Please can I remind members that all the committee are volunteers; we all respond as soonas possible and some positions, for example, the librarian in particular, involve a lot of time-

consuming research to find out details for members. We sometimes go on holiday, so please be patient, we will do our best to respond quickly.

When contacting us by email please put BSA in the subject line when emailing committee members as someof them have very spam like addresses at yahoo or hotmail and can inadvertently be bounced at times.

Hello, after being in the BSAOC for a number of years and having arrangedmany events for the club with still more to do, I would like to make some commentson the club’s Open Day.

Some time back in the 80s we had a great time at Coombe Park near Coventrymainly just Saturday night camping then I think! But a lot of folks attended over theweekend. The council then closed it and put the rent up as it was going to be aposh restaurant so a new venue was to be found!

Lutterworth Rugby club was the next venue and it was a good place and theprice was right and lots still turned out as did the auto jumblers plus campingstarted on a Friday night. This went on for a few years then it was decided to holdthe National Rally and Open Day together (Saturday and Sunday) but over a bankholiday weekend (i.e. 4 days). This was to allow national and branch members timeto travel down and back home in a reasonable time so another venue was tofound!

The place was Scraptoft University rugby club and this was another place thatattracted lots of people but not a lot of autojumblers and the reason not a lot ofold spares available plus eBay and it’s got worse since!

A change in the committee and it moved again this time to Billing aftersomeone said we should have it like the old days just a one day event! But still nota lot of Autojumblers as classic parts were on the decline and YES! eBay again, buta good turn out of folks out with their familys looking at all the events going on inthe park plus the price was ok and those with kids enjoyed it! Till the price wentup and made it very dear for any person to camp in duck muck

Next was a move to Wicksteed Park where a good price for all was got, BUTit was a long way from the entrance plus not a lot of Autojumblers and propertoilets, we also got the French auto car club in the next field, this put a lot of peopleoff for the next year!

Then Cliff Harrison took over the following year and it was good because theraffle had a surplus and was used to pay for the room and food in the main hall! But still not many Autojumblers (see reason above) also we had reasonable ratesfor camping, the next year we had the B-B-Q done by members plus the newtoilet facilities was opened still only two jumbler’s and one of them went home onthe Saturday night and finally last year was rough as no Autojumblers and it wastoo expensive for a single person to camp, plus no one wanted to ride their bikesround! Plus lots came in Caravans (and yes I was one of them!).

So let the membership decide! Do we have a Rugby club again and go backto basics or pay a lot of money out for Wicksteed Park and entertainment for thekids? And remember all the good parts are now on eBay

After all it is a bike club open day! And there are lots of places that will haveus.

BBrraanncchh NNeewwssThe club night was well attended; once again meeting at the Barley Mow at

Cosgrove where the landlord held a sale from his collection of motor cycle books andin so doing raised a reasonable sum of money for a local charity. It was decided that wewill make this our permanent Head Quarters for future meetings. The full details of thepub are The Barley Mow, 7 The Stocks, Cosgrove, MK19 7JD – their website iswww.thebarleymowcosgrove.co.uk.

The last Sunday ride at our normal meeting place of the Super Sausage café sawanother good turnout with several just for breakfast and a chat. This left Nick, Kelvin andmyself possibly going for a ride and we came to a mutual decision that as it wasextremely cold, and we all had a reasonable ride home we would forego any deviationsfrom this. In my own case, my BSA although starting reasonably well then stopped, andI suspect then thought it was too cold, as it would not restart so I had to swap tosomething Japanese with an electric start. Still it made a quick ride home avoidinghyperthermia!!!!

We have started to put together an events calendar for the branch, for 2012, andI will try and get this together during February (please check our website). I am lookingfor volunteers to lead the summer rides so please let me know if you can help us.

That’s all, cheers for now.Dennis

Eight members attended the 8th January meeting all on BSAs, not bad consideringthe time of year. Certainly enough of us to have a pleasant conversation and enjoy eachother’s company. Well, I assume we do. Must give a mention to Colin now a regular atour meetings riding in on a B31, his bike made famous by appearing in The Star. I’ll gethim to autograph my copy or put his thumbprint on it if he can’t write. Thirteen of usrode in to the last Sunday meeting in January. Together with Dougie, who was part ofthe historic bike movement before it became the historic bike movement, and GeorgeChiswell also in attendance, we were treated to a concise history of the BSA Companyand all who worked there. Recollections such as these need to be written down to makeinteresting Star magazine articles. Let’s put the entire membership to sleep. We werelater joined by a bewildered and confused looking individual who came and sat in withus. John Farrell paying one of his rare visits to our meeting. Did we know the BSA factoryhad shut down?

The site for the Birmingham branch beer and lack of sleep festival will be the sameas last year, the Kevindale Campsite right next door to The Engine and Tender publichouse, now closed. The decision is based on most of our visitors knowing the area andlocation of the site plus the owner has promised to upgrade the facilities to includethings like water. A raffle will be held over the weekend, which will go towards payingfor the barbeque so any donations for prizes will be most welcome. Apart from afterdinner mints.

Branch meetings in March continue to be 2nd and last Sundays in the month, midday until 1. 30pm. April is the month whereby the meetings are changed to the 2ndSunday and last Monday in the month, the Monday meeting being an evening gatheringat 7pm.

Take care Phil

A chilly Sunday in mid January brought eleven of us together on seven machinesfor the first ride out of 2012. We had a very pleasant journey in the watery wintersunshine through some of Cambridgeshire’s rural roads calling at a kart racing track(photo) for a very welcoming hot drink. We watched the would-be Lewis Hamiltons ina couple of race sessions – they seemed to be having enormous fun but I certainly didn’tnotice any one to threaten Sebastian Vettel’s F1 title in the very near future. Ed was reallyfeeling the effects of the cold and he was certainly not helped by Steve’s comment of“the cold doesn’t bother me!” It was then that I noticed the flex to his heated vesthanging out below his jacket but he insisted that it had not been connected during thejourney…ummm??

We set off on the return journey to John’s house where his wife, Daphne anddaughter, Teresa had laid on a magnificent spread for lunch of chilli and rice, bakedspuds, pasta, veggie shepherds pie followed by lemon meringue or apple pie…..tremendous, thank you! Only one problem, once we were warm again and well fed itwas difficult to raise the enthusiasm to go back out in the cold for the ride home but Ed(who is from the North and calls us Southern Jesses) succumbed to the offer of a warmand cosy ride home in a car with heated seats!!

The past couple of years Andrew and I have travelled to the John Bull Rally andthis year Steve has decided to join us on his ‘69 A65L for the trip to Zonhoven at theend of April. I reckon he may have been tempted by a couple of events on the rallyprogramme, namely, the Belgian special beer tasting event on Friday and the trip tothe gin museum on the Sunday.

The Hampshire Branch of the BSAOC held its Annual General Meeting at the endof January in the quiet of the Dining Room at the Bold Forester. It turned out to be alonger meeting than usual and quite a bit of ground was covered. Thanks to all 17 whoattended on a cold evening. This amounts to some 25% of the current membership, spread across a large county.

Chairman Bob opened the meeting with a few remarks and Roy gave a briefTreasurer's report. The accounts show a current account balance just over £100 downin a year where quite a bit has been spent on the project C15 (this spend remaining inthe assets). Similarly my Secretary's report was perfunctory. Jim Gurney took overproceedings as temporary Chair and the committee duly stood down. Bob and Royboth said they were happy to stand down if there were any offers to take over fromthem. There were no such offers forthcoming so both were duly elected. I stated mywish to resign as Secretary but sadly there was no volunteer to take on the role. My mainreason for wishing to go was that after some six years is that I feel that a new face withfresh ideas would be beneficial to the running of the branch, and give it a new injectionof energy. Reluctantly I agreed to continue as Secretary for a further year with onecaveat, that I would write the branch notes just once every quarter. Andy & Debby andGary volunteered to take on the in between months. Hopefully others will step forwardon an occasional basis to complete a task which is important to the running of the club.It ought to be more interesting to read the notes with a wider variety of written input! So agreeing to stand I was duly re-elected for a final year. So members, you have mostof 2012 to find a replacement. This is not an empty threat. It really is not that demandinga position so come on, why not offer to have ago in shaping the future? I will be morethan happy to explain the duties to any interested member and take on an AssistantSecretary during this year to show the ropes and smooth the changes. And I remaincontent to continue to run the www.hampshirebsa.org.uk website if desired for theforeseeable future.

Gerry, Gary and Alison all agreed to continue in their duties as Events Organisersand Assistant Treasurer and were voted on again. Then business went on to thecompilation of a list of events for the year. This will be a mix of old favourites and somenew ones. Gary is to produce a draft list for committee approval if required, and thefinalised version will be available at meetings and posted on the website. Next the C15project was discussed and spend agreed to finish it off (notably a decent exhaust system, any offers?). The electrics need to be finished, yours truly will get to it Gerry. The final

feeding us all on the last night of the international. Ladies award went to Janet, whoshould also get a bravery award for riding anything her hubby Nigel has put together!Best bike award went to Mike’s Goldie looking B33, which he had rebuilt after a car u-turned in front of him less than an hour after he’d bought it sending him over the bonnetand smashing it up. Best attendance at national events was won by myself, I also sharedthe hard luck award and the Dave Brown memorial trophy (for most trips abroad) withMike Kelly. I’ve been in the branch for 22 years and have always managed to not win thehard luck award, however I did it in style my engine going bang on the Dutch/Belgianborder. (Incidentally I am still after a barrel for my M33 see ad in bazaar). Last trophywent to Dennis for the best run out of the year. Our last run of the year was the boxingday run to sunny but windswept Redcar led by Mick with Dennis taking us through thebackstreets and onto the sea front to the greasy spoon delights of the Zetland café. Afterscoffing a black pudding and bacon butty we made our way home, the end of anotherriding year.

January started with our usual formal meeting to discuss the 2012 calendar runsout, who’s leading etc. We also had a quiz night (I won!) and a parts auction night, gettingrid of some tat out of the shed although ten per cent of sellers’ takings went into thecharity fund. Our camp will be at Ugthorpe lodge again; dates are June 29 to July 1st.(t.b.c.)

b.f.n. Beezajohn.

With the weather doing its best to freeze the balls of a brass monkey although dueto the metal thieves that’s the least of its worries, its still been possible to get out andabout for a jolly good blast around the local lanes in deepest ESSEX. Big Dave [aka Mrpinky] Evans has been doing a sterling job with his navigational skills although we doseem to come across a lot of pubs on the way. I suspect this is a result of a misspent youth.Ray[ the chef ] Trigwell he’s also the treasurer and please no comments about cookingand books as it doesn’t go down to well unlike his gut busting breakfasts at our campingtrips during the summer they are truly special. As is the way of things in winter lots ofaction in garages and sheds with spanners and tears as the fettling of old brit ironbecomes all consuming in the race to be ready for the coming years riding seasonwhether it’s a shiny example or an oily but just as loved old clunker. Here’s to a safe butexhilarating riding year in 2012.

Jones the Steam

I know that Christmas is by now a distant memory, but as this is first report of 2012I feel that I should include those events, which took place in December. The Branchenjoyed an excellent Christmas dinner on Saturday December 17th at The White Hart, the food and service were first class and the 30 members attending had an extremelygood night. At the dinner it was decided that to show our appreciation for all the helpand support given to the branch we would make Tim and Lesley (the landlords of theWhite Hart) Honorary Branch Members. At the following Wednesday club meeting aframed certificate of Honorary Branch Membership was presented to Tim and Lesleyand has now been displayed in a prime position over the bar. Needless to say they wereboth delighted.

On a more sombre note I must sadly report that long time member Carol Watkinspassed away suddenly on December 18th. Carol was a very good friend of Gaius andwill be sadly missed. A card with condolences was sent on behalf of the branch.

The Branch Annual General Meeting was held at the White Hart on January 18thwith over 30 members in attendance. Highlight of the meeting was the presentation ofthe “Gold Star Trophy”. This is a very detailed model of a Clubman’s Goldie which willbe awarded to the club member who is voted as showing outstanding service to thebranch during the year. This is the first year for this award and the first name on thetrophy being Angie and Steve. Both members contributed a huge amount of time andeffort building the club stand and helping out at shows. Well deserved to both. TheAGM was followed by a buffet and disco, another good evening at the White Hart.

there is time left at the end of their day a possible ride in the carriages could be arrangedat £3.00 p.p.

There is plenty of indoor space should it be wet with an all day bar. This, is whatcould be a great camp it is on the 3rd~4th~5th of August, I know this date ties with ourfriends at Hampshire branch and I/we are truly sorry but as a lot of North Staffs membershave other commitments and Foxfield other events it is unavoidable, and Hampshirecamp is some 200 miles away so hopefully it will not effect to many members. So it justremains for me to say get your camping kit out and join us, and keep watching for moreinfo. You can visit their web site at www.foxfieldsrailway.co.uk

Happy Ridings Colin

Hi all, this months meeting attracted the lowest number of members ever, onlythree turned up (I’m sure this is not the shape of things to come). Seems man flu laid acouple out and some others had pre arranged commitments. I fell foul of events out ofmy control and was still getting customers vehicles back to them at 7.30p.m. By the timeI got home and had my tea going out again was very low on the list of things to do. Dongave my apologies and feedback on the night’s proceedings. Most of the natterrevolved around Brian’s stories of his continental tour in the late sixties with all it’sadventures and mishaps, not least being the lack of biker friendly hotels with rooms tolet. The night was still enjoyed by all and I don’t doubt it passed very quickly as this yearis. It’s already going at a rush and my good intentions for the winter i.e. hibernating in thegarage and getting to grips with the A7SS have been dashed by the mild weather, mybikes aren’t getting much rest (I am glad to say). The Sunbeam is going great andbetween Christmas and New Year I did a short reliability run of around 30 miles, noproblem for the old girl, she ate up the miles with ease, not bad for a 71 year old, NONOT ME the bike. The M20 is as good as ever and has getting some runs, glad to saywithout any hitches. I hope the weather holds out till spring and we can get some clubruns in but for now we’ll just enjoy ‘em.

Hello all, the main event in January was our annual social / Christmas dinner. A grandtotal of 27 members / wives / girlfriends / etc risked the wrath of the Knutsford parkingattendants to meet at the secluded Courtyard restaurant. In fact it is so secluded severalof us couldn’t find it, even some who hadgone there last year. However eventuallyall were assembled for pre meal canapésand an ingenious “ feely “ quiz dreamt upby Steve the milk. This involvedeveryday things in numbered socks, which we were assured were freshlylaundered, strung round everyone’sneck which had to be felt & identified -thus ensuring everyone should meeteveryone else. A good idea Steve, justfor next time put the numbers the rightway up.

A fine meal was topped off by LesB’s wife (and master - mistress? - chef Linda) who did a grand South Cheshire BSAOCcake, complete with Cheshire cat. See website for pics. Social sec Dave had organised a“ Pin the tail on “ game, in this case pin the badge on an A10. I didn’t do too well at this,my excuse being I haven’t got an A10 - A65 or B31 and I could have done better. However none of the other male members present could do it either - perhaps thisexplains the time taken to complete some of the rebuilds that are going on. That left 3of the girls to have a final “ pin off “ with Jan emerging badge champ. Well done Davefor setting it all up.

We use this meeting to present the annual branch awards to commemoratemembers achievements over the past year. The Restoration Cup went to Alan Gill for

topic on the agenda was the attendance awards competition. Gary has won this for thepast 3 years, but it was agreed to continue with the same points regime. It would seemunfair to change the rules just to achieve a closer contest, and it is not an inevitableoutcome that Gary will continue to win in any event. You just need to come on a BSAmore regularly. There was no other business to report here.

A big thanks to Jim for the use of the room and for the sandwiches and chips, andhis continuing hospitality and general support.

Signs of Spring should be upping the energy levels by about now with luck, saprising and all.

As I write these notes,January has all butdisappeared where doesthe time go? Near the endof December we had abike run witch we call theChristmas pudding run, alittle later than normal butstill well attended. 12riders and one pillion metup at the car park near thebottom of Charing hill,Ashford, Malc Folwell tookthe lead with Colin as tailend Charlie, the glorious weather made a most enjoyable ride even better through nearempty country lanes. Our first stop was a nice cafe near Whitstable, all day breakfastsand cups of tea were soon being served up witch went down very well. After a well-earned rest some of the group decided to ride on to the Butchers Arms at Herne a smallvillage nr Herne Bay to sample the local ale while the rest made their way home. No realproblems except for Shaun’s M21 main jet decided to block up, a few sharp blips on thethrottle and a hand over the air intake soon cleared the problem and he disappearedoff into the sunset. Our annual club dinner this year had a few changes it was organisedby Malc and Janet Folwell, a new venue was chosen witch was the Plough at Langley nrMaidstone, also a change of time to a midday meal witch worked out very well, 35members enjoyed a very good venue with plenty of space, a very good meal with abonus of five choices of real ale, we had a club raffle witch will boost the club funds.Thank you to all those who donated prizes, well done to Malc and Janet. A good turnout at club night to start the New Year, safe riding everyone.

Hello from North Staffs,Branch nights still continue to be well attended, the cold, wet and salt putting of

even the most hardened motor cyclist from attending on their trusty steeds, still thebetter weather is well on the way. Our annual run down to Cravern Arms to theWistanstow Classic Bike Show is on the 25th March with meeting points at The Swan atForton on the Eccleshall to Newport road at 9am and also at Telford at 9.30ish.

Our Summer Camp is now sorted and we will be holding it up at The FoxfieldRailway Centre Blythe Bridge, Stoke on Trent. Unfortunately there has to be a chargeand after lengthy discussions with the Foxfields events promoter I have got it sorted at£3.50 p.p/p.n. per tent if there are two in a tent there will be an extra 50p p.n.for thesecond person, Caravans and Motor homes will be £7.00 p.n. and again extra adults 50pp.n. also children over fourteen 50p.p.n. this extra cost is to help cover a free BBQ or Pien Peas Supper on the Saturday night the weather being the decider on this, wet indoors, dry out doors. A ride out is planned for Saturday, with a Raffle later. An over night toilet, and shower are available.

This particular weekend is a Foxfield driver training weekend and they tell me if

his pretty blue lightning, a bike much admired on our recent trip to Claire House - andthat was by Triumph owners at that. The Chairman’s Cup I was proud to award to JoeCole for his superb organisation of our Lakes trip (which is to be repeated this year -going even further afield, further awood and further aforest also apparently). The TomWarburton Cup for most miles covered by a branch member was ably won by Stevethe milk Edwards, who journeyed far north, far south & all points in between and on a250 at that. True spirit. I was totalled up by keeper of the book and box Brian C asattendance leader, although as sec & later chair Ifeel duty bound to attend all meetings. HoweverI have promised to stay in more.

Further light (in more ways than one)entertainment was provided by Steve the milk -yes he is a milkman, and now even Welsh. He hadbought along his Ariel 3 for those feelingenergetic; a fair bit of LPA needed going UP theyard with no run up. He later had it featured in thelocal paper using it to deliver milk on part of hisroute. This led to a long-standing BSA owner (andcustomer) coming to our end of month meeting.People will come - no prizes for guessing the filmfrom the quote.

And finally. Life is like a racetrack. It’s theturns that make it interesting and challenging.TTFN Bill

Greetings from South Derbyshire BSAOC – “Hey – it’s cold out there!!”Well, we at South Derbyshire, thought that we would start 2012 in good spirits with

our annual “January 1st Hangover Run” - for the past several years this has been to theHurt Arms @ Ambergate and so (minus yours truly & Memsahib – Wintering in verysunny and warmish Oregon this time with ‘Sprog’) the convoy set off from MarkeatonPark Island Derby. Once again (thankfully) an uneventful but very pleasant journey.Arriving a wee bit too early for 12.00 opening, the ‘assembled’ then discovered thatthere were problems in the Pub’s kitchen which would have meant a 2 hour delay withfood so it was hurriedly decided to find somewhere else – The Bridge Inn @ Duffieldso off they trundled. They were met with very warm welcome, lots of available tablesand instant (well almost) food from kitchen. Think we shall return here next year!

Sadly, due to an internal whoopsie, the Talk by Sidecar Ace & ex-BSA employeeMick Biddice was postponed – good news is that he was available for February 1st – sothis we look forward in eager anticipation – watch this space! OK, so not a good start tothe year, but the “Bike” quiz with the local Triumph Owners Club did see us force a draw!Well done to all who managed to attend. Great fun was had, but I’m still unsure aboutsome of the drawings – were they really peoples ideas of Bikes??? Finally, the Branch’sAnnual Dinner, a little down on numbers, but still well attended. A good carvery mealat Long Easton Golf Club with all well fed. (Neil & Ken being in their usual fine form –how do they remember all of these jokes?) Once again, Steve managed a fiendish quizfor ‘afters’ and with great relief we learned that a cow’s sweat glands are in it’s nose andthat the tallest Cathedral spire in the world is in Ulm, Germany – 161.5mtrs – now ‘nota lot of people know that’!

2012 has finally arrived and it’s cold and frosty as I type. Wishing all of you a verysafe year of good riding and NO whooshes! OK?

Stay calm and be careful out there.“Chrome up, rubber down! “Roosterman

Well folks, we’ve agreed on the dates for our next Branch Camp which will be the18th to 20th May. By the time you read this, we will have had an outing to the venue tofinalise plans. I’ll post more information as soon as all the ‘I’s are dotted and the ‘T’s arecrossed..

Our Branch night’s continue to be well attended with much talk of all aspects ofBSA. Many members are fully into projects with Bob, Tim, Pete, Graeme, Alan, Roger andmyself getting stuck into our respective restorations. As an idea to get us out of the shedfor a while though, I suggested a Branch trip to the National Motorcycle Museum. Thiswent down well, but as yet we’ve not drawn up plans, but I’m sure something will beorganized soon…

The International in Sweden is now in the full planning stage, but as yet we still arenot sure of which means some of us will get to the rally, but this will hopefully work itselfout in good time..

Well that’s all for now, so keep them projects on the boil!! Ian aka Frank

Not a lot to report this month from the Wyre Forest Branch.27th January we hadour annual Christmas dinner at the Brassier in Kidderminister along with our other halves.A good meal with lots of banter made an enjoyable evening.

I’ve had a very quiet winter so far, none of my bikes requiring any maintenance, although the Rocket 3 will soon need a new rear tyre. I plan to do the John Bull Rally onher being its 30th Anniversary this year.

Our Chairman Roger Bayliss has a nasty health scare towards the latter half of lastyear. I am happy to report he is now feeling fit and well. We all wish him all the best for2012.

Other news Keith is on the look out for a very very cheap BSA. We are hoping Johnwill have his C15 on the road this year. Mike’s sorted the lighting out on his A10 Combo.Tony will have the B40SS ready just as soon as the mudguards are back from thechromers. Lindsay is having a rear carrier fitted to his A10. Me thinks he may be thinkingof doing some camping! We shall see!

We also wonder when ‘Ross’ will finish his home improvements, and get on andrebuild his A10RGS; we miss him on the camping trips. Dan the Man is looking forwardto getting more miles on the clock, aren’t we all.

So keep smilingDave Clarke

A KNUTSFORD dairy decided to deliver milk to one of their bestcustomers in a slightly different way on Monday morning – on a threewheeled scooter. Steve Edwards from Sheldons popped into the Courtyard cafe onMonday, January 23 on his BSA Ariel 3 to deliver their daily order. Steve said: “The three wheeler I am sat on is a BSA Ariel 3 made in1970, it was made when the company was nearly broke and thishelped to see it off. “It was aimed at a female/shopping market but failed on both countscosting BSA thousands in unwanted and unsold stock. “I bought it and have restored it as a bit of fun and to advertiseSheldons. The reason I bought a BSA is because I own a couple ofthem and I am an active member of the South Cheshire BSA club.” The BSA club meet twice amonth at the WhippingStocks Pub in Over Peover. You don’t have to own a bike, but just have an interest inanything BSA and newmembers are made verywelcome.

Front Brake on a 1961 Super Rocket

I have recently purchased a 1961 Super Rocket, which has turned out to be a bitof a project. Don’t most bikes that you buy turn out to be a project??? LOL

Anyway, I have been trying to identify the front hub that is fitted to this bike, as Ineed to buy new brake shoes for it.

To look at, the front hub looks very much like a normal BSA Full Width Iron Hubexcept that the spokes on the brake plate side are laced into an external flange, rather like on the single sided brake hubs. The spokes on the hubcap side arelaced into the hub as normal. It is an 8” hub but the drum inside the hub is muchwider than the normal A10 brake drum. The existing brake shoes measure 119/32” or 41 mm in width, which ever you prefer. Also, as you can see from thephoto, the brake plate is also different from the standard A10 brake plate.

Can anyone help by identifying this hub and, more importantly, can anyone helpwith a supplier for new brake shoes.

The other option might be to have the existing shoes relined.

Kind Regards and Safe Biking

MCN/Carole Nash London InternationalMotorcycle Show – Excel – Docklands – 2nd to

5th Feb 2012

BSAOC East Sussex was invited to exhibit in the classic bike section of theMCN/Carole Nash London International Motorcycle Show which is held at theExcel Exhibition Centre in London’s Docklands every February. The branch managed to assemble a broad spectrum of BSA motorcyclesrepresenting the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s which made a very impressive displayunder the banner of BSAOC. Tony Reeves exhibited his 1960 Super Rocket650cc, Martin Guiver exhibited his 1959 Shooting Star 500cc, I exhibited my1956 Goldie 350cc and Chris Chapman exhibited two bikes, his 1971 B25 250ccand a 1963 D7 Bantam. The instructions from the show organisers were that the club stands would beready built and carpeted for our arrival. However, all the bikes needed to be insideExcel and on the club stands by 12.00 noon on ‘set up day’ Wednesday 1stFebruary 2012, as the carpet in the ‘walkways’ between the stands was to be fittedon Wednesday afternoon and no vehicle movements would be allowed inside theexhibition hall after the 12.00 noon ‘cut off’.So, with a very early start for Wednesday morning in mind the bikes were loadedup on Tuesday evening ready for the journey to London on Wednesday morning.Tony put his Super Rocket and Martin’s Shooting Star on his trailer, which was tobe towed by his 4x4 whist Chris’s B25 and Bantam and my Goldie were loadedinto Chris’s Transit van.We made very good time on the journey up to Excel. Tony and Martin were inTony’s 4x4 whilst Chris, Antony and I were in the Transit van. We debated aboutwhich tunnel to use, Blackwall or Dartford and decided on Dartford as theBlackwall Tunnel is very prone to traffic jams.We arrived at Excel and negotiated the queuing and unloading system they use.The bikes were inside the exhibition hall by about 11.00am. The stand that we hadbeen allocated by the show organisers was in a brilliant location. We were luckyenough to have a ‘corner plot’ with two open sides located right by the ClassicBike Magazine’s – Classic Bike of the Year display. We had the bikes positioned on the club stand and the display banners and clubflag all set up by early afternoon. The ‘lecterns’ that Tony had made looked veryprofessional with the ‘write up’ on each of the bikes displayed. The ‘drip trays’

that Chris had made also looked brilliant. The ‘Club Flag’ very kindly loaned bySteve Foden and the Star Magazines and BSAOC Membership Application Formsvery kindly provided by Mike Stephenson and Phil Bull completed the display. The BSAOC club stand looked every bit as good as the professionalmanufacturers stands. With the stand set up, we headed home as Thursday wasgoing to be another very early start. The plan for Thursday 2nd February, the first day of the show was for everyone totravel in Tony’s car. Sadly however, Tony’s car decided not to ‘play’ that day so

Tony travelled with Russell Batchelor whist Chris and Antony travelled in my carwith me. The only mistake we made was to try the Blackwall Tunnel. This provedto be far from a good idea because, although it made the journey slightly shorterin distance it made it somewhat longer in time due to the traffic jam at the tunnel.Still we arrived in good time and looked forward to the first public day of theshow. There was a very steady ‘foot fall’ past the stand and much interest from thevisiting public in the bikes and in BSAOC. Friday 3rd February was another early start; however Tony needed to ‘take theday off’ to fix his car so Tony Scrace and Martin travelled in my car with me. Wedecided not to use the Blackwall Tunnel after the previous days experience andopted for the Dartford Crossing instead. We arrived in good time and had anotherbusy day with many very interested visitors to the stand.

The plan was again for everyone to travel in Tony’s car on the Saturday 4thFebruary but this time the very cold weather intervened. Tony had ‘water supply’problems due to frozen pipes which he needed to resolve so Peter Stetchertravelled with me in my car whilst John Locke and Jill Jackson made their ownway to Excel. Saturday proved to be the busiest day of the show with muchinterest in the BSAOC club stand and the bikes. Many membership applicationforms were handed out.Saturday night the weather really intervened and on Sunday morning we weregreeted by a blanket of snow. Sunday 5th February was the last day of the showand the instructions from the show organisers was that all the bikes needed to beout of the exhibition hall by 10.00pm on Sunday evening. With that in mind weneeded to again travel with Tony’s 4x4 and trailer and the Transit van in order tobe able to bring the bikes home at the end of the show.Tony and Martin travelled in Tony’s 4x4 whilst Chris and I travelled in the Transitvan. The roads would best be described as ‘interesting’. We left home a littleearlier and took it very steady in the snow and got to Excel without too manyproblems. The show was not nearly as busy on the Sunday as probably theweather conditions had deterred a lot of people. We still had a very good interestin the BSAOC stand and the bikes though. The show closed to the public at 18.00 and we commenced to ‘break down’ the

stand. We had the bikes loaded in their respective transport by 19.30. The journeyhome is the snow and ice was very steady indeed. After all, we didn’t want to riskdamaging the bikes. We arrived home at about 23.00, very tired but very happythat we had staged such a successful display for BSAOC. My sincere thanks to allwho supported us and to all who helped our efforts by ‘manning’ the stand at theshow. I have it on very good authority from the show organiser’s that we will be invitedback next year, so pencil the first week of February 2013 into your diary now.Kind Regards and Safe BikingGeoff KingBSAOC East Sussex
