing “the world game” the Club has ever experienced. A few stats

• 1427 registered players across junior and seniors – next largest clubs are Redlands, Peninsula, Mitchelton, Albany Creek and Holland Park with numbers ranging between 850-950

• Almost 700 Mini Roos (6-11 yrs) with over 65 players not able to be accommodated this season for the first time

• Total Club teams 128 requiring 128 plus coaches and 128 Managers as well as equipment and playing and training facilities

• Total senior teams 19 (senior players 300) • Total female players 332 (25% of club and

23 teams)

The way ahead Whilst the tremendous growth of the Club over the past few years is very satisfying it also brings new challenge in the levels of volunteers and training/playing facilities required on a weekly basis. The Club currently utilizes 4 venues at UQ and a further 4 venues around the Kenmore area to simply accommodate all teams. With further growth forecast (it appears we do some things well!!) and many, many things to improve, the Club has successfully applied for, and obtained a grant to conduct and compile a strategic plan to show the potential routes for UQFC over the next 5 years. Momentum sports and recreation consultants headed by Matt Fitzpatrick have been retained to provide independent knowledge and expertise in this important exercise. The plan is expected to take approximately 3 months to be completed and will involve a series of focus group sessions with different areas of the club and a club wide survey for all members to take part in.

THIS IS YOUR CLUB SO PLEASE TAKE PART WHEN INFORMATION IS DISTRIBUTED WHERE DO YOU WANT YOUR CLUB TO BE IN 5 YEARS? Key Committee Contacts Now that we have all of our teams and players up and running for 2015, we encourage you to share your constructive feedback with us as we address needs for 2016. Key contacts are: President – Paul Grainger [email protected] VP Seniors – Chris Watts – [email protected] VP Women – Wayne Gibbon [email protected] A full listing of all UQFC Committee members will be published soon through the monthly E News together with responsibilities Very best wishes and “see you at the far post””

2014 Wrap Plenty of teams hovered around the top end of their respective tables throughout the year, a quite a few went all the way to grand finals. On that score, as a club, there were 4 wins and 4 losses in grand finals. Maybe a coin flip would be quicker? Men Brisbane Premier League (BPL) 12 from 12 BPL Reserves 5 from 12 BPL U18 2 from 12

(lost the GF on penalties) BPL U16 7 from 12 Men’s U20 2 from 12

(won their GF 1-0) City League 1 1 from 12 (won their GF 2-0) City League 2 1 from 10 (lost their GF 0-2) City League 3 1 from 12 (lost their GF 0-1) City League 4 5 from 12 City League 5 5 from 12 City League 6 2 from 12 (lost their GF 2-3) Women SEQ Women’s Premier League (WPL) 3 of 12 Brisbane WPL 8 of 10 City League 1 5 of 12 City League 2 1 of 12 (won their GF 5-0!) City League 3 10 of 12 City League 4 7 of 8 Old Girls 1 of 8 (won their GF) End of Season Presentation Dinner and Awards night (and rant). Presso dinner was held in the rather salubrious surrounds of the Brisbane Polo Club. Such a venue would have been unthinkable 10 or even 5 years ago. Actually that is not quite true, we had our fair share of fancy presso dinners back in the day but they were also broken up by the odd left field location, such as a BYO Chinese restaurant in Milton. (your editors apologise once again for being responsible for this decision). So it was at the Polo Club, and one main reason was that the general manager of the Polo club was also someone official at the UQFC. We’d like to give our thoughts on the evening and intersperse them with photo’s, so it seems less like a sermon.

Lovely room, but with a senior club of our size we should have been able to fill it twice over. Presso dinners were this big back when the club considerably smaller.

You could actually hear the presentations! (I know, what, at a presso dinner?) Good sound system, and wonderful power point slides to remind those not listening where it was all up to. And even to announce at least one award early when the power point clicker went one click too far.

Page 4: Brown Bugle - Edition 1, 2015

Despite there being a record number of awards to get through, the pace was kept up by the jocular Bookie MC, good job again. Of course the pace was helped by the fact that so few award winners were actually there. Always a fizzer if the coach talks them up for 5 minutes only to then realize they didn’t make it along.

Jimmy was not allowed into the venue. Evidently this was not an on the spot decision, but for those who had no idea what had transpired (and still largely don’t) it made for fascinating speculation. Last I heard he was in cahoots with Nth Korea.

Appallingly small turn out from the Men’s top (Premier League) side. There were more people from the old boys teams there, (who only really know each other) than perhaps the entire top squad (first and ressies). More on this “Club Spirit” later.

Drinks were cut off 5 minutes early. I know, big deal, but I was on my way to the bar! A new award was introduced that was in the opinion of this old and long standing member completely at odds with the club’s nature. Entitled “President’s Award” it was, as the name suggests decided by one person. Not the way UQFC has ever worked (I know, living in the past…), but a sign perhaps of how things change. [The winner of that award also had a good shush at the fairly un-rowdy crowd during a different presentation. Felt like being back at school.] Then there were all the award winners, of course, might leave that list for the next page, read them if you care….

Coaching Once again a new year has brought a new coach for the Men’s top side. This one is called Brian Hastings, but don’t get too attached to him kids, he may not be around too long, if past is any guide. He was previously at North Star (now, what happened to them…oh that’s right, relegation) but has very impressive credentials. Couple of North Star players followed him over, something that always irks us a bit. What ever happened to club loyalty? More on that soon. Joining him is Donald McAuley, who is the head coach of the reserves side. Call us old fashioned, but not sure why you need two people to do the job of one (or one and an assistant at most). At any rate, he was previously at Moggill FC and we are told did good things. Time will judge them both, but here is something worth noting.

- In the past 15 odd years of UQFC, there have been exactly 2 men’s top squad coaches that have lasted more than 1 year.

Granted not all that was Premier level (which is now diluted again thanks to the NPL anyway), but only 2 coaches going longer??? Both of them (Tibor and Glen) were selected not by resume’s and panel interviews, but because it was felt they understood the system at Uni and could forge a way forward. And both did, with considerable success. Furthermore, under the current relegation system, UQ has very little chance of going down based on a poor top side, because, as usual we have strong reserves and now U18’s too. So there is every incentive to get the right long term prospect and bring talent through. There is no point shelling out money (to players or coaches) to chase some short-term dream of finishing top half of the table. If that is the plan. The club gains nothing from that anyway, just throwing cash to the wind. We used to laugh at clubs that did that, it is certainly not sustainable unless you have pokies or a junior club willing to bleed cash. NPL women Mind you, while the Men flounder a little the women have a side in the NPL (kind of pseudo state league). Same coach as last year too. Although again, we are not sure at what cost, and to what end. But if they can afford it, fine. The girls are killing it.

2016 Artificial Turf??? On a less controversial note, the Uni put out a press release announcing artificial turf pitches by 2016. One hockey, one football by the looks of it. On the plus side, we can get the Men’s top side off the rugby horse paddock, but whether the new location allows the club to reap any financial benefits of hosting home games, we will have to see. The location of the development is in from of the old Rec club, up to the Swimming pool area. Club Spirit (where did it go??) This may sadden many of the Alumni who basically made life friends and family at the club, but that club spirit is sadly lacking these days. The club’s size certainly doesn’t help, but the lack of social events and willingness of the hierarchy to promote club togetherness (ie get down and support another team, team or club nights) seems a bit disappointing. Case in point, and I know they had a rough year, but barely a player from the men’s top side attended the Presso dinner, and neither of their award winners were on hand. Pretty sure they have both departed the club now too. Never have we seen that before, they are normally the leaders. But 2016 is a new year, the club has a grant for a strategic plan, hopefully they consult widely, because one Chicken and Champagne breakfast (fun as it may be) does not a strong club make. Breaking News… FA Cup party is being organised. 30th May, Venue TBA. Let’s hope to see a good club turn out, and hope even more that Villa win the thing.

Club Song (time for a radio edit?) On that note, also sad to realize barely any teams sing the club song post victory these days. I know it isn’t universally loved, but it is a good common bonding point. If there is reluctance to continue with the existing version of the song, perhaps juniors or those high profile teams that don’t wish to offend could have an alternate? Q: So who scored the first goal? A: Me me me me mememememeeeee! We are ace, we are cool, we are Uni and we rule Tra la la la la la la la lah ah ah ah Uni here, Uni there, Uni’s always everywhere Tra la la la la la la la lah ah ah ah Up last night, (tick) up the night before (tick) Tonight we got up like we never got up before Here we are, happy as can be, we are the boys/girls from the Uni Victorious and Glorious, can’t kick a ball between the four of us It’s luck there ain’t no more of us, cause any one of us (could kick the ball away) Cause any one of us (could kick the ball away).. Uni Uni Uni! (Mass screaming)… Ok, so it is a work in progress, but suggestions welcome. It would be nice to offer a pretty schmick final version to the club in the hopes that they adopt it for say U16 upwards?

What is in a Name? (almost certainly an ongoing feature) As anyone who has spent anytime at UQ Soccer or Football club (or at college, or in Australia), there is a predilection for giving people names other than the ones they were born with. They often seemed to take on a life of their own, especially at our club. So it seemed like an interesting idea to devote a few column inches some of the more interesting names that have come and gone through the club. The theme for this edition: Names That Inspire Fear (or not). The theme may seem a little abstract at first, but as you read further, a trend will hopefully begin to coalesce, much as scum clumps on top of freshwater. Not that this is meant to infer all those mention hereafter are dross, that is you thought to have not ours to plant. Just about every football club on this planet has a player who is slightly unhinged and they are often given a name to go with that character trait. That is not to besmirch their entire personalities, but at some point they earned it. I was not present the day Psycho became Psycho, suffice to say there was no connection to the Hitchcock film. There have been three Choppers, at least. The first (80’s) is pictured a little later and was fond of a leg chop (back in the less-ruly days). The next was 90’s vintage and may also have been a leg sweeper, who preferred to chop them down than run them down, but the last, who came later 90’s but still kicks on, was brother of a chop, I think, and little chop became chopper, and later chipper (no reference to Fargo), or even floppy choppy, but he didn’t spread that one around. There was also Biff, a friend of Chopper 2, who was dually named for the 1st annual film festival in Brisbane, and that he punched someone, possibly from the Claivaux club, and got his red card desserts. There were a couple of Butchers too, both of whom liked a heavy tackle. They even played together for a period so needed to be known as Butcher number 1 and Butcher number 2. Very re-assuring for opponents. Neither worked with or sold cuts of meat. There was Skull around then too, and he was certainly a bit nuts on the field, but the name came from an AFL player. I also see Alan Stirling and Lethal in my notes at this point, but sadly can shed no more light on them. Hardman was apparently a hard man to tackle, so that is really quite literal for a change,

because he wasn’t at all a “hard man” in the Lock stock and two smoking barrels sense. Speaking of literal interpretations, there is Crazy Eyes, he may sound like a native American chieftain who will cause you no end of trouble, but in fact his eyes were just a little odd. Nice of us huh? Rowdy was anything and likewise Angry, although she could fire up when required. But living up to his name was Boltie, who was at times, but much to the appreciation of the rest of his team. He was also known as the human obelisk. Run into him and you knew why. And I nearly forgot Grumpy, our favourite Disney inspired character, and not often full of cheer. So it may seem we are a club of maniacs who would cut your liver out with a rusty Stanley given half the chance (and a good portion of the aforementioned are fullbacks, coincidence??). But where there is ying there is yang, after night comes day, America has Canada. Or something like that. So for balance we have the those, the mere mentionof their name will strike fear into no man, woman, child or toddler. And there is no better place to start that brothers, both sets from Northern NSW. First their was Flair (and years later there would be another, but opposite sex) because apparently he showed some. Consequently his brother inherited the equally threatening Sparkles, although it took him sometime during the match in which he was christened to figure out who we were all talking to. But he did. Around the same time Muffy, which to be fair was a shortened version of studmuffin, no explanation needed, a picture would do also had a brother arrive. Another type of muffin it seemed, so he was Blueberry. There was a Dancer, who really couldn’t (but he sure can pedal a bike), and a Dazey, (or is it Daisy?). Actually it is the Crazey Dr Dazey Dave to use the full moniker, but it takes to long. After a Daisy, it seems apt to have a Marion, who was named in a very long convoluted string that ended with John Wayne (and hence Marion), and Sally. Long haired (male) players on the opposition where referred to as “Sallys” for a period, then a pony tailed gent joined our team, so that was that. Still he loved it, I think Gee, just one female in that list, so better do better next time, and the theme…Acts (eg. Sticky) and last names (eg. Petrol-driven-jetski) Send stuff in. Other Old Teams In 2015 the club will again field 3 teams overflowing with old people, ok, older people. People who played many years for the club and have now “retired” to a fun team full of friends. Not that it stops things being competitive. The Distinguished Gentlemen (DG’s) Playing in City League 6 this year, due to some younger keen pups wanting to go higher, the average age must be fast approaching 40, as there is no longer a young person in sight. Training hasn’t happened for years, and even warm-ups before games seem frowned upon. Yru, Newman, Steelfingers, PG, Dazey, Harrington jnr, Stud Muffin, Gian, Loaf, Wilson, Davo, Otter, Tanker and Symbol. Here’s a photo from last year because they are so organized.

The Young Old Boys (YOB’s) Playing in the still fairly pacey surrounds of city League 3. They will be looking to avenge the injustice of last year, where in what some might call very “Uni” fashion they went all year undefeated (20 wins, 2 draws) and then lost the grand final. This years sees an injection of players that could still be playing top side, so no excuses. So, who’s there? Crazy, Torbs, Chopper, ELJ, Cookie’s, Zen, Mutton, Rossco, G-train, Blueberry, Ryland, Pmoo and Bookie. Old Girls After a successful, but ultimately un-competitive tilt at over 30’s, the old girls headed back to the regular leagues, City 3 in their case. But who came with them? Ewok, Boyes, Shoes?, Kel, JJJ, Junk, Redhead, Mich Smith Chloe and Stinky.

The Might Fifths Almost certainly the oldest surviving of the “old” teams. Now playing it the Qld Independent Football league (grew out of Commercial League). Last year saw them just miss out on the minor premiership and then lose the GF to a bunch on 19 year olds (about the age of PLant’s son). Preseason has seen a loss, a win, and an ACL getting hammered. Oh dear. Many familiar names in there though, such as BFri, Matty Shak is back, Chris and Paul Frisch, The Don, Stroops, Plant, Lincoln and of course Brad Baker. UQFC Alumni Match Day Yes there will be one. Likely mid year, date and details to follow. Celebrating Girls & Women's Football at UQFC Off the back of the strong crowd that attended the Roar game (UQ NPL side vs Women’s Roar side), there is a plan to hold a bit of an event on the 14th June. NPL play The Gap at field 5. We’ll try and send a reminder about this later on too.

Old People/Alumni/Barracudas For now, anyone with interest, information or idea, email Rob Bell ([email protected]). Keeping in touch There are now even more ways to keep in touch with your former team mates. Apart from the current UQFC facebook page, there is now also a Linkkedin group, set up by one Paul “Mule” Hagenson (95 – 00). http://www.linkedin.com/groups/UQFC-Alumni-6591088 If that is not enough there is a small, but opinionated and decidedly grumpy facebook offshoot group set up by O. It may be private though, so get in tough with him if you really want to hear what old men think. Births, Deaths and Marriages (and more) McClurg number 3 arrived dec 7. Ari Miller McClurg. And then there were three...introducing Ari McClurg, born yesterday 07/12/14 at 1.38am. A not-so-little boy of 4.06kg / 8 pound 15 oz and 54cm long. Was lucky to have another easy labour and everyone is doing well! [Parents are Mina (late 90’s) and Cam/Bruiser (late 90’s) for those wondering]

Fred Hess (78 - 83) has a new job (Managing Director PanAust Limited) an ASX 200 mining company. !!!

Our western Canada correspondent David “Waco” Kerruish (early 00’s) can report that Mike and Ainslie Conway (nee Caldwell) (also early 00’s) and gave birth to their second child and first daughter on Tuesday, Airlie Robyn Conway. Baby, mum and dad (also known to a few in the club) are all doing great and heading back home to Whistler today.

Kate “Angry” Alliston (99 - 02) has had another baby - number 3 - Emily (top of next column). Born 1/8/14 - 7 months now. She has just signed her eldest (5yo) son (Angry Jnr) up for weekend Soccer - where did all of that time go!!

Page 11: Brown Bugle - Edition 1, 2015

Hamish Owen Wordsworth arrived 5 November 2014 in Houston, Texas (7 lbs, 3 wks early). All the Wordsworths returned to Brisbane on 9 February 2015, exactly 2 years after they left for Houston. Jim “Davo” (89 – 00, and more) is back with the Old Boys team, Sirrah (97 - 08) is an honorary member of the Old Girls team until she gets some fitness back, hoping to make a comeback next season. They are thinking about getting some boots for Heidi though...she is nearly two after all.

Also Jim has a new job, not sure how interesting that is for everyone. Left Weatherford after many, many years to join a small geophysics firm in West End as their Commercial Manager. John “Plunger” Nowland (96 - 99) has been in Hong Kong for 5 years now. Despite the perception of HK being a small place, there is a lot of soccer going on apparently, friendly soccer anyway, the professional soccer is pretty rubbish. Lots of synthetic pitches here in HK, so we can play all year round. John has been playing a bit with a few different teams, some with players into their 50s. It seems his strategy is to play with older teammates. That means he still look relatively good. That plan will fall over one day though. He has two kids, a 10 year old son and a 7 year old daughter. Both playing soccer and doing ok. Future UQ football club members of course! Below is John’s son’s team (Banks Nowland is back row third from left).

Of course there is an upcoming UQFC wedding on May 9th, and assuming this goes out before then details in the next Bugle. On a related topic, John “Beaver” Jenvey (94 - 98) has moved back to Brisbane after selling his business in Canberra. Accompanied by wife Lucy and 4 kids. No immediate plans to don boots due to an Achilles injury and having no time at all with 4 young kids. Not sure if anyone remembers an American guy who showed up to play in probably '04 - Mike Zusi? Anyweay he played for the ressies and Met 1 mostly. Might have been on the odd bench for the top team. The point being he was a champ and his brother, Graham, went to the World Cup in Brazil with team USA. UQFC at the World Cup at last, sort of. For the past, well, several years, former UQ player (93 – 09) and later top team coach (05 – 12), Glen “Pubis” Volker has been head coach of the Brisbane City NPL side. (NPL, or National Premier League is the step down from A-League and supposedly state-wide, but in QLD, mostly SE QLD). Anyway, after a concerted “Pubis Out!” campaign by some gormless freckle at the Courier Mail, and a few clashes over the direction of the team, Pubis left, sighting irreconcilable differences. So now has a bit more time on his hands to finish his A-License and endorse the “Pubis In!” campaign that is already building momentum in the disquieted blocks around UQFC. Speaking of coaching, there seem to be a multiplying number of Alumni coaching in the junior ranks now. Mainly their offspring. Marty Mac (86-88, 98-05) is coaching son Connor’s UQ team, the u11 Stormers in one of the Komodo Dragons hubs. He’s actually been his coach since he started in u6s. He hasn’t taught him the team victory song yet though. Also on weekend coaching duties, Mark “Boris” Dacey, Rob “Steelfingers” Bell, Andrew Grigg, Marty “Symbol” Buttigieg, Don Weerheim and of course a few more that coach at a much higher level at the club (Yru and Gian), and hey, probably many more.

Blast from the past. This photo is from 1982 according to the date written on the back, but the mystery person that supplied the scan to us it did not give us names. So after a little snooping we got there. And yes that is Oval 2/3 from over 30 years ago, it wasn’t new then either.

names in case you were wondering… (L – R) Gary Goldsworthy - Gazza Wayne Parsons – Poo - passed on two years ago from cancer Gordon Grieve – Gusher (elder brother to Stewart) Greg Drew – the famous Dribble - passed away some years ago to cancer Nick Kelly - Stains Graham Baxter – Dog Chris England – Chopper Mike Taylor – Mick&Mike Nick Botfield - Boggy

Girls and Women’s Football Day Ok, it was the middle of last year, but remiss to to at least briefly re-mention it. There was a barbeque and also a small presentation to celebrate former UQFC women’s player Sue “Monty” Monteith (86 – 2011?) being named in the FFA Women’s Team of the Decade for 1979-1989, and also (now former) Men’s Premier League coach Greg Brown for his nomination as Women’s Team of the Decade coach for 1990-1999.

Vintage Events Last year saw the first of these and may there be more to follow. It was wine and cheese, but for the vintage generation, that is mostly folks that played in the 90’s and 00’s. Good night had by all. Oh, I forgot Vintage Race Day, with everyone sporting brown of course.

That is kind is not to forget that Nick Kelly’s era, the 70’s and 80’s (mostly boys) have a yearly lunch or two. So if the previous lot are “vintage” then perhaps this lot are retro? Certainly the earlier photo of many of them suggests so. The Editors of this fine publication enjoy being big fish in a little pond. With the right amount of denial and ignorance you can believe you actually really big fish in a big pond, and there is no where else to go. You have made it. Stop trying, be content and eat any little prick that looks threatening, or tasty. That is all.
