BATAVIA — Traverse the down-town sector of Batavia, and there area lot of things you will find. Restau-rants, dance studios, shops. But whatyou’ll find more of than anything elseis coffee.

Downtown Batavia is home to awidening array of choices for a goodcup of joe, from casual bakery-likestops that boast no-frills service andglazed sweet rolls, to eclectic localesoffering high-end coffee in a burgeon-ing arts community.

The rundown, from east end towest, includes such stops as DimplesDonuts, 328 E. Wilson St.; The RhinoRoom; the newly opened O’ Sole Mioat 27 N. River St.; Limestone Coffee,which just reopened at 8 Wilson St.;Panera Bread at 154 W. Wilson St.;McDonald’s at 125 W. Wilson St.; and10 S. Coffee in the Batavia Public Li-brary. Add in the choices of city break-fast favorites like Daddio’s Diner at134 W. Wilson St., and there’s enoughjava to satisfy any coffee lover’s pal-ate. There’s even a coffee manufactur-er, PapaNicholas Coffee, on RaddantRoad.

So what makes Batavia a greatplace to sip a cup?

Rhino Room owner Tina Miles saysit’s all about location.

“Batavia has always been a walk-able city, and it’s going to be again,”she said. Her location sits at the cor-ner of Wilson and River streets, where

a long and expensive road redevelop-ment project has been taking place,designed to convert South River intoa destination for restaurants, farmersmarkets and other city events. Milessaid the project has spurred creativityamong the existing businesses, for out-door tables and events during warmweather months.

Miles said her artfully decoratedspace pulls in business profession-als as well as shoppers, and in warmweather, cyclists from the bike pathare known to stop in as well

“The greatest thing about this placeis the customers, really,” she said.“People like to stop and enjoy theircoffee, or they see someone throughthe window who they know, and theyend up coming in for a cup and to visit.It happens quite a lot.”

The spot was the former home toLimestone Coffee and Tea, which re-cently reopened in a new location at8 W. Wilson St. in downtown Bataviain the former home of Lane Allen Ar-chitects.

The cafe has been doing brisk busi-ness since reopening, said MaureenMares, who runs Limestone Coffeewith her daughter, Kendall Ertz.

“It’s been real nice,” Mares said.The space is 525 square feet larger

than Limestone’s old space, Ertz said.

She said the cafe has been seeing “a lotof old customers and a handful of newcustomers.”

Limestone has expanded its break-fast and lunch menu, including health-ier options, such as a homemade vege-tarian soup and a chicken salad wrap.

“Our chicken salad wrap is a verypopular sandwich,” Ertz said.

Kari Kraus, co-founder of WaterStreet Studios in Batavia, was a reg-ular customer at Limestone’s formerlocation, and was making herself athome in the new location.

“It still has the Limestone vibe ithad in the old space,” Kraus said. “Ev-ery time you come here, you run intosomeone you know. It has a nice home-town vibe.”

Expansion like that is key to thesuccess of so many coffee locations.Dimples Donuts has opened a secondshop in Naperville. Ole Sole Mio com-plements its brew with gelato. WhileLimestone offers lunch, Rhino Roomoffers evenings of music, tapas andwine during the spring and summermonths. Miles said she’s readyinga staff to begin the tapas nights thisyear.

“I can’t wait for the weather towarm, and to get some tables outside,”Miles said.

Anyone wearing a new pair of bifocal or mul-

tifocal (progressive) glasses can expect to see

the world in a better light. However, that does not

necessarily mean that vision improved by new

lenses does not require a period of adjustment.

Much in the same way that poor vision can lead

older individuals, in particular, to be more prone

to falling, wearing new glasses also increases the

risk of falls during the first few months of wear.

Multifocal lenses especially may be problematic

because they can impair depth perception and pe-

ripheral vision. During their period of adjustment

to bifocal and multifocal glasses, seniors may

want to switch to single-lens distance glasses

for outdoor activities. All lenses take some get-

ting used to. P.S. Bifocal and multifocal glasses

require particular adjustment when it comes to

descending stairs and escalators.

BATAVIA — Fashion runsin Mary Marconi-Popiel’s fam-ily, so it’s not surprising thatshe now owns the dress andevening wear shop Special Oc-casions on the Avenue.

What is surprising, at leastto Marconi-Popiel, is that shelanded in Batavia, in the samelocation where her father’sbusiness once stood at 2 N.Batavia Ave. The HighlandPark native said 20 years ago,she never would have imag-ined running a shop so closeto home, because she alwaysenvisioned herself being in abig city like New York.

Four years later, in Bat-avia, she said she wouldn’thave it any other way.

“It comes full circle,” shesaid. “This is where I was al-ways meant to be.”

Marconi-Popiel’s father,

Joe Marconi, was in women’sclothing sales, and her auntwas a couture fashion buyer.Her stepmother owns a sistershop around the corner fromSpecial Occasions on the Av-enue, called All Occasions Ac-cessories.

Marconi-Popiel has been infashion since she graduatedfrom college. She started outas a buyer at the now-closedJoseph Spiess Company,which originated in Elgin.Later, she worked as a buy-er and general manager for asurf shop.

Her experience also in-cludes running a store for97.9 The Loop radio stationout of Chicago. She also wasstore manager for Express onMichigan Avenue in Chicago,as well as the Express store atWater Tower Place in Chica-go.

derson building, which sheremembers visiting often as achild with her father, who alsoonce owned another historicbuilding at 10 E. Wilson St. inBatavia.

“My dad was a huge believ-er in Batavia,” she said.

Now that spring is settlingin, prom season has kickedoff at Special Occasions. Mar-coni-Popiel said high schoolstudents begin looking fortheir prom dresses as earlyas January. She said for her,prom and homecoming sea-sons are the same as the hol-iday season for other retailstores.

“Suddenly this week, ev-eryone is looking for mer-maid-[style] dresses,” she said.

Marconi-Popiel said a lot ofstudents will come in with aspecific dress or style in mind,but may walk out of the storewith a different dress. There’sno single style or color that

tends to be the most popularduring any given season, shesaid, which is why she tries tocarry a wide variety.

She said to maintain thatvariety, she often buys onlyone dress out of a collection tocarry in-store. She added thatshe can get other sizes if shedoesn’t have the right one.

Her staff of six, along withan intern from a local highschool, strive to make custom-ers feel as comfortable as pos-sible, being careful not to rushanyone through, she said. Spe-cial Occasions hosts a “Rockand Shop,” where a DJ playsmusic while people shop, anda makeup artist comes in pe-riodically to assist girls inchoosing their makeup colorsbased on the dress they chose.

“Girls should come herebecause of the way we treatthem,” she said. “I think theyshould shop here because it’sa fun experience.”

Bradley to berecognized April 17at breakfast

BATAVIA — Eight-year-oldBradley Anderson said he wasn’tscared when he jumped into a neigh-bor’s swimming pool in July to savea 2-year-old girl who didn’t have alife jacket on.

“I saw that she needed a lot ofhelp,” Bradley said. “I wasn’t afraidat all.”

Bradley dove into 4 feet of waterto rescue the girl. For his efforts, hewill be recognized April 17 at theAmerican Red Cross of Greater Chi-cago’s 2013 Heroes Breakfast at TheFairmont Chicago. Rob Johnsonand Kate Sullivan of CBS 2 Newswill serve as the emcees.

Bradley was one of 173 peoplenominated for a Red Cross Heroaward. Although he was not a final-ist, he will be honored at the break-fast. Batavia Fire Chief Randy De-icke nominated him.

“He did a nice thing,” Deickesaid. “I just thought he deserved anomination.”

Bradley, a second-grader at Wil-liamsburg Elementary School in

Geneva, was 7 years old when theincident happened. State Rep. KayHatcher, R-Yorkville, expressed herappreciation for his actions.

“Congratulations on your quickthinking,” Hatcher said in a hand-written note to Bradley. “You’re myhero.”

For his efforts, Bradley was hon-ored at a Batavia City Council meet-ing in August and presented with aproclamation. Batavia firefightersalso gave Bradley a ride on a firetruck and made lunch for him.

Bradley’s mother, Heather An-derson, said she is proud of herson’s efforts.

“He is an amazing kid,” she said.“He’s just got a heart of gold.”

BATAVIA — AldermenApril 1 voted to make the city’seconomic development posi-tion a full-time post.

“I’m encouraged to see whatthis person can do,” 7th WardAlderman Dawn Tenuta said.

Meredith Hannah had beenthe city’s economic develop-ment analyst since July 2008,but Hannah left the part-timepost in February.

Assistant City Administra-tor Jason Bajor said makingthe position full time wouldhelp the city.

“The primary focus of

the position would revolvearound business retentionand expansion, as well as mar-keting and attraction,” Bajorsaid in a memo to aldermen.

The position would pay be-tween $55,000 to $77,000 a year.He said staff had conducted areview of comparable positionswithin the employment market.

“Estimating a starting sal-ary at the midpoint [$65,000]and with additional benefits,the total cost for the position isprojected to be about $94,000,”Bajor said.

Hannah earned about$36,000 a year in the part-timerole. Staff has budgeted 25 per-cent of the cost of the position

to be supported by the down-town’s tax increment financingdistricts.

“Given the considerableeconomic development effortsfocused within the downtownarea, it is a conservative esti-mate that 25 percent of this po-sition’s time will be focused ondowntown activities,” Bajor said.

BATAVIA — The Bata-via City Council has hireda firm to help the city withthe possible sale of excesselectricity.

Batavia aldermen onMonday voted 12-2 to ap-prove a contract not to ex-ceed $50,000 with Morrilland Associates, which willhelp the city with legisla-tive matters related to thesale. Voting “no” were 2ndWard Alderman Victor Di-etz and 6th Ward Alderman

Lisa Clark.The city has looked at

selling off some of its powerbecause it doesn’t need asmuch as expected becauseof the economic slowdown.In 2007, the Northern Il-linois Municipal PowerAgency, of which Batavia isa member, agreed to a long-term power contract to pur-chase electricity from thePrairie State Energy Cam-pus in downstate Illinois.

Other members includeGeneva and Rochelle. LastOctober, NIMPA facilitat-ed the proposed sale of up

to 50 megawatts of powerallocated to Batavia underits current agreement withPrairie State.

The proposed sale wasterminated in January af-ter there was little interestfrom potential buyers. Aspart of its agreement withthe city, Morrill and Asso-ciates plans to encouragethe passage and enactmentof legislation that wouldeither allow Batavia, as ahome-rule community, tosell a portion of the power itreceives from Prairie Stateat the retail level to consum-

ers outside of its municipalborders, or allow NIMPA tosell the electric power it re-

ceives from Prairie State at

the retail level.

ST. CHARLES — At House of Tokyo inSt. Charles, it’s all about location.

Whether hand-picking a meal at thefloating sushi river, pounding “sakebombs” atop the bar or watching a tep-pan chef cook right before their eyes, cus-tomers are drawn back to the restaurantagain and again — as evidenced by wallsfilled with Polaroid photos of loyal cus-tomers celebrating birthdays, anniversa-ries and other special occasions.

Amanda Bassett, manager and headwaitress at House of Tokyo, said some ofthe customers who were pictured as chil-dren now pay visits as adults.

“With the regulars, we’re really goodat knowing what they want,” she said.“They don’t even have to ask, and [thechef] is already making it.”

House of Tokyo, unique to St. Charles,has been located at 2762 E. Main St. for 12years. Bassett said menu favorites varydepending on where customers choose tosit.

At the sushi bar area, customers cansit in front of a moving river of water withboats that slowly float past each seat atthe bar. If something looks good, custom-ers can just grab one of the small, coveredplates of sushi as it sails on by. Anyoneunfamiliar with sushi can reference thepicture menus scattered along the bar.

For customers with a big appetite,House of Tokyo offers an all-you-can-eatsushi buffet special, which means un-limited sushi for $23.95. The special runsfrom Sunday through Thursday for thosewho dine after 4 p.m.

Everything is made fresh each morn-ing, Bassett said. Among the most popu-lar sushi selections include the regularor deep-fried California roll, which con-tains crab and avocado; the tiger roll,which contains cream cheese, shrimptempura and avocado; and the red dragonroll, which contains eel, tuna and a spicysauce.

Popular selections of nigiri sushi, orraw fish that sits on top of rice rather thanbeing rolled up, include the spicy crab andspicy shrimp, Bassett said.

On the other side of the restaurant,parties of up to 11 people can watch as achef makes their food at a hibachi grill

built right into each table.Bassett said her favorite meal from the

hibachi grill is the filet mignon servedwith the restaurant’s homemade teriya-ki sauce. Another favorite is the Tokyoshrimp, a dish where the shrimp comecoated in a butter garlic sauce.

And what of the aforementioned “sakebombs?” Consumed by balancing a shot ofsake liquor over a glass of Japanese beerusing chop sticks, customers enthusiasti-cally pound the table until the sake fallsinto the glass, turning a simple beverageinto a celebratory experience.

Bassett said the restaurant attracts alot of couples celebrating anniversaries,as well as families celebrating birthdays.She said the food, combined with excellentservice, keeps customers coming back.

And if a customer can’t find the rightdish, Bassett said the chef can usuallywhip up some made-to-order sushi.

“If we have the ingredients, we willmake it,” she said.

The Batavia baseball teamturned in a performanceMonday that was nearly ascrisp as the weather.

W i t h t h e t h e r m o m e -ter hovering just below 40degrees and a gusty west-erly wind blowing out toright field making it feelabout 10 degrees colder, theBulldogs dispatched Glen-bard North, 3-0, in less thantwo hours.

Luke Horton and EmilioTenuta combined to pitch athree-hit shutout as Bataviaimproved to 5-0.

Horton (2-0) went the firstthree innings, allowing just

one hit. He walked one andstruck out four.

Tenuta gave up only a pair

of singles over the final four

innings. He walked one and

struck out three.

“It’s our senior pitching

again,” Batavia coach Matt

Holm said. “Luke came out,

he was on a pitch count, went

three innings, kept them

scoreless. And then Emilio

won’t start until Monday, so

we thought we’d let him go in

relief and get his innings in.

… I think our starting pitch-

ing has given up one run in

five games.”

While he was on the mound,

Tenuta appeared to haveno trouble dealing with theweather conditions, but after

the game he said the cold didmake his job more difficult.

“I’m not the biggest fan ofit,” he said. “I mean, my armgets cold, my hands get cold,and you can’t get the greatestgrip on the ball.”

Hitting in cold weatherisn’t much fun, either, butBatavia did accumulate 10hits. About the only down-side on the day for the Bull-dogs was the 12 men they leftstranded on the basepaths.

“The bats were hot today,but we left too many peopleon base again,” Holm said.“We’ve got to find a way toget the timely hitting asmuch as we’re hitting theball. We’ve had double-digithits in the last three games.”

Batavia employed the hit-and-run effectively to scorethe first run of the game inthe second inning. RobbieBowman led off the framewith a sharp single to leftand moved to second on asacrifice bunt by Dean Si-moncelli. An infield singleby Andrew Seigler put run-ners on the corners with oneout. Holm put the hit-and-run on with Colby Green atthe plate, allowing Bowmanto score and Seigler to reachsecond safely on a grounderto short.

Green picked up anotherRBI in the fourth, lining asingle over the second base-man’s head after Siegler haddoubled to deep left-center.

The Bulldogs used thesqueeze play to score an in-surance run in the fifth. Mi-cah Coffey doubled with oneout, advanced to third on Aar-on Hurd’s single, and scoredon a bunt by Bowman thathe wound up beating out fora hit.

Martial arts blend life skills with cool tricksSHERRI DAUSKURDAS

A decade ago, Ke Roth waslike any suburban Mom, tak-ing her son off to taekwondoclasses. But when she tired ofwaiting on the sidelines witha book in hand, and joined herteenage son on the floor, herlife took a dramatic turn.

Now, she’s a black belt, amartial arts instructor and op-erator at Initial TKD MartialArts, 1305 S. River St. in Bat-avia.

“We focus on children be-tween the ages of 3 and 14, butwe have several parents whoparticipate as well,” Roth said.“We have a program that isdesigned specifically for 3-7year olds, which is focusedon the development of the bigmuscles groups, eye-hand co-

ordination, balance and basic

socialization skills. It’s not

martial arts per se, but uses

martial arts skills and games

to help teach these fundamen-

tals to students who are going

into their first school settings.

Initial TKD offers a 6-10 year-

old class for those students who

have a little more physical and

social development, and does

teach martial arts.

“Because we are dealing

with younger students, it’s low

key, friendly, and again, orient-

ed toward having fun and play-

ing games rather than hard-core martial arts - but it alsostresses the basics of respect,honor, integrity and honesty,as well as helping childrenwith getting more physical ac-tivity in their lives.”

In older age groups,it’smore competitive

“Again, we work on theblack belt attributes of appro-priate social behavior (honor,integrity, loyalty, self-control,respect, perseverance) but wealso work on some of the oth-er skills they will need in lifesuch as setting goals.”

For many parents, its thepsychological aspect of mar-tial arts that offers the mostbenefit, building confidence,instilling discipline, and learn-ing control.

“Many parents enroll theirchildren in martial arts be-cause they are concerned withbullying issues, though thepeople who could really bene-

fit from studying martial artsare the bullies — they need tolearn how to be confident inthemselves, not through harm-ing those around them,” Roth

said, “while others think that

martial arts can help their

children with poor grades and

poor attitudes. And it can —

the discipline you learn can be

applied to everything, as can

the confidence you gain.

“Other people enroll their

children because they see it on

TV and in the movies, and it

looks cool to be able to throw

the high kicks and strong

blocks — and it is.” But Roth,

contends, it’s really much

more.“We teach the integrity —

and along the way, you learn tobreak boards,” Roth said. “Weteach honor, and while we’redoing that, you learn reverseside kicks. We teach respect,and while on that journey,you get to learn punches andblocks.”

Roth added that she doesn’tconsider martial arts a sport.

“It’s a physical activity, yes,and we do having some sport-like activities — but unlikeother sports, there is nothingthat prevents everyone fromwinning,” she said. “You canachieve whatever you decideyou want to achieve; in martialarts, the only one standing inyour way of getting what youwant is you. Every student whois willing to do the work can bea black belt.”

At World Martial Arts Acad-emy USA in Geneva, the lasteight months have been a grow-ing experience. With a curricu-lum based in Shotokan karate,the academy opened in August2012 at 316 Anderson Blvd., inGeneva.

Shotokan Karate is a Japa-nese martial art that involvesstriking with the hands andfeet, said chief instructor andgrandmaster Ramon Ribay,

a 10th degree blackbelt withmore than 50 years of experi-ence.

Programs are offered for allage groups — a Lil’ Warriors

program for 4-7 year olds, a

youth program for 8-13 year

olds, and an adult program

for ages 14 and up. All groups

are taught age appropriate

martial arts skills.

“For Lil’ Warriors, we

emphasize listening skills,

balance, and coordination,”

he said. “For youth, we em-

phasize self-discipline and

respect as we work on the

3 K’s of karate — Kihon,

the basics; Kata, or forms;

and Kumite, which is spar-

ring.” Finally with teens

and adults, the training is

more rigorous, with an em-

phasis on correct execution

of technique and as well as

proper application, he added.

“At about one year into our

program, we begin introduc-

ing students to Filipino mar-

tial arts, known for weaponryand hand-to-hand combat,” hesaid. “After two years into ourprogram, we introduced thetechniques of Aikido, a Japa-nese martial art that focuses onblending and redirecting the

force of your opponent, usingthrows and joint locks.”

Ribay said most peoplecome for martial arts train-ing in order to learn how todefend themselves and to de-velop self-discipline.

“A martial artist is seen assomeone who is a highly dis-ciplined individual, skilledin physically defending himor herself,” he said. “Parentsalso correctly cite the devel-opment of self-confidence asa reason for enrolling theirchildren.

But Ribay attests martialarts training directly or indi-rectly addresses many of theissues facing people today in-cluding: obesity, low level of ac-tivity/fitness, low self-esteem,lack of self-discipline or focus,poor attitude and behavior.

“Martial arts is not aboutlearning how to beat up peo-ple. It’s about self-improve-ment and becoming the bestindividual you can be,” hesaid. “After all is said anddone, martial arts trainingis fun.”
