BSO Recognition Awards 2013
Recognising Staff
On Thursday September 26th BSO held its second annual Recognition Awards event at The MAC in Belfast. Twenty-eight nominations had been received from across the whole organisation and at the event five awards were presented to staff members chosen by a panel made up of Glynis Henry (Chief Executive of NIPEC), Mark Bradley (Director of Corporate Services of NISCC) and Robin McClelland (non-executive Board member). The event began with the Chairman, Mr Coleman, presenting certificates of recognition to staff who had achieved an academic award within 2012/2013. Mr Coleman then invited Glynis Henry to speak who expressed her delight at the standard of application and the enthusiasm of BSO staff. Mr Coleman then went on to announce and present the winners within each category with a trophy and certificate. Finally Mr Coleman presented a token of gratitude to staff who have over forty years continuous service within HSCNI.

The ‘Innovation Award’ was presented to the NI Electronic Care Record Team. This team had been nominated by Karen Bailey for delivering a regional web-based portal system, hosted in BSO Regional Datacentres, which will give HSC professionals a single, secure overview of key clinical information about their patients or clients in order to aid better, faster, safer decision making and improve the quality and efficiency of the services provided throughout the HSC.
The information required by HSC professionals currently resides in many disparate, clinical information systems. The NIECR Project has brought together approximately 71 million pieces of data, including laboratory results, radiology reports, clinical documents, emergency department encounters, drugs and allergies, from over 30 clinical information systems to give the single best view of patient information.

BSO Award for Excellence
The ‘Chairman’s Award for Excellence’ was presented to Emma Smyth. Emma was nominated by Paula Sheils. Emma Smyth is a member of staff within FPS Pharmaceutical Services who was diagnosed with cancer in October 2012. Emma has only been on sick leave for 41 out of 144 working
days.
Indeed, in giving her the brilliant “All-clear”, her consultant suggested that she might soon consider going back to work and was astounded to hear that she had attended work throughout her treatment.
Emma has played a full role in assisting FPS’ delivery of a 30-day payment for pharmacy contractors, and, in meeting the high standard of quality work required to deliver the 30-day payment, has been part of FPS’ achievement of the objective to embed excellence and innovation.

Outstanding Leadership Award
An Additional Award in Recognition of Outstanding Leadership was presented to Paula Sheils as nominated by BSO SMT for her work on the Accelerated Pharmacy Payment Project. 2013 has been a challenging year for BSO and staff have faced many changes. BSO is grateful to all staff for their patience and hard work throughout this time of transition and for continuing to achieve numerous successes during this time. This successful transition would not have been possible without direction and motivation from team leaders therefore it was agreed that as a once off, given the circumstances, an award for Outstanding Leadership should be given. Paula has worked tirelessly with her team to motivate and encourage them and ensure that the Accelerated Pharmacy Payment Project was a success.
