Meeting 1

Introduction to the Cookie Activity: Set and Share Goals

Girls with goals go far! During this meeting take time to cover the basics of the Cookie Activity, then help girls set goals.

Discussion topics:

• Why do we sell Girl Scout Cookies? • Why do we set goals, both personal and for teams? • Discuss cookie varieties.• Introduce the Make it a Hit! theme. Explain how this season each girl will

have the opportunity to make this Cookie Season the best ever.

Supporting crafts and activities:

• Help your team brainstorm by playing the “Reel” Action Brainstorming Game, whichwill help them generate ideas for how to spend their cookie money. Set a team goal andencourage each girl to set a personal goal that will help the group meet its goal.(Information located on the order card and can be found at www.littlebrownie.com.)

• Make goal reminder finger puppets or cookie magnets.

• Plan a team Walk of Fame – choose a day to canvass neighborhoods as a team. Many customers are never asked to buy cookies, and they prefer tobuy from girls who come to their doors. (Find out more from your council or at www.littlebrownie.com.)

• Have a Red Carpet Party – during the day or as a sleepover.

• Select other theme activities below to fit the girls’ interests and abilities.

Safety and Selling Tips: Sell beyond family and friends.

People love Girl Scout Cookies. Many women say their first business success was getting a “yes” from anunknown customer. Reinforce safety rules, but encourage your girls to sell beyond people they know.

Discussion topics:

• Before girls can hit the streets, it is important to learn and practice the safety rules listed below.- Girls should wear Girl Scout identification - their membership pin with their uniform, sash, or t-shirt.- Girls should be familiar with the neighborhoods in which they sell.- An adult must accompany Brownie or Junior Girl Scouts when taking orders, selling and delivering

cookies. Girls must sell with a buddy.- Girls sell door-to-door only during daylight hours.- Girls should never enter a customer’s home.- Adults must be present at all times when Girl Scouts operate a booth in a store, mall or other public place.- Girls must have a plan for safeguarding the money collected. Money may be given to the accompanying

or supervising adults so girls are not walking around with large amounts of cash.- Girls should never give out their names, addresses or telephone numbers to customers. Only an adult’s

telephone number should be given out to customers.

Supporting crafts and activities:

• It’s almost show time! Review the following selling tips and have girls come up with some of their own.- Practice your sales pitch- Always share your goals with customers- Recommend your cookie favorites- Never leave home with out your order card- Sell with enthusiasm!

• Time for some improv. Role-play and discuss what to do in thefollowing situations:

- A customer asks you to step inside her house while she gets her money.- Your parents are not home and your best friend asks you to sell cookies

with her.- A customer asks for your home address and phone number to place

another order.- You are at a booth sale and someone tells you he cannot buy cookies

because he is on a diet.

• Select other theme activities below to fit the girls’ interests and abilities.

Meeting 3

Calling all drama queens!

What can your team do to have fun with the performing arts? Spend this meeting preparing a dramaticperformance for the team’s meeting with parents or other purpose. Maybe girls will choose to perform versions of their sales pitches, create a puppet show or write an original musical.

Discussion topics:

• What kinds of live performances and recorded performances (movies) have you seen? Have you ever been in a performance?

• Actors begin with imagining they truly are the character they are portraying. Have you done the same thing inmake-believe?

• Besides actors, many people doing many different kinds of jobs must cooperate for a successful performance. How many different jobs can you name? How is this cooperation a lot like Cookie Season?

Supporting crafts and activities:

• Create your own Cookie Musical with the step-by-step guideavailable at www.littlebrownie.com.

• Maybe you would like to host a Red Carpet Party thatfeatures puppets ... or a pet show.See Red Carpet Party suggestions on page 12.

• Select other theme activities below to fit the girls’ interestsand abilities.

Family Meeting

When families are involved, girls succeed!

Roll out the red carpet! Invite families to share in the fun by holding a special Family Cookie Party at your teammeeting time. Engaging families encourages them to be involved and stay informed in their daughter’s Cookie Activity.

Discussion topics:

• In addition to being a money-earning project, the Cookie Activity is a unique and valuable way that Girl Scoutslearn valuable life skills such as: goal setting, money management, communication and teamwork.

• The Cookie Activity supports all of the girls in your council and makes it possible to provide girl programs,low-cost council events, training, resources and support for adult programs.

• The Make it a Hit! theme puts girls in the spotlight. Girls will learn that hits don’t just happen. They’re made ...through imagination, rehearsal, commitment, teamwork and leadership.

• Girls can explain their team goal through a short speech or performance. They could use improv and askparents to guess what goal they’re depicting.

How families can help…

• Filling out all forms and returning in a timely manner. Remember: All girls musthave a signed parent permission form and be a registered Girl Scout to participate.

• Listening to girls practice their sales talk. Create “cue cards” to help them learntheir lines!

• Taking the Girl Scouts to work• Walking door-to-door• Helping organize cookie orders• Helping at booth sales• Arranging booth sales at work

Supporting activities:

• Make it a “Red Carpet Party,” complete with a “carpet” made from a red plastic tablecloth.See the Red Carpet Party suggestions below.

• Suggest that girls perform a prepared song or complete musical about the Cookie Activity. Go towww.littlebrownie.com for a step-by-step guide.

Fun Activities!Musical Movie NightHave a sleepover with some great movie musicals for entertainment. How about Shirley Temple in Little Miss Broadway?

DuetsPlace all the girls’ names in a hat. Draw out two at a time. Each pair mustentertain the rest of the girls with a “duet.” Can they make up a song abouttheir favorite cookie?

ClassicsModify beloved classic children’s party games to fit in with the star-studdedtheme. Play musical chairs using a song from a Broadway musical. Instead ofpinning a tail on the donkey, pin the star on the dressing room door.

Comedy Central Divide girls into two teams. Each team lines up opposite the other, forming an aisle in between. Flip a coin to seewhich team goes first. The first girl on that team walks down the aisle while the girls on the opposite team try tomake her smile. They can make silly faces and sounds, but they cannot touch her. If she smiles, she must join theopposite team. If she doesn’t, she returns to her side and the girl from the next team walks down the aisle.Play continues until everyone is tired of laughing!

Sweet SuccessWith some clever cutting and decorating, girls can create a a cake to look like glamour sunglasses. Just usecommon round cake pans to cut the shapes, and then decorate with colorful icing, sprinkles or candy. You couldalso make cupcakes decorated with stars or musical notes.

Dazzling DiningCreate fun place settings. Decorate the handles of forks, spoons and knives with self-adhesive or glue-on gems.Black utensils are especially dramatic. Use ring pops as napkin rings. Put a paper napkin in the ring and useaccordion folds to shape it like a fan.

Backstage PassesInstead of nametags, create “backstage passes” for guests At the narrow top of a large index card, writeBACKSTAGE PASS – or print the words out on the computer using a theater-type font. Punch a hole in each of thetop two corners and pull through a long string so it can be worn around the neck, hanging to about mid-chest.Place the “passes” near the door and ask everyone to put their name on one and wear it during the event.

Wardrobe WondersInvite guests to come dressed as their favorite character from a musical. Don’t forget, many Disney movies aremusicals too.

Miss HostessGirls who are hosting the meeting can drape a wide red ribbon from one shoulder to the opposite hip, in the styleof a beauty pageant contestant. On the ribbon, use permanent marker to write “Cookie Diva” or other message.

Music MadnessPlay upbeat musical soundtracks as guests arrive to immediately create irresistible excitement.

Talent ShowEvery girl has a talent to share. Maybe your Red Carpet Party is a celebration for a Talent Show starring Girl Scouts.

Pets GaloreFor many girls, pets are the star attraction. Host a pet show that highlights everyone’s favorite animal. Each girltells why her animal is special and walks with it down the “catwalk” so everyone can see. Girls can also bringphotographs of their pets or a favorite stuffed animal. The important thing is for every girl to have a chance toshine. Remember to check the rules for your meeting space and to tell girls their pet must be on a leash or in acarrier. This is a great outside activity, and plenty of adult help is a must.

Tech CrewThe right technology can add fun and efficiency to your Red Carpet Party. Girls can use a video camera to recordthe happenings or make a PowerPoint presentation about their goals. Email is a great way to invite guests. Use acomputer to create artistic promotional posters and event programs.
