SHEDDING TIME

Mebbo the Ed

Sorry about the lateness of this issue. My son decided to get married the weekend before last so much

dithering was carried out. Apart from that we have arrived at the 55th International at Hall's Gap, and

early photos from the epic journey down are on the back page. Needless to say, it was not without

(ahem) incident, but the gang managed to arrive safely. Good weather too by the looks of it.

As this is the second last Banter for 2018, below is the usual push to renew membership. There is also a

renewal form attached for those with changes to address, email, bikes etc. We are bouncing around 100

financial members these days, so we have been looking at ways and means to invigorate the Club and get

more members in. Any suggestions welcomed, just send to me, Trevor or Peter.

It's been quiet in the shed lately, just steering heads (don't ask!), forks and wheel attachments for the

Gold Star.

As you can see from the back page, Brian is up and about again, if somewhat battered and stiff. BSA

riders are tough stuff.

All the best for Christmas and come along to the Chrissy lunch with the Nortonians (see Run page).

MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL 2019

Fellow Beezaphiles, it's TIME, as the Goughster decreed! Present 2018 membership finishes December 31. The simplest way to renew your Club membership is:

The website - www.bsansw.org.au. You can download the renewal form and go paper + cheque, or simply do a direct deposit from your bank account to the Club via the details on the renewal site. NO NEED TO REGISTER on the site.

We do like to get a renewal form (one is attached to the October 2018 electronic Banter email sent with this Banter), but if nothing in your details has changed, simply pay by bank deposit and include your name on the transfer, or pop me an email.

BSA Club of NSWBSB 012559Acct 563879231

You can still pay at a Club meeting with cash or cheque. Make sure Vic or I record your donation ☺

Remember, If you are non-financial, any BSA NSW Club-supported insurance is not valid and bikes registered via BSA NSW club Conditional Registration are considered unregistered.

As planned the initial meet was at Crossroads Hotel at 9.00am and after the previous day's rain it was a

relief to find it was a delightful dry bright morning. Doug Mullen lives the closest to the Crossroads and

was the last to arrive having to rescue his Triumph Scrambler from a flat battery but we were all there

by the scheduled time. The rest of the starts were Victor on his venerable Gold Flash, Simon on his B40,

Jim on his Virago, Alan on a BMW 1200 and his brother John and wife Debbie similarly mounted on

another 1200 Beema. A welcome newcomer to our rides was Kumar on a powder blue Harley.

After the usual jaw jaw we set off with Vic in the vanguard and Doug as tailend Charlie to pick up

stragglers. The route was to take us up Bringelly Rd, across the Northern Rd onto Greendale Road to

Wallacia. However we fell at the first fence as the Camden Valley Way, Cowpasture Road, Bringelly

Road junction had been remodelled and Vic lead us down the Camden Valley Way turning instead.

Realising the mistake he stopped us at the first set of traffic lights with a right turn junction. Vic

decided not to wait for the lights to change in our favour and did an illegal U turn on the pedestrian

cross point before the lights. The rest of us were less brave and waited for the lights to change before

we did a slightly less legal U turn around the lights.

After the small detour we were back on Bringelly Road, which is still undergoing major road works to

make it a 2 lanes per side dual carriageway instead of a cart track; presumably to allow for the future

Badgerys Creek Airport Traffic. Crossing the Northern Rd brought us onto Greendale Road which is a

decent twisty motorcycling road even if in the need of some repairs.

Our next stop to pick up other riders was outside Trevor’s home and Trevor on his Firebird and Shane

on his B50 were waiting at the gate. We expected Rob on his Harley to be there too but there was no

sign of him; after a little while it occurred to us that the original second meet discussed was the

Wallacia junction and that Rob may not have realised it changed to Trevor’s later in Thursday’s Club

meeting. Rider’s set of and to find Rob.

While we waited Trevor mentioned there was a speed cop at the top of the hill and sure enough he

came down the hill on the tail of some poor unfortunate and pulled him over. Meanwhile the search

party had to cross the bridge back to the junction with the bridge repair work and traffic delays but

they located Rob and his Harley and came back through the delays again.

With the relief that the traffic cops was busy we set off on Silverdale Road up the hill toward Silverdale.

Trevor made the sensible suggestion that as he knew the planned route he take the lead and that we

institute rolling marshals at the junctions with Doug staying at the back to signal that we were all

together. The system worked well on the ride up to Burragorang.

The route was via Werombi Road but with a bit of additional spontaneous improvisation on Trevor’s

part, we took the spirit of the planned route and took a loop around Rapleys Loop Road back onto

Werombi Road. Back on the planned route we turned onto Bobs Range Road. The whole excursion

provided great bike roads. Bobs Range Road led us to a left turn back onto Silverdale Road which we

followed into the Oaks changing into John Street in the town. At the roundabout we took a right

onto Mary Street which changes into Burragorang Road which took us through Oakdale and onto the

Burragorang Lookout

To Burragorang and Beyond

Sunday 9th September, 2018

We stopped at the point for a rest, leg stretch, photos and to take in the vista which was very clear

with just a trace of Blue Mountain Haze. The bikes attracted a few bystanders and fellow travellers

into conversation.

Trevor said he had been suffering double vision on the way up to Burragorang and thought it was

due to his helmet being too tight a fit; others suggested it might have been his underwear but we will

have to wait for a final diagnosis. In the event He and Shane decided their best course was to head

back by the shortest route and took their leave.

It was now after 11am and we variously needed coffee, breakfast, brunch or lunch so we headed back

to the roundabout at the Oaks, took the right turn onto John St towards Picton and stopped at the

Glen’s Bakery Café. Service was friendly and the food good and Victor regaled us with tales of his

recent adventures in Russia, bribery and arrests seem to have been an almost daily occurrence for him

and his companion. His deviant behaviour included walking on the grass, being where he should not be

and other heinous crimes.

After eating and chatting John and Debbie had to leave as their son was leaving for Japan that

afternoon. The plan for the rest of us was to go into Picton and over the ‘Old Razor Back” into

Camden.

With fewer numbers we did not continue our rolling marshal regime and as Doug was the route's

author he took the lead and we rolled down the Picton Road, (locally Montpellier Drive), onto

Barkers Lodge Road, enjoying the open scenery and the gentle twists and bends, into Picton.

In Picton we turned left onto The Old Hume Highway and after about ten clicks we turned onto the

first part of the Old Razor Road.

This road is un-metalled and makes for an interesting ride. Unfortunately at the first junction Doug’s

Dementia kicked in and we continued onto the northern direction of Mount Hercules Road instead of

turning South and picking up the rest of Old Razorback a little way on. Quickly realising his

mistake he told Vic to go back to the junction. Doug stayed back to ensure everyone turned but

unfortunately Vic misunderstood and took most of the crew back down Mount Hercules Road to

The Old Hume Highway.

Doug and Alan got back to the junction and saw them disappearing into the Sunset. Hoping that they

would realise and return however but after 5 minutes Doug and Alan surmised they were not coming

back so the remaining two set off up the rest of old Razor Back into Camden. The rest of the Old

Razorback is now tarmac, very twisty and a very enjoyable ride.

From Camden these two followed Camden Valley back to our departure points.

A great ride despite a few minor issues, worth repeating next year without the mistakes and

probably worth keeping the rolling marshals going even when we are a smaller group.

The meet was 9.00am at Asquith and the turnout was just Victor on his Yamaha, Jim on the Virago,

Doug riding the Scrambler and the surprise for the day was Greg on 1958ish Harley and Sidecar with

Ian as passenger. This made up for the lack of BSAs on the day as the elegant outfit featured a bullet

shaped sidecar originally from a Police Indian unit.

Greg announced he wasn’t sure that the Harley was up for it as the oil light was on however without to

much coercion from Victor he agreed to ride along and see if it got any worse.

As we roared off from the lights with Doug, on the tail, thought he had been shot at until he realised it

was the Harley’s crisp backfire!

After the sweltering heat of the previous 2 days it was an ideal riding day with the morning temps

around the upper teens.

Up the old Pacific Highway to Calga; the sea air caused a bit of precipitation but fortunately not

enough to offset the drying effect of the speed and the warm morning. We continued onto Peats

Ridge Road to the corrugated café at Peats Ridge for coffee stop.

Greg was by now realising what a work out his arms and shoulders were having heaving the outfit

through the bends even though Ian was doing his best to move his body weight around the chair.

The Harley caused a lot of stares from the sports bike guys passing through our platoon and good

conversations with other riders at the Café. Ian told us that this combo was the one used in the Auntie

Jack TV series featuring Grahame Bond back in the 70’s.

Fortunately the Harley’s oil light went out when it got going, it was just overheating in the

Sydney traffic, so Greg and Ian decided to carry on with us.

Shortly after leaving the Café we took the left turn onto the Wiseman’s Ferry Road up over Mangrove

Mountain and down to Wisemans ferry. We soon cleared to light drizzle that we had encountered and

the increasing temperature was kept at pleasant levels by the altitude. Plenty to see and lots of bends

and bumps to contend with along the way through Lower Mangrove and along the valley to the river

crossing.

Arriving with the ferry just coming in and no queue we were soon across the river and into the park. At

the Café we joined Eric who had arrived on his 1970 Bonnie; one of the very last before they changed

to the Oil in Frame model.

It had taken us longer to get to Wisemans Ferry than anticipated so we opted not to go on to St.

Albans and after the usual intellectual oral intercourse we considered our routes home.

Greg said he was knackered from Harley wrestling and so he and Ian opted for the shortest and

straightest ride home.

Eric suggested that the rest of us follow him along the river to Wilberforce, Eric set a good pace on

the Bonnie through the bendery of River Road down to the Portland crossing as this was his home

turf. Eric departed here for home.

Victor, Jim and Doug carried on down the Hawkesbury on the Sackville Road to the River crossing at

Sackville and on into Wilberforce where we split up to take our own routes back to our various

locations.

A great if longish ride with the delights of the Old Pacific Highway and the scenery of the Hawkesbury

which with the bends to keep the lid on speed was a delight on a not too warm sunny spring day.
