We are trying to improve the ways in which we communicate with some simple acts at first and would like to hear your suggestions as we move forward. We are now sending more information via email to a mass mailing list. Recent examples included notification that the NEASC survey would be arriving in the mail and the email you should have received notifying you that this newsletter was now on the website. We are also trying to consolidate calendars so that you can see what is happening a bit easier. The Grade 11 students will be involved in several exams. The Grade 11 experience will begin on either March 24 or 25, depending on whether we have any more snow days. That is when they will take the Science Augmentation, the assessment that is paired with the May 3 Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), required for all Grade 11 or third year high school students in the State of Maine. Then, on Tuesday, April 8, Grade 11 will be involved in the field test of the Smarter Balanced Language Arts Test. This test, when administered in the future, will measure student and school progress toward meeting the Common Core Standards. Students will become familiar with the types of questions and the method of administration and we will become more familiar with exactly what we need for smooth admin- istration. We will not receive results back for this administration. Then, as mentioned above, all Grade 11 students will come to school on Saturday, May 3 for the SAT. Grade 9 students will be taking the Smarter Balanced Language Arts Test on Wednesday, April 9. The pur- pose of this test is explained above. Dear Parents,

The school was awash in black and orange last Friday and it was a good deal of fun gathering in the gym as a

total school community. The occasion was the grand finale of the previously postponed Winter Carnival and a grand time was had by all. While this type of occasion is one of the ways that we can both build and demon-

strate school spirit, we will be trying to send the message that another more important way to build and

demonstrate our pride in BHS is by choosing to support and encourage each other to be our very best every day. It is usually those seemingly small positive actions that can help each of us to feel better about being part

of the community.

COMMUNICATION

At the recent Parent Forum, several parents shared their concern about the way that we communicate as a

school. I heard that parents appreciate the way that teachers return email requests for information. Further, while there was wide agreement that parents and students should share more of the responsibility for talking about what is happening in the school as students move through the system, we also agreed that this is a chal-lenge. We are trying to improve the ways in which we communicate with some simple acts at first and would

like to hear your suggestions as we move forward. We are now sending more information via email to a mass mailing list. Recent examples included notification that the NEASC survey would be arriving in the mail and the email you should have received notifying you that this newsletter was now on the website. We are also trying

to consolidate calendars so that you can see what is happening a bit easier. We will still include some special-ized grade level or activity calendars, but will also include a more complete look in one site. These are small

steps, but do not hesitate to contact us with further suggestions.

UPCOMING TESTING

We will be administering a variety of standardized tests during the coming weeks and months. The Grade 11

students will be involved in several exams. The Grade 11 experience will begin on either March 24 or 25, depending on whether we have any more snow days. That is when they will take the Science Augmentation, the assessment that is paired with the May 3 Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), required for all Grade 11 or third

year high school students in the State of Maine. Then, on Tuesday, April 8, Grade 11 will be involved in the field test of the Smarter Balanced Language Arts Test. This test, when administered in the future, will measure student and school progress toward meeting the Common Core Standards. For this year, we are administering the field test for familiarization purposes only. Students will become familiar with the types of questions and

the method of administration and we will become more familiar with exactly what we need for smooth admin-istration. We will not receive results back for this administration. Then, as mentioned above, all Grade 11

students will come to school on Saturday, May 3 for the SAT.

Grade 9 students will be taking the Smarter Balanced Language Arts Test on Wednesday, April 9. The pur-

pose of this test is explained above.

COURSE REGISTRATION

While it always seems that the process for pre-registration for next year’s courses comes way too early, stu-

dents will begin their selection process next week with visits by the Guidance Counselors to English classes.

I look forward to seeing and meeting you at the various musical, dramatic, artistic, and athletic

events over the coming months.

ATTENTION SENIOR PARENTS

Parents of Seniors are asked to send pictures to the Counseling Office for the Senior Slide Show. Pictures

are accepted all year long, but must be received no later than March 21st. We hope to receive one childhood/baby photo per senior. Group photos from elementary and junior high age are also great! Small

group shots work well. Please remember that there are over 200 seniors in this class. The goal is to have

every senior in the slide show. We will use as many of the photos as possible but please understand that we

have a short time frame to show the slideshow. Pictures can be emailed, mailed or hand delivered to the

Counseling Office. Photos will be returned at the conclusion of Senior Night. Please label all your pictures

with your senior’s first initial and last name. If you have any questions contact 319-1912 or send an e-mail to

The United States Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by Executive Order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our Nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. BHS is proud to announce that seniors Hannah Vilas and Walter Martin have been

nominated to become 2014 Presidential Scholars. Students have the opportunity to become Presidential Scholars based on two paths of accomplishment. The majority of the Scholars are selected on the basis

of broad academic achievement. Approximately twenty additional students are selected on the basis of their academic and artistic scholarship in the visual arts, the performing arts, or creative writing. The selection of approximately 3,000 academic candidates generally is

made based on SAT and ACT scores.

Congratulations Hannah and Walter!

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

this year’s Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Competition. This competition was established in 1923 to ensure

most prestigious recognition program in the nation offering the largest source of scholarships for students in grades

7 through 12. Jurors look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal

BHS Hero Among US There are many heroes among us that often go unrecognized. BHS math teacher Clark Porter is one of these heroes who recently donated a kidney to his sister-in-law who was suffering from an auto-immune disease that totally wiped out her kidney function. Clark was a matching blood type and started the process of determining if he was a suitable donor. He went through exhaustive testing in Decem-ber of 2012 and turned out to be an excellent donor candidate. The surgery took place on 1/9/2014 and went really well. The transplant was successful and everyone is recuperating nicely. After 6 weeks, Mr. Porter is back to work and feeling stronger every day and should be close to 100% after 6 months or so. BHS surprised Mr. Porter with an assembly that honored this selfless act. BHS is currently raising money to donate to the American Kidney Foundation in Mr. Porter’s name.

COUNSELING OFFICE NEWS

All Juniors and 3rd Year Students Will Take The SAT On Saturday May 3rd

All Brunswick High School juniors, including all students in their 3rd year of high school are

required to take SAT tests in critical reading, writing, and mathematics. Since 2006 the SAT has replaced the grade 11 Maine Educational Assessment (MEA) for secondary students. The Department of Education has covered the cost of registration for the May SAT and has arranged, through the College Board, to provide all public high schools in Maine with automatic pre-registration. That process has been completed for juniors and 3rd year students and all of these students are registered for the May3rd test. All of these students will be required to take the SAT on May 3rd which is a Saturday. The Department of Education has declared this a school day for all juniors and 3rd year students, and attendance is mandatory. Transportation will be provided for students who need it on that day and request it ahead of time. Light breakfast food will be provided before the SAT and pizza will be provided at the end of testing on May 3rd.

All Juniors and 3rd Year Students Will Take Science Assessments on March 24 or 25 (whichever is a BLACK DAY) (during the regular school day)

In addition to the May SAT, the Department of Education has included a Science and Technology test. The science test will consist of 44 common items administered across two, 50 minute sessions. The third item is a Student Questionnaire which will take 15 minutes. Additional information on the May SAT as well as the Science Assessments will be provided to students at a later date.

Course Registration 2014-2015

Though it would appear winter is still in full force, spring is fast approaching, the snow WILL melt and it is time to begin

planning for the next school year!! The Course of Study books will soon arrive and that means pre-registration for 9th, 10th and 11th grade students. On March 11th and 12th the counseling department will distribute materials to those stu-

dents, provide any updates and answer questions.

The Course of Study will be posted on the BHS Home Page. Completed registration forms are due in the

Counseling Office by March 21 so students will be looking for feedback and signatures from teachers. Thank you in

advance for helping to make sure your student signs up for the appropriate classes and levels and obtains the required

signatures. Feel free to contact your student’s teachers if you have specific questions.

In addition, this is the time when juniors and 3rd year students are beginning to prepare for the May SAT. All have

been registered automatically through the state and will have the opportunity to set up College Board accounts in the

Learning Center. As in previous years, there is the Science Augmentation to the SAT which must be administered during

the school day. The augmentation will be given to juniors and 3rd year students on March 24 or 25th, whichever is a

Black Day. More information will follow and, as always, we appreciate your assistance in helping to make this process go

YOUTH ART MONTH EXHIBITION at the

PORTLAND MUSEUM OF ART National Youth Art Month is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of art education and to encourage public support for quality school art programs. Art education provides students with important critical-

thinking and problem-solving skills, in addition to fostering self-esteem, self-discipline, and an appreciation for the work

of others. The Youth Art Month exhibition celebrates and validates student achievement in the visual arts, and the

Portland Museum of Art is proud to honor the talent and dedication of these young artists and their teachers. In collaboration with the Maine Art Education Association, the Museum has organized an exhibition of over 100 artworks

created by Maine art students in grades K - 12.

The show will run from March 8 through April 6 with an opening reception on Saturday, March 8 from 4 p.m. to 7:30

p.m. Refreshments will be served and the public is welcome to attend. Three BHS students were selected to partici-

pate in this special exhibit:

Happy March to you all! We here at the BHS Music department hope that you are enjoying your winter and

thoughts of sun shine and beautiful weather are closer to a reality as we enter the new month.

For those of you who are not familiar, March is "Music in our Schools Month". MIOSM is a Nationally observed

month where music becomes the centerpiece in our various public education institutions across the country. It was

first observed in 1973 and has grown each year since that date. The purpose is to raise awareness about the

importance of music education and to remind the community that public school is where children should have

access to music. Because of this, March is a super busy time for the music department and we have several

performances that we would LOVE to see you attend.

First, on Monday, March 3rd, the BHS Music Department will be celebrating "Music In Our Schools Month" by performing a concert with the Casco Bay Concert Band in Crooker at 7 p.m. This performance is open to the public and Free. The Casco Bay Concert Band website is apparently down but you can do some research on them. They

are one of the best community bands in the northeast and have established a reputation for excellence. One of their primary missions is to promote music in the public schools and each year, they pick a community to host a

"Music in the Schools Month" concert. This year, we are the lucky recipients of that honor. Our Concert Band will be opening the concert followed by the CBCB. Finally, the evening will culminate in a combined piece where some

of our students will join them on stage. This is going to be a very special concert and worthy of your time.

On March 5th, there is our monthly Music Boosters Meeting at 6:30 in the band room. All are encouraged to attend and lend a hand with various organizational tasks that the boosters are responsible for. We encourage you all to

attend.

Saturday, March 8th, the BHS Jazz Ensemble and Combo will be competing at the Clark Terry UNH Jazz Festival held on the UNH Campus in Durham, NH. This festival plays host to several hundred students from across

New England as they will compete against a national standard and perform for a panel of adjudicators who will critique the band and provide valuable written feedback and performance suggestions. The day will culminate with a

concert featuring Wycliffe Gordon and Rex Richardson who are both internationally known jazz musicians.

On March 11th, the BHS Concert band will be participating in the annual Band-a-rama at Mt. Ararat Middle School.

Band-a-rama is an annual concert that brings together the bands from Brunswick, Morse, and Mt. Ararat in an evening showcase of some of the finest instrumental music in public schools Each band performs 2 selections and

then combines at the end into one large ensemble where they perform a few combined works. The event begins at 7 p.m and is at the Orion Performing Arts Center at Mt. Ararat Middle School. Admission is free and open to the

public!

Friday, March 14th and Saturday March 15th is the Maine State Instrumental Jazz Festival which is being held at Hampden Academy. Throughout these two dates, our Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo will compete against other

schools from throughout the State. Times will be available in a few weeks. Please check the music department

website for more information.

For more info, please visit: http://www.brunswickmusic.org

For more info on Music in Our Schools Month, please visit:

http://musiced.nafme.org/events/music-in-our-schools-month/

I hope to see some of you at these performances. We thank you for the constant support of the Brunswick High

School Music Department. We are very fortunate to have such a strong support for music in our schools. Thank

you so much for all you do to encourage and foster the love for music in our students.

BHS PLAYERS BHS PLAYERS PRESENT "WEST SIDE STORY"

BHS PLAYERS will present their spring musical "WEST SIDE STORY" Thursday March 20 at 7PM, Friday March 21 at 7PM and Saturday March 22 at 2PM and 7PM in Crooker Theater. With a cast of more than 60 students, West Side Story is sure to be an amazing follow-up to last year's sellout smash "Grease". West Side Story is the modern adaptation of the Romeo and Juliet tale set in 1950's New York City. When the American street gang The Jets clashes with the Puerto Rican gang The Sharks, trouble begins for unlikely lovers Tony and Maria who are from opposite sides, and the classic story unfolds. West Side Story is, perhaps, best known for it's incredible dance numbers and unforgettable music, and audience members will be thrilled with the wildly intense and hauntingly beautiful dance numbers created by choreographer Linda Gardiner and executed brilliantly by the cast. With an original set designed by Bill Clarke and a full pit 12 piece professional orchestra conducted by Courtney Babbige, West Side Story will be a lavish production of epic proportions not to be missed! Don't forget to get your tickets early at the Crooker Theater box office Mon.-Fri 2:30-5:30 beginning March 3rd!

TICKETS FOR BHS PLAYERS' "WEST SIDE STORY" NOW ON SALE!!!

A review of the policy is as follows:

Students must complete a minimum of thirty (30) hours of community service as a graduation

requirement.

Students need to earn five hours before their 11th grade year and fifteen before their

12th grade year to obtain off campus privileges.

It should be noted, in 2008 the Brunswick School Board amended the policy to allow 8th graders to earn up to 10 hours towards their thirty hour requirement for graduation at Bruns-

wick High School.

Certain job shadow opportunities may compliment the spirit of this requirement while also di-rectly satisfying career objectives suggested by the Maine Learning Results. To the extent that

these opportunities exist, pre-arranged and approved job shadow experiences may be used to fulfill

up to ten hours of the thirty hour requirement.
