Sports Leaders and Coaches have a number of roles and responsibilities.
To help them fulfil these roles and responsibilities they must demonstrate a number of skills.

Describing an Effective Sports Leader
There are a number of roles associated with sport leadership that you may have come up with.

The Role of Manager
ManagerA sports Leader is in charge of managing the entire sport activity environment.
They are in charge of team selection, administration, managing other staff, and dealing with issues within the team.
To do this effectively the Sports Leader must show good leadership skills.
They must also have the ability to direct others effectively .

The Role of Educator
Can you think of the last skill you learnt in your sport? How did the sport leader help you learn this skill?
EducatorA major part of sport leadership involves teaching people new skills, techniques and strategies.
A good Sports Leader will use a variety of different teaching methods and styles specific to each participant.
To be effective in this the Sports Leader should have excellent knowledge and experience in the sport.

TrainerSport Leaders will need to develop the correct components of physical fitness required to meet the demands of the specific sportThe components of fitness are:

The Role of Role Model
Role ModelA sports leader is a very influential individual.
It is important that they keep an eye on their own behaviours and that they are setting a good example to their participants.
This is really important with young performers as they are impressionable and may pick up bad behaviours from the sports leader.

InnovatorAn innovator is someone who comes up with new and original ideas.
Sports Leaders can help improve the performance of their participants by using new and creative training techniques.
Think about this... If there was one perfect
way to train, then everyone would do it any everyone would perform the same!
The Role of Friend
Friend
Sport Leaders hare a lot of time with their participants.
They each share a common interest in sport and will both invest a lot of time and effort into it.
Participating in sport can lead to many positive and negative experiences. For example achieving a Personal Best or losing in a cup final.
Sports leaders will act as a friend to their participants during these times.
Evaluation
• Being an effective sports leader involves fulfilling a number of different roles and responsibilities.
• Roles include manager, educator, trainer, innovator, friend, and role model.
• Good sports leaders will have a good understanding of their roles and will fulfil them effectively each time they lead a sport activity session.
