SELECT REHABILITION NEWS By Lauren Krisch, Director of Rehab

Joint Replacement Surgery - When joint damage, due to arthritis or an injury, limits your daily activities and causes severe pain, joint replacement surgery may be an option to

Page 5: BST EAST WELLNESS AND LIFE ENRICHMENT EVENTS … · BST EAST WELLNESS AND LIFE ENRICHMENT EVENTS FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH ... designed to help you understand the FITT principle and

LE 5 BSTE Wellness & Life Enrichment March 2018 Edition

consider. Joint replacement surgery consists of removing a damaged joint and putting in a new one. What can you expect after the surgery? The average hospital stay is typically two to three days after surgery, then discharged to either a skilled nursing facility for more intense inpatient care or home. Your rehab therapists can assist you before and after surgery. Before surgery therapists are trained to help you prepare for surgery by strengthening the muscles around the joint to be replaced and maintaining the range of motion in the joint. After joint replacement surgery, you may experience surgical pain which will lessen each day as you continue to move the joint. The rehab team will help you increase range of motion, increase strength and control pain and swelling in the replaced joint. For more information about how the therapy department may improve your health and wellness, contact Lauren Krisch at 568-5171.
