What is FTTH ?

FTTH (Fiber To The Home) is the deployment of triple play services through fiber optic cable from a central office to an individual home

FTTH is the idea of bringing high-speed networking, digital television and telephone service

This is the most reliable next generation triple play network design, with every home needing a separate fiber optic cable to link it with the central office

Page 11: Bsnl s Ftth Plan West d1 07222009

Why FTTH for Telecom Carrier

• Declining revenue from the voice services.

• Increasing revenue from the data services and video services.• Deploying the right and future proof access technology .• The growing popularity of the Internet and success of e-commerce.• Bandwidth needs grow.• Great evolution in subscriber connectivity.• True broadband connectivity capable of supporting HDTV, multiple lines of voice, and Internet access bursting to 10 to 100 Mbps and

beyond.• Fiber networks provide all the advantages desired by a Telecom Carrier

GPON Access Network - Configuration A

The end-to-end interconnection for an IPTV Video Only, No RF Video Overlay Configuration, referred to in this document as Configuration A , access with centralized splitting via a 2:32 splitter.

GPON Access Network –Configuration B

The end-to-end interconnection for a RF Video Overlay Configuration referred to in this document as Configuration B , access with cascaded splitting via a 2:4 ETSI rack mounted splitter installed in an intermediate office. In the CO the AOLT sub rack connects to the Outside/Inside Plant via a FDMS/ODF.

• Use optical patch cords with SC-UPC connectors at both ends to connect the GLCP GPON ports to the FDMS.

• Redundancy is achieved by connecting 2 ports of the same AOLT to Fiber termination box 1 and box 3 and connections are extended to fiber termination box 2 to attach to the two input ports of the 2:32 splitter where path redundancy ends.

• G.657A drop fibers (SOR 4.2) with field crimped SC-APC connector SOR 4.3 (fiber cut to the desired length) will connectthe output of the splitter to the ONT.

• The SWT card shall connect to the Layer 2 aggregation switch via 1x10 GbE or 4x1 GbE interfaces via the FMDS/ODF.

Logical Connections for 6400 Users per MAU

The design is determined by the following assumptions:-

• One 10 GbE ring per RPR switch

• 5 OLT-s per RPR shelf; each OLT serves 320 end users for a total of 6400 users for 20 OLT-s

• Bandwidth per user on the ring: 10,000/6400=1.56 Mbps per user – 500 Mbps per OLT

• Use 2 to 4 aggregated GbE ports per OLT uplink• Use 10 aggregated GbE ports at the T1 switch towards BNG

Splitter losses

The ONT-100 single-family unit (SFU) models operate with a 1490 nm downstream optical signal strength between -8 and -28 dBm. This sensitivity range allows for a fair amount of flexibility.

A standard basic ODN (32-wide splitter with a maximum PON to ONT distance of 20 km) provides adequate signal strength to each ONT of approximately -22 to -23 dBm.

Geographic considerations may not allow for this type of simplicity and therefore require calculations based on your installation needs. The Table will assist the installation team with optical budgeting.
