Safety information

General

Only use the power supply includedwith the product. Using anunauthorised power supply willinvalidate your guarantee and maydamage the telephone. Power supplynumber is M-GA35-095130F.

For the handset use only nickel-metalhydride (NiMH) AAA rechargeablebatteries. Never use other batteries orconventional alkaline batteries. Theycould lead to a short circuit or destroythe battery casing. The batteries shouldhave a power rating of at least 700mAh1.2V. Batteries and accessories areavailable from withandwithoutwires.comor call 0870 240 5522.

If the Keyguard is switched on, it isNOT possible to make calls, includingemergency numbers (999/112).

Do not open the base station or handset(other than to change batteries). Thiscould expose you to high voltages orother risks.

Radio signals transmitted between thehandset and base may cause interferenceto hearing aids.

This product should not be used nearemergency/intensive care medicalequipment and should not be used bypeople with pacemakers.

Never dispose of batteries in a fire. There is a serious risk of explosion and/or the release of highly toxic chemicals.

Cleaning

Simply clean the handset and base station with a damp (not wet) cloth, or an anti-static wipe. Never use householdpolish as this will damage the product.Never use a dry cloth as this may cause a static shock.

Environmental

Do not expose to direct sunlight.

The product may heat up when thebatteries are being recharged. This isnormal. However, we recommend thatyou do not place the product on antique/veneered wood to avoid damage.

Do not stand your product on carpets orother surfaces which generate fibres, orplace it in locations preventing the freeflow of air over its surfaces.

Do not submerge any part of your product in water and do not use it indamp or humid conditions, such asbathrooms.

Do not expose your product to fire,explosive or other hazardous conditions.

There is a slight chance that your phonecould be damaged by an electrical storm.We recommend that you unplug thepower and telephone line cord during anelectrical storm.

Plan the location

Situate your product close enough tothe telephone and mains power socketsso that the cables will reach.

Make sure it is at least 1 metre awayfrom other electrical products to avoidinterference.

Do not situate the product in thebathroom or other humid areas.

WARNING

Do not connect the telephone line cordto the phone socket until your handsetis fully charged. This will prevent therisk of the phone being answeredbefore the battery is charged.Answering the phone before the batteryis fully charged may prevent it fromreaching its optimum capacity.

IMPORTANT

Please note that your handset is NOTregistered to the base station. The BTDiverse 5100 handset will be easilyregistered once you complete the steps1 to 3 below.

3 Registering and chargingthe handset

The display is protected by a plasticfilm. You can remove this protectiveplastic film from the display.



Insert the two batteries supplied, asindicated inside the batterycompartment and slide the batterycompartment cover shut.

When the handset is registered thedisplay will show:

If the icons on the display flash continuously...

It means that the handset is notregistered with the base station.

Ensure you have correctly carried outstep 3 on page 10. If the product hasstill not registered, please see“Registering manually” on page 36.

All additional handsets you purchasewill need to be individually registeredwith the base station before they willwork with the BT Diverse 5110.

Leave the handset for approx. 16 hoursin the base station to charge thebatteries, as they are not charged in thefactory. The battery status icon flasheson the handset to indicate that thebatteries are being charged.

The battery cover may be found in thepackaging with the batteries.

To register your handset, place it in thebase station with the display facingupward. After approx. one minute, thehandset's internal number is displayed(e.g. 1). Successful registration issignalled by a confirmation tone.

WARNING

Under no circumstances should non-rechargeable batteries be used.Using incorrect batteries will invalidateyour guarantee and may damage thetelephone.

Battery performance

Batteries and case may become warmduring charging. This is normal.

Under ideal conditions, the handsetbatteries should give about 13 hourstalktime or 170 hours standby time ona single charge. However, new NiMHbatteries do not reach their fullcapacity until they have been innormal use for several days.

The charge capacity of rechargeablebatteries will reduce with time as theywear out, so reducing the talk/standbytime of the handset. Eventually theywill need to be replaced. New batteriesare available fromwww.withandwithoutwires.com or call 0870 240 5522.

If you replace the handset batteries with ones that have been fullycharged, the battery indicator will notshow full until the next charge cyclehas been completed. Charge thehandset until the batteries register fullagain. From then on the display willbe correct.

Out of range?

The range for the BT Diverse 5110is 300 metres outdoors and 50metres indoors.If you go out of range of a base stationfor a long time while your handset isswitched ON, it may take more than20 minutes to ‘find’ the base stationagain when you come back withinrange. However, by simply switchingthe handset OFF for a moment, thenON again, it will find the base stationwithin a few seconds.

Battery level icons

When the batteries are almost flat abeep sounds and the display shows theempty battery icon. You will need torecharge your handset before you canuse it. The various states of charge areshown below:

4 Connect the telephone linecord to the base and pluginto the wall socket

Ensure that each end of the line cord isfitted into the correct socket.

Setting the date and time

Press the MENU optionsbutton.

Press the DOWN button untilthe display shows BASE SET.

Press the OK button. Thedisplay will show DATE/TIME.

Press the OK button.The display will show DATE SET.

Press the OK button.

Use the keypad to enter thedate (DD/MM/YY).


Press the DOWN button untilthe display shows CLOCK SET.


Use the keypad to enter thetime in 12-hour clock format(HH/MM).

After entering the time in the12-hour clock format, pressthe OK button.

Press the DOWN button tochoose AM or PM.


Press the RED PHONE buttonuntil you return to the idlescreen.

Note

If you subscribe to a Caller DisplayService the time and date will be setwith the first incoming call. However,the year setting will have to bechanged manually, see page 13.

To set the time mode(12 or 24-hour clock)

The handset’s default setting is12-hour clock. To change theclock to the 24-hour setting:



Press the DOWN button untilthe display shows DATE/TIME.


Press the DOWN button untilthe display shows CLOCK MODE.


Press the DOWN button toswitch between 24 H and 12 H

settings.

Press the OK button toconfirm the setting you want.

Using the telephone

To switch the handset poweron and off

Press and hold the REDPHONE button to switch thehandset off.

Press and hold the REDPHONE button to switch thehandset on again.

Your BT Diverse 5110 has a menu drivendisplay. The OPTION buttons below thedisplay allow you to select optionswithin each menu and make adjustmentsto their settings. When the phone is inidle mode, press the MENU button toenter the main menu. During a call, ifyou press the MENU button it will openthe menu for that particular situation.

Note

To quit a menu at any time, press theRED PHONE button. This will takeyou back one step. Keep pressing theRED PHONE button to get back to theidle screen.

Making and ending calls

To make an external call

Ensure the handset isswitched ON.

Press the GREEN PHONEbutton. You will hear the dialtone.

Dial the number.

Preparatory dialling

Enter the phone number first.If you make a mistake pressthe DELETE button to removeany incorrect digits.

Press the GREEN PHONEbutton to dial the number.

To end a call

Press the RED PHONE button.

To receive an external call

Press the GREEN PHONEbutton to answer the call.

Or

If the handset is on the base,simply lift it up and speak.You do not need to press theGREEN PHONE button.

This is called auto-talk. Youcan switch autotalk off so youalways have to press theGREEN PHONE button toanswer a call, see page 31.

Call timer

Your handset automatically times theduration of all external calls, showing iton the display during your call and for a few seconds after it is finished.

To store a name and number inthe directory

Press the DIRECTORY button.

Press the MENU options button.

Press the DOWN button untilthe display shows NEW ENTRY.

Press OK to confirm.

Enter the telephone numberyou want to store.


Entering names

Enter the name using theletters on the keypad.(See ‘Character map’ on thefollowing page for how toenter special characters).For example, to enter thename TOM:

Press the 8 button until Tappears on the display.

Press the 6 button until thedisplay shows O.

Then press 6 until the displayshows M.

Press OK to confirm.The display will show SAVEDand TOM.

Name and number directory

You can store up to 20 of your mostfrequently used names (up to 12 letters)and numbers (up to 22 digits long).



To dial a number from thedirectory


If you wish, you can use thekeypad to enter the first letterof the name, for example tofind TOM, press the 8 button.

Press the DOWN button toscroll to the entry you want.

Use the keypad to enter thefirst letter of the name youwish to edit.

Press the EXTRA DIRECTORYbutton.

Press the MENU button.

The structure for this directorymenu is the same as the mainname and number directory.

You can follow the instructionsstarting on page 16 for storing,dialling, editing and deletingnumbers in this directory.

This is an additional directory whereyou are able to store up to 10 namesand numbers.

Redial

Your handset automatically saves thelast five telephone numbers dialled intoa redial list.

To dial a number in the redial list

Press the REDIAL optionsbutton. The last numberdialled will be displayed.

Press the DOWN button toscroll through the redial list.


To copy numbers shown in theredial list to the directory

Press the REDIAL optionsbutton.

Press the DOWN button untilthe number you want isdisplayed.


Press the DOWN button untilthe display shows COPY TO DIR.

Press the OK button.The number is shown on thedisplay.

Press OK to confirm.NAME is displayed.

Secrecy

When on a call you can talk to someonein the same room, without your callerhearing.

To switch secrecy on/off

During a call:Press the INT options button.

The call is put on hold andyour caller will hear music.

To resume the call:Press the MENU optionsbutton. Display shows GOBACK.

Press OK to confirm. You cannow speak to your caller again.

Paging and internal calls

You can alert handset users that theyare wanted, or locate a missing handset.

If you have multiple handsets registeredto the base you can make internal callsbetween handsets.

Press the INT button.

Use the DOWN ARROW onthe options button to find thehandset number you want topage or call.

Press the GREEN PHONEbutton to call the handset.

If you want to page all thehandsets registered to thebase, highlight CALL ALL onthe display and press theGREEN PHONE button.

You can also page all handsetsby pressing the PAGE buttonon the base station

To transfer an external callbetween handsets

You can transfer an external callto another handset registeredto the base.

Press the INT options button.

Enter the number of thehandset to which you wish totransfer the call, or scroll tofind using the UP or DOWNoption buttons. When theother handset answers you cantell them you are transferringthe call and press the REDPHONE button. The call istransferred and the originalhandset shows LINE IN USE onthe display.

To return to an external call if the internal call is nottransferred

To switch 3-way conversationfunction on/off

You can allow your BT Diverse5110 to hold 3-way calls betweenhandsets.


Press the DOWN optionsbutton until the display showsBASE SET.

To hold a 3-way conversation

You can talk to one externalcaller and another internal callerat the same time on your BTDiverse 5110 handset.

While another handset user istalking to an external callerthe display shows LINE IN USE.

Press the GREEN PHONEbutton to join the conversation.Display shows LISTENING IN.

A tone is heard by all threeparties when one party entersor leaves the call.

Press the RED PHONE buttonto end your call.

Caller Display and otherBT Calling Features

IMPORTANT

To use Caller Display and CallWaiting you must first subscribe to theServices from your Network Provider.For more information onBT’s Calling Features call BT freeon 0800 800 150.

Note

Calls that are ‘withheld’, ‘unavailable’or ‘international’ are not stored in theCalls list, as there is no telephonenumber sent via the network.

Note

If you have a new call in your Callslist, the icon will flash.

If you subscribe to a Caller DisplayService you can see who is calling youon your handset display, as well as thedate and time of their call (unless thenumber has been withheld).

If you have stored a name to go withthe number in your handset directory,the name will be displayed instead.

Please ensure that you have stored thefull telephone number, including the areacode, otherwise the name will not matchthe number stored in the directory.

If the caller has withheld their number,the display will show WITHHELD.

If you call from another handset, thedisplay shows the handset number and INT.

Calls list

The Calls list contains the telephonenumbers of your last 10 callers.

Whether you take a call or not, thecaller’s details are stored in the Callslist. You can display, scroll through anddial numbers in the list and copy theminto the directory.

If a call is received when the Calls listis full then the oldest entry will bedeleted automatically.

To view the Calls list

Press the ENVELOPE optionsbutton. A flashing envelopeindicates new calls. New callsare displayed immediately.

If there are no new entries,continue to open the Calls list.

The display will show the typeof calls you have received inyour Calls list, e.g. CALLS02/06 means you havereceived 2 new calls and have6 old calls.

Press the OK button to displaythe most recent number to callyou.

Press the UP and DOWNbuttons to scroll backwards andforwards through the Calls list.

When you have found theentry you want, you have theoptions to:

Call a number from the Calls list:

When the number you wish tocall is displayed, press theGREEN PHONE button.The number will be dialledautomatically.

Display the time of the call:


Press the DOWN button tohighlight TIME.

Press the OK options button.The date and time of the callare displayed.

To return to the beginning of the calls list, press the REDPHONE button repeatedlyuntil it is displayed.

Display the status of the call:


Press the DOWN button tohighlight STATUS.

Call Waiting

If you also subscribe to a Call WaitingService, when you are on a call andanother person tries to call you, thesecond caller’s number will appear onthe handset display and you will hear anintermittent beep through the handset.This is to alert you to the other callerwaiting to speak to you.

To accept a waiting call

During a call when you hearthe Call Waiting beeps:

The number (or name if storedin the directory) of the secondcaller will flash on the display.

Press the MENU optionsbutton. Display shows ACCEPT.

Press the OK options button.Your current call is put on holdand you are connected to thesecond caller.

Press the RECALL button totoggle between callers.

To switch Call Waiting on/off

You can choose whether tohave your Call Waiting serviceswitched on or off dependingon what you are doing i.e. ifyou are using the Internet viayour PC and do not want CallWaiting to interrupt you.

Press the MENU options button,SEL SERVICES is displayed.


Press the DOWN until thedisplay shows CALL WAITING.


Use the UP or DOWN buttonto select whether you want theservice on or off.


You will hear a Networkmessage confirming yourdivert request.

Press the RED PHONE buttonuntil you reach the idle display.

Call Divert requires subscription fromyour Network provider. You may becharged a subscription fee.

Withhold number

Your number appears on the display ofthe person you call if they subscribe toa Caller Display service. You are able towithhold your telephone number fromthe next call you make if you wish.

To withhold your number frombeing sent

Press the MENU optionsbutton, SEL SERVICES isdisplayed.

Press the OK options button,WITHHOLD NO is displayed.

Call Divert

You can divert all incoming calls toanother number where you can bereached.

To divert calls

Press the MENU optionsbutton, SEL SERVICES ishighlighted.


Use the DOWN arrow on theoptions button until CALLDIVERT is highlighted.


You now have a choice ofwhen you want calls to bediverted:

AUTOMATIC – calls are putstraight through to thenumber you have set.

NO ANSWER – calls are divertedif your phone is not answered.

Ring Back

If you want to make a call and thenumber is engaged you can set yourtelephone to ring you back when thecaller has finished their call by pressingthe 5 button. To switch this service offbefore your call is returned i.e. if youhave to go out before your caller hasreturned your call.

Voice Mail

If you have a Voice Mail messageservice ie. Call Minder or MeridianMail on your telephone line you can setthe 1 button to access your messagesdirectly via one button.

To set up quick access to yourVoice Mail service


Press the DOWN optionsbutton. Display shows MAILBOX.

Press OK.Display shows SET KEY 1.


Enter the telephone number of your messaging service. For example, 1571 to access‘BT Answer’ voice mail service.

Press OK.The display shows SAVED.


Enter the telephone numberyou want to call.

Note

If you store your security PIN as partof the quick access number, anyonewith access to the handset will be ableto retrieve your messages.

To retrieve messages fromyour Voice Mail service

Press and hold down the1 button.

When set up as opposite thiswill take you into yourmessage service. If during theset up you entered yoursecurity PIN as well as thetelephone number you will betaken quickly into yourmessages. If the security PINwas not included you will haveto enter this number now.

Press the # button.

You will be taken into yourmessages.

To set up quick access to yourVoice Mail service whenbehind a switchboard eg.Meridian Mail.

Follow the steps on theprevious page, but when youcome to enter the telephonenumber of your messagingservice, you will need to followthe example below:

Enter the access number for your messaging service,e.g. 7000.

Press and hold the RECALLbutton to enter a pause in thedialling sequence, P.

Enter your extension number,followed by a hash, e.g. 1234 #.

Press and hold the RECALLbutton to enter another pausein the dialling sequence, P.

You can choose from 5 levels(1–5), a ‘crescendo’ ring thatincreases in volume, or youcan switch the ringer offaltogether (Off).

To switch autotalk on and off

If autotalk is switched on youdo not need to press theGREEN PHONE button toanswer a call you can simplypick the handset up from thebase station.

If you switch autotalk off youalways have to press theGREEN PHONE button toanswer a call.

The default setting for autotalkis on.


To switch autotalk on:

Press the 9 button.

Keyguard

You can lock the keypad so that it cannotbe used accidentally while carrying itaround.

To switch keyguard on/off

Press and hold the # button toswitch keyguard on. You heara confirmation tone.

The keypad is now locked andyou cannot dial out. You cananswer calls as normal bypressing the GREEN PHONEbutton.

To switch keyguard off, pressand hold the # button again.You hear a confirmation tone and the handset is nowunlocked.

If the keyguard is active, theemergency numbers 999 and 112 canNOT be dialled.

Base station PIN (PersonalIdentification Number)

Your base station PIN has a defaultsetting of 0000 but you may want tochange this to prevent unauthoriseduse of your handset(s).

If you change your PIN keep a recordof the new number by writing it in thespace provided on page 8.

Up to six handsets can be registeredand operated from the BT Diverse 5110base station. This allows you to makean internal call between two handsetswhile a third is making an external call.

Each handset can only be registeredwith one base at a time.

Using additionalhandsets and bases

Registering additionalhandsets

If you purchase new handsets to usewith your current BT Diverse 5110,they will not be pre-registered to a basestation. You will need to do this beforeyou can use them.

To register a new BT Diverse5100 handset to a BT Diverse5110 base station

For this method of registrationyour handset must be a BTDiverse 5100.

Place your handset on the base.

Ensure that the handset isswitched on.

After about 1 minute, thehandset’s internal number willbe displayed, e.g. 2.

The next available internalnumber (2–6) will be auto-matically assigned to the handset.

Note

If all internal numbers have beenassigned then the internal number 6will be re-assigned.

To register BT Diverse 2000/3000/4000 series handsetsand other makes

Providing your handset is GAP(Generic Access Profile)compliant, you can register itto your BT Diverse 5110 base.

Place your handset intoregistration mode according to the instructions in it’s user guide.

When the handset is inregistration mode, you willneed to press the PAGE buttonlocated on the top of your BTDiverse 5110 base station, forapproximately 3 seconds. After a short period of timethe handset will be registered.The BT Diverse 5110 willallocate the next availablehandset number. You will heara confirmation tone.

To manually register a BTDiverse 5100 handset toanother base station

If you want to register yourhandset to another basestation you will need tomanually register it.

On the handset to be registered:


Press the DOWN button untilthe display shows REGISTER HS1.

Press the OK button. Displayshows PIN.

Enter your 4-digit Pin (originalsetting 0000).

Press the OK button. Displayflashes REGISTER HS.

Following the user guide forthe base station you areregistering to place the baseinto registration mode.

Problem

Handset not registering.

You have forgotten your base station PIN number.

No display

When you press a button, nothinghappens.

No radio signal to the base – alldisplays flashing.

Handset in base doesn’t charge.

Handset does not ring.

Your caller cannot hear you.

Caller’s number is not displayed eventhough you have subscribed to CallerDisplay.

The error beep – a descending tone –is played.

Possible cause

The base is not powered.There are no batteries in the handset.

You have changed the PIN.

Handset not switched on.Batteries exhausted.

Keyguard may be switched on.

Handset out of range.Handset not registered.Base not switched on.

Base is not connected to the powersupply.

Ringer is switched off.

The INT button has been,pressed,muting the microphone.

The number has been withheld.

You have pressed the wrong button.

Solution

Make sure that the power supply isplugged in at the base and switchedon. Make sure that the rechargeablebatteries (included) are fitted inthe handset correctly. Switch thehandset off and then back onagain, place the handset on to thebase again and leave for approx. 1minute to try registering again.

If this is not successful they try amanual registration (see page 36).

Try entering the default PIN (0000).If you have changed the PIN andcannot remember the number you willneed to contact the BT Diverse Helplineon 08457 908070.

Hold down the RED PHONE button for1 second.Charge or replace batteries.

Hold down the # button for 1 second.

Move closer to the base.Register the handset (see page 35).Check the base is connected properly(see page 10).

Make sure that the power supply is inat the base and the power source isswitched on. Check that the batteriesare fitted correctly.

Switch ringer back on, see page 30.

Select GO BACK option via theMENU button to switch themicrophone back on.

Callers can stop their number beingsent over the network.

Retry. If necessary, check theinstructions.

How many telephones can you have?

All items of telephone equipment have a Ringer Equivalence Number (REN),which is used to calculate the numberof items that may be connected to anyone telephone line. The BT Diverse5110 has a REN of 1. Any otherinstrument provided by BT may beassumed to have a REN of 1 unlessstated otherwise. A total REN of 4 isallowed. (For example: if a BT Diverse5110 is used in conjunction with threeextension telephones, each with a RENof 1, the total REN is 4.)

This product is intended for use withinthe UK for connection to the publictelephone network and compatibleswitchboards.

You need only adjust thissetting if your switchboardrequires a different recall timeto the pre-set recall time of 100 MS.

You can set the length of apause that is inserted afterpressing the RECALL button.
