Why would you want to use an online learning
environment?0 Students in our classrooms are digital natives, they have
been exposed to technology at an increasingly younger age and are very comfortable with using the technology.
0 Course management systems allow teachers to facilitate multiple learning experiences within the same classroom, making differentiated instruction easier to manage.
0 Online systems can be easily created and administrated and allow only selected students to access the information, therefore, protecting the privacy of students.

Advantages to using an online course management system0 Students have different varied learning styles.
Differentiated instruction allows for the flexibility in reaching different learning styles.
0 Often, differentiated instruction is seen as difficult to manage because there are so many different activities in place.
0 Teachers can use an online course management system such as Rcampus to help facilitate these differentiated learning experiences.

How can a course management system be used to develop meaningful learning units?0 Rcampus is quick and easy to use. An account can be
created within minutes and it allows teachers to moderate and facilitate multiple activities from one program.
0 Students who are not present in class would be able to access the information, as well, if they were absent or needed more time on an assignment.
0 By creating different types of learning activities, students will have more choice of activities and that will in turn lead to greater engagement in learning.

Advantages to using Rcampus in a middle school classroom0 I created an account within minutes that enabled me
to set up a classroom environment.0 I can invite students to the classroom, this would
protect the privacy of my students. 0 There are a variety of resources available to
educators. Rcampus provides a variety of resources for creating rubrics and eportfolios. Not only are the resources there but Rcampus also provides examples for teachers to create their own resources that can be customized to their needs.
0 Students will be able to choose what activities to participate in and will be able to work not only at school but at home on the assignments.

Challenges to using a course management system
0 Technology access is often limited at schools by the resources available (not enough computers/labs for everyone who needs to access them).
0 Curriculum calendars that require teachers to stay on pace (must teach the curriculum in a certain order/number of days).
0 Teachers are unfamiliar with online learning systems (not enough time to learn about them in order to implement them in the classroom)

0 Technology access is often limited at schools by the resources available (not enough computers/labs for everyone who needs to access them).
0 Actually, Rcampus would allow students the flexibility to access documents, resources, and activities at home and at school. This would allow greater access than a network drive (which could only be accessed at school).

Challenges
0 Curriculum calendars that require teachers to stay on pace (must teach the curriculum in a certain order/number of days).
0 Rcampus allows for there to be multiple activities which will allow chances to remediate and extend the curriculum at the same time. Some students need additional practice activities to master the curriculum, other students need less practice. The Rcampus platform would allow teachers to offer varied instruction based on the student’s individual need.

0 Students who are digital natives are usually very familiar with technology. They will be able to easily navigate the learning environment. The Rcampus platform provides multiple resources and tutorials for teachers. These should make using the program easier for teachers to use.
0 An additional advantage would be that teachers could collaborate on creating the class and then multiple teachers’ classes could use the course that is created. Then teachers who are more familiar with technology can upload or create the environment but all students will benefit.

Rcampus…moving towards the future
0 Teachers are required to do more, teach more, differentiate more, have less direct instruction and to have higher expectations for rigor and student performance.
0 With all these demands it is easy to become overwhelmed. Using an online course management system will allow teachers the flexibility to provide a engaged differentiated learning environment for all students.
0 Ultimately, this will lead to increased rigor and performance for all students. Students will be engaged and learning at different levels all within the same physical classroom environment, thanks to the virtual learning environment provided by Rcampus.
