Foreword

This European Standard has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 208,Elastomeric seals for joints in pipework and pipelines, the Secretariat of which is held byBSI.

This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either bypublication of an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by January 2001, andconflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by January 2001.

According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations, the national standardsorganizations of the following countries are bound to implement this European Standard:Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland,Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerlandand the United Kingdom.

This standard should be used where appropriate with product standards which specifyperformance requirements for joints.

A European Standard will be prepared for microbiological deterioration requirements andwhen published it is intended that materials comply with the requirements of that standard.

It is recommended that third party inspection be carried out at least twice a year withoutprevious notice, the assessment body complying with the requirements of EN 45011 andEN 45012 or equivalent.

Part 1 of this standard is based on ISO 4633 and ISO 9631 bringing these two sets ofrequirements (for cold and hot water respectively) under one specification. The majorchanges from ISO 4633 and ISO 9631 have been to incorporate requirements for effecton water quality and ozone resistance. The emphasis in respect of low temperaturetesting has moved away from hardness measurement to compression set, which is morediscriminating.

Part 2 has been prepared in response to requests from CEN/TC 155 for a materialspecification for thermoplastic elastomer seals for use in conjunction with non-pressurethermoplastic pipe systems.

Part 4 has been prepared in response to requests from those sections of the pipelineindustry which employ cast polyurethane seals.

This standard should be used where appropriate with product standards which specifyperformance requirements for joints.

Seals and pipe joints using cellular materials of vulcanized rubber should be designed andtested to take into account the different requirements compared with those specified inPart 1 of this standard.

The Annexes A and B are normative. Annex C is informative.

1 Scope

This standard specifies requirements for materials used in vulcanized rubber seals ofcellular materials for non-pressurized drainage, sewerage and rainwater systems and non-pressure non-potable water supply (continuous flow up to 45 ºC).

General requirements for the finished joint seals are also given; any additionalrequirements called for by the particular application are specified in the relevant productstandards taking into account that the performance of pipe joints is a function of the sealmaterial properties, seal geometry and pipe joint design.

This standard is applicable to joint seals for pipeline materials of vitrified clay, fibrecement, concrete, reinforced concrete, plastics and glass-reinforced plastics.

Joint seals made with an enclosed void as part of their design are included in the scope ofthis European Standard.

Annex A (normative)

Determination of compression stress

The compressive force necessary to deform a seal section by 25 % is determined. Oncalculating the compression stress, the compressive force is related to the test piece areabearing against the pressure in the deformed state.

Number of test pieces: 3.

Test piece dimensions: Whole seal or seal section of 250 mm length.

Compressive stress: In direction of compression of the ring in service.

Deformation: (25 +/- 1)% relative to the seal thickness in the direction ofcompression.

Measurement: 15 min after deformation.

Test temperature: (23 +/- 2) ºC.

Test device: See ISO 3384.

Test procedure

The test pieces are deformed between two steel plates at the height specified. The topsteel plate (diameter 38 mm) is arranged at the lower end of a plunger and can have directelectric contact (metal on metal) with the surrounding housing. The force is thenincreased. The separation of the top plate from the housing can either be determined bya change in electrical resistance or additional compressions of no more than 0,05 mm forstress-strain type machines, see Figure A.1.

The compression stress results from the force F applied at the moment of the indicatedchange of electrical resistance, can be related to the test piece surface bearing againstthe plunger.

The compressive force is applied uniformly within 30 s. To determine the contact surfacesbetween the test piece in its deformed state and the plunger, blue-print paper is used tomake a print of the contact surface on paper which is planimetered after the test.

Annex B (normative)

Determination of splice strength

B.1 General

Seals spliced from vulcanized rubber shall be subjected to the following test.

The test shall be performed either on the seal itself or on a test piece 200 mm long withthe splice at the mid-point, i.e. such that there is a length of 100 mm on each side of thesplice. Make two reference marks, equidistant from the splice and 50 mm apart, on thetest piece. Before applying the tension the splice joint shall be conditioned at (23 ± 2) ºCby compressing to 50 % in the direction of compression, 10 times over a period notgreater than 5 min.

B.2 Product control test

Extend the seal or test piece at a rate of (8,3 +/- 0,8) mm/s until the elongation betweenthe reference marks is 100 %. Maintain this extension for 5 min in air at (50 +/- 2) ºC andexamine the seal or test piece under tension.

B.3 Type test

Extend six seals or test pieces at a rate of (8,3 +/- 0,8) mm/s until the elongation betweenthe reference marks is 50 % and condition for seven days at (45 +/- 2) ºC under tension, three test pieces in diluted sulphuric acid of pH 2 and three test pieces in diluted sodiumhydroxide of pH 12. Then condition in air for 2 h at (50 +/- 2) ºC and examine.

Annex C (informative)

Guidance on storage of seals

At all stages between manufacture and use the seals should be stored in accordance withthe recommendations of ISO 22301).

The following points should be noted:

(a) The storage temperature should be below 25 ºC and preferably below 15 ºC.

(b) The seals should be protected from light, in particular strong sunlight andartificial light with a high ultra-violet content.

(c) The seals should not be stored in a room with any equipment capable ofgenerating ozone, e.g. mercury vapour lamps, high voltage electrical equipment, which may give rise to electrical sparks or silent electrical discharges.

(d) The seals should be stored in a relaxed condition free from tension, compressionor other deformation. For instance, they should not be suspended from any part ofthe circumference.

(e) The seals should be maintained in a clean condition.

Annex ZA (informative)

Clauses of this European Standard addressing the provisions of theEU Construction Products Directive

ZA.1 Scope and clauses of the European Standard addressing the essentialcharacteristics of the EU Construction Products Directive

With reference to clause 1, this Annex ZA has the same scope as clause 1.

This European Standard has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by theEuropean Commission and the European Free Trade Association.

The clauses of this European Standard shown in Table ZA.1 meet the requirements of themandate given under the EU Construction Products Directive (89/106).

Compliance with these clauses confers a presumption of fitness of seals made of cellularmaterials of vulcanized rubber covered by this European Standard for their intended use.

WARNING Other requirements and other EU Directives, not affecting the fitness forintended use, may be applicable to a construction product falling within the scope of thisstandard.

NOTE In addition to any specific clauses relating to dangerous substances contained in this standard, there may beother requirements applicable to the products falling within its scope (e.g. transposed European legislation and nationallaws, regulations and administrative provisions). In order to meet the provisions of the EU Construction ProductsDirective, these requirements need also to be complied with, when and where they apply.

NOTE An informative database of European and national provisions on dangerous substances is available at theConstruction web site on EUROPA (CREATE, accessed through http://europa.eu.int).

In this case, manufacturers placing their products on the market ofthese MSs are not obliged to determine nor declare the performance of their products with regard to this characteristic and the option “No performance determined” (NPD) in theinformation accompanying the CE marking (see clause ZA.3) may be used. The NPDoption may be used, however, where the characteristic is subject to a threshold level.
