Your financial generosity and attendance at our games goes a long way to delivering a true Division I experience for our student-athletes.

When I had the privilege to be named your Athletic Director last May, I truly believed this was a special time to be part of Charleston Southern University. Nearly a year later, that belief has been reinforced through so many of the relationships I’ve developed with our administration, coaches, student-athletes, alumni and supporters. We work together every day to build on our tradition and create a first-class athletic program that competes for Big South Conference championships and glorifies Christ in the process. As members of the Buc Club, you are an essential part of making that goal a reality.

Your financial generosity and attendance at our games goes a long way to delivering a true Division I experience for our student-athletes. They are, after all, at the heart of what we do. We take seriously our mission to develop them athletically, academically, spiritually and socially during their time on campus. And, with your continued backing, we feel confident in our ability to accomplish exactly that while winning games and, ultimately, the Sasser Cup.

CSU has come a long way in its brief history, and we can’t wait to see what the future has in store. A vibrant athletic program can and will be a driving force in elevating our university’s vision to integrate faith in learning, leading and serving. We have faith the best is yet to come, and we’re blessed to have you on board.

God bless and go Bucs!Jeff BarberAthletic Director

Brooks Moore was a student at Baptist College at Charleston before the school had a campus to call home. He is the longest-tenured member of the Buc Club and has served as its president, vice president and treasurer. He’s a fixture, and a vocal one, at CSU games across multiple sports. To call Moore (BCC Class of 1969) a proud CSU alum and supporter is an understatement.

“I love this university,” said Moore, who played golf at BCC and graduated with a degree in marketing before embarking on a 47-year career in public education. “This school is a big part of my life. I have a lot of pride in this place; I love what it stands for; I love the kids that go here and I love the coaches. It’s an exciting time for CSU, and I’m happy to be a part of it.”

Moore, who attended high school in Florence, S.C., arrived in the fall of 1965. The school was beginning its first full academic year and utilizing North Charleston’s First Baptist Church for classes and downtown Charleston’s St. John Hotel (now The Mills House) for boarding. A $500 golf scholarship led Moore to Charleston, and he is ever-grateful for it.

“I met a lot of great people, got a great education and you were a part of something and saw it grow,” Moore reflected. “How many people get to be in the founding class of a college? And now I look at the university, the quality of students we have, the graduate

programs, the quality of graduates we put out into the community, and it makes me very proud.”

Moore saw that firsthand as a teacher, vice principal and principal in schools throughout the Tri-County area. His belief in the all-encompassing experience CSU provides has influenced him to remain an active member of the Buc Club.

“I sent a lot of kids through this school as a principal and teacher; I’ve mentored several kids who’ve gone through here. I give to the scholarship program and it’s been so rewarding,” Moore said. “It’s an opportunity to give back and that’s what I love about the Buc Club.”

“The Buc Club gives you an opportunity to give something back – to continue the tradition of excellence and of giving these young people a chance to represent our athletic program in a real positive manner,” Moore continued. “They appreciate being here and to watch these kids grow is outstanding.”

Athletic Director Jeff Barber knows alumni like Moore are valuable as CSU continues to grow and evolve in the years ahead.

“I would like to personally thank Brooks Moore for his long-term commitment to Charleston Southern Athletics,” Barber said. “Like many of our donors, Brooks embodies the Buccaneer spirit. Together, we can meet our goal to continue building championship-level programs on and off the field.”

CJ Hirschmann Former football player; Buc Club Member

Q: WHAT DOES CSU MEAN TO YOU?A: CSU gave me a great opportunity to play college football and that really changed my life. I’m forever grateful for that and I love to see the way the program’s elevated since then. It’s an opportunity for me to say thank you to them and just encourage others to do the same.

Q: WHY DO YOU GIVE?A: I’m encouraged to contribute because the guys before us laid a foundation and we built upon that foundation and brought the program to heights it hadn’t seen before. And then from there on out, it’s just gone up more. To be able to be a part of that basically on the ground floor level and to give back, it’s just very rewarding. The more success, the more buildings that pop up, the more weight rooms, things like that, it’s just more encouraging to give back because you can see your money being used to elevate the program.

Jerry Tekac Father of former football player; active Buc Club member

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT CSU?A: My favorite part is the fact that I have been able to make friends with parents, coaches and the administration that I think you don’t get at the larger schools. It’s not like I’m just a guy with a number. I knew about Charleston Southern before Tyler came here, but once you get involved, it’s so much more than anybody ever thinks about.

Q: WHAT DOES CSU MEAN TO YOUR SON?A: Charleston Southern provided Tyler an opportunity to compete at the Division I level, and you can never replace that. I mean, when he talks to his kids and his grandkids, he can say I played at a Division I school; I played at Alabama, I played at Florida, Florida State, Mississippi State, Indiana. That’s impressive.

Q: IN YOUR ROLE AS A TOWN COUNCILMAN, YOU GET TO INTERACT WITH LOTS OF PEOPLE FROM THE CHARLESTON COMMUNITY. WHAT DO YOU TELL THEM ABOUT CSU?A: I tell ‘em all the time it’s a family environment. It’s a place where you can send your child, your son or your daughter, and you feel pretty good that not only they’re going to get a good education but also they’re going to be treated fairly in a Christian environment. It’s the best of both worlds. The best part about it is you’re not a number at Charleston Southern. In Tyler’s case, he was Tyler Tekac. Whether you play football, whether you’re in the marching band, you run track, any of those things, they know you by name and they invest in you.

Q: WHY DO YOU FEEL ATHLETICS CAN HAVE SUCH AN IMPACT ON A UNIVERSITY?

A: I feel like sports is the glue that holds

a student body together. That’s where they all come together and they pull for one goal. It doesn’t matter how diverse they are, culturally or financially or anything else, sitting in those stands you’ve got one goal and that’s to win.

I see the value of recruiting because people want to be involved in an exciting campus life. Sports is the easiest thing to bring that excitement and we saw it happen the years we went to the NIT in basketball when Saah (Nimley) and Arlon (Harper) were there; we saw it when football was competing on a national level. We saw the excitement. People want to be part of a winning program, and to be able to do that at a Christian university makes it even more special.

Q: WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED WITH THE BUC CLUB?

A: I think with Jeff Barber, he’s got the

skills to take us where we need to go. I’m just so excited about the future. CSU is a wonderful place, with so many great coaches and kids. It’s exciting to think about the possibilities for growth in the years ahead.

Q: WHAT KIND OF AN IMPACT DO YOU ULTIMATELY HOPE TO HAVE ON THE BASKETBALL PROGRAM?

A: We look at it as everything is for the kingdom. We don’t look at it as ‘for now.’ The only thing that we’re going to have left to take into the kingdom are the people whose lives we influenced and we led to Christ, or provided the opportunity for them to hear from Christ. That’s what we choose to do and that’s what CSU does. That’s the real treasures and that’s other people’s lives. When we invest into somebody’s life and love them, that love will last until they die. It never dies. That’s an eternal thing. That’s why we want to be involved and it’s exciting. Every year we get a new crew to work with and to love and to get to know. It’s just a real opportunity to maximize our effectiveness, particularly when you’re at an older age.

Bob and Judy Hetz first met CSU head coach Barclay Radebaugh and his wife, Hope, at Riverbluff Church in North Charleston. The couples hit it off, and the Hetzes have been ardent Buccaneer Basketball supporters ever since.

Beyond attending games and donating to the Buc Club, the Columbia natives consistently welcome CSU players into their home for meals and holiday parties. Mrs. Hetz, a member of CSU’s Board of Trustees, sees the influence athletes have on campus and in the community. By building personal relationships, the Hetzes hope to influence CSU’s student-athletes to be Christ-like influences.

“I know that if I can get these athletes to stand up for Christ, then a lot of people are gonna be influenced in their decision because they just really look up to these guys,” said Mrs. Hetz. “I know that they have a high degree of influence, so if I want to maximize what I give, I want to go to the potential that can reap results in the future of the kingdom.

“I’ve always felt like the best witness for Christ is a personal relationship that people see in you something that they don’t see in a normal person,” Mrs. Hetz continued. “We feel like if we can start that relationship with those kids and they can see in us that unconditional love and support, that’s so valuable. We love ‘em just as much when they lose as we do when they’re winning. When you develop those relationships, they trust you. When you get into their hearts and they know that you love them and care for them, then you can speak into their lives.”

Javis Howard is just one CSU player who considers himself better for getting to know the Hesses. Howard, an Irmo native

who lost both his parents as a child, has remained close with the couple through an eventful rookie professional season that has taken him from England to Lithuania to Albania.

“The biggest thing was they filled a void,” said Howard, who became the first person in his family to earn a college degree. “Obviously in my situation, it’s really tough going through college without parents. They were just always there for me to talk to, and that really meant a lot. Mostly for nonbasketball stuff, just things that every kid going to college goes through - I knew I always had someone to talk to. They’re great role models, and we’ve stayed close. We email back and forth. They love me and they’re invested in my success, from freshman year to now.”

The relationships are hardly a one-way street. The Hetzes thoroughly enjoy the game of basketball and even more so, learning the stories of so many student-athletes that pass through CSU.

“Barclay asked Bob recently, he said ‘when you look back over the last year, what was the most exciting thing that happened to you?’ He thought a minute and he said ‘the times we hosted the basketball team.’ He loves it because he loves getting to know those guys. We love getting to know them, and it’s truly a special thing for us.”

The Hetzes believe now is a special time for CSU Athletics. Mrs. Hetz offered some additional thoughts on what a burgeoning athletics program can continue to do for the university in the years ahead.

With Mr. Barber here, there’s been a whole new culture in the athletic department. There’s a lot more inter-sport connectivity. Whenever we see each other on campus, we always give each other a wave. Whether we meet each other in the weight room or just through supporting at games, Athletes-for-Athletes really helps that feeling of family. That’s been cool to see develop.

I think the most important thing to note is that we are more than athletes - in the way that we interact with each other, and the way we move beyond just sports. Getting involved with CSU Athletics, you’d be getting involved not only with people who are interested in the pursuit of their own success, but they’re interested in fostering success for other people as well. I think that passion is just interesting to be around. We are extremely dedicated to what we came here to do, and passionate about CSU.

I think definitely now that we have the new locker room and the Singleton Complex, everybody loves coming to the field early, staying late, playing pingpong late at night, doing homework and just being together as a team. That new locker room has definitely been a difference maker for us as a program. Then our coaches - it gives us a different atmosphere than most college baseball programs because they’re so relatable ‘cause they’re only 5, 6, 8 years older than us. Basically, they’re like older brothers to us and it makes it easy to converse with them.

I really loved the coaches and when I got here, everyone was so nice. And, Charleston weather is just beautiful. My parents played a big role in my choosing to go here. They loved the place, loved the area, loved the atmosphere and I loved it too. Just the people here - they’re special. Everyone’s so nice and loving and kind. Everyone just welcomes you and you feel like family here.

I’m from Tennessee so CSU was really attractive - on the coast, nice location, there’s a beach and it’s a Christian university. It’s been a great experience. Winning - to make it short - probably winning has been my favorite part. We have a vision ahead of us. Coach Thompson wants to get better and not just look at the Big South Conference. We’re striving for even bigger and better things.

I was talking about this with Coach the other day - just how much I’ve grown just being here for a year and a half now is amazing. In running, but really in everything. In my classes, as a Christian Studies major, the different classes have really opened up my eyes as to how much I really don’t know (laughing). My professors here are all brilliant and getting to listen and learn from them shows how far I still have to go. They’re great mentors.

BUCCANEER ATHLETIC CENTERSince opening in the summer of 2012, the Buccaneer Athletic Center has served as home to the Football and Track & Field programs. The building houses state-of-the-art locker rooms as well as expanded athletic training facilities. In the hallway, great moments in the respective histories of each program are depicted, instilling a sense of tradition in each student-athlete that

passes through CSU.

ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE CENTERA huge part of building championship-level programs is strength and conditioning, and the Athletic

Performance Center provides a high-level environment for CSU athletes to train. The 8,000-square-foot facility features a 5,000-square-foot weight room outfitted with the latest in Sorinex technology. A nutrition bar is also housed here, giving athletes the fuel they need to improve in-season and out. A 3,000-square foot meeting space, along with breakout meeting rooms, provides football an ideal spot to meet as a team, as well as to welcome prospective recruits.

Facility EnhancementWe are constantly striving to improve in each and every area of our department, and facility enhancement is an essential part of this process. First-class venues speak to our commitment to winning and will help us attract and retain student-athletes who can take our programs to the next level.

With your help, we have made significant progress over the last several years. The following projects have benefited our coaches and students, and we hope to build better and better venues in the years ahead.

Sharonda Coleman-Singleton. Singleton, the mother of former CSU outfielder and Chicago Cubs’ farmhand Chris Singleton, was a constant and vocal presence at Buccaneer Field before losing her life, along with eight others, in the Emanuel AME Church shooting. The Memorial Plaza, containing nine palmetto trees, pays tribute to the victims. Inside, a 3,500-square-foot two-story building features a locker room, training room and the Sharonda Coleman-Singleton Enrichment Center, where baseball players can study to prepare for life after CSU.

NIELSEN FIELD AT CSU BALLPARKFormer Buccaneer catcher Roger Nielsen (BCC Class of 1974) and his wife, Joyce, donated $500,000 to enhance baseball’s efforts in recruiting, training and player instruction. The playing surface at CSU Ballpark has been renamed Nielsen Field to honor the Nielsen’s incredible generosity.

NEW FOOTBALL OFFICESIn January 2019, new head football coach Autry Denson and his staff moved into brand new offices in the CSU Field House. The 2,500-square-foot space gives the Bucs’ coaches ample opportunity for position meetings and recruiting visits that will help the program compete at the top of the Big South.
