Message from the School Administration

Dear Families of the Brownridge Public School Community,

I am excited to welcome everyone back! A special warm welcome goes out to new students and their families who will be joining our school community for the first time.

Here at Brownridge PS, our goal is to promote problem solving, respect, and the embracing of mistakes for the purpose of learning. In other words, if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

Our new theme song for the year is “We’re all in this together” from the movie High School Musical. Our focus this year is to continue to promote a sense of belonging, inclusion, and learning from mistakes. We believe the message in this song is one we want to resonate with students. Check it out at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbrbUfYSt0E

STAY CONNECTED: This year we will continue to maintain a high level of communication with families of Brownridge through email (please provide us with your email address if you would like to be added), through Twitter (follow us @brownridgeps), through your student’s agenda, through our website (http://bit.ly/2eEUkwP) and through our blog (https://brownridgeps.com/).

SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING: Please join us for our first School Council meeting on Monday, September 17, 2018. We will be meeting in the library at 6:30pm.

Our awesome staff are excited to engage your students in a variety of different ways– modern learning, guided reading, mathematical reasoning and problem solving, and more. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher to discuss your child’s progress at anytime.

I look forward to working with you throughout the year.

Reporting Child’s Absences/Planned Absences/Late Arrival through Edsby On-Line

Brownridge Public School uses an online process through Edsby for Attendance. Regular and punctual attendance affects school success and is expected of all students. However, if your child is going to be absent or late, it is important to let the school know as soon as possible for the safety and security of your child.

If you have not already created an account, please contact the office to assist you in creating one.

Families that have created an Edsby account to access the online attendance platform, please log into your account and follow the instructions to report your child’s absence, planned absence, vacation or late arrival. For assistance please visit online video tutorial to learn more (bit.ly/edsbyabsence) to access videos of how to use the attendance platform.

If your child is going to be absent or late, please ensure you indicate this in EDSBY. If you are experiencing difficulty, please call the school at 905-660-3803 to let us know. Please clearly state your child’s name, grade and teacher. Parents, guardians and students are reminded of school entry, recess and dismissal times. We encourage students to be on time for school, as late arrivals cause disruptions to a class that is already in session and students miss valuable instructional time. Additionally, if a student needs to leave early for an appointment, please send a note to your child's teacher that morning with the details thus eliminating the need for the office to have to call into the classroom and disrupt the class. Where possible, arrangements should be made ahead of time. Part of the YRDSB Safe Arrival Program is to ensure we know the whereabouts of each Brownridge student. If we are unable to determine the whereabouts of your child because it is not indicatedin EDSBY nor on the absence line AND we cannot contact a parent or one of the emergency contacts listed, Board policy is for the school to notify York Region Police.

If you have any questions about this process, please contact our main office at 905-660-3083.

Calling on all Volunteers

Interested in volunteering? We hope to get many volunteers to help us establish certain programs for our school and support field trips. Volunteers will require a Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) available through York Region Police. First you must obtain a Volunteer Letter from the school and bring it to the police station. See the York Region Police website for more information– yrp.ca. Obtaining this VSS form may take several weeks so we encourage interested volunteers to consider applying for a Vulnerable Sector Screening asap. Please submit the original copy to the office.

INCLEMENT WEATHER DAYS

If buses/taxis are cancelled in the morning, they are also cancelled for the afternoon.

For safety reasons, you may choose whether or not to send your child to school; however, if you keep him/her home and your child is NOT bused, you MUST report the absence on EDSBY or on our absence line. Our Safe Arrival Program dictates that we know where all absent students are — if we cannot reach you, we will contact your emergency contact person. If we cannot reach that person, we are obligated to contact the police.

There may be a modified program in your child's class due to numbers of students attending and absences of some teachers. If your child does not attend school on a day that buses are cancelled due to inclement weather, your child will not face attendance related repercussions.

Please note:

Dress for the weather: bus cancellation does not mean automatic indoor recesses or early entry into the school.

When buses are cancelled in the YRDSB, there are no field trips, meetings, or special events.

Information regarding bus cancellations is posted at www.schoolbuscity.com, conveyed to GTA radio/television stations, and available on the Board’s Twitter feed: https//twitter.com/#!/YRDSB

We strongly encourage you to follow us on Twitter @brownridgeps for updated information.

BUS CANCELLATIONS:

If the condition of the roads necessitates the cancellation of bus service, local radio stations will be informed as early as possible and will broadcast this information to the community. Please be advised that if buses are cancelled in the morning they will not run after school — regardless of the weather. Review your plans as to what your children will do in the event of late buses or cancellations. We encourage you to follow us on Twitter: @brownridgeps. We will tweet out if an inclement weather day is declared and if buses are cancelled. The following radio stations announce cancellations:

AM 640, AM 680, AM 1540, FM 92.5, FM 97.3, FM 98.1, FM 107.1, AM 590, FM 88.5,

FM 90.3, AM 1010, FM 93.1, AM 1050, FM 99.9, AM 1530, FM 100.7, FM 104.5

HOT LUNCHES Our amazing school council will once again organize hot lunches. We would appreciate any help you can offer so that we can offer this program weekly. Hence, we require volunteers to organize lunches. We ask that you spare 40 or so minutes of your time. Again, any help you can offer is appreciated in our efforts to run this program weekly. If you can assist, please let us know by e-mailing your interest and availability to: [email protected]

Our hot lunch program is our main source of school fundraising. We appreciate all of your support.
