All the data so collected is subject to the provisions and schedules of the Data Protection Act (2018) and the General Data Protection Regulations 2018 and should not be shared with individuals or organisations not authorised to receive it. If Dairy go to 2. 2) Is the abortion enquiry from a show or market? If Yes, sampling is required, go to 9. If No go to 3 3) Was the animal imported? If Yes, sampling is required, go to 9. If No go to 4 4) Has the animal had a previous normal calving? (live, full term) If No, sampling is required, go to 9. If Yes go to 5 5) Is the animal in a herd contributing to monthly bulk milk sampling for Brucella (Dairy only)? If No, sampling is required, go to 9. If Yes go to 6 6) Has there been a previous abortion in the herd within 30 days before the date of this abortion? If Yes, sampling is required, go to 9. If No go to 7. Check iSam for confirmation 7) Is the animal classed as a Brucellosis Inconclusive Reactor following a previous Brucellosis test? If Yes, sampling is required, go to 9. If No go to 8 8) Is the animal in a herd which is either under restrictions following disclosure of reactors to a Brucellosis test, or known to be at risk of exposure to brucellosis? If Yes, sampling is required, go to 9. If No advise the caller: 'No inquiry for Brucella is required on this occasion. Thank you for reporting the abortion & please continue to report any future abortions within 24 hours. APHA will issue a letter for your records.' 9) *Is Sampling Required? If Yes advise the caller, 'An abortion inquiry is required. APHA will issue a restriction notice prohibiting movement of certain animals by post, and sampling will be arranged. The animal should be isolated (if not already), and please retain the foetus & afterbirth. It takes up to 3 weeks to develop the cultures and determine a result.' (The Brucellosis Orders require the owner to isolate the animal and retain the products of conception until the necessary samples have been taken or until a notice is served requiring disposal).
