    Chapter Eight

    Sunnydale

    August 25, 2001

Theres no point in denying it, Giles spoke into the phone. I know he was here. Youknow he was here. Good God, man, I even know why you sent him here. So dont play the feeble

old codger with me. Just because you like to pretend doesnt mean I have the stomach for it anymore. Giles took a breath. So I ask you again, where is Wesley Wyndham-Pryce?

Even if I did know, Ian James responded after a pause, you dont think I would tellyou, would I?

Giles sighed. His life may be in danger. Im sure you know the situation here inSunnydale. Wesleys life could be hanging in the balance at this very moment, and Im the only

    one who could help him.

Youd like that, wouldnt you? James snapped. A chance for little Rupert to be thehero again, to prove to all his colleagues at the Council that he really was smarter? I dont bloodythink so, Giles. You may be enamoured of your reputation as the only man the Slayer trusts, but

it doesnt mean a damn thing here where we do the real work.Giles swore under his breath. The real work? A bunch of bespectacled tweed-clad farts

sitting around drinking tea and discussing theory? Youre as useless as an Old War WivesBridge Club. The real work is done here, by the Slayer, and those who help her, not by a bunch

of old men who strain their arms from patting themselves on the back.Go to hell, Rupert, James spat. You think you can just defy the Council for years and

then turn to us for help?Giles growled, Im not asking you for help! Im offering to help save the life of

someone whom you still care about. Its not about me, you damned dense idiot. If it were up tome Id never call you again.

James hissed, To think what your father would say if he heard you speak that way.Spare me the daddy chat, if you please, Giles retorted. Now, you can sit there and be

bitter because you pissed away your chance to help guide the greatest slayer in five centuries, oryou can swallow that monstrous pride and accept that unlike you I care about the fortunes of

others. So just tell me if you know where Wesley is -- bloody Christ, Ian, you dont even have totell me where he is, just that you know hes safe.

James took a deep breath. Id rather die than tell you anything, he uttered.Giles scowled with anger, his eyes ablaze. Right now more than anything I hope to God

you have to make that decision one day, because Id happily live with either outcome. He

slammed the phone down, exhaling loudly, and let loose a stream of profanity that threatened totake the paint off the walls. He moved to the refrigerator and took out a bottle of MurphysAmber, twisting open the beer and taking a long sip.

So started was he by the knock on the door that he nearly dropped the bottle. Coming,he called out, checking outside his window first; the sun had started to set, but was still above the

horizon. Cant be too careful. He opened the door to find Oz and Willow standing there, holdinghands.

Hi Giles! Willow said, smiling. Just came to drop off my boyfriend.

Giles frowned at Willow for a moment. You know, the whole fangs-four legs-lots of hair thing? Oz reminded him.

Giles shook his head. Of course, Giles said, nodding. Full moon tonight, is that right?Middle of the cycle? He fished in his pocket for the key and handed it to Willow.

She nodded in agreement. Yup. Be right back, she told him, leading Oz toward Giles

storage area. Giles allowed himself a smile. I may be fortunate Willow showed up. Not only canshe help me think about what to do about Wesley, but shell probably help me get over my angerfaster. She has that affect on everyone. Not for the first time, Giles wondered what things would

be like in Sunnydale without the diminutive redhead.Heres hoping I never have to find out.Willow returned shortly, handing Giles his key.

Everything go alright? Giles queried.Fine, Willow replied. This part I like, where he strips down to his underwear and I

take his clothing and keep it safe for him.She blinked at Giles surprised look.

Oh, come on, Giles, Oz and I have been dating for three years. Its not like I haventseen him naked. She sat down on an overstuffed easy chair. You might want to think about

getting a space heater down there, though, for the winter.Giles raised an eyebrow. Ill take it under advisement.

Do you have a moment, Giles? Something weird happened today, and I wanted to run itby you, you know, because, well... you know weird better than anybody.

Giles nodded. Just a moment. He moved back toward the kitchen. Can I get yousomething?

Is there any Diet Coke left? Willow asked.Giles opened the fridge and checked. Sure enough, on the bottom shelf, three cans of Diet

Coke sat all alone, as if the rest of Giles food was afraid to go to near such a product. Gilesallowed himself a small grin; Willow had brought over a case of the stuff earlier in the summer,

telling him that now he would always have some when she came by. He picked out a can andbrought it to her. Theres only a few cans left, he told her. You might want to re-stock.

Willow nodded, popping open the can. Thanks. Ill get some cookies too.Giles sat down.

Willow nearly choked on her soda. Youre having a beer? she asked, her voice rising inpitch. Before sundown?

Giles remarked, Barely. And youre talking about Oz being naked. He held up thebottle. Touch.

Willow laughed, sipping at her soda. So, what did you want to discuss? Giles queried.

Mmmm! Willow mumbled, swallowing the soda. Oz and I tried to go to the Chapel, but we were--

The Chapel? Giles interrupted. The old gothic looking church in the middle of the university grounds thats always

closed?Giles frowned. Something tells me I should have noticed that.

Willow shrugged. Its not like youre exactly slacking off these days.He considered, I suppose. Anyway, do go on.

Well, anyway, Oz and I decided to try to have a look around up there, because...Willow stopped. Oh, crap. I really should have told you about this.

No better time than the present, Giles urged her, sipping at his beer.Willow nodded in agreement. Oz and I were talking about it and I figured out that the

Chapel sits at the center of a pattern of magical directional power flow. Its a center of convergence? Giles wondered. So close to the Hellmouth?

Willow gestured toward him. See? Thats what I thought. But now I think its just

waiting to be activated, thats all.How did you come to this conclusion? Giles inquired.Oz and I took a look at all of the streets in the university area, and we realized that all of

them are named after demons, with each ring around the Chapel bearing the name of anincreasingly powerful level of demon. She took a tug off her Coke. That, and it was built

completely at night. And never opened. Ever.Ever? Giles echoed. But the university was built almost a century ago. He gazed at

Willow. Never in a hundred years? Youre sure?Yep, she confirmed.

Youre probably right, Giles murmured. Likely the Mayor built it for use after hisascension.

Thats what we thought! Willow agreed.Giles frowned. So the two of you, without notifying anyone, went to look at this place, a

focus for the power of evil, by yourselves?Willow looked sheepish. We went during the day.

The epitome of caution, Giles snapped.Well, its not like we could help with the Agrimatto research, or help find where Ethan

was, she pouted. At least we were doing something constructive.Giles nodded. Of course, of course, Im sorry. Please go on.

Right after we hopped the wall -- they have the entrance blocked off -- we met up with aguardian spirit.

Giles raised an eyebrow. Are you certain?Pretty sure, Willow nodded. He looked like a policeman, and I thought he was, until

Oz pointed out that he was wearing a coat that was thirty years out of date.Did you interact with it? Giles asked.

Willow nodded. Uh huh. He could talk, respond, and everything. Hes a pretty smart onefor a guardian spirit. But he fit the profile; came out of nowhere, only appeared when we had

trespassed a certain distance... Willow sat forward. He was a classic textbook guardian spirit, she confirmed.

Giles sat back in his chair. Let me guess. You want to banish him.Willow smiled. Yup. If hes there, there must be something worth protecting. And I

wanna know what it is.With all thats going on, Giles began, Im not sure--

Can we really afford to ignore something like this that could possibly be a great help tous, especially with Ethan and Faith and everything thats going on? She folded her hands

together on her lap.Giles furrowed his brow. Point taken.

Ill just be five minutes, Buffy said, peering through the blinds, watching the last sliverof sunlight dip below the horizon. Dont you two kill each other while Im getting changed.

Who, us? Xander joked, gesturing to himself and Angel. Perish the thought.Make it a quick five minutes, Angel advised her. Ethan was reading that book today.

    Hes making progress.

How do you know? Xander queried.Angel gave him a look. Trust me. I know.Ooh, Buffy remarked. I love him when hes all mysterious. Dont you?

Angel met her eyes, and they both smiled. He winked at her. Buffy winked back andwent in the bathroom, an armload of clothes tucked under one armpit.

Xander finished off his can of Diet Pepsi. Hey, he said, your errand boy was in towntoday.

Angel frowned at Xander. My what? You know, little miss always happy to help, but always ready to bitch about it?

Xander swung his legs up on the couch. You mean Cordelia, Angel translated.

Yup, thats her, Xander confirmed, closing his eyes. Said she had some kinda book forGiles, or something bogus like that.

She did, Angel told him. I asked her to bring it down here for me to give to Giles. Hefrowned. Buffy said you worked today. Howd you run into her?

Xander shrugged, eyes still closed. She came to see me at DIY. Or, rather, she came toflaunt herself in front of me like a streetwalker.

Easy, Angel said. Shes not here. You dont have to act like you dont like her.Xander opened his eyes and looked at Angel. After today, its not gonna be an act. She

was parading around the store in these little leather hot pants, and then -- get this -- shes stilljealous of the fact that I help Buffy out with the slaying. Like she ever wanted to lend a hand to

us in the first place.I dunno, Angel spoke, shes been helpful to me. Youre sure thats why she was

jealous?Xander frowned up at the vampire. Whaddaya mean?

Angel said, She didnt go to DIY to buy lawn furniture, if you get my drift.Xander furrowed his brow. No, she came there to insult me, and--

Angel held up a hand. I dont think so.You werent there, Xander argued.

Youre right, I wasnt, Angel agreed, but I know Cordelia. If she came to your storeall dressed up, she was probably trying to get your attention.

She got that, all right, Xander snapped.Angel restrained himself from rapping Xander on the head. Idiot! he hissed, his voice a

whisper. Xander, Cordelia was probably trying to get you to ask her out.Xander stood up. Then why the hell didnt she say so?

Angel glanced at the bathroom door. Because shes Cordelia. Shes too proud to askyou. You know that.

Xander nodded. You know what, buddy? Shes not my problem any more. I had myyear of hell with Cordelia center of the universe Chase. I dont want her any more. He put his

hands on his hips. Im interested in somebody else.Angel folded his arms. Let me guess.

You said it yourself, Xander murmured. Somebody has to look after her, and youcant. He whispered, I thought you were okay with this.

What this? Angel muttered in reply.Me askin Buffy out.

Angel felt his world stop for a second. You what?

You know, Xander spoke quickly. What you said about bein here and takin care ofher. It made a lot of sense. But I didnt mean--

Xander interrupted, And I appreciate you bein so honest with me. I know how you feelabout Buffy, man. That couldnt have been easy.

Angel blinked.I am not hearing this. Thats not what I--The knob on the bathroom door clicked, and Xander whispered, Shhh! Dont say

anything to Buffy!Angel rubbed his chin, uncertain of exactly what he should or shouldnt say. Buffy

emerged from the bathroom in a pair of black jeans and a dark blue t-shirt. Ready! sheannounced cheerfully. Lets go do the slaying thing. And maybe find our lost little psychopath,

whos taken to kidnapping vampires. She stuck out her tongue. Though why youd want to,ech.

You guys go ahead, Angel told them. I gotta make a call first.Buffy frowned. You sure?

Angel glanced quickly at Xander, then back at Buffy. Im sure. Go ahead. Ill catch upto you at the cemetery.

Buffy shrugged. Have it your way. Dont be long. The first few always die better. Shewinked at Angel and opened the door, exiting. Xander paused a moment, sharing a look with

Angel, and then he followed Buffy.I dont believe this, Angel growled as he picked up Buffys phone and dialed.

Yo, Pike answered. Pike here.Pike, its Angel.

How ya been, Angel? Pike greeted him. Enjoying your vacation in warm tropicalSunnydale?

Not at the moment, Angel replied. Pike, listen, I need a favor.Name it, the young man replied.

Angel rubbed his forehead. I need you to check up on Cordelia. She should be home bynow.

Pikes voice went serious. What happened?Im not sure, Angel answered him, but she may be in bad shape if what I think

happened happened.Hey, Angel, Im not a doctor. I--

Bad shape on the inside, Angel explained. Shes probably gonna need a friend, and Icant be there right now.

Pike sighed. Im on it, he promised. You know, Rachels better at this sort of thing,and--

Angel grinned. Cordelia doesnt open up to women. Trust me, Ive known her fiveyears. Its gotta be you.

Pike shook his head. You got it. Ill fill you in tomorrow. Thanks, Angel told him. I owe you one.

Yes, Pike agreed, yes, you do.

*You dont seriously think were gonna spot Faith, do ya? Xander asked, looking

around.I doubt it, Buffy responded. But I like to dream big.Cant you, like, pick up on vampires? Xander queried.

Buffy gave him a look. When theyre close, yah, I know theyre coming. But Im notlike vampire radar. I cant just stand on top of a hill and point out vampires.

Be kinda neat if you could, though, Xander admitted.Buffy kicked at a pebble. Right now it would be, yeah.

Xander suggested, We could start checkin motels. There arent that many in Sunnydale.Ethans gotta be in one of them.

Theres enough so that I wouldnt want to try it, Buffy responded.Just suggestin, thats all, Xander told her, holding up his hands. Youre the coach.

We run your plays.Buffy regarded him. That doesnt ever bother you?

What? Xander asked as they slipped over the low stone wall into the graveyard. That Im in charge all the time? she asked.

Xander shrugged. Kinda goes with you bein the Slayer, yknow?Buffy chuckled softly. Thats not really an answer.

Buff, its not like Im gonna have an ego with you. He paused. I dont have much ofone anyway. But last time I read how things work, theres the chosen one, and then theres

everybody else. Xander pointed a thumb at his chest. Im an everybody else.No youre not, Buffy said quietly.

Xander stopped. What do you mean?I mean, Buffy said, turning to face him, youre not an everybody else. Everybody else

would have booked already. Everybody else would have taken a good look at my life and left asfast as they could. She twisted one corner of her lip up. But you guys -- Will, Oz, you -- you

stayed with me. I appreciate that.Xander tried to sound casual. Where else is there to be? he asked. What else is gonna

compare to you? he added quickly, I mean, to this.Buffy spoke, I dunno. Look at Cordelia. She did the smart thing. She up and booked.

That wasnt smart, Xander murmured. That was selfish.Buffy looked at him. At least she has a life.

Xander turned to her. How can somebody leave this? he asked. I mean, look at whatyou go through, Buffy. Look at what you have to do. Hell, you deserve people like me and

Willow and Giles and Oz who are gonna stay with you. People who leave you arent worth adamn.

Buffy raised an eyebrow. Somebody had their Wheaties this morning.Xander told her, I mean it. Its not like theres another job in the world where you know

youre fighting evil. Okay, maybe a cop. Maybe. But even thats not like this. I mean, we savethe world here, Buff. You save the world. Thats big. Its important. Its worth not havin a life

for.Buffy stopped walking. Xander, dont talk like that. Dont.

Why not? he asked.Because you have a choice, Buffy told him. You can leave Sunnydale. You can be

somebody. Have a girlfriend. Get married. Travel. Do something with your life. you dont haveto do this. I do. This is my choice. I just didnt make it, thats all. But I have to do this gig. You

    dont.

Yes, I do, Xander told her softly.Buffy shook her head. Nope. You can go. Anytime you want.Xander put his hands on his hips. Okay, then I choose this life. I choose not to leave

here. To not leave you.Sooner or later, youre gonna have to, Buffy murmured.

He shook his head. No Im not. Buff, some people never know what they wanna do withtheir lives. I do. I wanna help you.

Buffy sighed. Xander, you cant--Yes, I can, he told her. Willow can, Oz can, hell, even Angel can. And so can I. And I

do.Buffy blinked back a tear. Youre a hell of a friend, you know that? she said, hugging

him. I do my best, he whispered, holding her tight.

She released him, stepping back, and wiped at her nose. Your best is pretty damnedgood. She met his eyes for a moment, startled by the intensity of his look, and then she glanced

away. Now come on, lets go kick some vampire ass.Xander smiled. I love it when you talk dirty, he joked.

Buffy gave him a long look. What would you do if I had never come to Sunnydale? sheasked after a moment.

Thats an easy one, he confessed. Id be a vampire. We all would. Wed all beworking for the Master. He swung a lazy fist at her shoulder, tapping it. Thats another one I

have to thank you for.Buffy shook her head. You get any more sugary, Im gonna be a diabetic.

Xander grinned. Hey, kissin up is the sidekicks job, he told her.Buffy laughed, and Xander joined her.

    *Los Angeles

Cordelia flicked off the TV and put the remote down on the cluttered coffee table, next tothe empty carton of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream. She lay back on the couch and

sighed, closing her eyes. The sun had set maybe an hour before, but in her little apartment it had

been dark all day. She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, trying to let all the tension out ofher body. Why? she croaked softly, and with that single word something in her snapped, and

tears began to well up in her eyes. She clenched her fists and tried to fight them, but slowly theyrolled down her cheeks.I am not going to sit here and cry over Xander Harris, she told herself.

Im not, Im not, Im not.

She sat up, reaching around in the dark for the tissues. She found one and blew her nose,

pitching it into the wastebasket. Why him? What the hell is it about him that I cant get him out

of my head? I havent thought about him in like two years, and suddenly Im like a little girlwhen I see him again. What is wrong with me?

I had lots of guys in high school, she told herself, sighing. I havent even done thatbad since Ive been in L.A.But, her brain argued. You know the but.

I know, she snuffled aloud, reaching for another tissue. But none of them are goddamn

Xander Harris. He has a shitty job, she murmured. He still doesnt know how to dress, and he still hasthat pathetic hang-up on Buffy. Hell never make any money, and hell always be a loser, and...

She inhaled deeply as another tear slid down her cheek. And Ill always have this stupidthingforhim, just because I was dumb enough to fall in love with him in high school. Just because he

actually cared about me no matter how hard I tried to push him away. He was so clueless he justwouldnt go away.

Cordelia sat up, blowing her nose again, and wandered off toward her bedroom, stillfighting back her tears. And now hes gonna go after Buffy, and hes gonna get his heart broken.

Serves him right, dammit. He deserves to feel what Im feeling. He should know what its like tobe rejected, to want somebody really badly and just not be able to have them, and...

Cordelia sank down to the bed. This is Xander Harris Im crying over here, she toldherself. The man who cheated on me with Willow. The idiot who has a crush on the one girl he

can never get. Cordelia rolled over on her side. Im right here, you jackass. Why are you sostupid that you cant see that?

And why am I so stupid that I want you? she asked herself. Look at you. You didntgo to college, youll never make more than twenty thousand a year -- if that -- and youll always

be out there like a child fighting demons and ghouls and vampires. Grow up!Okay, her brain allowed, but he was also the one who saw through all the walls you put

up and managed to get to you. He was the only one who took all your shit and came back formore. No one else has done that.

Then where the hell is he, if he liked me so much? she whispered.Just at that moment, her buzzer rang.

For a moment Cordelia could not believe her ears. She sat up on the bed, hope flaring upin her like a hot spark, that maybe he had reconsidered, maybe he had come up here to L.A.

and...Why would I want that? Why would I want Xander Harris to come here, unless it was to

apologize for being such an asshole. I can do better than him. This just proves it. Any other guywould have asked me out this afternoon, but he has to go and insult me and tell me that I look

like a hooker, and damn him, I--

The buzzer sounded again. Cordelia fought with herself for a long moment before

deciding to answer it. Yes? she asked into the speaker.Cordelia, its Pike. Can I come up?

Pike? she asked. What are you doing here?I was in the neighborhood, he responded. Figured Id say hey.

At night? she queried. Why arent you out hunting vampires with Shelley andRachel?

A long pause. Then Pike said, Something told me I might do more good here.Cordelia slapped the buzzer, letting him in.

Its either that or cry all night, she told herself. And I have cried over Xander Harrisfor the last time.

Im still not entirely comfortable coming here after dark, Wesley muttered, eyeing thesputtering neon sign that advertised Willys bar.

Be kinda hard to meet with the vampire before sunset, Jill told him.

How can you be sure this isnt a trap? Wesley wondered as they approached the door.I cant, Jill told him. Im betting Willy wants the money.

Wesley grumbled, Im sure some vampires could afford to pay him more than fourhundred dollars. And that theyd love to get their hands on a Watcher.

Jill placed a hand on the door. Thats a risk Im willing to take, she said. Come on.They entered Willys; the clock above the door read nine-thirty, marking them as being

right on time. Willy nodded at their arrival. Two shadowy figures loitered in the rear, hangingaround the pool table but not playing. A large man wearing a white cowboy hat sat at the bar.

Hello, Willy, Jill greeted the bartender. Wesley remained silent.Willy nodded his hello. Then he glanced at the cowboy and jerked his head in Jills

    direction.

The cowboy turned to face the Watchers, and a smile split his face.Evenin, maam, he greeted Jill. Willy here never told me youd be so purty.

Jill raised an eyebrow. Should I be flattered? The cowboy turned to face her. Hell, maam, you sure should be. Its not every day a

gorgeous lil thing like you stumbles into a dive like this. He tipped his hat slightly. LyleGorch, at your service.

Jill made a face. Charmed, Im sure. Im sorry, Mr. Gorch, but were here to meetsomeone.

Gorch nodded and smiled. Yup. Yer here to meet me.Jill nodded no. I really doubt that, Mr.--

She stopped as Gorch revealed his hunting face, still smiling. Hell, I never met aWatcher before. Thats why I agreed to the job. He scratched his ear. Well, that and the part

about some sumbitch kidnappin onea my folk. Gorch frowned. I know yall can be meanwhen yall want to, but kidnappin? Who knows whats going through their devious little minds,

that poor defenseless vampire all tied up somewhere?Indeed, Wesley spoke up.

Hey, Gorch blurted, picking up his whiskey. A Limey. A real live Limey. Now I knowyall are Watchers. Gorch downed the shot. Though yer too purty to be a real Watcher, maam.

You shoulda been a model or an actress or sumthin.

Jill shot Willy a look. This is the best you can do?Willy shrugged. Theres not a lotta demand for workin with the enemy. He thrust achin toward Gorch. Besides, Lyle knows the territory pretty well. Hell help you out.

Wesley spoke up, Mr. Gorch, you do realize there wont be any killing. We just needyou to help us locate the vampire in question and then well take it from there.

Nope, Gorch objected.Nope what? Jill asked.

Gorch gestured toward them. Now, yall get this straight, okay? He gestured to Willyto pour him another shot. I aint helpin yall cause I like ya. I aint even helpin yall fer any

money. Im doin this so that I can get some vampire outta hot water. So I am not gonna sit backand let yall two go in there and stake the poor bastard. Nope.

Willy watched him carefully, filling the shotglass.

I assure you, Wesley said, we have no intention of doing any harm to the vampire. Were just interested in apprehending his kidnappers.Bullshit, Gorch spat, sucking down the shot. Yall are Watchers! Yall help them lil

Slayers hunt us for a livin. Bullshit yall dont wanna hurt a vampire. He sneered at them.Yalld kill me if yall could.

Jill shook her head. You agree to stay back, or no deal, she warned him.Gorch folded his arms. Now who needs who here? Seems to me, maam, that it was

yall came lookin fer someone like me and not tother way round. He gave Jill a cocky look.Go head. Gwan. Find another vampire willin to work with you.

Jill looked at Wesley. All right. You get to free the vampire. But no killing.Gorch nodded. Cross mheart and hope ta die again, maam. Yall got yerselves a deal.

He glanced at Wesley and back to Jill. So where yall wanna start?I thought wed take you to where he was captured and work our way from there,

Wesley informed him.Works fer me, Gorch spoke, shifting his features back to normal. Lets go, lil lady.

He gestured toward the door.Willy cleared his throat. Before the Three Musketeers leave my humble little

establishment, theres the matter of some money that needs to exchange hands. He pointed atJill. Four hundred for my finders fee.

She handed him the money wordlessly. And you, Willy spoke, pointing at Gorch, Six-fifty for the shots.

Gorch swore. I can remember when shots were a nickel a piece, he muttered.Yeah, well, we have refrigerators and electricity now, too, Willy said.

Gorch slapped seven dollars on the bar. Keep the change. I may be a vampire, but yerthe bloodsucker.

Willy collected the money silently and watched the three of them exit into the night.

Think fast! Rachel snapped, tossing a Diet Pepsi at Shelley. The shorter blonde woman

caught it, reflexes taking over as she snatched the can out of the air.

You coulda warned me! Shelley scolded.Hey, you caught it, Rachel argued. No harm, no foul.Shelley popped open the soda, waiting for the fizzing to die down, and took a sip.

What time is it? Rachel asked.Shelley checked her watch. Almost midnight. She took another sip of soda. Quiet

night.Rachel nodded. Thats not a complaint.

Hell, no, Shelley agreed. Kinda weird doin this without Pike, though.

Rachel glanced over at her. Yeah. We did that what -- once? That time with Buffy wherewe ran into Spike and weirdo woman.

Druscilla, Shelley filled in absently.Rachel considered her a moment. You okay?

Just thinkin, thats all, Shelley responded.

About...? Rachel asked, dragging the word out.About whether Buffy needs our help or not, Shelley answered.Dont you think theyd ask? Buffy, or Giles, or somebody?

Shelley frowned. Im not sure. I like to think they would, but maybe they think theyhave it under control. She folded her arms. Something must be going on down there. Angels

been gone almost a week. Hes never gone this long.Youre worried about him and Buffy, Rachel suggested.

Shelley shrugged. Not really. I hate to admit it, but Cordelias right about that. If thoseguys cant stop the two of them, theres nothing we can do. I dont think either of them is stupid

enough to lose control. She brushed her hair behind her ear. Besides, Angel called earlier aboutCordelia. Im wondering if his heart isnt starting to wander.

Rachel blinked. No way. Hes still jonesin on Buffy.Shelley tilted her head. He was cooking Cordelia dinner.

Rachel shook her head. No way, Shelley. Angels still crazy about Buffy. Trust me onthat one. He may be friends with Cordelia, but theres nothin more goin on. She frowned.

And you know it, too.Shelley nodded. Yeah, I guess youre right.

So whats really on your mind? Rachel queried.Shelley stopped walking and stared off across the street, past the dimly lit closed stores,

to the mountains behind them, sparkling with the lights of various homes dotting their sides.Im just worried that Ethans gonna have some major breakthrough, and were all gonna be in

trouble. She looked at Rachel. I cant help but think he knows something no one else does, andwere all gonna get bit on the ass because of that.

Maybe, Rachel agreed. But I think I know whats really bothering you.Shelley raised an eyebrow. Do tell.

Rachel tilted her head. See, I think you believe what Sam said about the amulet. I thinkyou wanna go down there and get that amulet and see if youre in the ol potential Slayer pool. I

mean, yeah, you wanna help Buffy, and yeah, you wanna break some bad guy head, but mostly, you wanna see if fate pointed her fickle little finger in your direction.

Shelley stood still and silent for a long moment; she turned her brown eyes on Rachel. Isthere anything wrong with that? Assuming we beat Ethan and put Faith back in a coma -- or in

jail, whatever -- is there anything wrong with me finding out?Rachel took a deep breath. What if youre not? she asked.

Shelley gave her a long look. What if I am?Rachel shrugged. What if youre not? She threw her hands up. Even if you are, what

are you gonna do? Kill Faith and hope you get picked next? Rachel folded her arms. I dontknow if you noticed, Shell, but youre a little old to be a Slayer. Youre, what, twenty-one?

Twenty-two? Most Slayers are dead by then.I know, Shelley growled sullenly.

Besides, would you really want that gig? Vampires comin after you all the time?Rachel sat down on a bus-stop bench. Looks to me like you got everything a Slayer does except

the magic radar, and hell, sometimes it seems like you got that, too.Shelley bounced her sneaker toe off the side of the bench. Its not the same.

Rachel looked up at her. Why cant you be happy with being you? Youre not Buffy.

Youre not a Slayer. Youre never gonna be a Slayer. Youre Shelley. You got a great guy wholoves you like crazy, a terrific and talented best friend, and you live in this great house on thebeach. Nobody has to work, we all fight vampires, and we have this perfect life. Rachel stood

up. How can you still want more? Hell, youve already done more good in the last three yearsthan most people will do in their whole lives. Why do you need to be Wonder Woman?

Shelley glared at Rachel. Because, she said simply. Not good enough, Rachel hissed. Not by a long shot.

Itll have to do, Shelley replied.Rachel grabbed her by the shoulders and tossed her across the sidewalk onto the grass in

front of the library. The hell it will, Rachel told her. Youre gonna tell me, and youre gonnatell me now.

Shelley rolled with the shove and rose to her feet in a fluid motion. You dont wanna dothis, Rachel, she warned.

Rachel nodded in agreement. Youre right, Shelley, I dont. But you wont tell me, soIm gonna have to beat it out of you.

Shelley blinked. You know Ill kick your ass.I know, Rachel agreed. So?

Shelley shook her head. So why even try it?Rachel shrugged. I could get lucky. Maybe take you.

You still couldnt force me to tell you, Shelley said.Shell, I dont want toforce you. I just want you to tell me. But youre being a stubborn

asshole.Shelley took a long breath. You wanna know, Rachel? You wanna know why I want

that power, that strength, those reflexes?Rachel set her hands on her hips. Yeah.

Shelley spoke, Because one day Im not gonna be fast enough. One day Im not gonnahear that other vampire, or see his buddy, and you, or Pike, will pay the price. And not all the

training in the world can save you when one of those bastards sinks his teeth in you. And itll bemy fault. She closed her eyes. Thats why.

Rachel moved over to Shelley and hugged her. I dont believe you, Rachel muttered, pulling Shelly close. Are you nuts?

No, Shelley pouted, reluctantly hugging Rachel back.Rachel broke the embrace. Shell, you do just damn fine the way you are. Its not your

job to protect us, honey. Its all our jobs to protect each other.Shelley frowned. I know, but...

Rachel wagged a finger. No buts. I dont want to hear any more about this. Let go of it,Shelley. Its eating you up, and me and Pike are worried about you.

Shelley reared back. You are?Rachel nodded. Of course we are. Youve been so driven lately.

I was doing it for you guys, Shelley mumbled.Well, dont, Rachel spoke. We dont want Shelley the Slayer. We want just Shelley.

Shelley shook her head and embraced Rachel. I love you guys, she whispered. And we love you too, Shell. Now lets get you home to Pike.

Shelley moved back from Rachel. What about patrol?Rachel snickered, City can take care of itself for one night. You come first.

Shelley started to protest, but Rachel silenced her with, Or do I have to toss your ass on

the grass again?Love to see you try, Shelley smiled as they started walking back toward the car.

*Still yet another someplace else south of Sunnydale

The vampire slowly lifted his head, his senses still swimming. He blinked, and again,

trying to clear his tired eyes. His arms and legs felt stiff, and he tried to stretch; abruptly heremembered where he was, and he swore vehemently.

Our charge appears to have regained consciousness, Ethan announced.

Bout time, Faith groused. I was gettin sick of goddamned Tom and Jerry. Shethumbed the TV off and dropped the remote. Hes a mouse. Just eat him already.

    Ethan grinned. Ever the hunter.

You know it, E, she smiled.Ethan gazed at Faith a long moment. Her eyes seemed brighter, her mind sharper, and her

cheeks no longer looked sunken. Her thin body seemed almost to be bursting with energy. Herested his hand on his chin. Why dont you try a little exercise, Faith? he suggested casually.

I just started walkin yesterday, she replied. I mean really walkin, not that stumblinaround shit with the cane. I dont wanna push it.

Ethan gave her his best smile. Humor me, Faith. Try a push up.A push up? she echoed. You sure?

He nodded. You can do it. Im certain of it.Faith gave him a doubtful look but hunched over on her hands and the balls of her feet.

Slowly, gingerly, she lowered her torso toward the ground, touching her breast to the thinlycarpeted floor, and rising back up. She looked up at Ethan, smiling. Howd you know?

Do another, he encouraged her.She dipped rapidly and rose again. She looked up again at him, uncomprehendingly.

Try for five, he urged.Faith pumped her biceps, sinking to the floor and popping up again in rapid succession.

She sank her knees to the floor and sat up on her haunches, her breath coming a little fast. Okay,

E, spill it; howd you know I could do that? She ran a hand through her dark mass of hair. What a creature you will be when you are strong again, whole again, Ethan mused,

looking at the young woman gazing up at him. I had a theory about your healing abilities, heinformed her. Seems I was right.

The vampire chuckled, a low snarling sound. You find something amusing? Faith snapped at him.

The vampire sneered. You.Faith stood up and moved over to him. You wanna explain that?

The vampire regarded her. Svengali over there figured it out. Didnt you, old man?Faith slapped the vampire across his face. Hes not old.

Old enough to be your daddy, the vampire taunted. Faith pulled her arm back, forminga fist, but Ethan intercepted her.

Thats what he wants, he murmured to Faith. But we need him, Faith. We still needhim.

I am so gonna kill you when were done with you, Faith hissed.

That wont be for a while yet, the vampire snarled back. He jutted his chin at Ethan.Ask him why, Faith.Faith scowled at the vampire but looked up at Ethan. Whats this asshole talkin about?

Ethan gave her a long look and then turned his steely gaze on the vampire. What ourguest is referring to is your Slayer ability. He scratched his ear. Its an unlooked for benefit, I

grant you. He gave her a half smile. I wonder if the Watchers ever figured it out. Though Idont suppose any of their Slayers spend prolonged amounts of time around a vampire.

Faith shook her head. What the hell are you gettin at?Youre healing faster because of me, the vampire offered. The Slayer part of you is

going nuts that youre this close to a vampire. Its telling you to kill me. Its pumping up yourbody, making you stronger, so that you can do what you were built to do.

Faith blinked, looking over at Ethan. Is he shittin me?I dont think so, Ethan commented. I think hes right. Your Slayer power is trying to

protect you by toughening your body and making you ready to slay again. Spending a longperiod of time in proximity to a vampire is kicking it into a higher gear, so to speak.

So this jerk is helpin me heal faster? Faith queried, gesturing with her thumb towardthe vampire.

Precisely, Ethan answered her.Faith shook her head. This is fucked up.

That Ill agree to, Ethan muttered. At any rate, he and I should resume translatingAlarics journal. Ethan looked at the vampire. We made excellent progress yesterday, but we

still have a fair amount of ground to cover. How much more time, ythink? Faith asked.

If our friend can keep the pace he set yesterday, Ethan spoke, we should be finishedtomorrow, or Tuesday the latest.

Faith snickered, You sure we can stay in one hotel room that long? Thatd have to be arecord.

Too risky to move him, Ethan explained. Its taking a chance not to move around, butI need the rest of this book translated. Well have to hope that Giles and his little charges remain

as in the dark as they have been so far.Faith smiled. Man, are they gonna be shocked when we come out swingin.

Ethan nodded. Indeed. He fished in his pockets and pulled out two ten dollar bills. Why dont you go across the street and get us some breakfast?

Faith took the money. No shit? Really? By myself?I think youre ready, and God knows you need the food.

She nodded. So whatta you want?Flapjacks, raspberry syrup, and three strips of bacon. And a black coffee. And get

whatever you like, Faith. She winked at him. Gotcha. She opened the door wide, letting the sunlight stream in,

forming a large rectangle on the carpet. She made sure the vampire saw her stand in the sunlight, and then she closed the door and headed off across the street.

Youre gonna be in trouble when she realizes she doesnt need you to get better, thevampire hissed up at Ethan.

Ethan punched him on the cheek, snapping his head around. Then youll just have tomake sure she doesnt learn that, understood? He leaned in close. I got you. I can get another

vampire. You are the very essence of expendable.

The vampire mulled over Ethans words for a minute, then looked up at his captor.Youre keeping her around so you can try out the spell on her, arent you?Ethan responded by lifting a stake off the table. Another word out of you and youll be

dust. I mean it. Youre not stupid, and Id rather work with you than find some moron bloodsucker out there. But I will kill you without hesitation. Ive come much too far to be

thwarted by a vampire who presumes he is clever. The vampire nodded. Thwart you? he echoed. Man, if you can pull this off, Ill help

you.Ethan tapped the laptop to life and opened the book on the chair in front of the vampire.

Lets begin, shall we? he asked.

*Its hopeless, Wesley yawned. That vampire is not going to help us find Ethan. Look

how far away from Sunnydale he led us! Hes just taking us in circles so that we waste our time

and dont accomplish anything. Likely hes surmised that Ethan is up to no good, and anythingthat we think is no good must by needs be to him a great idea.

Jill stirred her coffee. I dont know, Wesley, she replied. Gorch seems on the level tome. He covered a lot of ground last night, and he seemed to know what he was doing. Okay, we

came up empty, granted. But he seemed to be operating on more than guesswork. And I didntget the feeling that he was yanking our chain.

Wesley frowned. Yanking our chain? he asked, slicing his bacon. You know, leading us around, wasting our time.

Ah, he agreed. Yes, well, you can never trust a vampire. You trust Angel, Jill argued.

Thats different, Wesley reminded her. He has a soul. That makes him unique, andworth trusting. This Gorch fellow is a whole different story.

Ill say, Jill remarked. Hes awfully crude. Even for a member of the undead.Somehow I dont think turning Lyle Gorch into a vampire made him any meaner or any

more crass, Wesley ventured. I think he was a bad egg when he was human.Probably, said Jill. But at least we got somebody old. Gorch is over a hundred and

twenty years old.So he says, Wesley added, scooping up a forkful of eggs.

Jill sipped on her coffee, frowned, and added another packet of sugar. Im inclined tobelieve him. The details of his stories were a little too accurate and a little too real. How many

vampires do you know of who care enough about their tall tales to research them?Im afraid I dont know many vampires, Wesley admitted. And after last night, Im

not eager to change that.Im with you, Jill said, taking a bite out of her toast. So, we have until sundown to

work on this ourselves, she yawned.

After we nap, Wesley muttered. Im not really accustomed to pulling all-nighters. Afew hours sleep should have me right as rain, though.

Jill scratched her arm. Im gonna need a bath, too. Vampires hang out in the scuzziestplaces.

Well, Wesley joked, its not like they are invited into polite society.

Jill smiled, taking another sip on her coffee. So what other angles can we attack on this -- say, maybe this afternoon? We must be cautious about my visibility, Wesley reminded her. Were working

against the Slayer and her friends, all of whom recognize me. He glanced out the window at thefeatureless buildings that surrounded them, a run-down gas station, a convenience store, and a

shoddy motel. This far away from the heart of Sunnydale, I dont think it will be an issue,but...

Jill nodded in agreement. Fine. I can do the legwork. But where? Its still your town.Hopefully not for long, Wesley spoke. We dont really have any archives in town we

can get to, so I suggest we hole ourselves up at your house and work on your computer.Okay, Jill yawned. Sounds like a plan. She frowned slightly. Its too bad we cant

go to Giles. He knows Ethan from college. That hasnt helped him very much so far, Wesley commented. Rayne seems to be one

step ahead of him all the time. It almost seems like Giles is somehow daunted by his formerfriend -- as if he admits hes not as smart.

Is he? Jill queried.Wesley put his fork down and gazed at Jill thoughtfully. Rupert Giles is almost always

underestimated. Hes intelligent, clever, resourceful, and loyal to his friends. It is a shame wecant involve him in our search -- he might be able to offer some interesting insights. But hes

also proud and stubborn, traits that a Watcher does not the luxury for. And he thinks he knowswhats better for the Slayer than the Council.

Doesnt he? Jill asked. Six years is nothing to sneeze at. Buffys quite a Slayer.Wesley raised an eyebrow. Obviously youve never met her.

I was sort of hoping, on this trip, that maybe Id get a little glimpse of her. You know.Being a field agent is challenging, but we never get to see her, just read about her.

Careful what you wish for, Wesley intoned. Behind him, the door to the place swungopen, the bell hanging from the top jingling.

Jill took a deep breath and nearly gagged on her toast. Is something wrong? Wesley asked.

She shook her head. Not at all, she replied quickly. Would you excuse me for aminute? She smiled awkwardly. All that coffee. She gestured toward the restrooms.

Wesley grinned politely. Of course.Jill stood up; the restrooms lay past the cash register at the end of the counter, on the far

side of the front door. She walked slowly, trying not to stand out from the other diners at all. Shepaused for a moment as she passed behind the young woman who had just walked in.

To go, the thin brunette told the waitress. An order of pancakes, raspberry syrup, withthree strips of bacon. Coffee, black. And two Denver omelets, an order of French Toast, two

bagels with cream cheese, another black coffee, a large OJ, and... She squinted at the menuposted on the front of the cash register, And an order of hash browns.

Thatll be a few minutes, the waitress replied.Cool, the woman told her.

Jill managed a glance at the young womans face before she headed into the restroom. Holy shit, holy shit! she told herself, moving toward the pay phone. Hastily she dialed her

calling card number, and then an international code.Quentin Travers, please, she murmured into the phone.

Travers here, the clipped British voice responded after a moment.

Jill Kinkaid here, she mumbled. Ive located Faith. Ill have her on a plane bytonight.Do you need a support team? I can have one to you by...five p.m. your time.

No, Jill told him. I have it covered. Shes thin as a rail. I can get her without anyhelp.

Are you certain? Travers pressed.Jill considered. You land a bunch of Watchers in town, Giles might notice and blow our

cover. No. Let me handle this.Dont fail, Travers warned her.

Thats not my plan, she assured him, hanging up the phone. She headed back towardWesley, foregoing the restroom. I better distract him. If he sees her, hell do something stupid.

She moved casually back toward their table and told Wesley, I think one more cup of coffee isin order, dont you?

Giles opened his door in response to the gentle knocking. He furrowed his brow at Ozand Willow. That took a little longer than usual, he observed.

Sometimes Oz is a little groggy and hard to wake up, especially on the middle night,Willow explained. You have to really work on getting him awake. She led him inside.

Giles frowned after them. Ive never had that problem when I go to fetch him, hementioned.

Willow widened her eyes. Lucky you, she enthused awkwardly. He-he can be a realbear sometimes.

Oz gave her a look. Actually more like a wolf.Right, she giggled, a wolf. Not a bear. But definitely, definitely like an animal. She

looked at Oz. But gentle too.Giles raised an eyebrow. Yes, well, I think Im beginning to get the picture. He closed

the door and moved to his dining room table, grabbing the backpack that lay there. I have all the

tools we should need to take care of your little guardian spirit. Shall we?Yes, please, Willow breathed, clutching Ozs hand.

After you, Giles gestured toward the door. Oz moved along, tugging Willow after him.Giles came up behind them and paused on the doorstep to lock the door.

You think he knows? Willow whispered to Oz, her face radiating concern.I think he knows now, Oz responded.

Willow stroked his cheek. I couldnt help it, she mumbled. You were all naked andcuddly and--

I did a little research on the Chapel last night, in between rather futile attempts to learnanything more about Agrimatto, or Alaric. It seems your suspicions are correct, Willow. There

are no records of any construction materials or dedication ceremonies, and the building has neverbeen used. At least not by anyone living.

Sounds like half of Sunnydale, Oz commented.

Not quite, Giles replied, leading toward his Beetle. Willow was right that this buildingsits at the power of a focus of dark energies. That in and of itself bears further investigation. Heopened the doors. Even with all of the tomes I was able to liberate from the Mayors office after

his demise, I still couldnt find anything on the Chapel. Giles clucked as they got in the car.For a man enamoured of making lists and keeping records, he wrote frustratingly little about

that building.Maybe he kept any records about it stored inside the building, Oz suggested.

That would kill any paper trail, Willow agreed.Giles started the car. Yes, perhaps. He pulled out of his parking space. But it seems

awfully unlike the mayor to put all of his eggs in one basket, as it were.Oz and Willow shrugged as Giles navigated the way to the same parking lot Willow and

Oz had used the day before. As a member of the faculty, Giles could park freely on any of theuniversity lots, even though most of them were open to the public on Sundays anyway. They

pulled into the otherwise empty lot and the three of them exited the car, Giles carrying the backpack.

Willow squinted up at him in the sunlight. You gonna use Hakars banishing spell?Giles nodded. I had considered it. But lets see your constabulary guardian first and get

an idea what hes capable of.Oz led them across the street to the spot he and Willow had hopped the wall yesterday,

and the trio took the same route as before. Willow led them toward the thin stone path leading upthe hill, and shortly after they had stepped onto it, the baritone voice sounded, Hold it right

there!Giles turned to Willow. Same voice?

She nodded.Turn around. They turned to face the policeman.

Same fellow? Giles queried.Thats him, Oz replied. 1967 coat and all.

Didnt you people see the sign that said, Do not enter? the policeman asked.Yes, Giles replied. But the gates broken.

Did you have any reason to suspect that sign didnt apply to you?Oz raised an eyebrow. Thats almost exactly what he said yesterday.

It is what he said yesterday, Willow remarked. Except he seems to realize theresthree of us, and that youre older, Giles. Yesterday he called us kids.

Giles frowned. Not a type one, then. Maybe a type two.Are you listening to me? the policeman bellowed.

Yes, sir, Willow responded.Well, then, I suggest you go back the way you came, before I have to charge you with

trespassing. Now, I dont think youd like that, would you? The cop folded his arms.Thats new, Oz pointed out.

Bugger off, you old sod, Giles told the cop. What did you say, smart aleck? the policeman queried.

You heard me, you stupid pig, Giles taunted him.Im warning you, the cop threatened. One more word out of you, and its off to jail.

Giles shook his head. Not bloody likely, he murmured. he turned to Willow. Typetwo. But he cant move.

I hope not, Oz commented. He looks really pissed.

All bark and no bite, Giles assured the young man.Im talkin to you! the policeman growled. Get out of here now!Oh, be quiet, Giles muttered, removing a book from the backpack and opening to a

previously marked page.Spirit who watches, spirit who sees, spirit depart, spirit now flee. Giles glanced up

from the book. The policeman had vanished.

Thats it? Oz wondered. Seems like a really lame spell.Giles shrugged. Hakar wasnt a poet. He believed in simple spells you could remember.

Worked like a charm until they strung him up for witchcraft.Oz frowned. Does anyone who writes any of your books ever come to a good end?

Bernie Tobin retired to Florida, Willow put in.Giles shook his head. His fishing trawler vanished in the Bermuda Triangle.

Oh, Willow frowned. But at least we got rid of the guardian spirit.Indeed, Giles agreed. Shall we? He gestured up the path.

That settles it, Oz spoke as he fell in step next to Willow. No writin magic books foryou.

I hadnt planned on it anyway, Willow assured him.Oz nodded. Good.

The three of them followed the stone path as it wound into the woods. Though theafternoon had been sunny, the woods soon thickened to the point where only occasional stabs of

sunlight penetrated to the ground. Giles and Willow proceeded cautiously; Oz stopped andsniffed the air.

Guys, he announced. They stopped.Theres nothing alive in here.

Giles frowned. What do you mean? he asked, noticing that the forest lay silent.I mean nothing, Oz clarified. No birds, no squirrels, nothing.

And everything seems muffled, Willow said, moving her jaw in a funny back and forthpattern.

Oz gave her a look.Trying to pop my ears, she explained. Feels like theres some pressure here, like when

youre really high up in a building, or an airplane. She mock-yawned again.Look out! Oz warned., throwing himself at Willow. They spilled to the ground

together, Oz covering Willow, and rolled between two trees. Giles ducked, narrowly avoidingthe dagger that landed in the tree next to him.

He looked up to see a dark shape in black robes standing not a dozen feet from him.Leave, the thing growled. Now.

Giles reached over and touched the dagger. It proved frighteningly substantial. You cant kill us, can you? he muttered.

I can hurt you, the thing hissed back.Type six, Giles grumbled.

Willow glanced up from over Ozs shoulder. Can you counter him? she wondered.I could use some help, he replied honestly.

The guardian spirit threw another knife at him, which Giles stopped with his backpack. Now, look here, Giles told the spirit, we were just leaving.

Go! the thing commanded in a roar.

Oz looked at Willow. Im for cooperating, he told her.Willow furrowed her brow. We need someone who can play dodge the knife betterthan Giles, she suggested.

Buffy, they said in unison. All very well and good, Giles agreed. Now, lets go and get her.

The shape seemed to grow in size, and it revealed a pair of red eyes. Leave! Before Isummon more of my kind!

Oz hopped up and helped Willow to her feet. Were goin, were goin, he muttered. But well be back, Willow warned, wagging a finger at the dark shape. Youll see.

The spirit threw another dagger at Willow, who slipped close to Oz. The blade embeddeditself in a tree.

Lets run along now, Giles remarked, before this thing loses its patience. You can get rid of him, right? Willow asked again.

Yes, yes, Giles responded, irritated, leading them back out of the woods. But notwhile hes throwing daggers at me. As you two so aptly put it, well need someone who can

occupy its attention.Oz nodded. Back to the Beetle, he suggested.

Giles nodded, frowning. Yes, indeed. Another avenue blocked. He pursed his lips. This is all very frustrating.

Willow patted his shoulder. Cheer up, Giles, she offered. Were due for some kind ofreally big breakthrough.

Giles remained silent -- and surly -- all the way back to the car.

What? Cordelia mumbled to herself as the buzzer sounded. She thumbed the MUTE on

the remote and stood up reluctantly, frowning. Who the hell is it? she wondered as she moved tothe door. She peered through the peephole; seeing who it was, she sighed, Shit. Now what?

She opened the door. Hi, Shelley, Cordelia managed.

Hey, Cordelia. Can I come in?Cordelia gestured to her messy apartment. Why not? She returned to the couch, leaving

Shelley to close the door and find herself a seat.Pike told me you might not be in such great shape, Shelley told Cordelia, and since I

was in the neighborhood, I figured--Cordelia interrupted, Can it, Shelley. I know you came over here to try some girl-talk on

me to try to make me feel better.Shelley shrugged. I really was in the neighborhood. Your place isnt far from the route I

    take to Reverend Camdens.

Cordelia nodded. Great. Im the chick who lives near the holy-water run. My lifesambition.

Shelley jerked a thumb toward the door. Hey, I can go, she offered. Its sundown outthere, and I have things to kill. Id rather make sure youre okay, though.

Cordelia looked up at her, brown eyes hard. Why?

Shelley sat down on the edge of an easy chair. Because you shouldnt have to suffer.Tell me about it, Cordelia agreed. But why do you care?Shelley rubbed her hands on her legs. Because youre one of us. You may not want to

be, and you may bitch about it sometimes, but you are. You know about all these hidden thingsin the world, all this darkness and evil, and you dont run away. She took a deep breath. To me

that makes you strong.Cordelia gave her an uncertain look. Or stupid, she replied. Ive been helping out you

weirdos -- Buffy, Angel, Willow, you, Pike, Xander -- for five years, and I have nothingto showfor it, nothing at all. Im just this dopey chick in the prime of her life whos so desperate to have

somebody that even Xander Harris looks good.Shelley leaned forward. You loved him, didnt you? she asked quietly.

Cordelia frowned, but eventually shook her head. Yeah, I did. Until he went and cheatedon me with the biggest geek of them all, Willow.

Do you still love him? Shelley asked.Cordelia answered, What does it matter? Hes so head over heels in love with Buffy that

he doesnt even notice me.Shelley allowed herself a small smile. Somehow I doubt that.

You havent seen him around Buffy, Cordelia pouted. Shes never gonna be interestedin him, so why does he even bother? Shes like completely obsessed with Angel.

Shelley offered, Rachel told me Buffy had a few new boyfriends in college -- someonenamed Geoff or something like that, and... Kiley? Riley? Something Irish.

Yeah, until they realized what a freakazoid weirdo she is, and the fact that she can bendiron with her bare hands, and then they wake up and smell the bizarreness and take off for the

hills. Cordelia shook her head. But thats his problem. Xander gets off on the weirdness, because he cant get a normal chick. So he goes all tingly when she kills things.

He got you, Shelley reminded Cordelia. And youre fairly normal.Cordelia glared at her.

Compared to, say, me, Shelley smiled.Cordelia nodded. I guess, when you put it that way, sure.

Shelley folded her arms and sat back in the chair. So what are you gonna do about it?About what?

About Xander, Shelley spoke. The way I see it, you have two options.Stabbing or shooting? Cordelia guessed.

Shelley smiled. Of course not. You can go after him, or you can let him go. She pausedand added, For good.

Cordelia made eye contact. And everyone says I can be pretty direct.Shelley shrugged. Its better than hurting, isnt it? she asked. Cordelia, you obviously

still have feelings for this guy. Neither choice is gonna be easy, but you need to know what youwant before you can figure out how to get it.

Cordelia frowned. Youve had like one guy. How do you know all this stuff?

Shelley smiled. I was the dating queen of my high school, she told Cordelia. Guyswould practically line up to ask me out. She sighed. Until vampires ate my family and screwed

up my life.Cordelia nodded. My family managed to screw themselves up, she admitted. Its like

my whole life has been a mess since I met Buffy, and things just keep getting more and more

crappy. First I get cheated on, then my friends dump me, then my daddy cheats on his taxes, andnow... She shook her head. Im a wannabe actress who models for Sears and my best friend isa two-hundred and fifty year old vampire. She looked at Shelley. My life is a total suck job.

So leave it, Shelly advised. What? Cordelia asked.

Shelley took a deep breath. This life isnt for everyone, Cordelia. I chose it. Rachelchose it. Pike, Xander, Willow, Giles, Sam -- they all chose it. That doesnt mean you have to, or

even that you should. You have to do whats best for you, Cordelia. Not whats best for anybodyelse.

Cordelia hugged herself. I know, she mumbled. I know. So, Shelley said, do it. Do what your heart tells you. Even if it means we lose you.

This whole fighting evil gig isnt worth it if you lose who you are while youre doing it, she toldCordelia. Believe me, I know that better than anyone else.

I guess you do, Cordelia agreed. But you guys are always so outnumbered, and I knowits the right thing to help, and--

Shelley held up a hand. Your heart, Cordelia. Not your brain. Your brain is what got youhere. Do what you feel is right -- not what you thinkis right.

Cordelia met Shelleys gaze. You know, for somebody who really wants to be a Slayerso badly, youre really pretty all right.

Thanks, Shelley smirked. I think. No no no, I meant that as a compliment, Cordelia assured her.

I know, Shelley said. I know.

    *Sunnydale

We already searched the docks, last night, me and Xander, Buffy repeated. Great big

no show.I couldnt find him in any of the hotels along the north side of town after you guys

called it a night, Angel put in. That leaves the beach area, the east side, and south of the city.

Angel frowned. Still a lot of ground.I wish Oz could help, Willow pouted. He can sniff out vampires now -- sometimes,

anyway. And hes getting better at it. We could help you guys with all the searching. Shepushed out her bottom lip. If he wasnt getting all wolfy again.

Well take you up on that tomorrow, Buffy assured her, patting her on the shoulder, when Oz is more himself.

So what do we do? Xander asked. Split up again and try to cover a lot of ground, callfor back-up if we find our dynamic duo?

Angel glanced at Xander but said nothing. That seems like a logical plan, Giles agreed. Buffy and I will cover the beach, and--

I was thinkin maybe I should go with Buffy, Xander offered.Buffy looked mildly surprised. Why would that be? Giles queried.

The whole training thing? Xander spoke. Im supposed to be Buffys back up. Okay,so we all know I cant ever be a real fill-in, but if Im gonna learn, I should be learning from the

    master, dontcha think?

Yeah, but-- Buffy began, when Willow spoke up.Xanders right, she told them. Buffy and Angel obviously have to be on differentteams; theyre the strongest. So we need to pair up Giles and Xander with them. Since Xanders

gonna be working with Buffy after Angel leaves, it makes sense. Willow added quickly,Besides, then I can go with Giles and Angel.

Why not with us? Buffy wondered.Willow gave her a blank look. Well, she began, stalling, because... because Angel and

Giles both know magic, and while were looking, they can give me hints.Hints? Angel asked.

    Tips, Willow added.Tips? Giles queried.

You know, try this spell, dont use that one, dont bother reading this book, and so on.All four of them gazed at her.

Its just a suggestion, Willow finished quietly.Giles removed his glasses. Willow may be on to something here. Following the logic

that Xander should be learning from Buffy, Willow should take the opportunity -- while Angel ishere -- to expand her knowledge of magic by talking to someone who certainly knows more than

I do.Angel questioned, I thought you didnt want Willow playing with spells?

Id rather she not do so unsupervised, Giles corrected him. That would hardly be thecase were you and I there.

Angel frowned, glancing at Buffy, but could find no reasonable way out of thearrangement. Works for me, he announced in a tone that belied his words.

Well, then, lets-- Giles began, but the phone interrupted him. He moved to answer it.Willow moved over next to Xander. You owe me, she whispered so that only he could

hear her. In response her surreptitiously gabbed her pinkie and squeezed it gently. So, where do you wanna hit? Buffy asked Angel.

Well take the east side, Angel offered. Little quieter there. What about you andXander?

I like the south side of town, Buffy commented.Nobody likes the south side of town, Xander piped up.

Thats why well take it, she smiled. You lead, I follow, Xander assured her.

And dont get any funny ideas, Angel warned them.Buffy furrowed her brow, but Xanders eyes widened.

This is Faith were talkin about, Angel reminded them. Dont play hero and try totake her and Ethan down by yourselves. Call for back-up.

Yes, Dad, Buffy teased him.Angel opened his mouth to reply when Giles returned to the group, worry etched on his

face. Im afraid therell be a change of plans, he informed them. What happened, Giles? Willow inquired.

Giles voice went soft and low. That was Wesley. He and another Watcher and avampire have found Ethans hide-out, and theyre going after him. He called me and gave me the

address so that we could help them out, should they need it.Wesley? Xander echoed. Our wussy Wesley?

Willow glanced at Angel. Working with a vampire?

Giles nodded.Buffys voice was a whisper. If he screws this up, I will personally make sure he neverwakes up from the coma I put him in.

She looked around at the others. Lets go.

*Still yet another someplace else south of Sunnydale

Ready, yall? Gorch whispered to Wesley and Jill.Wesley nodded tensely, stake clutched tightly in his fist. Jill murmured her assent and

held her pistol up.Gorch eyed Wesley darkly. Yall watch where you go stickin that thing, he cautioned.Wesley looked hurt. But I gave you my word.

That and two bits gets me a shot of whiskey, Gorch hissed. Now lets go.He stood up and kicked the door open, the heel of his cowboy boot shattering the wood

around the lock, splinters flying in all directions. Gorch took two steps into the room, fists raised;Jill slipped around him, leading with her gun; and Wesley moved behind them, peering over

Gorchs shoulder.A vampire sat tied in a chair, fangs bared now, his hunting face revealed. Faith, rail thin,

lay on the bed, watching television; Ethan Rayne was nowhere to be found.Logan? Gorch growled.

Lyle? the bound vampire asked. You came to get me?Hell, yeah, Gorch replied. Me an--

Lyle, theres another one in the bathroom, Logan interrupted. Hes the dangerous--Faith pulled the stake from beneath her pillow and silenced Logan, driving it through his

heart and turning him to dust. She watched as his ashes fell to the chair, the ropes going slack.Faith! Wesley called out.

She turned to look at him when suddenly she felt a jolt course through her, an almostsexual pulse of strength and energy, as if she were experiencing an orgasm. Her fingers tightened

around the stake, and her breath hissed out from between clenched teeth. Her head bowed.Im gonna kill you! Gorch cried out, moving toward Faith.

Her head snapped up. No youre not, she uttered, rising up and landing a solid uppercut

to his chin. Gorch stopped for a moment, shaking his head to collect himself. Faith drove thestake down at his chest, but he stopped her, grabbing his arm in both of hers. She twisted her armsideways, losing the stake but breaking his grip, and tossed him across the room.

Freeze! Jill shouted, pointing the gun at Faith.Faith looked over at the Watchers. Hey, Wes, she sneered, nice girlfriend ya got

there.Youre coming with us, Faith, Jill told her. Dont make this hard on yourself.

Faith raised an eyebrow. Wheres Buffy, Wes? Wheres Giles?

Wesley moved in past Jill, stepping toward Faith. Dont worry about them right now.Im going to take you back to England so we can heal you.

I really dont think so, Ethan remarked as he stepped out of the bathroom.Where ya been, E? Faith smiled. Youre missin all the fun.

Ethan shrugged. Sorry, Faith. Nature called. Rather insistently.

Dont try to interfere, Ethan, Wesley warned him. Youve caused enough troublealready. No, Ethan spoke, smiling, I think I could stand to cause just a little more. He grabbed

Wesley quickly, spinning the other man around so that he faced Jill, pulled the stake from hisgrasp, and pointed it at the younger mans neck. If I stab him with this, it might not kill him,

Ethan told Jill. But it will really hurt him. A lot.Youre both expendable, Jill told him. All I want is Faith.

Ethan glanced at the Slayer. My, youre a popular girl, he teased her.Everybody loves a Slayer, Faith shot back. What can I say?

Faith, Jill spoke, come with me peacefully and Ethan gets to live.Faith shrugged. Okay.

Jill blinked. Okay? she echoed.Sure, Faith said. Hes been good to me. I dont want him harmed.

Faith, Ethan hissed, just what are you doing?Saving your ass, she tossed back at him. Come on, honey, lets go, she told Jill.

Jill stood up, still aiming the gun at Ethan. Nothing funny, Faith. Or Ethan gets it.Faith raised her hands to shoulder height. Sure. Im easy.

Jill shifted her attention to Faith, and in that moment the Slayer threw herself at theWatcher, her hands wrapping around the gun and wrenching it out of Jills hand. You really

should have shot me before I killed that vampire, she hissed, backhanding Jill across the face. The Watcher spun away from her and sank to the carpet.

Jill! Wesley cried out.Not your concern, Faith told him as she turned and socked him in the jaw.

Ethan let his body slump to the ground. You had me worried there for a second, Ethan told her, raising an eyebrow.

E, Faith said, moving to him, I aint goin anywhere without you. To his shock, Faithreached up and pulled him to her, parting his lips with hers and kissing him. She let him go after

a long, sultry kiss and growled, Now lets get out of here before the real cavalry shows up andwere not dealin with idiots.

A noise behind them made Faith turn; Gorch had regained his feet.Gimme that stake, Faith hissed. Ethan handed it to her. Wordlessly Faith reared back

and threw the stake at Gorch. The vampire dove for the floor, rolling right out the doorway as the stake impaled itself

in the wall right behind him. Gorch never looked back; he took off at a run, boot heels clackingdown the stairs and across the pavement.

I can get him, Faith muttered. I can track him down, and--Ethan grabbed her arm around the bicep. We havent the time. We must leave, now.

Faith gave him a long glance, shaking her head. You dont understand. He--Ethan leaned over and kissed her again, quickly. Now, dear, before all of our enemies

arrive at once, and we really do get captured.Faith nodded, but she threw him a pout. I hate letting vampires get away.
