Interactive
Instructions
Click on the arrows to move from page to page
Open the word document, Energy and Power
When you see the word icon go to the document and type in your answers to the questions it asks.
Every time you turn on an electrical device it uses energy.
Using electrical energy
The electricity meter measures how much energy you have used at home.
Your bill, of course, depends on• what you switch on; • how long its on for.
2000W300W
1500W1W
Which device uses the most energy in one second?
least most
click to check your answer.
What does 300W mean?
You see labels like this on electrical devices at home.
The power tells you how much energy the device uses in one second.
W stands for watts. The number is the power of the device.
1 Watt = 1 Joule of energy per secondSo a 9W light bulb has a power of 9W.
It uses 9 Joules of energy each second when it is switched on.
Energy = Power x time
Calculating energy used.
We can use a formula to see how to work out how much energy is used.

How much energy does a 9W light bulb use when it is on for 30 seconds?
Energy = Power x Time
Energy = 9 x 30
Energy = 270 J
Always write down the formula
Then put the numbers instead of the words
Now calculate the answer
Click on each box to reveal the answer
