SUNCOASTERS SQUARE DANCE CLUB Suncoasters’ beginners for the year are progressing well and enjoying their dancing. We will do more promotions for new dancers from the middle of June. Club members are sad to hear of the passing of our member, William Rowbury. William and his wife Faye danced at the club regularly at our Wednesday ses-sions. We pass on our condolences to Faye and her family at this sad time. Preparations continue for the National Convention to be held on the Sunshine Coast at the end of June. We hope you are all looking forward to it as much as we are. Pam Edwards

Cairns City Square Dance Club
Our Club has continued to dance each Friday night Mainstream and Plus although numbers have
been down. Members are all happy with our new venue.
Col and Jean have been away all month on a fishing trip and hopefully bring home some worthwhile
catches.
Our newest member Wendy is about to leave us to travel to various places overseas for the next 3
months. Also leaving us next month for 3 months is Diann and Henry who are cruising and then
travelling the UK.
Margaret and Graham continue to travel up from Innisfail and Graham is looking so well now he
could be dancing again very soon.
Debbie dances most nights with us inspite of her having to start work very early the next day.
That is all our news for this month until my next report.
Were any of you made an "April Fool"? Cane Country Squares held an "April Fools Dance" with Michael Mills as Guest Caller. Members of his Club helped to make up the two sets for the weekend. It was a busy weekend with Plus session in the afternoon followed by Rounds, Basic & Mainstream Saturday night. "A" followed Sunday morning with Rounds in the afternoon. Thanks Michael and Rachelle. Hi from Hervey Bay, Our learners are still doing well. Thank you to all the angels who turn up to help every Saturday. They really are angels. We had a very successful Birthday get-together at one of our local hotels for those whose Birthdays were in March and April. Although it was a bit hot under umbrellas, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Pavlova cake topped with strawberries, other fruits and whipped cream was delicious. Quite a number of us went to Maryborough to dance to Michael Mills from Rock-hampton. We all thoroughly enjoyed the night - great calling from Michael, love-ly supper and wonderful company.
Our pancake night turned out a great evening. Everyone brought toppings and made their own pancakes in frypans provided. They say "Too many cooks spoil the broth" but in this case everything looked beautifully tasty. The night finished off with games of table tennis, darts and Rummykub.
James Reid is our next caller on Saturday, 14th May. Theme, "In the Pink" at our usual times of Plus at 2pm till 4.30pm and Mainstream at 7pm.
We have some great people in our Club which meets every Tuesday from 10am to 12 noon at City Hall. If you have any enquiries, please phone our caller Kay Walker on 0419 717 520. One of our members Annette is an Occupational Therapist and she and her husband have put together a list of why they enjoy coming along the our City Hall Club:
1. air conditioned comfort
2. fresh, recently renovated facilities
3. free hot drinks and chilled water
4. $7 for two hours - very affordable
5. go at your own pace and own level, rest whenever you like
6. no partner required
7. gender does not need to be specified (!) as we mix up the "boys" and "girls" roles an-yway
8. exercise at a "civilized" time of day - for those who don't like getting up early or going out at night
9. no pressure to commit to weekly attendance - you are not letting down the team if you have a week off
10. low performance pressure - the group doesn't expect you to to "get it right" all the time
Annette has also give us a list of some of the personal benefits to an individual's well being based on her skills as an Occupational Therapist, that can be gained by participating in square dancing. We will include some of those in the following months editions of this Newsletter. This information will be invaluable when talking to friends about the benefits of square dancing.
Rambling Eights Like many other clubs, Rambling Eights has been taking in beginners lately, with “Come and Try” nights finishing at the end of April. So far, about ten of these enthusiastic learners have stayed regularly, with only a few not return-ing. We start the night at 7 with a half hour teaching basics, then alternate with mainstream till 9pm, finishing the last half hour with full mainstream or
plus, depending on numbers, then supper for all before cleaning and packing up. We have enjoyed the company of visitors from other clubs lately, and are really ap-
preciative of the boost in numbers, with many of our own dancers off the floor for various reasons. Faith is over her foot problems and we are all hopeful that her arm will not need to be in a sling anymore, then she will have both arms free for dancing. We still miss Doug, unable to join us on the dance floor with his injuries, and help out when short of ladies. Even when every available woman has been on the floor in the past few weeks, Kevin, Les and Dougal have all had to take turns dancing the right hand dancer to help fill the main-stream sets. We are so fortunate to have versatile men as well as ladies when needed, but their “skirt work” needs a bit of imagination. At least it has given our new ones a good laugh and not put any of them off. They have expressed fascination and great enjoyment after seeing how we improvise.
Our first lucky numbers have been drawn, with the winners both being ladies again! Congrats to winners Ros and Jan Lucky squares are available every week at $2 each until the 50 numbers are full, then drawn. If the winner is not in attendance, the prize is put aside for them to receive the next time they walk through the door. All visitors are asked to supply their phone numbers when purchasing a number so that we can contact them if they win. We also run other fund-raising events, with all profits going to Children’s Charity at the end of the year. Last year after just six months our total donation to the Children’s Hospital Foundation was $548.
Dancers have also been travelling during April, Christine and Kevin to Maryborough
club, and David, Faith and Denise making the big trip to Glen Innes, NSW for Glen Squares
35th birthday. This was a special night for David as he was the clubs original caller, travel-
ling up from Armidale fortnightly, with Barry Knight running the club with tapes and records
on the other weeks. After a number of years Barry was finally able to take over the club and
call unassisted. For the special nights celebration there were six sets dancing with visiting
callers, David, Wilma, Les, Margaret, Frances and Karen and Barry finished
with one of his well- known easy fun mixers. Congratulations to all at Glen
Squares on achieving 35 years.
EZ SQUARES
Our party night on Tuesday 29th March was an outstanding success. We had up to seven squares on the floor during the program. There was a great variety of callers and calling combined with some very colourful and original outfits for our "Down on the Farm" theme. In all, it was a great night and our club was very happy with the outcome. Thank you to our fellow dancers from other clubs who supported us. Unfortu-nately, the next party night planned for May 31st will be postponed due to the hall being unavailable. Our next theme night will be "Cross Dressing" on Tuesday 30th August. Watch this space. 2016 Caller / Cuer Conference Calling Queensland Callers, Trainees and would like to be Callers.
Did you know that the Australian Callers Federation (ACF) is hosting a Caller Cuer Confer-ence prior to the National Convention? Paul Bristow (UK), Ken Ritucci (USA) and Steve Turner (Australia) will be featured presenters.
Qld. Square Dance Society is offering subsidies to callers/cuers who are the listed as Call-er/Cuer for Society Affiliated clubs e.g. those that are listed on the club's affiliation form are eligible to receive $ 50.00 for full time callers and $ 30.00 for Trainee callers. Application forms are available from the Square Dancing Society, the QCA, or from the conference website: http://acfcallercuerconference2016.weebly.com To apply for this subsidy the caller is asked to forward to Society Secretary their receipt for payment to register to attend the Caller Conference. The Secretary will then for-ward a letter either advising of the acceptance or otherwise. If accepted then the letter will state required details e.g. their bank account so that the Treasurer can transfer the money.
