1 BUCK CREEK UMC NEWSLETTER ALL CHURCH BIRTHDAY PARTY An All Church Birthday party- carry-in brunch was held on Sunday, June 14, 2009, incorporating the Pastor’s birthday. What a lot of fun this celebration was. Tables were set up for each month of the year. After you filled your plate, you sat at the appropriate table for your birth month. The party was a huge success. There have never been so many people stay for a carry-in, or so much laughter in the air! It was a great mixer! A big thank you to Jane Arnold for this great idea---it deserves to be repeated. (The last one was held when Rev. Kendall was pastor at BCUMC from 1977- 1995, so sometime in there.) Also, each table had a birthday cake, provided by one of the members of each birthday table. Pastor Dwight judged the cakes for the most original. It was a tie between Trudy Germain (for January) and Faye Merkel (for February). See close-ups of the winning cakes on page 21. FIVE QUESTIONS Getting to know two more members of our church family, a little better! This month it’s husband and wife, Bev & Lorena Poore. Will you be next? BEV POORE 1. Where were you born? Tazewell, Tennessee 2. How long have you been a gardener? 35 years 3. What’s your favorite thing to plant? Green bean & tomatoes 4. What’s your favorite part of church? Like all part of church. 5. What part of the newspaper do you read first? Front page. LORENA POORE 1. What’s your earliest memory---how old were you? I was maybe 4 or 5. My grandmother had been living with us, and they took me outside so I wouldn’t know she was leaving. 2. What is the kindest thing your husband Bev has ever done for you? Probably the latest thing was when he has put drops into my eyes for me after I’ve had cataract surgery. 3. If you could have any job in the church, what would it be? Really don’t know. Always enjoyed singing but never had the voice to do much of it. I’ve always been a follower not a leader. 4. What’s your favorite vegetable? Maybe peas. 5. What are your hobbies? I’ve always sewn for the Kids but haven’t done much lately. Quilting, reading, crossword puzzles. Flowers in the summertime.

SUNDAY SCHOOL AWARDS: 2009 The 2009 BCUMC Sunday School Awards ceremony was held on May 31, 2009.

> Pam Church's K-3 class: Ethan Louthen, Claire Handy, Alivia Green. They learned a lot about Moses leading God’s people to the Promised Land. God’s people had to cross the water and the desert but God took care of them. The students received a bag of goodies related to Moses and the water.

> Deb Davidson's 4-5th was Drew Davidson, Haleigh Taylor, Makayla Taylor, Robert Mueller, Andrew Gillum, Hunter Metro-Lucies, Riley Metro-Lucies. They memorized books of the bible for the Old and New Testaments and to celebrate ate breakfast at Deb's house once for the Old and New. Deb says, at the breakfast in May, Hunter led us in prayer before we ate and also brought cookies for everyone in class one Sunday. Haleigh had the whole class help clean the church one Sunday because her dad was out of town...that was when I saw their desire to serve for the first time!

Jim & Anita Davidson’s Middle School/Sr. High class: Jon Monical, Anna Monical, Paige Davidson, Spencer Davidson, Austin Church, Tina Stratton, Elizabeth Beam, Abby Thompson, Teia Louthan and Parker Mitchell. Jim said a little about each student and what they have done this

year, and each received a bag of goodies. Anita says they have enjoyed teaching the class and will miss them over the summer!

Ralph Rohrer's Adult Class: In 2008-2009, we studied Revelations, the final book of the Bible. We studied the book's imagery and use of numbers and symbols, its references and allusions to other scriptural passages, its use at the time of its writing, and its application to us. We looked at it as an eschatological prophecy and as a experiential guide for the spiritual life of a person. We talked about the uses of the book's imagery in hymns and music. We talked about popular mis-interpretations of the book. After we completed that study, we discussed the two books that Bishop Coyner recommended at last year's Annual Conference: Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations and Three Simple Rules. The former focuses on things that congregations can do to be faithful and fruitful followers of Christ: Radical hospitality, Passionate worship, Intentional faith development, Risk taking mission and service, Extravagant generosity. The latter focuses on things that individuals can do to be faithful and fruitful followers of Christ: Do no harm, do good, and stay in love with God. We also made the Easter eggs to distribute to the community. Each egg had some candy and an invitation to attend Easter services. Next year we may return to the Five Practices or we may study King David.

Sunday School will be on hiatus until Autumn, September 7th, 2009. NEEDED: Sunday School Coordinator. See Pastor Dwight.

ROAD REPORT Some tips to keep in mind when traveling in the Buck Creek area: Both 625 & 500 East are closed for now due to Hoosier Heartland bridge construction. 500 E is closed from 300 N to 400 N. The detour is taking drivers through Buck Creek. Be careful if you drive 450 North out of Buck Creek to State Road 25 N. A traffic signal has been installed there to help with the construction traffic. (Temporary until 2012.) Drivers on 25 are not used to stopping there, so be very careful!

KEEPING UP WITH KAIROS On Sunday, May 24, 2009, during Moments for Ministry, we heard feedback on Kairos from Jim & Anita Davidson, and Clayton Temple. + ANITA: I went to serve on the kitchen team. I stayed at a church and we cooked for the prisoners and Kairos team members. There were 7-8of us together. We were not only serving God by preparing food. One day I wasn't feeling well. The others told me to go and lay down. I felt bad as when I make a commitment I want to follow it through. I thought as I was lying there, at least I can pray for the guys on the team and the cooks. After I got up a couple of hours later, I felt better. I was told while I was resting, a homeless man came into the church looking for help. They told him they were not from this church; they were there to work for Kairos. He had lost all his money and was living out of his truck. He wouldn't get paid for a while and he was REALLY hungry. There were tears in his eyes and he was very humble. We had food and they packaged some up for him. We were there for him. It's a wonderful story. Thanks for all your prayers. + JIM: Inside the prison many of you have gone with us, with the cookies you made and the prayers. We had the opportunity to go into the place where the prisoners are kept, and serve Kairos cookies during their chow time. The CO's (correction officers) stood behind us. We didn't know how we would be received. With TV and things it puts into your mind how tough prison can be, and you're on guard a little bit. The guys start coming through the line, the CO's are there, and we are able to say to them, these are Kairos cookies and people are praying for you and on your behalf. In their eyes you see a hint of softness there. These are hardened criminals, but you can still see hope and know you've helped touched each life. They are carrying their trays; we are putting the cookies between their fingers. They wanted to put their stuff down and shake our hands. They accepted the love of Jesus Christ as we shared it. + CLAYTON: When I heard about Kairos, it seemed to really speak to me to do, and it would be an interesting experience. The group we had---about 90% of them had one or more children on the outside. It was really heart breaking. There were a lot of sincere wishes to get out and do better. It was very moving. The group of "kids" I had---so many said they shouldn't be there, that it was the system's fault. One in particular had been in a fight the previous week and was going to be moved to a stricter facility. On the last day at the closing, we have open mic. He stood up and apologized to the people he had hurt and got into trouble. He was

20

very sincere and there was no one there to impress. It just meant a lot that that kid, in a matter of 4 days of Kairos, to his owning up to his actions and words. Jim let us know that the next Kairos is November 5, 2009. They are always looking for others to serve. Keep your options open. Ask God what it is He wants you to do...

Being Communion Steward is a pleasing and simple task for our Lord. You provide the elements of: one loaf of unsliced bread, a bottle of grape juice, and about 150 pieces of cut-up bread. The trays and cups will be waiting for you when you come to church (a little early before worship) to fill the cups, and place the bread on the trays. These elements should then be placed on the altar upstairs. The breads are to be covered with white cloths (provided). The silver chalice should also be placed on the altar. After worship, please retrieve the leftover elements and take downstairs. The used communion cups may be retrieved from the pews and disposed of (children are fond of helping with this!). Thank you for considering! Don’t forget to keep 2010 in mind!

Then pour over crumb mixture. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
