Summary

Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) would like to encourage a young generation of future professional video artists.

We will stage a series of film production workshops. By the end of June 2018, 10 teams of high school students will have produced a 10 – 15 minute film, and submitted the films to the BSoA to be judged by local and international jurors.

The workshops for the high school students and their teachers, delivered by 3 videographers, will encompass the following:Pre-Production - Roles & Duties, Scripts & Breakdowns, Scheduling & Logistics, Budgeting, and Pre-Visualization.Production - Cameras & Lenses, Grip & Lighting, Camera Movement, Set Management & Etiquette, Directing, Sound

Recording and DIT(Onset media management).Post-Production - File Management & Ingest, Editing, Compositing & Video Effects, Colour Correction & Grading,

Post Sound, Finishing, Rendering & Distribution.

The students will work in teams of up to 15 individuals and will produce the films from scripts provided by playwrights from The Bermuda Musical & Dramatic Society, from their “Famous for 15 Minutes” plays. The plays selected for this, our first annual competition, will all have Bermudian content. The films will be judged by local and international jurors and trophies and prizes will be awarded to the teams and the schools. All Bermuda high schools have agreed to participate.

Public Schools: Cedarbridge Academy, The Berkeley InstitutePrivate Schools: Bermuda High School, Bermuda Institute, Mount Saint Agnes Academy, Saltus Grammar School, Somersfield Academy, Warwick Academy

State of Play

Unfortunately, there is no consistent, institutional outlet for kids under 18 in Bermuda to gain the necessary theoretical, technical and hands-on knowledge of moving picture to consider it as a career path.

How It Works:

Step 1High schools assemble teams of 10-15 students, aged 14-18.

Step 2Each team adapts a stage play into a screenplay and produces a 10-15 minute short film.

Step 3Films are scored by a jury. Institutional, team and individual prizes are awarded.

The workshops will cover each category of film production and will be offered throughout the process, evenings during the week and on weekends. All workshops will be taught by Bermudian videographers who will also mentor the teams during the actual film production. We generally expect to have 1 ½ to 2 hr workshops held at the Bermuda College with lectures and practicals.

Lectures will be supported by PowerPoint presentations, while practicals would give participants the opportunity to gain hands-on instruction with processes, equipment, and software. Handouts and resources would be provided to participants digitally using wafer USB cards.

Each team will select a script to adapt from a shortlist of the Bermuda Musical & Dramatic Society's “Famous for 15 Minutes” plays. The plays will be selected based initially on their Bermudian cultural content. The teams will produce their films between the months of February to June 2018. January will be taken up with orientation, and some workshops. A uniform equipment kit will be made available to each team for the production of their respective films. We have budgeted 3-4 weeks of equipment use per team. Each team will be managed by their respective school media teacher and be mentored by workshop instructors.

Benefits

Each year of the competition will involve 100 – 150 high school students.

Provides students exposure to professional grade film making tools and techniques.

Provides students the opportunity to get a taste of the film production industry.

Provides training by industry professionals.

Provides an incentive for schools to improve media education.

Provides a forum for healthy inter-scholastic competition.

Team building, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

Provides an opportunity to showcase Bermudian talent locally and internationally.

Let’s be clear: these are your children, children from your communities. These children are Bermuda’s future. Helping to create this opportunity in turn will plant seeds that will develop future employers, employees and critical thinkers. This can be in print or broadcast media, new media, IT, public relations, advertising, marketing, event management, or corporate communications. It will enhance the artistic output of Bermuda and foment a solid foundation of skilled labour as we continue to encourage tourism and film production on the island.
